Greatest Theologian alive today is Sinclair B. Ferguson in my opinion. The late R.C.Sproul referred to Sinclair as the greatest theologian he knew and that is some high praise. Sinclair Ferguson has recently started a 5/10 min daily podcast for Ligonier entitled "Unseen Things" and would recommend this to anyone.
Sproul was not just being nice. He loved and appreciated Ferguson. SF has an amazing & approachable way of sharing absolute truth. All that said, Michael Horton is my GTAT.
Interesting that he would say so. If asked I think many would pick Sproul over Ferguson when Sproul was alive because of his breath of expertise as well as his communication skill. I've never given Ferguson much of a read because I've found his thick Scottish accent to be tiring to listen to and that he is a bit monotone and slow when he speaks. Also, I'm not familiar with many of his works besides his works on sanctification and a primer on ecclesiology.
Guys, Here is our Savior YaH The Heavenly FATHER HIMSELF was Who they Crucified/Pierced for our sins and “HERE IS THE PROOF” From the Ancient Egyptian Semitic: "Yad He Vav He" is what Moshe (Moses) wrote, when Moses asked YaH His Name (Exodus 3) Ancient Egyptian Semitic Direct Translation Yad - "Behold The Hand" He - "Behold the Breath" Vav - "Behold The NAIL"
I too think Dr Ferguson is incredible. I think he’s a bit underrated. Dr Sproul was a great theologian and communicator, his communication was his gift, but i believe Dr Ferguson is an even better systematician than RC was. His grasp of theology is awesome, and that clarity really comes out when he speaks. Thats why i so live listening to him. I hope pastor Matt would do a video on Dr Ferguson next. 😊 @mattheweverhard
One of my favorite things about Beeke is his work in the area of family worship. No one has dedicated more material to this vitally important topic, both in terms of theology and in terms of practical use. Family Worship Bible Guide is a must-have for any father/mother.
Beeke is such a blessing to the church. As someone with no formal training or education i am able to easily understand his systematic theology and it is so refreshing how he applies it. You can see his deep love for Christ and the church in his writing and preaching
Here is our Savior YaH The Heavenly FATHER HIMSELF was Who they Crucified/Pierced for our sins and “HERE IS THE PROOF” From the Ancient Egyptian Semitic: "Yad He Vav He" is what Moshe (Moses) wrote, when Moses asked YaH His Name (Exodus 3) Ancient Egyptian Semitic Direct Translation Yad - "Behold The Hand" He - "Behold the Breath" Vav - "Behold The NAIL"
Beeke is all about the Benjamins. It's the money baby, the money!!! When it comes to the Puritans you can write forever and apparently make infinite profits. Talk about Prosperity Gospel preaching at its best!
I'm not KJV only, but I appreciate the fact that Joel Beeke only uses the KJV in his preaching and teaching, at least as far as I know. It shows that one can be a modern theologian while using the KJV and still be very clear in his preaching while at the same time being very relevant for today.
Being Reformed myself and a King James Bible believer, I love the fact he unashamedly, unapologetically preach from the Authorized Version. Also The Reformation Heritage Study Bible which Dr. Beeke's the general editor is one I highly recommend.
R.C. Sproul is hands-down was the best contemporary reformed theologian who popularized reformed theology. Beeke is hands-down the best resource person today when it comes to the subject of the Puritans and reformed theology.
Frame and Beeke are both giants! I have set under the teaching of both. I have read deeply from both. What a joy it is to be alive at the same time they are. Praise God for their lives and contribution to the kingdom!
My husband and I have been so blessed by many of his works! Such a well-balanced Calvinist. Full of Grace and Truth! Presbyterians could really use more of this style of Christian thinking and living!
You create great, careful, gateway videos to such a diverse array of topics. Thank you brother. Good job having a backbone with your detractors, but also patiently and graciously and clearly articulating your position. Beeke and Frame have been such blessings to me lately. Thank you.
I nominate myself as the greatest Theologian today and of all time. The fact that this so-called Christian named Matthew Everhard is engaging in such fruitless and vein topics as who is the greatest Theologian is astounding. Despite this I still hold to myself nomination. What say you, George Lukey? My theology can be a blessing for you as well!
