When I first came to Korea I was like Asians don't use sunblock. Couple years later I have a skin condition and have to dress up like Brando in the Island of Dr Moreau.
I'm from Sweden, where people worship the sun due to how little we get of it. Not just during the winter months, but even during summer we don't have clear weather all the time. It has gotten better, but 10-20 years ago, my family only wore sunscreen when we went to the beach or knew we were spending many hours in the sun. Maaaybe on the face and neck when working outdoors or hiking.
I've always disliked being in the sun, partly because of my sensitive eyes, but also getting a tan and stuff. I didn't like it, and when I grew older, I started to learn about harmful UV rays and it just cemented my belief that keeping my skin covered and protected is better for me. It still only meant that I tried to stay in the shade, wear clothes that covered my skin more and using sunblock. No sun umbrellas or parasols.
Then I moved to Japan and it was like a whole new world! They not only used umbrellas or parasols to get that portable shade, they sold umbrellas with special UV protection in them. Other UV protective clothes and accessories as well, although I never really felt the need for that. But the sun umbrellas, it's such a simple yet amazing idea and I don't understand why it's not a thing in the west.
I'm back in Sweden now, but I use my sun umbrellas (yes, I have more than one, and yes, I call them sun umbrellas because they do work in rain as opposed to many parasols) every time I have to go out in the sun. I love it! My sister fell in love with the idea as well, so we are the two odd sisters with umbrellas out when it's not raining (I imagine that's how people see us). I've never seen anyone else here do it, even when we have 30+ degrees and people complain about overheating.
I never get comments on it, but kids sometimes point and tell their parents they want to do that too 😂 I wish they would let them!

@@JJ-yu6og I had to look it up; and yes, it's actually very bad here. When it comes to new cases of skin cancer per year (per capita), we are only behind Australia and New Zealand as the worst countries in the world. Both of which are working hard with preventative measures that I don't think we are doing here. Scary stuff...
I’m Swedish too and I agree. I use spf 50 everyday in summer and protective clothing and hats but I should start using umbrellas!
어릴땐 그냥 수영복만 입고 놀았는데... 밤새 따가워 잠을 못잔 경험이 있죠.. 점점 썬크림도 바르게 되었지만 씻겨나가서...역시나 화상입고.. 나중에 래쉬가드 같은게 나왔을때 입고 놀아보니... 화상도 안입고 너무 간편한거죠.. 아이들 피부는 더 연약하니... 가려주게 되고... 거기다 햇볕 많이 받으면 피부노화되고 잡티 생기고.. 하니... 제 주변사람중엔 썬크림 성분이 몸에 거부반응 있어 못바르는 분이 있어 무장하고 다니시는 분도 있고 햇볕 알러지인 사람도 있고요.
I’m going to mention the elephant in the room as a person of Asian descent myself. Part of it is colorism which is a problem in many cultures around the world, not just Asia. In Asia, historically, the darker you were you were seen as lower class because it meant you probably had to work outside in the sun in the fields rather than a life of leisure inside an estate. So the paler you are the more desirable (economically and genetically) you are in society. We see variations of this around the world. Sad but true. But I have no explanation or context for why some of those with white complexion in the west want to get tans so don’t use umbrellas but will happily look down on someone born with darker skin. It’s a crazy world folks. Just be kind to each other 😊🙏. Be safe you two.
I think that at some point in "the west" being tanned meant being able to afford vacations in the summer so being tanned became cool and desirable... now don't quote me on this as it is not fact checked
Although, As Korean myself, I can confirm you that no one regards skin tone as a reflection of one's social status and wealth-at least in Korea 2021 (and tanning shops have been getting more popular for the past years).
The colourism you refer to exists around the world (not just Asia). It exists in South East Asia (for example India), Africa, and Europe. I am sure you have heard the expression "the fairest of them all".

