In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Mother’s Day 2015, Slipknot guitarists Mick Thomson and Jim Root took some time before their somewhat hometown show and hung with PG to talk about signature guitars, tube heads, and the handful off effects they need to punish arenas each night.
Mick Thomson’s Gear
GUITARS
Mick Thomson is a creature of habit-give him a few of his Ibanez MTM signature guitars packed with his Seymour Duncan EMTY Blackout pickups and he’s a happy dude. Each one of his guitars features a mahogany body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard.
As far as he’s concerned, the best guitar he has out on the road right now is his white-and-black “storm trooper” Ibanez MTM that’s kept tuned to dropped-B. According to Thomson, it’s perfect for rhythm work and can stand up against any other 6-string in his collection for leads. Nearly all of 2008’s 'All Hope is Gone' and the bulk of the rhythm material for last year’s '.5: The Gray Chapter' was done with the storm trooper. For this run, the band is primarily using two tunings and he uses a different set of D’Addario EXL117 strings for each one. For dropped-A tunings, he goes with .011-.058 and for dropped-B tunings he goes with .012-.068. Thomson recently worked with Dunlop to create a custom Jazz III pick made of a graphite composite because he feels they’re slicker, harder, and doesn’t make any scraping or scratching sounds when they wear down.
#7’s backup to the storm trooper is the very first prototype he got for his signature line back in the early 2000s.
Thomson starts the night out with this Oakland Raiders-themed Ibanez MTM that’s tuned to dropped-A for “Sacrastrophe.”
Thomson’s newest signature model features a carbon-fiber cap on the body and headstock and is tuned to dropped-A.
All of Thomson’s Audio-Technica wireless packs on his guitars are protected by Trojan condoms to keep them from getting wet from water, beer, sweat, and blood.

I feel like Mick Thomson has always been the same age
He was probably born aged ~40
Do you know how to play there songs
Stephen Delvacchio Why ask that question?
I don't know dude why should it matter
Stephen Delvacchio cause you asked him an irrelevant question
Fun fact is that when Mick is using his mask we only see his hair and eyes, but without mask we see everything except exactly the eyes and hair. Go figure.

Every guitarist: 'I like to keep it simple' *pulls out stacked pedal board*
so true.... went to a gig this summer on a festival and helped out at a friends band. the lead guitarist was like.. I just use this amp (and that really was everything he used.. guitar, cable, amp). then I came like yeah I keep it simple as well... 8 pedal board, Boss ME25 for FX, additional tuner (yes the ME25 has a build in one but I dont like it), boost pedal to boost any sounds of mine, half stack amp with modification ... "simple" or like jim would say: "simple, you know"
For me it's a lot simpler. Guitar-wireless-BOSS GT-8-amp. Occasionally I'll run a second amp for a stereo rig, but not often. Most times it's direct to the board without an amp if I can do that.
My rig goes from guitar via rack mounted wireless reciver then into a tuner followed by a 31 band eq and out to a digitec wammy pedal and dunlop wah pedal and then into the amp. Then in the amps effect loop the rest of the rack shit first into my noise gate/compressor where its split channel A is clean and returns to the amp. Channel B goes thru a metal master pedal just bolted in the bottom of the rackbox then into a BBE sonic maximizer and finally returns to the amp. All power supplied and regulated by the rack mounted juice goose. Things get complicated when you are a tone junky. Lol.
Not all Jake E Lee really does keep it simple like 6or 7 with tuner and he doesn't even use a trem bar on his Charvel
When u think about it it really is simple it really is just guitar pedals amp yea he uses a switching board but that’s t make it easier that’s not really making things complicated yea the boards stacked but it’s still just pedals then amp jim really only uses the pedals for sepific uses unlike some guys I know who own them and have them on thier boards for the sake of having them like him wih the gtod it’s there if he needs it not there for no reason the three delays all have a purpose the phaser is for the solo on before I forget it’s all there for a reason not like most modern guitar players who have a bunch and they say yea it’s off most of the time jim is the simplest rig I’ve ever come across guitar cable pedals/switching system cable amp speaker cab no fx Processors no complicated signal path
NO JIM I DON'T KNOW!!!

