idk if somebody already explained but hey ! placenta only develops if a baby is conceived . the period and the bleeding comes from the shedding of the inner lining of the uterus , which thickens in preparation to receive a fertilized egg , and so if the mature egg doesn't get fertilized , the uterus shed that extra layer and go back to its original thickness , the cycle repeats as the egg matures