Koreans culture is smarter. Protecting their skin is great! I think Korean culture is more modest in general. Koreans look younger than Canadians in general IMO. I'm from B.C. Vitamin D deficiency is a pretty big issue in North America too.
I'm Australian, so we have a complicated relationship with the sun - one of our nicknames is 'the sunburnt country'. We have the highest rate of melanoma and skin cancer in the world. We have a slip, slop, slap campaign that was introduced back int he 80s (slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat), and at school there is a no hat, no play rule. All aimed to reduce peoples exposure to the sun/ UV rays. But I would say people still are not as conscious as they should be and many sun bake or tan regularly even though we have some of the strongest UV rays on earth. No one or only those with asian heritage or recent immigrants use sun umbrellas. Nowdays more people are using rash vests though, which is a good improvement even from when I was a kid. Personally all I know is that you can physically feel your skin slowly burning in australia, I never felt like that when I lived in the US.
umbrella is a very common item in the philippines! 💗💗💗 rain or shine we always have our umbrella’s with us.
I live in southern Ontario and it wasn’t until I took a trip to Japan in July that I bought a sun umbrella. I wouldn’t leave the hotel without it and would panic if I forgot it! They sell them everywhere and I bought a nice one. Summers now at home, I hardly use it and I don’t see them used. Most people just wear sunglasses and hats. It’s true that many people don’t protect themselves enough from the sun here in Canada.
I’m in Toronto and for some reason I’m seeing a lot of people using umbrellas for the sun. However I must say that the people that are using umbrellas are those who are East Asian and it was very fascinating.

I know, I live in Toronto and no one uses umbrella for protecting herself/himself from sunlights; however, it is very common in Hong Kong where I originated from, my friend in HK has an umbrella in her bag 7/24. She is very cautious for her skin.
I grew up in Calgary and never used an umbrella for sun protection. I live in California now and see a few people use umbrellas but mostly older ladies. I'm in my 30's and serious about sun protection and anti-aging so sunscreen, hat and being covered is a must for me now. Definitely different from my younger years. 😆
We actually didn't know or lack there of about sun umbrella and sun block face cream until our neighbors (Korean) came over. Now we use them. I most often and my husband more in the hot seasons. (In the south of USA)

I’m from Canada and I have never seen anyone use a sun umbrella or hand fan during a really hot summer. I’m currently living in southern China and I have adopted both the sun umbrella and hand fan as essential items. When I was last home in the summer of 2019, my dad and I participated in a World Record Maple Leaf for Canada Day. We had red ponchos on and it was 30+ degrees. I was very thankful that I took my hand fan with me. As we left the event, a man asked me if the fan made a difference and I said yes it did. I haven’t used the sun umbrella at home yet but hand fan yes.

My siblings and I (from CA) were visiting our sister in Chicago in July and visited a few museums. Due to Covid, lines were formed outside prior to letting visitors in. Each museum we visited we waited 45 minutes each to get in and the sun was burning lava. Thankfully, as a Californian (where I live the normal summer heat averages at 105°) and I knew to carry an umbrella with me at all times, including with my siblings. So while we waited we were the only group that had umbrellas over us and felt so proud and unashamed. We saw people dreaming our umbrellas. The sun does not discriminate.

I live in Quebec Canada and I've never seen anyone using a sun umbrella. I've also traveled extensively and have yet to see anyone using one. Really makes a lot of sense to use one though.
I'm a white American living in Korea and I 100% agree with your observations Sarah! I've noticed that I don't actually know a single American who wears sunscreen everyday. I started wearing it everyday about a year ago on my 23rd birthday, so I'm hoping that I'll age well and protect myself from the sun, especially since my father had melanoma. I'm curious to see how other Americans will react to my new sun protection care (using an umbrella for the sun, wearing sunscreen, etc.) when I eventually go back to the US
I live in Orlando, FL. It's very hot most of the year here. I frequently see visitors at Walt Disney World use umbrellas for shade, especially when a lot of the lines to wait in are right in the sun.
Ahh, so true! I was originally from Malaysia, and I remember growing up with my friends and we were obsessed (including my mum!) with using whitening creams to make our skins fairer! So, we avoid the sun as much as possible! Then, I arrived in Australia, and the locals love going to be beaches for hours or to the park, etc...getting tans! And, I found it so hard to find for any whitening creams for a long while! Hmmm....but yeah, now, here in Australia, we are warned to put on our sunscreens, etc 'cos the sun is brutal here during the summer season.
We've been watching the Olympics too. We are not sports people either, but watching the athletes makse me feel like I'm part of something again. During the women's fencing final they played the darth vader music during the match, I was in stitches!!!!

