How to make chapters, sections and subsections in word

  • In this video I show you how to make chapters, sections and subsections using the heading styles in word and format them the way you want. Useful to know for making a thesis/ dissertation in word. After making the headings you can use the navigation pane to move to different places in the document which is useful if you have a very long document.
I wouldn't normally number the abstract but this is just an example of how to make the sections, not necessarily how they should be numbered or formatted.

I cant tell you how much of relief it is to have come across this. Ive undertaken a huge project almost three years ago. I needed this about three years ago. Ill leave it at that. At first my head was spinning because the video played to fast but once i started editing my heading a simple stop and play made it easy. Thank you for staying on the subject and making your way right through the subject matter.

Thank you thank you thank you! I had mistakenly defined 3 levels of Styles without doing a multi-level list. I was going crazy with manual "Start renumbering" on each section and subsection, and they would always wobble like mad. Thanks to your video I was able not only to follow your instructions regarding multi-level lists, but also to link a new multi-level list to the styles I had already defined. I de-numbered my whole document while keeping my styles, then applied the multi-level list with each level related to a style (you have to pull down the menu at the bottom of the multi-level list to find that option) and MAGIC happened! All 280 pages of this book were renumbered correctly, with 1.2.3 then a, b c. Big thanks Karina!

First: Thanks for the great info. Second: Thanks for the speedy demo. I'm so sick of people doing these in slow motion. I've seen far too many of these that would take your 5+ minute demo and explain the same thing in a 20 minute version. Those usually contain a dozen "Oh, wait. That's the wrong choice, let me do that again." Most of us need the nuts and bolts quickly as we've got a lot of experience with Word, just not this feature. If she goes too fast for you, hit the pause button. OTOH, it's almost impossible for knowledgeable users to speed up a slow demo as you're trying to guess where the next point may be and that makes the whole process even slower. Beautifully done, Karina!

Thank you very much for this. I use to insert a table of contents but was always not consistent with the headers for sub sections. As a result my captions would become all changed proceeding to the next chapter and if I edited the figure numbers they would not show up on my table. Now I understand from your video why word would give me the define multi list level because I was not doing this. Your video is the only clear one which explain this in depth. Thanks you saved me now that I am putting my Msc thesis chapters together...
