- This CHIPPY is Making FISH & CHIPS an AFFORDABLE MEAL Again - SOLID PROOF we are being RIPPED OFF! Fish and Chips used to be an affordable meal, we even use the term "Cheap as Chips" however these days Fish and Chips have rocketed in price and are no longer a meal that a family can afford, but this chippy in Nottingham is going against the cost of living crisis and making Fish and Chips an affordable meal again and what's better it's a local family business. Fish, Chips and Peas for £4.50 this could be the cheapest Fish and Chips in the UK. An unbeatable Meal Deal? Cod Fish and Chips also provide some amazing Doner Kebabs.

That dude in the background at the start of the video just done the most awful moonwalk. Michael Jackson will be spinning in his grave.😊
I didn't even listen to anything in the intro, was totally infatuated with that bloke.
I thought he was a potential flasher 😯😉
But does the average punter get the same amount of chips and same size fish. 🤔
That looked great, nice piece of fish, good chips, mushy peas looked fine, the price was great! |Gets my vote! 10/10 what a great placed good meal, great price!
Hey Lee, trust you to start eating fish before cutting it open and leaving it to cool down for a few mins lol
Did looks nice though and great it is family owned as well 👍
Not impressed with that guy behind you (0.26) attempting a very limp Michael Jackson Moon Walk... Shamone!
Hey your comments before Christmas about EVs EXPLODED about how useless they are , cars parked up for ages to get charged up . foooooked up their Christmas eh
Had to google it Lee it says the very first recorded Fish &Chip shop was opened by a Jewish immigrant in east London in 1860 and for £4.50 that meal has to be a 10/10
The guy at your back looked very dodgy. I think he was eyeing up your equipment, honk honk. Oh Matron...
Excellent , someone offering a smaller fish and reducing the price accordingly unlike many that have reduced the portion but still charging the highest price they can get away with.
People like this are to be applauded and I wish them well 👍
That would be 12 euros where I live. And they can't make decent fish and chips.
That looked very good. The fish was white and flaky, the chips looked golden and were plentiful. Yummy. I quite liked the mushies on the chips. When I was a kid we could get chips and peas for 6d. It was called a sixpenny mix and asked for scraps on the top. True health food!
That was spot on Lee £4.50.. wow… I remember years ago walking down the street eating fish n chips out of newspaper memories 👍👍
Ah! You’re back from spain? I shall begin to watch the channel, again. F&C,,,that’s what we want. Not that Islas Canerias tripe! Lol
That didn't look too bad to me, and there's enough there to fill you. This is the kind of value for money food we need in these difficult times. I'm giving 10/10. 👍
How funny, I use that phrase so much"cheap as chips" shortly followed by. "Well not anymore".
Thanks for another great video.
Do you fancy doing a review on Burger Boi's.. They look amazing, bit expensive but wanted your thought's?
Many thanks again Elaine
Hey Lee. The hubby and I love the channel. We'd love to see a challenge of budget meals for a week or so. Maybe main courses for £8 or something, for those who want to eat out but can't afford more. We understand that cheap doesn't always mean quality, but it might be good to see what you can get. Just a thought. Keep up the good work!
You got to try Ron,s fish an chips at Norwich market this may be cheaper M8 e
Love the council coat doing the "Donkey Duffle, Truffle Shuffle" in the middle distance!. Much love from Wudhus x
Based on my own experiences never had decent fish from a place that sells donner kebab I don’t know why just personal opinion
£4.50 is a fair price. Fish and chips were classed as so essential in the second world war that they were not rationed. You just needed to have the means to afford them. British Institution.
Fish is pollock . Probably 3rd of price of wholesale cod . However if it tastes nice . 👌
What sort of " Fish " was it? A Goldfish? A Perch ? A Carp? A Gudgeon? A Roach? A Bream?.....i could go on and on. All of the fish mentioned would be a fraction of the price of Cod or Haddock. You get what you pay for, if you are not bothered then fine. The guy not wanting to be filmed summed it all up for me, I wonder why?! LOL
I’d say 10/10 looked delicious for the price. I like the mushy peas on top of the chips same with curry sauce, chilli or gravy always nicer on top of the chips. As for Pepsi I prefer the original non-diet version with real sugar. I’m old school lol.