I live in Arizona, US. You will almost never see an umbrella because we get so much sun it's apart of AZ culture, and so little rain that when it does rain I swear half the state doesn't even own one 😂
So yeah, umbrellas are rare. I have noticed more emphasis in general the last 5-10 years for sunscreen and hats though as it's becoming more known that UVA/UVB rays lead to aging.

You guys are correct!! Folks here in NYC don’t use umbrellas except for the people in ktown or Chinatown. My husband loves the sun… so during the summer months he tries to soak as much as possible!
I never thought of using umbrellas until visiting Japan (in May). Forgot to apply my sunscreen and got so badly burned. Bought an umbrella and used it for the rest of the time. Since then, I have used an umbrella for shade fairly regularly. This year and last year, though, since we are not going out that much, we simply avoided the 10/11 - 4/5 time frame with the strongest sun and just go out in the morning or evenings. I am not wearing sunscreen every day because I am having trouble with vitamin D, too, and I do believe we need some good sunshine for our mood.
I'm from the US, and I love my sun umbrella but I do get some strange looks when I pull it out. (Little boy I overheard at the zoo: "Mommy why does that lady have an umbrella? Is it going to rain???" lol) Maybe it'll take a while to catch on around here, but the shade is so nice, plus not having to worry that my scalp is burning!

I think people in the UK share a similar view about the sun to people in Canada. We're probably a bit too blasé about it!

I live in Florida. You can get sunburned in winter time if you're not careful. Here it isn't very common to see a lot of people use a sun umbrella, but it is something that you can see.
As my father said, when he was little, in Turkey people used umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun. In fact, the purpose of the umbrella in the Ottoman period was just that. Umbrella means şemsiye in Turkish and "şems" means sun

In Bulgaria, people definitely do NOT take enough precautions so we are much more like Canadians. Here the only time that we use suncream is when we go to the beach. So I'm definitely grateful for how Korean culture taught me how to properly use suncream.

In the island of Djerba (Tunisia), where I come from, men and women wear large palm leaf hats in the Sun ( temperatures can reach 45°C degrees in August !) They also wear long sleeves and more clothing to keep themselves cooler 😊

Someone actually came up to me in Canada and told me I was so pale that she wished she could give me some of her tan. I am very pale to be fair. Our sunscreen sucks which is the problem. I am now the Asian sun cream supplier for the majority of Friends and Family.
I am Italian and live in Tuscany we do get very hot summers now,but only people i have ever seen with sun umbrellas are Asian holiday visitors,Italians in the main like most europeans worship the sun,but sun protection is used lots.

living in texas i know the heat, i usually always put sunscreen on just to go outside, and for the pool yeah u cannot go without , have a great start in the new week guys
the motto of my city ¨ La ciudad del sol amada¨ which means the city of the beloved sun we have strong sun all year round so we normally wear long sleeves to avoid getting sunburned outside but sunscreen is normally only used to go to the beach or swimming pool.
I had such a similar experience! Growing up in Canada I just had no idea that some people used umbrellas for the sun. I really thought umbrellas were only for rain. But when I travelled to Japan for the first time, it was sooo hot and I saw everyone using one that I bought one and it truly did help! In Vancouver where I live, it just doesn’t really get that hot very often. We are in a 2nd heatwave, but it’s easy to get around without needing a parasol.
It makes the world of a difference during hot and humid summers! But yeah, 99% of the time in Nova Scotia, I wouldn’t need one during the summer 😅
Oh, yeah, here in Germany we only use umbrellas for rain and have the big ones for the garden to sit under or at the beach. When I studied abroad in Southern China it really came as a culture shock seeing so many female-read people using those sun umbrellas with a reflective/metallic looking sort of underside.
I did eventually use them too, because the heat and humidity in Southern China is so extreme.
After I came back to Germany I tried using my umbrella in the summer heat, but I must admit I got stared at so I stopped. As the city my uni is in has a lot of people with Chinese heritage and students from Asia, but especially from China, I do sometimes see female-read people there using those types of umbrellas.
It's interesting thinking about it, we have big umbrellas to sit under on our terraces, but when you need to venture outside on foot (which is quite common in Germany) you don't have that luxury. I feel like we really need to catch up on that. Now that I'm older I feel less self-conscious, so maybe I'll try again in the next heat wave.
That umbrella thing is funny 😅 Here in the Philippines, almost all of us carry an umbrella because you can never predict the weather.
As a Canadian, I think it’s because we have such a short winter that we really love the sun. However, I feel like more people are using sunscreen now. I’ve noticed especially when I watch UA-camrs from the beauty community. A lot of times beauty gurus will put on a sunscreen with their makeup routines. Canadians also have a vitamin D deficiency from what Ive been told. I was told from my dr that everyone should be taking vitamin d and especially children. I think it’s because we have a long winter (less sun). Parents are constantly reminded to give vitamin d to our children on the daily. I don’t think Koreans are overboard with protecting their skin. We should probably be doing the same. We only have one skin.

