Lyrics:
You're having a hard time and lately you don't feel so good
You're getting a bad reputation in your neighborhood
It's alright, it's alright
Sometimes that's what it takes
You're only human, you're allowed to make your share of mistakes
You better believe there will be times in your life
When you'll be feeling like a stumbling fool
So take it from me you'll learn more from you accidents
Than anything you could ever learn at school

Joel, who had once attempted suicide himself, stated in a 1985 interview, that he wrote the song as a way to help young people struggling with depression and thoughts of suicide. In his original draft, he was concerned that the song sounded too depressing so he re-wrote it with a bouncy, joyous beat and melody with lyrics that stressed personal forgiveness and optimism about life. Joel donated all the royalties from the song to the National Committee for Youth Suicide Prevention.

Early October 1985, I was a college freshman having a nervous breakdown, extremely depressed and suicidal. I was standing on a bridge high above the Mississippi River one afternoon, staring at the water, and waiting for people to be far enough away to stop me from jumping. I had my knock-off Walkman on, playing a local radio station, and at that instant and Your Only Human/Second Wind came on, playing into my ears over my headphones. I immediately, focused on the music the words Billy was singing about not giving up on life. I listened to the entire song and I didn't jump. Today, I'm 57 years old, Billy's music has carried me though my entire life. His music is the soundtrack of my soul. Thank you, Billy, for the new songs, thank you for the old songs. Thank you for sharing immense talent with us. And thank you for saving me

Billy Joel: Sings upbeat song and saves a life
Homelander: Smiles and pushes kid off the bridge
Omg so true
And lasers him half on his way down.
makes for compelling cinema/great scenes!

That actually sounds quite merciful considering the things Homelander has done. Especially considering his brutality is apparently dialed up about 30 notches in the comics
this is actually a lovely optimistic song about depression.
Does the truth live forever?
@@jbill2986 yes it does
Finally, I found this masterpiece again because of THE BOYS series.
The upbeat nature of a serious mental health issue along with the comedic presentation lightens the discussion but does open the mind for believing their is a second wind, keep fighting.
Great contribution to society
nice song
There's something very artistic about it. This video makes it much more obvious whereas the song just sounds like a "bad day" song.
Good luck comments section. Commenters from "The Boys" are on their way.
I'm here from the show as well, but I'm not gonna make the million comment about it because it's unoriginal and annoying as hell, and because about 95% of the people who've watched this today are here from The Boys.

Actually, I'm here for Adam Savage. That's him as the drowning kid.

This song actually saved my life in 1985. I was an 18 year old kid, confused, depressed, scared, had no idea if I wanted to go on. Saw this video on MTV several times and each time it made me feel better and eventually pulled out of the funk I was in. Still battle with mild depression at 47, but nothing bad enough to take my life.

Always listen to Billy.
In '85, Billy released this; Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II!, his most accomplished album. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "You're only human". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about self forgiveness and the fact that you matter. It's also a personal statement from Billy Joel himself. - Patrick Bateman.