Bet it’s not cod or haddock
When chippies advertise fish and chips it can be any variety of fish, probably basa,
Noted just said fish on the menu, was it pollock?
That's great value for that. Looked lovely and fresh too. 🥰🌞🥰Xxx
It looks like Whiting meat even still Whiting is tasty but defo worth 4.50
Although i haven't been for several months now Lee (Due to Health Issues)... My local Fish & Chip Shop has Lunchtime Special Offers... They charge just £4.40 for a... Small Cod Fish... Small Chips... With either a Small Sausage... Or a Fish & Potato Rissole/Fishcake... And they also come with a choice of either... Mushy Peas... Curry Sauce... Baked Beans... Or Gravy... And although they were classed as small... The Lunchtime Special i had was a decent size for the price i paid... I was actually stuffed the last time i had one of their Lunchtime Specials... I think a lot of Fish & Chip Shops these days will still have their own smaller Lunchtime Special versions... You can't really go wrong for the price you paid Lee... I bet it helped fill a little hole pal... I'll score it a healthy 8.5/10... 👍 Cheers mate. 🍺
Im retired so £4 is all i pay anyway!!!! who was the overweight guy walking backwards . Was he a comedy turn.... stooge?
can get fish chips and peas for £3.80 and i think it;s like £1 for a can of pop
love the cheap chippys
£3.80 ?....costs that for the chips alone here the fish is about a grand I think
@@jshaw4757 it's a little shitty town and for that price it's good food
A lot of places don’t need to up their prices but using inflation to charge more for food that costs the same to make specially the big chains
Great value for money, and it beats Whitby fish and chips.
Our local Chippy, Boulevard Fisheries, offers hake which is at least 3 x the size of your fish and small chips - which is the understatement of the century - as there's enough for 4 helpings ...all for £4.5 ...no peas or curry sauce though... 🤔, their fish is served in a large pizza box ...to provide one with the scale (no pun intended) of the size of the fish.
Not sure how they make a profit selling them at that cost
They make a small profit most chippys rip people off and make huge profits
Too much money now and they’ve got worse as the price has gone up
Nope! Never peas on chips 🤮
I would definitely want my peas separately from the chips. Fish looked great. In fact, looked like excellent value.
Bag of chips was 1.50 back in my day. I am 45 though 😂
family chips was like £2.50 and that was a big bag that was like 11 year ago
I remember a portion of chips 45p in 1989 and 60p in 1992-1995.
McDonald’s meals are around £6 +. So value, filling wise it’s a winner
Another quality vlog keeping me going, as I'm on night duty at the asylum, last one so I can have a good drink Friday.
They really are as cheap as chips, might have to seek it out next time I'm in Notts, enjoy Benidorm in the morning it will be a blast, if you need anything drop me a line,
100 percent mark up on the can of soft drink. That's where they are making the money to subsidise the meals.
Like you I liked the peas on chips ! £4.50 ? Beat a path to the door and get in there that meal in Essex would be £12.50
It's a 10 all day for me on the cost alone #the price is right
Ain’t all mini fish and chips around that price?
I think fish and chips stems from Jewish cuisine.
that looked lush just the right size 4 me and price
Thats definitely good value. I was expecting it to look disgusting and for you to say it tasted awful. Got to love small family run business
Looks good Lee , that would be more enough for me, think our chippy 🤔 in the village, for the same £7 : pounds , 🙃🍷
Pepsi Max all day.Pepsi light or diet coke or coke zero i like piss water. £4.50 a great price we will have to have a day out and give it a try.
