Ibn Babviyeh - the mistreatment of Sufis

For decades minority faiths have been persecuted against. The Sufi’s in particular have been subject to much violence.
Over two decades ago, what occurred in Ibn Babviyeh cemetry in the city of Rey, just south of Tehran, Iran is a tragic example of such ignorance.
The cemetery was originally made in remembrance of Ibn Babviyeh, a pious Shia muslim, and a prolific writer. By the year 368/978 AH he had written 245 books and treatises . Though many are no longer in existence, the majority have survived, including 'Uyun akhbar al-rids,The Springs of the Narrations of al-Reza; a compilation of hadith from Imam Reza.
The cemetery became home to many scholars, artists and pious men. It was a shrine for hundreds of thousands of Shia Muslims. Of the shrines in this ancient cemetery one was dedicated to the Angha family - a family with four generations of Sufi masters, whose ancestors trace back to the Holy Prophet of Islam PBUH.
Hazrat Jalaeddin Ali Mir Abolfazl Angha and Hazrat Mir Ghotbeddin Mohammad Angha were both buried at Ibn Babviyeh cemetery.
A beautiful shrine was dedicated to the lives of these great men of God. The beautiful mirror work was carried out by the same brothers who worked on the shrines of Amir Al Momenin and Imam Hossein in Najaf and Karbala, Iraq. Both the mirror work and intricate art-work celebrated the teachings of these pious men.
Hazrat Sahahmaghsoud Sadegh Angha and Hazrat Saleheddin worked tirelessly along side the artists in order to finish the shrine.
Unfortunately the 90s saw Ibn Babviyeh becoming the arena for the political parties in Tehran, the Mayor of Tehran and the Councillor of Rey. In 1997 officials ordered the destruction of the Angha shrine. This marked a pivotal point, it was clear that they were no longer welcome to practice their faith without fear.
It seems that where ego and struggle of power is at play, men aiming for such things will trample on anything, even the most sacred of places.
The destruction of Ibn Babviyeh cemetery was a direct attack on Sufis, and again the world stayed silent to the atrocities inflicted on the Sufis. If ever there was a sign of power struggle between two individuals, and the havoc it can leave in its trail, it's become evident in what has occurred in Ibn Babviyeh.

The mistreatment of the Sufis is such a sad reality, especially since they have such a rich and deep history in Islam, rooted in peace, love and self-knowledge. Having no desires for the political world, they have sadly been persecuted through the generations. Thank you for sharing this beautiful and informative documentary!
