A trio from heaven, Jaco at his peak
flights of fancy, and sheer musical brilliance
R. I. P. Jaco Pastorius...
Bob Moses is a fantastic drummer. He deserves credit here. Just as much as Jaco.
agreed. Strangely enough, Bob Moses has said that he hates this record!
Well said Paul.Pat Metheny writes some great tunes too; this is simply sublime.
Joe DiVita do you remember if he why or gave any reasoning? Just curious. At first, I didn't get Bob's parts at all in comparison to J & P. After more intensive listens in perfect atmospheres like long tour drives through the Midwest and a few play throughs (I'm a drummer), I get more and more what he was trying to express. I play this tune differently, as I'm sure most do, but that's only a testament to Bob's style and technique that is truly one of a kind.
One of my favorite albums ever. They play so cohesively together. A lyrical masterwork.
Three of the most influential players / composers of their time.
El tiempo pasa pero la buena musica se queda puedan pasar otros 40 años .Fantastico Pat,Jaco y Bob.Esto era solo el comienzo de la leyenda PAT METHENY
This album changed my life. :)
This is such a beautiful, joyous piece of music.
This track is so beautiful...
I seek this beauty in freedom within my own band, to channel this feeling yet remain true to the unique sound of our group.
We do not try to sound like Pat Metheny , but look to him for inspiration.
Bob Moses deserves the credit as well!
This was my second PM album, after purchasing American Garage (PMG). This is still in my rotation. I even love the cover art - so much so that I love listening to this album throughout the summer!
This music will always evoke feelings and memories in me of a long distant past, or great times and people, too sublime to articulate. Also of bright sunny days ahead.
i can hear Jaco's part, yay!
PAT METHENY is a guitar GOD. I saw him in concert at the MERRIAM theater in PHILADELPHIA on OCTOBER 5, 2018. WOW! WORLD CLASS MUSICIAN
This is one of my favorite jazz albums, up there with Kind of Blue...
It is nice to have this video on the web as a scholastic document as well as a great, historic piece of music. This was recently voted as one of the Top 10 solos on a Jazz Guitar teaching website for the solo starting roughly at the 1:13 mark. I am a huge "Pat-head" and have what I think are all of his albums-- including lesser known stuff on other peoples disks and his book and bootleg teaching videos. This is one of his oldest works, and although the soloing here has some of what become classic "Pat motifs," I can't call it one of the first solos that comes to mind as The Ten Best Jazz Solos (even if he was beginning to re-define jazz guitar at this early age), given his classic Trio disks, his unique South American stylings, and the more popular Still Life (Talking) with "Third Wind," which is the first song I think of to show off Pat's chops in a newbie listener setting. "Third Wind" itself is dated now-- around 30 years old. My favorite song of all time is "Are You Going With Me." That, for me, is the quintessential Pat (along with "Song For Bilbao").
this is simply amazing
my two favorites
when I die I hope these two can serenade me into the next life.
Oh, hot damn, MINE as well!!!! Pat & JACO, tough to beat! Check out the luthier, Linda Manzer's site, absolutely incredible! Pat helped design a series of Signature acoustic guitars.
One word can describe this .......... JOY !
Two geniuses...... and Pat is sooo young here
Pure joy!
damn it... been listening to this album for almost 12 years every once in a while... that bass stuck in my head and it's so obvious this is jaco.... i never looked it up, i suppose i gotta thank the uploader for finally educating me on it :-)
I bought the album on vinyl and I didn't realize it was Jaco on bass until much later!
amazingly someone had the brains bringing together virtuosos in the studio to record them
their recorded gifs will last with time
I just cry ... I was studing by PAT+BONA+SANCHES version... now I heard this one and cry ... Jaco makes me cry ... Jaco
Can't get much better than this.
It is beautifully played, indeed.
Magic !!!
beautiful‼️❤
thanks for posting
This is amazing
My first album of jazz music. Then Coltrane, Miles, Brubeck, Grapelli, "Bird", etc.Around 2003-2004, i remember...
Boby Fischer I guess you are very younger than I , but I'm sure you have a sense of beauty……A greeting from Japan.😊
Boby Fischer U have a sense of beauty‼ U gave me another point of view about the tune. I really appreciate. Because U mentioned to Bird & Brubeck.😊Thanks 4 your replying!
Браво !
What can one say...great feel...
Uma das músicas mais linda da humanidade...
Hermosa melodia. Pat metheny genio.
oh yeah! Thank you for sharing! ;)
The earliest incarnation of tech death bass

I wish they'd remix this album. A good Pat Metheny interview on this recording, studio, provess, etc. is telling. Gary's mix is definitely sub-par & this wonderful music deserves waay better.
I totally agree, although, tbf, so much of the old stuff was recorded and mixed even worse, like most of Jimi Hendrix's work, more's the pity. I think Jaco was pretty jet lagged from his first day in Europe. Didn't have his own amp. Still, it could be brightened up, ironically.
