  • Ok guys, my channel always promoted, NO SECRETS! I show you everything, the good and not so good. Well, this trip was my best ever up on the Delaware, but there were plenty of ups and downs. The ups, hooked a ton of fish. The downs, foul hooked a bunch of fish. I have absolutely no explanation. In my last 4 videos, caught over a hundred fish with only about 5 foul hookups. On this trip, about a dozen, most got off during the fight but I show a few to give you a TRUE story, wouldn't do my viewers justice if I edit out the real day and drama of my fly fishing trips. All-in-all, still an excellent day! The overcast weather kept the fish feeding underneath all day long. One of my longest videos, but I like showing you and telling you what I'm seeing, what I'm thinking and what I'm doing. I really hope this helps others learn more about our wonderful sport, and I hope it inspires more fly fishermen to socialize, befriend and help out others on the stream. I want to thank everyone now and in my past who helped me along the way, and there are plenty. Enjoy the movie, I hope it shows the Upper Delaware isn't as intimidating as I once thought it was, just gotta hit it right, and today we did :)

    You totally killed it up there, nice job! Try this, set the hook downstream like you normally do. Then turn your rod tip upstream and lower to the water.

    Amazing 1 hour and 19 minutes of fishing.
    The first fish I ever caught on the Delaware I thought was a Mack truck, turned out to be a 13" rainbow. Lol
    Thanks for your video

      You won't forget that day of fishing. Especially when someone ask you, have you fished the Delaware? Lol

    Another excellent video, I spent many a hour under or near that same bridge, but never had the awesome day you did. I can not believe the misses and the foul hook ups. I have found through the years and was told to me by much better fishermen than myself that foul hooks up on the tandem system is caused by the flies being tied to close to each other. And this especially happens with larger fish. I have encountered very few foul hook ups, but then again I am using a tag dropper of 7" and only ever fish two flies. Just food for thought, your day on the Penn's and now on Delaware have got to be epic. Tight Lines Friend

      Len Sherlinski Hi Len! Excellent food for thought. I’ll have to experiment. Just amazes me how most of the time it’s an occasional fish but when on an occasional day it’s a lot of fish. Another food for thought. Thanks for watching and commenting Len!

    Amazing as usual?! how do you "read the water? What signs trigger your fly stage to fish? Dun? nymph? Pupa? Time of year? Thanks. Really appreciate your videos very much.

      Very sorry, did not see your comment until now. Oh my, on the Delaware, very hard, if you catch a major hatch, consider yourself lucky. the staple diet on the Delaware are BWOs and Sulphurs in the Summer up in the NY area, both in sizes 18-20 and even 22s for the olives. So, small nymphs, especially Pheasant tails. In the Summer I like riffs, even super skinny ones, especially at the crack of dawn. the bigger fish move up into the riffs and close to the banks in the evenings and stay around them for several hours into daylight. I can't really say exactly in words how I read water, but much easier with good sunglasses, also have a plan how you wanna work a section, break it up into smaller sections and thoroughly dissect it. I continually move along taking baby steps, always hitting fresh water and new fish. I may stay in one spot during a hatch with rising fish, but even then I target different fish often not always pounding the same fish. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    The delware reminds me of my home town river in places where the riffles are I've been trying to mimic some of your setups you use and a glass bead red midge pupa size for some reason is one of the flies that you use I started using and they flat out work in size 20 and 22 that and a higas s.o.s nymph in black size 20 is just hammering them right now since you inspired me to fly I've been blessed with beginner's luck, natural ability and a good teacher which is you. Keep up the vids your getting awesome views look forward to seeing new content and hearing your laugh HA!

Those midge pupas are awesome, amazing the fish see such a small bug in such fast water. Keep up the good work, after the first couple times, it’s not just luck, it’s skill! Sounds like you’re becoming proficient, when or if you get a chance, help out a guy on the stream, pass it on, very rewarding and appreciated. Awesome!!

    Love your videos man! Watching this and a bunch of your other videos, some constructive criticism that will hopefully help you land more fish; Keep your rod low when you hook up and use side pressure to direct him where you want him to go. When you keep a high rod angle while fighting the fish, you're forcing it up into the faster water on top. Keeping the rod at a lower angle w/ constant side pressure will pull them right to you. Once you get them close enough that you're within a rod length, then go full high rod tip. Again, let them stay low and use side angles to point their head where you want them to go while they stay deep in the slower water. Tight lines!

    Great video great day and u had luck that fish were feeding. Wbd is known to get the best fly fisherman frustrated as you already know. I have had days there where I cant catch a fish smaller than 20 inches. I had days where i only catch 10 or 12 inches and than I had days where it seems like there are no fish in the river. Still it is my favorite river on east coast. Fish are wild they fight amazing and water is always nice and cool. Great Job and tight lines all the best from NYC

      PA WOODS N WATER i wish i lobed closer too it takes me 2 hrs from nyc sometimes more depending how traffic is. I was in Montana fishing last week but it poured rain for 4 days and all the streams were too high too fish. I did squeeze two ok days of fishing one on firehole in yellowstone, ruby river and missouri below holton dam. Wanted to fish more creeks but everywhere i went they were either too muddy or crystal clear but too fast and rapid like. I drove 1600 miles in 6 days. Well at least now
      i know montana like I lived there for years. Gonna try august fishing again if wife allows :)

      Oh man! I feel your pain about rained out vacations. Love Montana, my dad lived there for 22 years, had a trailer up on the Big Mo for about 15 years, fished there a bunch of times from 1985-95 before the Missouri was famous. Never a bad day there, textbook flyfishing and big fish and plenty of fish all to yourself and no outfitters. The good ol’days! Nice chatting with ya!

