VEHICLE EMISSION TAX ON EVERYONE

  • The much loved dual cab ute is going to increase by around $15,000 if everything goes to plan. Money aside, there is a bigger problem here than shear cost. The fact we are being forced into an electric future needs to be taken seriously, and I for one would like to see a solution for some very important problems that exist around electric vehicles, as the cost of this tax will hurt the back pocket for sure, but the true cost of what it is trying to achieve will hurt in a completely different and long lasting way.

Today's ev is tomorrow's toxic waste problem. My 3 40 series are 50 yrs old and will outlive me and are almost 100% recyclable.

Totally agree. I just wonder what will happen to a transport company when they buy a new truck to deliver our groceries. What kind of tax are they gonna get hit with. Oh and how do the EV cars get delivered, they don't fly themselves!!!

We have politicians that are being advised by people living in high rise apartments in the middle of the city and have know idea how things actually work next they will ban semi trailers for the roads

This woke green madness is crazy. Labor is no longer a workers party. Labor also raised the fuel tax. We now pay 50 cents per litre fuel tax which further impacts the price of everything as trucks are used to deliver everything to the supermarkets. Electricity prices have risen under Labor. The recent income tax cuts go nowhere near compensating us for all these extra taxes.

All trades and I mean all trades should now increase their government invoices 5x the price. These idiot politicians don't realize how much we need these vehicles on the road

You’re obviously aware it’s not a tax. Just to preface I’m a diesel owner (Ranger) and drive a hybrid for work. I’m a 4x4 driver who uses his vehicle for its intended purpose, going off road to places you can’t with a standard passenger vehicle.
It’s not a tax, it’s an emission standard/target that will be released. It’s also a holistic standard across a manufacturer. You use the Hilux as an example, the manufacturer is Toyota. A Toyota dealer had said to me in 2022 that all Toyota cars will be offered in Hybrid technology by 2026. Toyota has also announced they plan on 10 new battery electric vehicles in 2026. That means that if they sell enough of the more advanced and fuel efficient/no fuel cars then they shouldn’t (in theory and good faith) pass on the penalties. (Safety of EV’s aside)
So as an example, on my suburban street there is 40 or so houses with cars. 7 4x4 vehicles that are all diesels. The rest are passenger vehicles. If we were to all go to Toyota on January 2 2025 to buy a new car and the passenger ones went electric and the 4x4 owners (myself included) went with new diesel 4x4’s then (in theory and good faith of Toyota) the passenger cars will in-fact offset any additional ‘costs’ of the diesel or petrol 4x4. Therefore the price of those vehicles shouldn’t rise. That is all dependant on the manufacturer doing the right thing for the consumer…..highly unlikely.

Yes, fair point mate, and like you I hope they pass on the offset in the form of savings off the diesel vehicles. Just a bit scary that the Goverment is having such an effect on what we end up being offered in the first place, as I believe there is to many problems with evs yet to go all out

I’m by no means defending the government but it’s not them determining what we buy. It’s the manufacturers. The technology is there, it’s in most euro countries right now.
During Covid we saw the complete lack of availability of 4x4 cars and light trucks etc… I had to interview a truck dealer about it and he was told by Isuzu that Australia is about 1.5 days of production annually for them globally. We are too small so the manufacturers don’t take us seriously.
Look at the availability of the new model 70’s and 300’s….will be interesting if stock seems to get better come January next year….when they’ll be able to ‘charge’ more due to additional emissions standards….

Not all EV owners buy them to be “green” and save the world. My car is a diesel touring 4WD and my wife’s car is the cheapest Tesla model 3 and it cost us $3/week to run. we use that most of the time and it helps save money for more touring.
It won’t be greenies buying EV’s, it will be uni students looking to buy the cheapest running car possible and they won’t even car how they get recycled because it’s a throw away society these days.

There literally isnt even a sustainable way to get that much power. It would take (i believe) a little less thab 10 000 acres coverd in panels that get full sun to power only half of australia

Absolute joke of a tax. EVs should be taxed as the environmental impact is greater.
The EV market will eventually die as it's not sustainable.
The government should be pushing and supporting the further development of hydrogen technology.
Let's hope the liberals repeal this tax.

Imagine taking an EV 4WD to the bush 4WDing then the battery overheats and starts a fire. Imagine the catastrophic bush fire it could cause!

I think something needs to be done otherwise Australia will be a dumping ground for dirty vehicles, that said it needs to be done in a way that is fair and reasonable with the science to back it up, slow and steady will always wins the race

Just wondering where you are getting your information from. The information l have is the it isn't a tax as explained in a previous comment and is only bringing us in line with the country's that motor companies produce there vehicle's for which is certainly not Australia. I love my 200 series and also have a bt50 ute for our farm but if in 4 years time if they don't make a ute with a deisel motor they don't make a ute with a deisel motor and what Australians do or say will make no difference. By the way trucks are except form these new rules

You are right it’s not called a tax. But if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck it’s usually a duck. The point is they are forcing car companies and the consumer into something other than combustion vehicles which I think is great if the alternative is actually a step in the right direction. But the alternative at the moment is ev, and I don’t believe this is the answer. So even though what seems to be the vast majority don’t agree that electrification is the answer we are forced to pay for the experiment anyway.

Personally I agree with the emission tax … if you been to places like Paris & London… you can at times taste diesel in the air…..So the push for alternative ideas needs to happen… whatever that happens to be…. But one thing for sure Australia is not set up for the EV revolution…. So lots of Questions need answered … Labor and the Greens are going to do some harm to the economy and people’s lives if this is not done or pushed right….
