You are so joyful and relaxed. Thanks for posting the list of your short stories: it will be a pleasure to read them all together. Reading slumps are strange. The remedy is good company, fresh air, music, films, the plastic arts & a good night's sleep. Easy when you are old !
After Sappho sounds like a bop. I remember either you or someone else talking about Big Swiss and describing it as having "the romantic rhythm of a chainsaw".
Shae you do a good job with introducing me to new fiction but can I just say I never really liked or understood poetry until I started reading your picks. I mean, I still don't understand a lot of what Franny Choi writes but the way the last two years have just been the images from her poetry stuck in my head is like some sort of black magic or hypnosis. Thank you a thousand times for all your poetry picks!!!
ughhh... now i have even more books i have to read. where am i supposed to find the time for that!?!? I'm currently reading Kim Joyoung by Chon Nam-Joo (in English). And technically also Ottto by Dana von Suffrin (in German), but i'm having trouble getting through it.
im never going to get through my tbr at this rate lol but two of these sound like they might be similar to one of my percolating ideas so i might have to bump them higher in the queue after sappho sounds like a good time too
@@ShaelinWrites ooh, okay. These are all just gonna be my taste in shows btw. I recently started watching Six Feet Under and I’m really loving it. The final season of Barry is airing (although the gay stuff only really comes in in season 2/3). The Wire is fantastic and has a few gay characters in the ensemble. Severance from last year was great. And finally, straight people can pry Succession from my cold dead hands
Excellent cat cameo and presentation! I'm a little confused by the x/5 "scores", feels a bit like an incidental (and possibly pointless?) abstraction of your actually interesting thoughts and discussion of each title. Is it just an algorithm thing or are there actual semantics behind them?
The star ratings as pretty arbitrary, ultimately, but since I rate books on goodreads and it asks for a star rating, I add them here too. I keep them because people have said they like having them on screen, but they are a bit meaningless all things considered
Making them one-dimensional token characters I guess. Do not make them being [insert label] their whole identity and just focus on making them interesting compelling characters first, especially if it's a story not heavily focused on LGBTQ issues specifically
Plenty work exists to occupy ones time than with malaligned gay themed literatures. OPINION: inherent messages within genre isn't worth indoctrinating.
As a gay man, I've never read lesbian books before but because of Shaelin, I started reading a lot of wlw books and I can't get enough! Gonna read Big Swiss soon!
Sorry, shaelin. You are choosing your audience and you are losing me. Wish we could keep sexuality out of writing conversation. Most of us, straight and gay, accept differences but are SoTired of hearing about it when we really just want writing advice and wisdom. I'll look elsewhere.
also lmao I can guarantee you that no gay people are mad that i'm recommending gay books, but good job trying to disguise your homophobia by framing it as a normal thing

I misread the title as “I’m gay” and I was like we know girl

You had me at “…in a Moshfeghian way.”
I feel like, somehow, I write more gay fiction than I read (or at least fiction with queer characters in it). I should probably sort that out lol
Putting Scorched Grace on my TBR immediately! I'm in a mystery kick right now, such good timing.

Totally agree with everything you said about Brutes- I was so excited for it!! but came away feeling slightly confused and blah
I've never heard about any of these nooks, adding them to my TBR immediately.

"Scorched Grace" was published by The Gillian Flynn imprint and handpicked by Flynn herself!
I just read "Last Night at the Telegraph Club" by Melinda Lo. 1950s in Chinatown, San Francisco. It's a good wlw book and well worth the read :)

I'd read After Sappho since I am a fan of Sappho anyway!😊 Too bad her work is mostly just fragments.
Please read The Atlas Six!!!!!
I have a legit question for everyone: if you are writing a lbgtq character, what is a bad way to represent them?
Making them one-dimensional token characters I guess. Do not make them being [insert label] their whole identity and just focus on making them interesting compelling characters first, especially if it's a story not heavily focused on LGBTQ issues specifically
Gay reading era? Say less 😌
