This piece is from a sheet music book for a pianist, from the silent film era of the 1920s. The title says for which movie scenes it should be played: “Oppression, forced labor, coercion, murmuring,” and the duration is indicated - 2 minutes 20 seconds.
A real question: why do all of these Russian composers love to write in 6 flats or 7 sharps? Aside from the base line, the melody sounds a lot like a Chopin prelude… was this a Russian homage, by any chance?
My first guess is, to explore tonalities that weren't used so often in the times before. There were probably some dynamics going on that led to this, to write in distant tonalities. Maybe it was simply en vogue.
I picture a somber funeral procession moving slowly through an old cemetery on a cold, dreary, rainy autumn day. The constant crescendo throughout the piece reminds me of a grieving person slowly coming to the realization and acceptance that the death of their loved one is final and complete.
i love when you paint those pictures, it gives an interesting quality to the music. Everybody thinks of something else. Music is an interesting language.