The very first Metheny composition on the very first Metheny album under his own name and it's already an instant classic as is the entire rest of this album. My only criticism of this album would be that the Ornette Coleman cover-tune at the end does not fit in with the more introspective and country-jazz mood and feel of the rest of the album. It belongs on a more bebop-oriented album. This is really one of the greatest trio recordings of all time and Bob Moses is easily the most unique and creative drummer Metheny or Jaco ever played with. All three of these players are have very high-concept ideas and can express them well but more important than that all three of these players were born to play with each other, they complement each other perfectly and work together so organically and produce such a pure result. They keep each other in check and temper each others' over-statements or over-indulgences without an ounce of compromise, not an easy thing to do, and thus shape every tune into so much more than just excellent jazz, transcending all the cliches of Jazz to qualify as genuine American poetics, those spiritual territories of the American experience that only the maps made of higher abstracted sound metaphors or the specifically applied metaphorical language of music, and a specifically American form of music at that, Jazz, appreciated by only the tiniest minority of Americans, can provide proper navigation through.
"appreciated by only the tiniest minority of Americans, can provide proper navigation through"
really? did you take a survey ?how presumptuous and arrogant
lol lets be real. jazz listeners are certainly the minority in America. although comment was still pretty arrogant
Speechless..... What more to say? Yeah! Thank's to mention the great Bob Moses!
Nice
Semplicemente fenomenale Il mio primo CD ....
Alberto Troncone Ciao‼ I can't read Italian , but the performance leave us breathless ( ;∀;)……A greeting from the Far East.👍
If only more drummers would be like this, other people's music would be so much easier to listen to.
impressionante .
Very good song :)
Massive
Pat has said that many of the songs on this album started out as guitar exercises that he designed for his students. The main theme of this tune appears to be an exercise for the right hand involving jumps across 2 strings to play each note in sequence. That's just my guess.
metà anni 70, geniale solo l'idea di voler suonare il basso elettrico con questo approccio! Jaco, resterai sempre un grande, l'unico! Chi poteva immaginare come poi sarebbe andata la tua vita...
If you ask yourself why the cooperation between Pat and Jaco has not been enough long, the answer is: in that group con't work two leaders.... and Pat has understood how much great could has been Jaco in a very short time....
📀📀📀📀
Now I see where UZEB got a lot of influence. Not even close to the fluidity and warmth of these 2 legendary players, but really good Jazz Fusion band,
Holy cow.
I heard Miles Davis said "Jazz" is just a made up word to describe social music. I guess he meant music that more people could understand, enjoy and play.
Also, since jazz is very often music built on improvisation, you need to listen to your fellow musicians and respond to their phrases.
Brandon LaRocque That is an amazing story and that, and this tune, are why the Internet is pretty amazing as well. Thank you for posting this man!
Marc Babin I believe he meant that, upon request, one could stand in on somebody's instrument and do a tune or two. Try doing that at a rock concert!
Marc Babin and it served to dampen some of the pretentiousness of jazz critics of the time and broaden the appeal.
jaco is god
As much as I would like to dislike Pat Metheny his breadth of melody is unrivaled in jazz music and I would like to see a "Classical composer " translate it to the orchestra if it is possible. :)
. . i remember getting my hands on this album when it came out. The first album I ever got from the new (back then) ECM label and what an album. Though it was Pat's album, Jaco had stolen the show imho!
For a moment this played along this other song (watch?v=6E0XBnaqZHY) and it what quite interesting. Play simultaneously and enjoy!
Two masters of Jazz in one masterpiece ! :)
But, who's the drummer ?
Why has he been treated so bad? He acts like Paul Motian at the Bill Evans trio!
@@Ici-st4hg Maybe coz Moses nearly ruins the track with his stupid cymbal bashing so high in the mix?
& Bob Moses
No, he wasn't needed. Jaco and Pat own this without his excessive use of cymbals so high in the mix.
wow if you listen to this and cynic one after the other u cant tell the difference
グッド👍。🙄
Bob Moses :)
la cabra :3
This album is compared with the Expropriation album of Bill Evans.
spacemanbose Because of the aura of the leader in this immortal session , and of the superb eloquence of the bassist , and of the subtle but effective performance of the drummer…! Beyond a mere guitar-trio.
This album and music is as relevant today as it was in the 70's, if not more.. Tell me Taylor Swift or Justin Beiber will be remembered in 6 years... I think knot...
Bob Moses butchers this track with his excessive use of cymbals, and them being so high in the mix. I have to try and block him out when listening as it's really Pat and Jaco that make this a great tune, but Bob ruins this for me.
ただのアルバムからの曲じゃねーか😡💢👊
ライブ録音じゃないんだ
I never liked Jaco.
helioseismology well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think he was a genius. Unfortunately, he was also schizophrenic and an addict. Goes with the territory, I imagine.
Pura emozione 😍
This is a STAPLE for me, I listen to it EVERY DAY! I met this lady at a concert with Metheny and Mehldau at the Mondavi center in Davis and at intermission, we walked down to the lobby where all his CD's were on sale and as I was pointing out to her the ones I REALLY like, when I told her that "Bright Size Life" was my favorite, Pat was in the lobby behind us, overheard what I said and replied "You're not the first I've heard say that, many people tell me that!" She turned and was shocked, he said thanks, shock my hand and walked away, then, as his last song of the show, he PLAYED this song and her and I COULDN'T STOP smiling, what a nice guy, I'll never forget that! 👍
Flournoy...Is there more to the story...with the girl that is?
what a story!
Cool
Great story Bro.