Ok u said it towards the end but I was thinking it at the beginning- FISH NOT DONE ENOUGH!! & where is your slice of lemon 🍋???? But as u say for 4.50£ what do u want???! Otherwise everything looked good- A Very Solid Mark of 9.1- only because of no lemon & peas not on the side….Cheers, 😎👍🇨🇦 That’s very solid value, don’t even try looking for that here even when u put in your exchange!
On my next visit I will be asking for the £4.50 MacMaster portion, but no fizzy drink.
How have you never been to Oldham ? Oldham is where the first chip shop opened
The cheapest fish and chips in ‘the’ world!
Just been about an hour ago about 9pm. So very clean, brilliant staff and the food was awesome. You were right, awesome place, x
Awesome. 😊🕶️ Have a great weekend.
bang on, dandelion n burdock wi mine tho.
Ten pound for s fish and rhe u have to buy chips separately where i am sth london
The 3 crowns pub which is across from the tram stop at theatre royal do 2 meals for £9.50 Monday-friday and 1 consists of fish and chips...go audit it and see what you think....2 for £9.50!!!
Not the biggest portion (oo-er missus!) but wasn't tiny, and looked really good value for £4.50.
Also, loved the guy behind you at the start of the video almost moonwalking backwards. 🤣
Lol. 😂 What was he doing.
@Mj , Narf Narf lol
We love our Friday Night Feasts from Jacks Chippy Radcliffe. It’s the best food and only £14.95 for 2 fish, 2 family chips, 2 pies or sausage and unlimited sides. No compromise on quality either.
Our Chippy does a piece of fish with chips and a bun for well it used to be £4.50 but is now £5.10 but the fish is double the size of that but you get mushy peas with yours. I'm in the North East not too far from you really. Keep safe friend.
Went to Wetherby Whaler at WAKEFIELD today, great Hadddock fillet, fabulous batter, nice chips, fabulous mushy peas , yorkshire tea bread and proper butter , ate inside in the restaurant, good service and all for £15.00 It was fantastic !
I saw that KFC across the road, maybe why the fish and chips was £4.50 it's 9.5 from me.I don't drink cold after I like tea, Yorkshire TEA, where is the Blonde Angel.....
8/10 for me - excellent price, my only criticism would be that the batter is slightly pale. I've found the perfect song for you - 'Fish & Chips by Lieutenant Pigeon - ua-cam.com/video/T_X_DaLumAE/v-deo.html
Hey Lee! If you watched Beard meets food do that Chippy challenge 2 minutes down the road from my house before Christmas with his sister. That was £15 for that challenge, A huge whale of a fish, great big pile of chips, 4 sides, bread and butter plus two cans of dandelion and burdock. Enough for 4 people. Can pay that much these days for one person in some places. Yours looked okay. The batter reminds me of pea fritters. My preference would be curry sauce rather than mushy peas. Great price for city centre. Safe travels to Benidorm ✈️ Take care 😘👍🏻
This is the issue as well (and I’m not having a go at the Mac here)
If he is reviewing the shop etc,he’s ALWAYS going to get bigger portions lol. It is what it is..
I'd never met the guy before. He hadn't a clue who I was. :0)
@@TheMacMaster I get that mate. But cmon lol you get bigger portions! Perks of the job 👍☺️
wow £4.50, cant complain at that tbh, looked ok as well, would be happy to pay that.
i used to get kids fish and chips for 90p in london years ago, funny how times change
The majority of people, children, elderly and me, don't want a big portion as it usually gets thrown away. Should it not be large enough, buy two portions, its still cheaper than most! I deliberately avoid my chip shop as I ask for a small portion, but still end up feeding 1/2 of it to the sea gulls! Small cod and chips, mushy peas is £10, large cod and chips, mushy peas is £12.10 !
Very impressed that the batter was crunchy and not greasy, looked like care had been taken with the produce, decent thickness of fish. 4.50£ is a steal. 7/10 quality wise, 11/10 value wise.
Still need to try the fish and chips from the palace restaurant 😂
Not been there since the revamp. Looks good tbf. Can’t go wrong at £4.50! Happy new year to you and your family Lee. Looking forward to the vids in 2023!!
