And on the vpet/video game side of things, in spite of Bandai Japan owning a Pokemon toy license, they have yet to make a pokemon DiM card for Vital Bracelet like they did with Medabots. Both Kyurem and Necrozma could use the jogress (DNA Digivolve) mechanic too and they could make up an Omegamon style jogress with Armarouge and Ceruledge like they made Omedamon with Metabee and Rokusho (Violet Omedgemon?) . Its armor could be made of Registeel Digizoid like how Omedamon's is made of Cyplasium Digizoid.
To be fair, fans can like shows whether or not the toys are implemented well. I appreciate when they are smart with toy use and use the entire cast, but not everyone notices that. I blame toys for pidgeonholding the lead as over accessorized, or being intrusive to mecha designs like that have during the 2010s.
I really do like the Tokusatu toys, because they're practically Show accurate. They make you feel like you actually have the item from the show. I would be lying if i didn't crack a smile getting my hands on a gimmick i thought looked cool.
I've just gotten into Gundam and I think this is applicable to that franchise now. Sometimes the "selling toy" aspect can be obvious (when a suit gets replaced/upgraded too early, or the entire Build franchise), but I think it's great to have some attachment to the Mobile Suits and have the model kits displayed on my desk. Like the Witch From Mercury series for example. I wasn't sold on the Darilbalde at first, but episode 3 made me appreciate its cool points and want to purchase it.
Honestly i love the toys of tokusatsu. It's what makes them unique. It's just not the same without noisy toys shouting at you while transforming y'know
Tokusatsu is great in spite of it's toys. When I was watching Kamen Rider OOO with friends they made the observation that it was ironic that certain episodes have an anti-greed and anti-corporation message in a series made to sell you things. I like to think of it instead that the people working on the show care so much about making a show with good morals that they don't care if it runs contradictory to the supplemental material and merchandising.
To counterpoint, some series do a better job at integrating their toys into the show than others, and I think that can be a fair reason why somebody would prefer one series over another. I think it's a delicate balance to have the show introduce the toys they want to sell at a scheduled time and write it in appropriately to keep immersion, and not everybody can do it consistently well every year.
Personally coming from an American viewer that grew up around Power Rangers and honestly Dragon Knight (yes not Ryuki 😭) I was never bothered by all the product placement and now being older and watching Kamen Rider and some Super Sentai I still don't mind some things I expect like all the cliche getting a power up out of nowhere or a beserk form they learn to control to me it's all just toku charm, with some of my favorite Heisei era season being W, Gaim and Build ad well as Zero One and Geats in Reiwa I'm totally down with the gimmick toys although rip my wallet but I'm closing in on getting all my Zero One stuff I wanted and going to look towards Geats now 🙏🏻🙏🏻
buying toku toys and merch is the same as buying any kind of anime or comic merch. or for those less cultured sports memorabilia its just to show love for what you like
I like it when gimmicks are made in some ways that don't make me feel like I'm buying hollow pieces of plastic just to unlock what I already have. Like the gashats.
Thanks Marcos, this video was great and I for one enjoy collectable gimmicks from Sentai, Rider, and Ultra, they make the show more fun since the hero gets more power and thus EVOLVES the fighting (seriously compare Ultraman Z's fighting styles from all the way from Alpha Edge to Delta Rise Claw), and regardless of how gimmicky Toku can be, I still love it
The tokuboomers as what Marcos refer to are genuinely one of the WORST things to get into this small community, like toku fandom are already small and these assholes just came in and point fingers and harass people who likes certain things that aren't the 90s kamen rider not knowing how much toei just do not care about the 90s rider much other than Amazon, ichigo, black and that's it Our community is so small and these toxicity are genuinely making the community more unwelcoming than it seems
personally the comparatively large number of "gimmick" items in Kamen Rider compared to other mainstream toku shows like Sentai and Ultraman is one of the main reasons I prefer Rider to those shows, because I have the attention span of a flea
One of the 'problems' I have with toku is that starting with heisei phase 2, there has been a more heavy focus on the toy collectibles, with recent years having a boom in the amount of drivers in the show just to have more drivers. Although I do love that there has been support with missing items recently with Ex-Aid and Build, for as much flack as I give Bandai, they've also upped the quality in the drivers and I'll still keep buying it all (not the CSM though(yet)).

I do however hate hearing about shows getting cancelled because the "wrong demographic" bought the toys. I think the suits should focus on making money and let the creative run wild. Every media exists to sell you something, toys or otherwise. Tokusatsu is made to sell toys, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is made to sell toys, Transformers, He-Man; even the first Iron Man movie was picked to use Iron Man because that's the toy kids said they'd like to have most. There is nothing wrong with that; though it can get a bit annoying when a show introduces a new form for the first 17 episodes mostly to sell toys, or 9 different belts. I have a lot of merch of my favorite seasons of these shows and I don't regret it and I only buy them when I have the money for it. My worst problem is running out of space to display them.

