    Please do more videos on composition. Like how to apply the guidelines to an actual painting layout. I feel I am really weak in composing my paintings. Thanks and great video! More please

    I'm trying to learn about composition. My sister and niece take photos a lot. My thought is, if sister photographs an old door closeup, her pic is totally different if her daughter takes pic of same door on an angle and flowers could be there. Another would have a different viewpoint, and that's what makes art amazing and creative.

    Also, if you haven't done one of these on storing wet paintings... that'd be good.

    I tried working on canvas and couldn't. I am a sculptor for 40 years and 3-D work is easy for me. I have rarely ever met a 2 D worker who also work in 3 D and visa versa.

    Paused at 4:37 to write this comment because I as hard as I'm trying to follow along, the "rule of 3rds" is actively pulling my eye to your extremely shiny bracelet. In spite of this, I gave it a pre-like. Don't disappoint me, best dad ever.
    Ok. Continue.

    Mike was talking about triangles and I noticed that the table in front of him makes a triangle. As the two sides recede it's like they point at Mike's head. I don't know if that was intentional but I just had to laugh at that. The drawing of the shell demonstrating the golden mean reminds me of fractals. Each segment looks like a larger or smaller version of all the other segments. I love fractals.

    In my humble opinion, we are exposed to compositional elements everywhere we look, but rarely stop to analyze them. I think most painters, drawers, etc. follow them intuitively, i.e., instinctively, with subconscious memories of prior compositional framing already lodged in their minds through movies, art, television, and even advertisements. Learning what the actual theories are can be useful in understanding what the principles are, but it can be challenging to integrate them fully without stopping to intellectualize, which is something I rarely do when wrapped up in the whirlwind of creating a work. Maybe I should intellectualize a little more.

    Rule-breaking that in this video on composition the table edge is not straight in the frame.

  • @doublequilI

    Heh, I fight the word "rules" in art as well. There are a lot of techniques and methods for art, but art has no rules.

    uhhuh.. I think this was your worst video to date! 😂
    Personally i think doing a bunch of thumbnails (tiny sketches) to figure out your composition is the best advice i have ever heard. You can test out your composition by drawing something under a minute. If it works on the small scale, it will likely work in a bigger scale. Also as drawing thumbnails take so little time, with spending only little effort you can try different compositions. You could fill a page or five with thumbnails and choose the best to base your final art from. Also doing lots of thumbnails will slowly give you sense of good composition.
    Another thing is to think about contrast. Not just contrast of lights and darks. But also contrast of colors, saturation, textures, detail and so on. Of course not all pictures need to have all the types of contrast.

    • @JerrysArtarama
      @JerrysArtarama  6 років тому

      I can definitely appreciate where you are coming from. Thumbnail sketches are a great way to lay out a piece before hand. Also, contrast is another thing to consider. For me, I am just going over the basic theories of what they say makes for a good composition.

    I usually end up eyeballing it but since I'm aware of the thirds and ratio methods, my art often combines them. If anyone wants to have a look, the originals are at lindaursin.net and I have prints of more on redbubble