@@johnhartnett3629 Isn't this self-defeaing? For you to assess Mathew as engaging in a vain/fruitless topic here, is itself to assume you have the right to do so. That's a moral, and therefore a theological judgement. If you're going to critique using sarcasm about hypocrisy, you have to do it less sloppily than this. Be more clear where exactly the Bible supports your claim. Or you'll be guilty of vain ("empty"/"fruitless") discussions, rather than pushing towards imitating the faith of fruitful Bible teachers.
I think Dr Beeke's greatest strength as a theologian is that he is not an innovative theologian. Most theologians cannot resist the urge to evolve the thought and theology they discover in their studies. Joel Beeke excels at collating, condensing and presenting Puritan thought in a way that is practical, ingestible, and understandable by modern man.
Thanks for turning me onto John Frame purchased his systematic theology and I also have it on audible and I’m listening to it. I highly recommend it: excellent!
Joel Beeke and Micheal V. P. Barrett preaching and writings introduced me to reform theology. I came from a dispensation Baptist upbringing ( still holding on to my cards closely to my Scofield reference note), but truly appreciate these men adoration of God and the expression of awe in a supreme power of the God of this and every thing in it.
The KJV Reformation Heritage Study Bible IS an amazing resource and I couldn't recommend it more highly! Joel Beeke is a great theologian in my opinion. I love his Puritan-oriented practical living for God's glory!
Dr.Everhard the more I watch your UA-cam videos the I respect and admire you. Hopefully when I come out to Ohio to visit my sister, neice, and brother in law that I have the chance to meet you in person and be part of your sunday worship. Over the last few weeks I've been researching what systematic theology to sink my teeth into. After today I think I will go and get Beeke's book on Puritan theology. in short I want to say thank you on giving me this suggestion on who to read. May after this I might tackle either Frame or Burkuff.
Thanks Pastor for this series. As a layperson it’s good to get some info on some modern theologians that we can also learn from to help us get to know the greatest theologian ever as you say. Thanks so much for all of your work.

I have a copy of the KJV Reformation Heritage Study Bible put out by Reformation Heritage Books. It is excellent. Not only does it explain the text, but there is a devotional section for each chapter of the bible that helps you apply the scripture to your life. It is wonderful. Great video. Oops, I typed this while watching the video and noticed that you mentioned the Bible toward the end of your video.
Listened to Beeke on various books, and I ordered several, including a full set, based on his recommendation.. I also have his Puritan Theology. Wonderful. I ordered the works of Thomas Goodwin based on him, have John Owen's works, Gills complete commentary on the way.. I live Reformation Heritage Books.. and Beeke is wonderful..
Beeke has written the largest systematic theology to date. The 4th volume comes out this year. Beeke also is involve d with the Dutch Translation Society. Theologians are like their books, they all have pluses and cons. Beeke is worthy of consideration. Robert Letham could be another. As far as Frame you can't dismiss Frame as being a major theologian. I had someone say he wasn't a christian. Matthew thanks for these topics, I find them interesting.
I think your qualifications were abundantly clear in the first video and kindly repeated in this one. Thought provoking videos. I have to go with Grudem…some concerns, however, on some “novel” views…I am a continuationist, not referencing issues related to this subject. Love Frame too!
Joel Beeke mentioned the Reformed Systematic Theology was from his class notes over the years, edited by Paul Smalley. I think that’s how he wrote most of his books as well. Isn’t it great that we aren’t forced to choose Frame or Beeke or anyone else as the greatest living theologian - but we’re free to appreciate them all?
The most consistent theologian in my opinion would be Dr Sam Waldron. But other than the exposition of the 1689 confession he hasn’t produced a full systematic theology. He is however a professor of systematic theology .
I'm so glad you did this video. I was one of the ones who was thinking of Beeke concerning this topic. I have no experience with Frame other than what you have shared with us through your own experience. Beeke helped me very greatly concerning assurance as well as Paul Washer. I love Beekes head, heart, and hands approach to theology.