I live in Vancouver and we had a crazy what wave this past summer. The part of town I live in is mostly Chinese folks so we saw a lot of umbrellas for the sun. However, it is mostly women. I wish we saw more men using them. Maybe one day!
I’m from the Caribbean and using an umbrella is essential, when I came to America I was so frustrated that it wasn’t a thing here. We need to normalize umbrellas during the summer, it’s definitely a necessity as each summer is getting hotter every year

Here in Ecuador, we almost always carry an umbrella with us since we never know about the weather. For example, in the morning until midday it could be really sunny and hot but then it could start heavely pouring rain and this´s something that happens the whole year since we don´t really have the 4 seasons (it´s a real pain in the a$$) Ecuadorians don´t really pay attention to sunburns, but my mom does and i learnt it from her to use a parasol when it´s sunny. I also used to think that it was an "old lady thing" but i started taking more care of my skin since i started watching k-dramas and stuff. I don´t see anything wrong about men using parasols on the contrary if i ever see a man using one i would totally see he cares more about his own health than his appereance and that´s beautiful :D. I didnt know it was called sun umbrella but since i live singapore where its either sunny or rainny so most people will buy umbrella that has uv protection function for dual purpose so we can use that umbrella when it rains and also use it to block us from the sun as well when its really hot. Not everyone in singapore uses umbrella when its sunny. Some don't care and just walk in the sun but you will still people using them here and there esp when the sun can be unbearably hot that day. I do use the umbrella sometimes too when it gets too hot and sunny.
I feel your pain with the heat. It’s been between the upper 80s to mid 100s out west since mid June. I think it’s fine to what you need to do to keep yourself safe.

I’m from Ontario and I do see people using sun umbrellas sometimes! It’s still really rare though. It’s such a smart idea, I think people from other countries and definitely men included should start using them! like you said, portable shade!! Also people here do tend to lean more towards having no fear of UV rays, which is not ideal lol. I wear sunscreen on my face every single day no matter the season, and on my body if I’m going to be outside. I’m always reminding people close to me to do the same!! An approach to the sun somewhere in between how Korea handles it and Canada would be the perfect balance :)

I played with a parasol as a little girl in Pennsylvania, USA. When we moved to Florida we did occasionally see people using umbrellas when out in the sun.
Koreans are smart to cover up. We all take D3 here. Not weird.
We had 105 degrees a lot in Virginia. In New york state we are getting a lot of rain. Younger people are getting skin cancer.

Have you tried making ice cream at home? When I lived in India I lost weight too. The big meal of the day was at 9pm. Then off to the movies. The theaters were pretty fancy. We wore saris in the evening. I tried a Korean/Indian fusion with your yummy butter fried rice recipe. 🙂
I live on the west coast (U.S.) and have seen people walking around with parasols. Once, it was an "Ajumma" in L.A.'s Koreatown. Another time it was a super "Goth" person, dressed head to toe in black velvet and lace (on a hot summer's day). Maybe Ajummas and Goths secretly hang out together and drink Makgeolli and Absinthe and talk about how much they despise the sun ;)
Personally, and although I'm not ready to rock a parasol, I'm all for daily sun protection.