There was another person who was really good, I don't remember her name but she has interviewed Steve Vai
Kijiji
Rebecca Dirks. She wasn't just ridiculously pretty, but also a guitar nerd. Too bad PG let her go
They canned her!? Why would they do that
I love how Mick has such a sense of humor and the host is afraid to engage with the jokes haha
With Jim’s new pickups and Mick going with Jackson, I feel like we need a new version of this Rig Rundown. That would be awesome.
Yes!!!!
They did recently.
Yeah, that’d be awesome since they moved companies again (Mick now with ESP and Jim with Charvel) but I’d love to see what V-Man is using as well for his bass gear
Mic had me rolling with his “ribbed for my pleasure” dude is funny!
I like how they actually know about their own rig. Seems like most guitarist don't know anything about their own gear.
Yeah well Mick was teaching guitar in the mid 90s so he must know quite a lot about guitars.
Exactly!!! I feel that's why they usually get the tech to talk about so they won't embarrass themselves
Check out Andy Timmons' or Steven Stivenson's rig rundowns. You're in for a treat :)

Me neither, no clue whatsoever.
I like listening to them, though. 😂😂
Especially Mick, big dude's very chill with that awesome deep voice.
K.J.B. Damn I feel bad for y’all. It feels more relaxing when you know everything
Mick Thomson seems like a real-ass dude. He's fucking funny too. I'd love to have a beer and just shoot the suit with the guy.
or shoot the shit, even.
SrDeMaFp Basically I would agree but why wear sunglasses in the night? That's kinda douch-ey to me.
SomethinWild a lot of people who are a bit shy feel more comfortable if they can wear shades. And before you say "this guy goes on stage every night infront of loads of cameras and people" remember that that is a very different scenario. Not to mention while wearing a mask. Compared to being interviewed alone with a camera up in your face. For a lot of people shades help in those situations as a kind of "wall" infront of you and the camera / people.
And he got stabbed... In the head.
He'd be a hell of a partner in a bar fight. Got stabbed in the fucking head and he's just like "I'm good, bro."
So when will Mick get some signature "SEVEN" condoms for his transmitters? 😂
Sebba they could tie in something from Friends 😂
I'm gonna need a SIX 😂
Mick Thomson signature Jimmy Hats: “You’ll find your urge to kill dwindles after a good NUT.”
I love how when Mick started playing with his hands the interviewer took a step back lmfao
Imagine being a young kid and Jim being your grandfather... wooot.

I know right. Sometimes, I question my sexuality when I see him.

Jim is just the coolest guy in music. totally honest and someone you would like to grab a beer with.
I'm not even much of a slipknot fan but I like listening to Jim talk. Comes across very honest with a good sense of humor. "Ya know?"
“If you ever break a string, which hardly ever happens- of course I’m gonna do it tonight”
String: damn right.
I just love how thorough Mick and Jim are about their gear, the tone on Gray Chapter is easily one of the best I've ever heard.
Sovereign King yes!!!!
I like how they're not "too good" or "too rockstar" to talk to the interviewer about their own gear. Some other big bands have their guitar techs fill in for them during these
I love how Jim rambles and everything just rolls into one long word with the occasional "Y'Know" to break it up 😂 i couldliterally listen to him all day
Same)) I have no idea what he is talking about but it sounds good
They should do another rig run down with Slipknot this time with Micks new Jackson guitars and with their new bassist V-Man.
Don't think enough people care about the new bassplayer compared to Mick and Jim :s
BeardedDanishViking I saw a vid on his bass, it's pretty interesting but I think he needs to prove himself first before we get to cosy.
Well, he is a proven bassist as the title would stand on its own. So I can def respect his choices in gear and the kind of tone he goes for. Though I agree, as the Slipknot bassist, he has to continue to deliver to keep his spot.

Mick and Jim are very nice dudes, they are very knowledgeable about their gear and tone, kudos to musicians&rockstars who don't rely on the guitartech every second to explain what's going on!