    5 stars, awesome as usual.
    With the hot weather the previous day's it could have been some fish moving up from the East and main?
    Usually happens in July , August.
    Do you know how much weight (grams) you were using?
    One extra weight could make Al the difference, looking forward to Future videos.
    Keep em coming.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551

      flyfishny Thank you very much! Honestly, I add enough weight to feel bottom or get stuck on bottom occasionally. This day I was using 2 BB Dinsmore shots, heavy but mainly because of the Globug, so hard to sink. Glad you enjoyed it!

    • @flyfishny1035
      @flyfishny1035 6 років тому

      One more quick question, do you place your split shot on top of all 3 flies or between flies? Does it vary from day to day?
      Some people swear on bottom, but the flies won't swing naturally. Some say in between flies some say on top?
      I have a cabin on the Beaverkill River and I'm up there every weekend fishing the East, West, Main, and of course the BK when not to warm. Never had a day like that, but I'm getting a lot better thanks to your videos
      Best out there, always looking forward to your next adventure

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  6 років тому +1

      Wow! Thank you again! My split shot I always put above my top fly. Why? Because fly lines are generally built with the weight towards the end of your line going from heavier down to lighter to your tippet, so that’s generally how I prepare my rig, heavier fly on top down to the lighter Fly at the end. I’ve tried putting it in between flies but I’ve often gotten tangles with that set up. As always, whatever works best for you, but that’s my theory and that works well for me.

      @pawoodsnwater7551  4 роки тому

      Phillip Quatrini Hi Phil! I’m not tightline nymphing, this is more regular nymphing or more so, long distance nymphing. I watch the belly of my line at whatever distance I’m fishing, watch for a pause or a strike or a hesitation as a sign to set the hook. Check out my “Nymphing Strategies” part 3 video for better examples. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • @westsidewil

    What’s your set-up? I typically fish the upper parts of the WB of the Delaware near Deposit/Hale Eddy. Mostly dries. Want to start nymph fishing though.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  6 років тому +1

      westsidewil Well, as you know, the Upper Delaware River system very tough to figure out. This day they were hitting the pheasant tail size 18 really well, can’t say that’ll work other days. Usually I like to use a big nymph or attractor fly up top and either one or two realistic nymphs below using an in-line tandem rig each fly tied off the bend of the hook. Using enough weight to make sure I’m bouncing on the bottom. Everything is trial and error, checking the rocks and changing flies until I get a combo that works. Make sure you have a drag free drift whether you’re using an indicator or not. And definitely fish around the riffs. That’s a very basic start, hope it helps. Have fun!

    • @westsidewil
      @westsidewil 6 років тому

      PA WOODS N WATER - what rod and reel you use? Looking to purchase a minimum 10’ nymphing rod. At this point, not a very good nymph fisherman. Usually fish up up top. You use an indicator line? Any recommendations on videos/channels to teach me technique? Thanks.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  6 років тому +1

      Honestly , I’d look at an Echo nymphing rod called the Shadow in a 10ft/3wt, they even sell a added section to extend it further, very reasonable price for the combo with the reel also. I like Echo! Check out some of my Nymphing Strategies videos a 3 part series, also Lively Legz and Orvis has nymphing videos also.

    dont you realize that hooking fish when the flies are past your position result in the weakest hooksets because you are pulling flies away from the fish..thats why most your hooked fish on the swing as u call it get off..fishing 3 flies in that fast moving water makes no sense at all and 3 fly rigs i think should be illegal..all 3 of your flies are tied in tandem and all off of the bend which another terrible way to rig them and your fighting fish in the main current and your wondering why your losing so many and getting so many foul hooked fish which is doing more harm than good to the fish...being lazy in fly fishing results in poor results..if u feel u need to fish more than a single fly then rig it correctly and use a tag for your dropper fly and space them at least 20 inches or more apart..thats why you space them 2 feet apart is to prevent foul hooking..if a dropper tag is too complicated for you then at least tie your flies off the eye..off the bend makes your tippet material get in the way of a fish taking your fly resulting in a weak hookset...if you fish just 2 flies and fish your dropper fly from a tag and back outta the fast current into the slower current when you get a hookup you will automatically get more fish in the net...whoever thinks fishing 3 flies triples your success rate has no idea how to properly nymph fish..side pressure instead of lifting your rod straight up to the sky will absolutely drastically help tire fish out much quicker..straight up in the air fighting fish does nuthing to tire them out except keep them in the top fast currents and resulting in many lost fish..

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  6 років тому

      Dennis Loudon Hey Dennis! Technically speaking no, but all my nymphing incorporates all different styles. The reason I say this is, when it’s close I’m high sticking, then I’ll do some long distance , with and without indicators, and honestly I use pretty much the same butt leader section for dry fly fishing as I do for nymphing. I’m very versatile and adjust to each situation throughout my whole day. My one main thing I consistently do is get that fly down deep and nice straight line to my rig and good focal point. Thanks for your comment!