I'm from Spain and sun umbrellas are not common. People here even use oil for the skin so they get tanned faster, that means they don't even apply suncream to go to the beach, neither to go out everyday :))
I live in australia where the sun is sort of a big part of the culture and how we sell the country to tourists. We used to have an atrocious record for skin cancer but since the early days we’ve had better health campaigns and people are generally slightly more careful. Not wearing sunscreen all the time even in winter careful but definitely trying to limit time in the sun, popping on a hat etc

I live in key west florida USA and we’ve started using sun umbrellas 2 yrs ago. Really helps a lot! It’s summer here all year long today it’s 100 degrees and 90 percent humidity! I’m over it! Lol!

as hot as florida gets you don't see people using a sun umbrella most time it has to be pouring down rain in order to use ... as far as sunblock if i'm going to beach or theme park i always put sunblock on my face and neck shoulders and i have to put it on my feet...lol .... I always use a lip balm with spf and i have to put a thin layer on my nose at all times .... I don't mind the sun being i like to have a tan.
Portuguese living in Korea here! And I have had the same experience as you! Plus, Portuguese people live for the beach and the sun and love a good tan. The only time I had ever seen a sun umbrella before coming to Korea had been in an old photograph my grandma showed me! And even that was in a beach context, where to this day we use the big sun umbrellas you mentioned. Been really missing the beach here in Korea, but everytime I go to the beach and see everyone fully clothed, I feel so self-conscious to enjoy the beach as Westerners do, and I am afraid I would be disrespectful to Korean culture if I did (?). Not sure about that but it's definitely a concern for me.
PS: Regarding sunscreen, we are very conscious of it, including men, back home because the sun is such a big part of the culture. It's quite publicised and everyone is aware of the risks, and it's the first thing you do the second you get to the beach or pool, etc. But the majority of tourists from other European countries that do not have as much sun, don't usually use sunscreen (not to generalise!! But it's quite a big topic in Portugal as most i.e. German and British tourists get severely sunburnt and go to the beach at 12pm, whereas Portuguese people go have lunch at that time, to avoid the sun at that hour.) Crazy!
After travelling in Asia I also adapted the sun umbrella, living in Germany it's also seen as strange, but I just don't care, when the sun is to intense I just need it

The issue is tanning. East verses west has very different ideas on sun exposure & what's considered beautiful. Porcelain skin is considered beautiful in Asia whereas deepest tan is preferred in other parts of the world. I live in Australia & am pale. I also burn easily so I do stand out using umbrella more for shade than anything in summer.
What I noticed here in the Phils. Is that even on the hottest days most people don't really use umbrellas and I dont think a lot of people also know the risks of not wearing sunscreen especially of not putting some on their faces. I know there's a lot of reasons for this because having a skin care routine is not really popular or a common practice here unless if you're part of the younger generation that has been exposed to it, or if you're aware of it or if you just have enough money to spend and invest on it. Everyday is really hot here cuz we only have sunny or rainy days.. I may be wrong about this but this is also based on my personal experience.
When I used to live in Vancouver we had an incident where people were using umbrellas in the snow and it was all over the news at that time trying to define how umbrellas are only used in the rain. We do have very few people using sun umbrellas in summer but mostly they are older woman scrolling in Chinatown.
I agree with the precautions you mentioned Sara. I think its more because in Canada we have so much cold weather so when people see the sun they are like lets soak up as much as possible.
I have personally used a sun umbrella because I'm very prone to heat stroke. I'm also super pale so factor 50 all the way!

@@2hearts1seoul hahaha yesss! the rain coat or a good water resistant jacket! I have been brain washed now for so many yrs ( 25+ years in Canada 🤣), I am now one of them. But let me tell you, I am still team umbrella in my heart 💜 We get way too windy to use one anyway, it just flips 😳.

