A week-long bikepacking trip to the Normandy beaches || St Malo to Caen

- This June I headed to Normandy on the ferry from Portsmouth, for a linear cycle tour from St Malo to Caen alongside the Normandy beaches during D-Day week. This route is mostly the Eurovelo 4 - La Vélomaritime - and vast swathes of it is traffic-free cycle paths. Way flatter than my usual cycle touring ground of Brittany (or Devon), this route was an absolute blast.

Did the beaches on Ribble last year great memories and it’s amazing place people and scale of the beaches the troops landed on 👍🚴♂️
Great trip! I cycled around Normandy this summer and had a lovely time.
It's such a beautiful place!
Great video, thanks for creating and sharing it. I definitely go some good route ideas from it. Continued safe cycling in you future adventures.
Enjoyed your video. Looked like a fantasic trip. The French countryside and the old towns are something else. Love my motorbike touring but I like the slower pace of the bicycle so tempted to do something similar. Keep the great vids coming.............
You've forgotten to paint the front door?🤣 - You should do Cherbourg/Caen, shorter and cheaper crossing, with all the best Normandy beaches along the way.
Haha sshhhhhh! Yeah I did consider that but it wasn't quite enough distance without adding on random detours. Maybe Cherbourg-Le Harve would be great too.
Kitiara, you are a real inspiration I would love to try a tour like this, great routes and beautiful places, great video and a well planned trip!
Very entertaining video thanks very much 🚴🏽♀️🚴♂️🎉👍
Great video. thanks for posting. Youve given me more confidence to do a similar trip. Ive just started my cycle tour journey. I love the pillow idea, I'll certainly be copying that!!
So glad you like it and are inspired! It's so much fun and really as easy or hard as you make it. The pillow works really well 😁
Looks beautiful! I must plan a cycle tour in France. I've heard the Loire à Vélo is a great route.
Yes, it is !
It was so beautiful! I've heard fantastic things about the Loire Valley, I definitely want to head there as well.
Excellent video, had the opportunity to go and visit Normandy during the D-Day week too for 2024 (80th anni.) and whilst out in Ouistreham saw the cycle route and it sparked a little dream in my head which is going to be a reality this year. Myself and a good friend will be cycling East to West in May. Did you find navigation to be straightforward with signage or did you rely on navigation devices ? Thanks for sharing!
A bit of both really, the signage is pretty good but small icons, so occasionally I'd miss one and check my navigation app (komoot), which was always running in the background. And then there were sections I made my own route off the eurovelo so relied on komoot, as well as to get to campsites etc. Have a wicked trip!
Hi , great video. I’m wondering is there somewhere to lock your bicycles up at mont saint michel? I’m staying at that cousins campsite for a couple of nights that you used but I want to cycle for a day trip to the mount . Do you remember ? Thanks in advance :)
Hi! Yes there is, it's really obvious too. You'll cycle towards the island along a cycle path and before it turns into the long bridge, you'll find bicycle parking, it's clearly signposted but also just obvious as you have to pass it. Lock your bikes there then walk along the bridge to Mont St Michel itself. Enjoy your trip!
@@kitpascoe ahhh thank you so much :)
Done the same route a few years ago. i agree getting into Avranches is a pig...
Epic
Hello Ms Pascoe, While I swore 40 yrs ago I'd never go back to France (after backpacking through as a kid), I think I've come 'round and am ready to do a cycle tour there. I like the look of your route, and because we'd be coming from Oz, we'd want to go a bit further and a bit longer, maybe finishing with some riding in England to fly back out of London? My wife isn't keen on tent camping, but those little huts I saw in this, and a previous video, look like a great compromise. How common are they, and if we each carried a sleep sack and one big fitted sheet, do you think that'd work? We'd also be ready to splurge on hotels as that's how we've always toured anyway. The memorial at Omaha holds special meaning for me as Dad served as a pilot in WWII and was lucky to survive it, so that's something I've always wanted to see. Great video, and thanks for all the hard work!
You definitely should! The memorials are very impactful, so with your history I think you'd really get a lot out of it. The huts are much more common in Brittany but there are a good few in Normandy and I assume they're increasing in number. There's a map on this website about their locations: www.lacabanerie.fr/ just scroll down and you'll see it. Thanks for watching!
What map is that at 15:20 ?
Thanks!
HI IHAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND GOOD CYCLE MAP OF NOEMANDY CANYOU PLEASE TELL ME WARE YOU GOT THAT MAP YOU USED
Hi, it's an app called komoot. You can use it in your web browser on your computer (best experience for planning your route) and then use the komoot app on your mobile for actually navigating. By the way, I also work for them in a role unrelated to this channel!
@@kitpascoe THANK YOU
Oh no the sun. 😓 I bet if the soldiers at D-day had thought about that they would have called time out until everyone applied sunscreen.