This was a great video. It's interesting Marcos made this video because it's related to me going through the Ultra Series. To be honest my plan was (still is) to go through Ultra Q to the introduction of Zero. I was going to hold off, mainly because I was going to take a break after watching that much Ultraman, but because of the New Gen Heroes shows starting to use the toy gimmicks. It's one of the reasons why I kind of stopped watching Kamen Rider after Fourze. And as Marcos and so many others have said, these shows are aimed to sell toys to kids, I get that. I only really get irked when the gimmick requires buying multiple toys to get the basic function of the gimmick going. Like Geats from the get go is going to be absolute hell to collect for the SH figurearts or the gacha line because of the armor combinations.
The one thing about toku toys that I'm not a big fan of (especially the campaign/theater/magazine/premium bandai exclusive items) is that they're ridiculously expensive on whatever site you. like why, people even myself just want to buy the toys and it's not fair for us to pay a lot of cash.
I don’t like people putting Toku as a blanket statement especially when there just referring to the henshin hero genre. You cannot say toku is meant to sell toys when it is a entire medium like anime.
For me, I can't really get into to later heisei and reiwa series because of how blatant the toys can look Series like ex aid and revice have very loud and plastic-y suit designs that I can't really see as anything but walking action figures when theyre not pretty asian boys trying to look cool playing with their oversized transformers belt; the showa rider suits are definitely theatric for some, but I feel the designs and gimmicks blend in well enough for it not to be distracting It's gotten to the point that post and pre ishinomori rider occupy different places of my brain, I'm not saying heisei and reiwa are bad but I find it hard to believe they're part of the same franchise as showa
Lets be real, 80% of the toku fans pirate the shows but having a means to support it via buying that one big fucking piece of plastic that resembles a stamp/eyeball/usb drive that yells out its name and does a little jingle is good to have if it means im actually supporting the show i like.
Wierd how he says toys to the show so much yet he evades saying "Toetic", the term for a show getting writting to include toys, that happend in Batman forever.
I miss the shows and toys of the 1970s. The shows didn’t put in cheap looking plastic toys that didn’t fit the rest of the character design, and some the toys that did exist were beautifully detailed die cast metal ones.
The problem with Tokusatsu is not the heavy promotion of toys. The true problem is that BANDAI DIDN'T MAKE A VISTAMP BASED OFF OF KAMEN RIDER SHIN.
And on the vpet/video game side of things, in spite of Bandai Japan owning a Pokemon toy license, they have yet to make a pokemon DiM card for Vital Bracelet like they did with Medabots. I don’t like people putting Toku as a blanket statement especially when there just referring to the henshin hero genre. You cannot say toku is meant to sell toys when it is a entire medium like anime.
For me, I can't really get into to later heisei and reiwa series because of how blatant the toys can look
Series like ex aid and revice have very loud and plastic-y suit designs that I can't really see as anything but walking action figures when theyre not pretty asian boys trying to look cool playing with their oversized transformers belt; the showa rider suits are definitely theatric for some, but I feel the designs and gimmicks blend in well enough for it not to be distracting
It's gotten to the point that post and pre ishinomori rider occupy different places of my brain, I'm not saying heisei and reiwa are bad but I find it hard to believe they're part of the same franchise as showa
My problem is when it cuts into run time. A transformation should not take 1/6 to the run time.
Me remembering some of this problem in Ultraman R/B series when they transform and type change.🗿
Lets be real, 80% of the toku fans pirate the shows but having a means to support it via buying that one big fucking piece of plastic that resembles a stamp/eyeball/usb drive that yells out its name and does a little jingle is good to have if it means im actually supporting the show i like.
If only the costumes were sold to the US consumers.
Note to self: write scripts that allow marcos to breathe next time.
Power Rangers toys since 2019 are no longer made by bandai
American cartoons are shaking rn
Wierd how he says toys to the show so much yet he evades saying "Toetic", the term for a show getting writting to include toys, that happend in Batman forever.
Ryukendo had toys?
Takara made them. Look up the toys here on UA-cam.
I miss the shows and toys of the 1970s. The shows didn’t put in cheap looking plastic toys that didn’t fit the rest of the character design, and some the toys that did exist were beautifully detailed die cast metal ones.
What about your houses
First
Not enough cool action figures from Toku. I have better American ones