Sarah that beige top looks fabulous on you! Loved your topic about the sun. Im Canadian and also had culture shock when I came to Korea and saw people so covered up on really hot days. I have been in Korea since 2015 and have not yet used a sun umbrella but this summer has been so hot that I started considering it...havent broken down yet tho lol. When I go out for a walk with my baby I have been putting an ice pack covered in aoft cloth on him to keep him cool haha it actually works pretty well. Also, I never wore sunscreen everyday on my face in Canada. I didnt even know u were supposed to do that until i came to Korea. Also Korean sunscreens are sooo much better than the ones u find in Canada! But now I wear sunscreen on my face almost every time I go outside every season. If I dont go outside I don't usually put it on tho. In Canada I used to wear tank tops and lower cut shirts without a second thought but I noticed now in Korea my clothing is so much more modest. I feel so uncomfortable wearing a spaghetti strap top when going out. Korea has definitely changed me. Stay safe and healthy. Thanks for the awesome content as always! I live in the US where we worship the sun and live for the tan. It's only in the last five years or so that I had the realization that tanning might be bad for my skin. Now, I rock the Caspar look 12 months a year.

In Romania people are obsessed with tanning. Most people don't use spf in the summer let alone all year long. if you're pale like I am be prepared for endless remarks about your skin tone during summer. Once a car stoped next to me while I was walking on the sidewalk so the driver could yell at me to get a tan ugh. I'm very into skincare so I wear spf daily on my face and neck but I only reapply it during the summer. I've been to dermatologists who were shocked I use spf daily so even medical proffesionals aren't very concerned about sun exposure.
Where I am from is almost all year sunny and hot but I do not buy sun umbrella because it does not work for rain nor strong winds (not practical for me and it too lacy enough to make me squirmed). What I used was an anti-UV umbrella (dark colour outside and silver inside or vice versus). I ensured the UV umbrella I bought is not only can shield from UV, also able to withstand strong winds during raining seasons so that the umbrella will not flip inside out and cause it to break the skeleton of the umbrella.
In Germany I have Never Seen anyone use a sun umbrella. I even got weird stares from my colleagues at work when i told them that I use sunscreen on my face every day 😅

I’m from Puerto Rico and sun umbrellas aren’t a thing here. Some people use normal/rain umbrellas for shade when/if necessary. Generally we trie to use sunscreen as often and as much as possible, unless is a person who is into being tan all the time.
People are conscious about it but I don’t think is an essential daily thing in their lives yet.
I think a big part of the culture differences on the topic about the sun has to do with their respective “beautiful standards”. Westerners WANT to be more tan as opposed to Asians who want to be more light skinned. My gf is white and she’ll either buy tanning lotion or go to tanning spas if possible. Or whenever we go to the beach she’ll sun tan as much as possible. As for a western guys perspective, we kinda don’t care about the sun at all (and that on its own is a thing here. It’s seen as less “manly” to take care of yourself so much). I don’t speak for everyone, this is just how I view it. Let me know you’re thoughts on what I just said 🤙🏽

Filipino-Canadian here in Toronto and what it generally boils down to is this in most of Asia fairer(lighter/whiter) skin is the beauty standard therefore most asians will avoid the sun where as in the West the goal is a nice golden tan.
My husband said he uses a big umbrella attached to his golf cart on hot sunny days, and now more guys are doing the same on the golf course😉

Born and raised in Malaysia which is HOT every damn day. Basically any woman will use a sun umbrella when they are out walking in the sun. But not the guys. I think they just find it 'sissy' probably. Now that I'm living in Australia, no one here uses the sun umbrella but due to the high skin cancer rate here with the thin ozone layer, Australians are pretty good with their sun blocks. Was walking pass a park back in summer one day and a group of primary school kids were having a game of football and they were all spraying their sun blacks on without adults telling them to. Pretty impressed.
We definitely do not take the sun seriously in England. I think where historically we haven't had consistently warm weather, we have a bit of a sun worshipper attitude! But we've had horrendous heatwaves every summer for years now and I think people really do need a shift in attitude and more respect for the sun! Agree with you Sarah, I don't know anyone here who would wear suncream on their face unless they were at the beach / going to be outside all day but only in the summer on a sunny day!
Born in an island /country & also growing up in an Asian upbringing half the time, The use of having an umbrella was a natural thing for me to have on hand . ☂ ( where I live, half the people do take precaution while the other half are used to being in the sun all the time . Plus everyone here uses their car for transportation especially with the Aircon on , and protecting them from walking out the door in the burning sun .☀️) Now with this pandemic still going on , a lot of people are talking taking extra precaution , especially when having to wear a mask in this heat wave . 😷)
