Traditionally I have only ever tied flies for trout and Salmon but I am taking my brother sea fishing for Mackeral here in Ireland. After watching your video I am going to tie my own feathers like yours here. Great video thanks for sharing.
Excellent video. I followed this video and the other one to make the rig complete and it worked like a charm. Way more fun to do it yourself than to buy these rigs from the shop. Now i can determine what hooks i use, what kind of color (ribbons) and thickness of the line. I already caught a bunch of mackerel with them. The feeling it gives when you get the first bites on your home-made lures is something special :) I'm going to check out more videos on your channel.
Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.
i had never heard of bird repellent tape until you mentioned it, it may work i am not sure it is a thick as the ribbon but give it try if you have some, it looks great cheers
it depends,(sorry) i use thirty five pound for a few reasons: it is springy and the lures are less likely to tangle around the man line, it is strong enough to deal with the rocky, snaggy, seaweedy places I fish, it easy to tie and also i can cast weights up to 3 1/2 ounces without fear of the line snapping. Holographic ribbon is normally plastic and waterproof, i have seen some made from paper. I have recently been fishing with 6lb line using a drop shot rig. What are you fishing for?
Very nice rig, simple easy to make. Will try it! If it works, more power to you.I will teach it to my student fisherman.Thank you brother and good luck to the fisherman of this world, and the next.
Hello amigo.. I miss yours videos... I don't see new one from long time. You made very good job and very interesting ideas. Regards from Cancún México.
These are great tutorials, finding them very useful for making my own Mackerel lures, I'm going to try them tonight in Helvick Head in Waterford, Ireland. I never thought to cover the knot with nail varnish until I saw this. these are quick to make and look as good as any lures that you buy in the shops. I used bird repellent ribbon instead of the ribbon that you have, but it should still do the same job.
Paul, I am looking to start making my own sabiki rigs. I am tired of getting cut off by spanish and blues. I am thinking of using your technique, but with flurocarbon line for better abrasion resistance. Have you tied any with fluro, or make them with it?
I did tie them for a while flurocarbon of the same weight about 35lb. What i liked about the fluro was the stiffness, i went with it for a while because i was fishing in crystal clear water. The reason i started making my own was because a lot of the rigs i bought where just falling apart or i was losing hooks to fish without teeth, so i bought expense rigs from leading companies and they were often no better. I found my own homemade rigs lasted for trip after trip.Recently a guy from the southern part of the uk has written to me because one of his homemade rigs has landed so many fish and of good weights that he has been showing charter boat captains how to tie them.
so what part of ireland you live i catch mackerel and stuff down in kerry cuz i go there loads every year in summer all i know is you just got another subscriber :)
Excellent videos mate. Could you give any advice on why one of the ribbons is pointing up and the other down, they don't sit side by side. And no matter what I try I cannot get them like yours. The first lot I made I put nail varnish between them to stick them together. Would they even need to be together do you think? Thanks in advance.
Hi. Yes I have tried overlapping them a little bit, half way like yours and the almost completely overlapped and cannot get it right. Just thinking....... It would maybe help a lot if the ribbon was flat, it's curved with being rolled up in roll.
One downside i now noticed after having made several of these and having fished with them. The ribbon i bought (2 different types even) are made out of 2 layers which delaminate after a while.
by the way subscribed your a genius oh and while i am here is they a special type of holographic ribbon cuz would that not get ruined in the water :) well anyway if anything anwser my first question about the line the comment above this you know bout does it have to be 35 pound or could it be 5 pound????? thanks bye :) im done
ok i bought my ribbon of ebay im fishing for mackerel/pollock/coalfish by the way your some jenius and when you uploading more mackerel videos thanks i will take your advice and also come to kerry and go to brandon pier and fenit pier also dingle peninsula / bay best ever for me thanks!
I was checked today, and unfortunately I can't find it in ASDA, TESCO or Greeting Card shops or any supermarkets. But good news, I found it in the HOBBY CRAFT only. Hobbycraft 60M Curling Holographic Silver £1.00
I usually make my own lures and use a bird repellent tape. It's very strong and as it's plastic lasts a long time. I've aught plenty of Mackerel with it.
6 years ago Wow! Time flies when you're fishing This is still my go to channel for all great fishing ideas Great Work, Well Done
i am just back from mackerel fishing in Dorset and more importantly mackerel eating, good luck and thanks

mikey4996 I am not sure, did you overlap them?

Just thinking....... It would maybe help a lot if the ribbon was flat, it's curved with being rolled up in roll.
maybe sticking some in book for while to flatten them
does this kind of lure work without live bait or should I add some sort of live bait to add scent?
works without adding bait but adding some wont hurt
One downside i now noticed after having made several of these and having fished with them. The ribbon i bought (2 different types even) are made out of 2 layers which delaminate after a while.
you now own lifetime's supply i have a coil with 500mtrs on it that I plan to hand on to my grand children as a family heirloom. Good Luck