“Greatest” is hard to define. In my opinion, Beeke is one of the most orthodox, readable, devotionally oriented, and historically aware theologians of the past 100 years. He’s not trying to push the limits or be innovative. He’s able to write on both the most technical and popular levels. His reformed systematic theology is by far the best series (3/4 volumes available) that I own in my library. I would recommend him over Vos, Berkhof, Bavinck…etc. Those theologians can come AFTER reading Beeke. You are not going to understand the historical background or philosophical debates in some of these other guys. Read Beeke first, then explore other ST volumes.
Ummm...am I missing the links you said you would post? Also does someone know where to get a good complete list of books by an author? Thanks again for a great video, I really appreciate your videos.
Mark Jones, has a good introduction to theology. And has written on broad subjects. I like Beeke. Frame still takes the top spot. Does G K Beale qualify?
If you don’t consider Beeke one of the greats, you have to admit he has been one of the most influential. The future generations will be indebted to him for the amount of literature he has reprinted and printed for the glory of Christ.
Maybe I will come visit next time I come home as how long have you guys been there? I used to belong to the PCA church in Pittsburgh near the airport called providence presbyterian. Where exactly are you north of Pittsburgh, Pastor?
There are those that will never understand the importance of commentaries or systematic theology books. They will automatically accuse you of putting man’s work over the Bible and Jesus. I deal with them regularly. I have two of the greatest systematic theology books, besides the Bible of course. Louis Berkhof’s Systematic Theology and John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion. I also have A Puritan Theology. Actually I got it and Louis Berkhof’s Systematic Theology on your suggestions. They are great books.
Sorry, brother for all the negative comments. I follow many "great" theologians. Many of the Ligonier Ministry teaching fellows are good, I also follow many textual critical scholars such as Dr. Dan Wallace, For the Old Testament, (since I'm in an OT post-grad program). Ellis R. Brotzman, Bruce Waltke. I love reading the Puritans. Just finished a bible study on The Valley of Vision.
I just found out that Joel Beeke preached at one of our church's sisters church this last week. I'm bummed that I missed it and didn't even know that he was going to be there. Thought that was pretty cool though. It's not a very big church by any means. So the fact that he would fly all the way across the country to killafornia to teach at a small church is really cool.
As far as conservative Reformed Theologians are concerned, Joel Beeke might be me favorite one. I don't dislike John Frame, but I'd put a few others ahead of him. Sinclair Ferguson might be my number 2. I'm limiting Reformed to Reformed Theologians in the Presbyterian church polity realm. I like some Reformed Anglicans like Gerald Bray, and some Reformed Baptists as well I knew what you meant in the previous video. The Puritans are cool!
Unfortunately one reason theology has joined politics as a universally divisive subject. Sad. But even people who call themselves Christians often behave poorly when what they say they believe differs from even friends and family members. 1 Peter 3:15 ESV - "but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,"
Matthew, I loved your video. I miss RC Sproul as Renewing Your Mind & Tabletalk Magazine are Foundation of my Reformed ed. Beeke is very noteworthy. I love Jonathan Edwards as well as the English Puritans. (Banner of Truth's 2vol. Works of Jonathan Edwards is amazing) My preference for a living theologian is Michael Horton tho. The White Horse Inn was a powerful impact on me in the 90s.
I agree that Joel Beeke is one the greatest but he is not the only one. Dr. Derek Thomas which I cut my teeth under his theology series on Sermon audio, Sinclair Ferguson, and RC Sproul. I have Joel Beeke's three-volume Systematic Theology, KJV Reformation Bible, and Puritan Theology with Study Guide and Meet the Puritans
Beeke almost always has a co-author and does rely on a team so how fair is it to call him the greatest theologian alive? Maybe the team of people putting out the most content in your category... Worth throwing Wayne Grudem in the ring, he was general editor for the ESV study bible and I believe is still on the board for the ESV. There's a lot of people given the money and team behind Beeke who would do the same volume of work.
I don’t want to speak for him but id assume he wouldn’t recommend a reformed Baptist as he’s Presbyterian. But I would put Piper or Grudem at the top of my list!
We got to be in the Bible. Perhaps 10 to 1 in the Bible vs. other books? If you don't know Nahum and your reading Joe Bob your wrong. The list goes on, but the Torah should be priority.