I wasn't quite at that point, but the song, lyrics and message helped me countless times to tough it out through many soul-crushing moments in my life. Billy Joel in fact did seriously consider suicide, and as such, I deem him as a credible source of wisdom in that regard.
This song saved my life. I had lost someone close to me, and I fallen in with some dangerous people which led to me ruining an important relationship. I found my life ruined, and was being mistreated by my group, I was ready to completely give up. He could have treated his original band better. One of them committed suicide because of Billy's estrangement after he hired another band. John Puruntong Me too
Was 17 when this song came out. Saved my life as well. Changed my whole attitude toward life
Mine too, and every time I listen to this song I feel unstoppable.
when you realize that the drowning kid is actually a mythbuster
I had to look that up, how is no one else talking about that?!
WHAT?!?
@@Matter-Dark Yup, that's Adam Savage unless I'm mistaken.
.
Adam is actually scattered throughout the video as different characters. ...I think.
"Hey, uh, Annie, it's me again. I was just wondering, have you ever seen the music video for that Billy Joel song "You're Only Human"? There's this kid and he's climbing up a bridge and he's-he's gonna kill himself, but then Billy Joel steps out with his harmonica and tells him stop, you just have to wait for your second wind, and now I-I feel like I'm-I'm that kid and I'm gonna drown, and... and thank God I found my second wind because it's-it's you. You're my second wind. Um, look, I know it's exciting, uh, taking down Vought and being like James Bond and everything, but you've got to be careful, because that stuff can go to shit really quick... and you wind up hurting the people that... you love. Like the way that I hurt you. Um... Anyhoo... that's all I wanted to say. Second wind. Um, okay, thanks. Bye."
These comments of how this song saved their life also becoming a happier and better person really lifted my spirits.
When Billy Joel was younger he drank furniture polish to try to Commit Suicide himself but then his friend found him on the floor and took him to the hospital before it kicked him which saved Billy's life the hospital he wrote this song to teach teens/People that suicide is never the answer.
From my understanding, there was also a bottle of bleach next to the furniture polish, but Billy chose the polish because he though the bleach would have tasted bad.
Just remember .....scars are tattoos with better stories.
Yeppers.......
I've been "up on that bridge" a few times in my 40 years. Only recently have I been able to get things back together again and start having hope for the future. This song from when I was a kid once didn't mean anything to me, but now it means everything to me.
This brings me back to Mtv, I’m 14 & this & Pressure were my favs, even though he had much bigger hits. I love that you can hear Piano man at the end on the harmonica 🎶
Billy Joel offering us hope through Hughie, his apostle.
It’s also really funny that Billy Joel is helping this boy understand the meaning of life again. It’s like he’s a representation of Billy Butcher showing Hughe that everything can change. And Starlight also shows him that there is honesty and trust in the world which saves his happiness and hope. They both do, and it’s truly amazing.
Nice perspective 👍 does make sense :)
It’s not fuckin true
you know Billy Butcher is a villain right?
@@acringekeresokiskodmon8026 He's more like and Anti-Hero
@@mrhappy2117 an anti hero is somebody who does the right thing for selfish reasons, or does the right thing, but with questionable tools. Butcher fits neither category. He only cares about himself, he betrays his friends and he doesn't care how many innocents he has to kill
My middle school years were rough and every day I wished I was dead. One day, for some reason, I started listening to my parents' Billy Joel CDs. I knew some of the songs and so I listened to the rest. This song came on and I was instantly hooked. Somehow it made me feel just a little bit better. It was years until I learned the story behind the song. Wow. That was quite a moment. The video makes it pretty clear, and had to be pushing the boundaries back then. Maybe this song saved my life. This will always be my favorite song.
I love all of Billy's songs, but this one has got to be one of my favorites.
Everyone talking about 'The Boys' and I'm here because I enjoy Billy Joel.
Wow you’re so special
@@benquadinaros2210 Aww, thank you. ❤🥰❤

I keep wondering how many lives this music saved
Not enough.
Never enough. 🥲
best billy joel song of all time, thanks the boys! (And hughie)
Whos here from The Boys?
I'm here, team butcher
1985, I was 23. I narrowly missed committing suicide. I wore out my 2ndW tape. Listened to it, rewind, repeat, again, and again, and again.it was pivotal, timely, and important to my continuing.
Throughout the years, whenever I find myself in deep depression not wanting to face life, I again listen repeatedly.
My now 17 yo son is struggling. I introduced him to this amazing gift.
We listen on repeat.
Thank you
Bec Steffens-Peck good stuff. if you can take your son to a Joel concert. It’s a truely uplifting experience.
Yay. Two precious lives saved. I tell my kids life is great it's the crap that's beyond your control that make u give up. Just Don't. Move in. Crap happens. It's supposed to. U have the POWER not to give in. Can't fix it move on. And never kill yourself over anything that doesn't love u back money people. What a waste concerning yourself with waste. Nope. Stay healthy happy and just move on. Love ya.

Billy Joel after the boys season 2 came out: STONKS
😂😂😂
billy joel songs are such a comfort to me. this song in particular is so incredibly special. i've struggled with severe depression and suicidal thoughts for the last 7 years. i've attempted 4 times, been in and out of mental hospitals. i discovered this song in a very depressive episode in my life. i was dealing with my abusive mother, i had just lost all of my friends, and i felt so alone and like if i was gone it wouldn't really mean anything to anyone. i had planned that night to take a bunch of sleeping pills, but then i came across this song. i watched this music video over and over again, it made me feel so seen. it was exactly what i needed to hear at that point in time. i became obsessed with billy joel, buying albums, listening to his songs 24/7. he's an artist that holds such a special place in my heart. i wish i could thank him, i wish i could tell him how much his music has saved me, and how it comforted me in times when i needed it. i'm still struggling, but at least i know if nobody's got me, billy joel's got me.
I know it's been a year, but I hope you're doing alright. Sometimes all people need is an encouraging word. Some of us are so starved of it. If it means anything, I hope you reply.
@@bigsauce1116 hey, thank you so much for this reply. it's incredibly sweet. im still kicking thankfully! there are definitely still challenges but i have really good friends in my life now who can help me through it. i still love billy joel and am so grateful for his music. :) i hope you are doing well too!
