Shubha Mudgal sings a distinct brand of of khayal. Born in Allahabad to two Professors of English Literature, her versatile style is the result of study with a wide range of gurus - notably Ramashreya Jha ‘Ramrang’, Vinaya Chandra Maudgalya, Vasant Thakar, Jitendra Abhisheki, Kumar Gandharva, and Naina Devi. Her markedly individual style fuses ideas from across North India, with long sustained notes balancing acrobatic melodising. She is known for her detailed lyrical study too, regularly singing poems by Sufi saints and medieval mystics, and has made brief but successful forays into pop music.
Renowned for a strong social conscience, Shubha is one of the most prominent advocates for improving the treatment of women in Indian classical music. She has supported various radical movements who push for a more equitable distribution of power and resources in Indian society. She has also served on various national education committees, and runs Underscore Records with her tabla-playing husband Aneesh Pradhan, aiming to give Indian artists control of their own catalogue.
Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raga, said to evoke sringara [attraction, romantic love]. It uses the notes of Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPnS and an avroh [descent] of SnDPmgRS. Characteristically, Dha and Re only appear in the descending line, and tend to be approached from the notes immediately above. Ma is the vadi [king note]. Aniruddha, any art in its sublime perfection is spiritual. Moreover, for a land which taught spirituality equally through love (Bhakti yoga, Tantra at the extreme) and hatred (Samrambha yoga), your demarcation is at best artificial. Finally, what emotion a raag produces in one's mind is no one else's privilege. Therefore your comment is both naive and unwarranted.
She has slowed down the time and set all the notes and vibrations free in the air, and very smoothly, calmly and slowly she is playing with them...such a beautiful experience.

Maybe this is just the sound quality of the concert hall, but this Bhimpalasi sounds like it was sung in the heavens. Aneesh ji has played with such understanding and love. everytime, Shubha ji just amazes me.

The arrangement is exquisite
I am so happy to see that those who dont the know the language or not even exposed to Indian classical music, could still feel the ‘calm power’ in the voice of Shubha Mudgal, the singer. The name of this raag is Bhimpalasi, ‘Bhim’ in Hindi means something huge and immensely powerful. The genius of the singer is that when she sings this raag, her voice appears calm, but powerful, hence the comparison with ‘earth’ or ‘sitting lion’ is very befitting. Same singer, when singing other raag, will sound like droplets of rain falling. That’s why the vocal range of Indian classical singers is known to be the widest, from 3 to sometimes even 7 octaves. Normal adult human, can barely voice 2 octaves clearly, just for comparison.

I agree, but wish they would post the complete performance though. Not everyone has the privilege of travelling to London, however divine the music.
Indian music is so so rich. If we fail to preserve this we will lose our identity, our soul. She is the woman who sang 90s pop song ‘Ab ke saawan aise barse’ and its unfortunate to learn that her somg ab ke saawan is more popular than her classical legacy. Subha Mudgal ji you are a gift to Indian classical music.
God gas created so many different voices... to give ys the joy of music... it was grt listening to her singing n her husband playing the tabla...lucky!

This is so absolutely emotionally overwhelming :) its like tabla & tanpura is body and shubha ji's rendition of raag bhimpalasi is the soul
Sitting in candle light, I dream of stars and moons and the gossiping of foxes in the distant night, I laugh, I cry, I hold my pen and I forget words...I look at the droplets of wax from the candle slowed down on their trickling journey down while a carnal flame flickers above, in this moment my thoughts are like the ghungra I wear, unpredictable; which bell rings first......to me this music says just that.