Very sad you have to even respond to what you've said.. and oh boy! You were misunderstood? What a shocker... I recently ordered Frames theology of Lordship, Systematic theology, etc... and I could care less personally about whether there's an issue or not in authors. I have an issue on some level regarding something, for just about everyone I read from.. or/ and listen to..Thank you for your insights and subjects.
John Piper? He hasn’t written a systematic theology, but he has covered an extraordinary amount of topics… just a thought if you want to continue this series!
No, it seems to me Dr. Beeke compiles the various ideas of various Reformed and Puritan theologians and organizes them for modern audiences. Now, this is HUGE undertaking and a gift to the church but "greatest" is really a stretch.
William Lane Craig is apparently completing a systematic theology. Not Reformed but he's certainly had a great career as a theologian and promoter of Christian philosophy.
Joel Beeke and RC Sproul are the two giants of era!

Also, I think he started selling books in his teens, so he didn’t launch everything all at once.

Beeke! A solid theologian, he is prolific for certain, I could not say who is best.

Huh!!! I'm sure I did this. I'll repost. Sorry!
This is tough. Beeke definitely has to be up there. I'm torn between him and Richard Gaffin at first thought.
Gaffin is good so is Rick Gamble. He blends systematic and biblical theology. Beeke is my go to.

Escondido theology (Amillienial/Two Kingdoms) is the most destructive force in the reformed camp.
The answer would be yes!
I'd still vote John Frame, but Joel Beeke is also great.
Thanks. I have so many great books and suggestions to read I don't think I'll get though them all, but I'll die trying.
It is it wonderous that The SON YEHOSHUA HAMASCHIACH has sent us lesser light to point to The LIGHT HIMSELF 🙏 ♨️ ✝️ 🕊 🛐 🔥 🤲
I would have Richard Muller up there.
He’s a very theologically informed historian in my opinion. Beeke is very historically informed theologian.
Works of Jonathan Edwards
is amazing)
My preference for a living theologian is Michael Horton tho. The White Horse Inn was a powerful impact on me in the 90s.
What do you think about Charles Lee Irons.
i always read joel beeke as in "beak" not "beekey"... 😭😭
Victoria Osteen is my favorite
I didn’t see the link to the Heritage Study Bible KJV
Too bad John Gerstner has passed, I would enter his name for consideration. Maybe you could do a video on the greatest Theologian of the 20th century.
I don't think Dr. Beeke would like a title/question such as this.
I hate to shut down this debate but Chuck Norris is the greatest. One kick theologically and any debate is finished.
Joel Beeke and Sinclair Ferguson. One day, Matthew Everhard.
When you start a discussion you get good people and crazy people to comment. 😂 That is normal.
Does Beeke do any podcasts?
I would not even waste breath on childish comments like you mentioned at the beginning of the video. I mean really. 😆
Where does Beeke stand on baptism?
Very sad you have to even respond to what you've said.. and oh boy! You were misunderstood? What a shocker... I recently ordered Frames theology of Lordship, Systematic theology, etc... and I could care less personally about whether there's an issue or not in authors. I have an issue on some level regarding something, for just about everyone I read from.. or/ and listen to..Thank you for your insights and subjects.
Next up, Alister McGrath the Anglican?? I will also say Lord willing, when it’s all said and done Jordan Cooper will be on this list.
Bruh
Maybe that's how a systematic theology should be???
John Piper? He hasn’t written a systematic theology, but he has covered an extraordinary amount of topics… just a thought if you want to continue this series!
John MacArthur
No, it seems to me Dr. Beeke compiles the various ideas of various Reformed and Puritan theologians and organizes them for modern audiences. Now, this is HUGE undertaking and a gift to the church but "greatest" is really a stretch.
William Lane Craig is apparently completing a systematic theology. Not Reformed but he's certainly had a great career as a theologian and promoter of Christian philosophy.
Wow, didn't know that. I'd be very interested in reading that. Thanks for the heads up
Have you heard of t.f Torrence?
You mean not Ray Heiple?
If he didn't play dumb, it'd probably be Hamilton.
...Is that why people won't shut up about that play?
I don't put my faith in man, but God alone. Man is sinful no matter who you are. I will fail you no matter how much I follow God
Not sure how familiar you are with contemporary philosophy but maybe “who’s the greatest Christian philosopher alive?” might be a fun topic too