Oh Jersey! Mr bergemac you are the superslouth of finding the most rubbish anywhere, including whitby. Get yourself to Jersey, you are bergemac .xx
I saw a post on facebook where their father still had his 1975 sign from his chip shop. Fish,... was 21p! - average uk wage has gone up 8 fold since then (£4k per year to £32k per year) - this should therefore mean that when you got to the chippy for a takeaway - piece of fish should therefore be £1.68!!!
that looks really nice indeed,... twice the size of fish I got at Mr. May's place!! - and at £14 less,.. this really is a bargain!
In 2019 I had fish and chips for £3 in Blackpool. They probably don't have it for that price anywhere now though.
Bangin' for the money. Shame Matt at Food Review Club just paid a whopping £13.70 for similar with curry sauce.
Before this family took over that Chipper, you'd probably have got the afternoon chips in the evening so rubber tasting sometimes yesterday chips. But this chippy is Great now & good food always.. 👌👍
The name of the shop states Cod fish and Chips, so the fish must be cod. Looks good, batter is clean , but the chips look a bit anemic. I am very concern re the fish and what it is? My chippy out lined to me the cost of Fish since we are not buying from Russia, and the Norwegians have hiked the price, she the owner states, be very aware, a little know fish being passed as Cod, ie Pollock, small cut .I don’t think you can run a F&C business with only one fish, and seeing your North of Watford I expected Cod and Haddock .
A few decades ago, students and young workers were able to afford fish & chips for their lunch. Now they are having chips only. Nine pounds lunch is not something a student can afford everyday. As the cod and haddock catch increase thanks to Brexit driving away French and other European trawlers, 4.50 pounds should hopefully be the normal price for this national dish.
I pay £6.80 for Medium Cod and chips (No Pease) and looking at the size of your small fish I thought it was not much smaller. I thought on looks and price I would have given 10/10. My only criticism is its too far to drive from Hertfordshire.😁😁👍👍🤣🤣
It's insane how much fish costs in the UK. Its an island surrounded by billions of fish! Why is it priced like some kind of rare commodity?
@@ellistolchard4400 yes but that price is rare as f. Fish and chips costs about a tenner in most places. So thanks for the pointless reply.
My chippy do a light bite fish and chips with either a tub of mushy peas or curry sauce for £4.99. It's very nice and ample amount for me.
MAC you’ve done well getting fish & chips for £4-50. 👏👏 average around here is £7-00 for a small, £9-50 for a normal. They looked delish😘
Potatoes in the Supermarkets have not gone up, Aldi this week had white potatoes on offer at 59p for 2 kg. I'm still paying about the same for frozen Cod or Haddock, most fish shops use frozen by the way, so why the big increase in most take away fish shops. It could be the government gave a holiday on VAT and then a reduction and the shops got used to the extra profits and wanted to maintain this when VAT was brought back at the 20% rate so increased their prices over and above inflation. Also the rate of inflation at 10/11% seems to have sent a signal to many businesses to increase prices even if not justified. In the 1970s there was a prices and income policy for increases having to be justified by law thus stopping profiteering and wage inflation.
On a Tuesday ( only in jan) at Sheffield greyhound stadium there do free entry chicken strips and chips + drink for ZERO - NOTHING now beat that Lee and that would make a interesting blog too
God video, most enjoyable and without question a bargain at that price. Question is ,, what were you eating ? what kind of fish did they serve ? ,,, I noticed on their menu board they didn't specify what type of fish they were selling.
£8.90 locally to me in Leeds. Regular chips on there own are around £2.25
Peas all over the chips wasn't a good look. The sort of thing that Danny on RateMyTakeaway loves, though, calling them "dirty fries". But, no, serve them up in a plastic pot on the side.
That's a fair Portion of Fish & Chips for £4.50 & the shop looked really nice as you sometimes wonder when you hear about food that cheap I bet the place is a dump. Great Vlog as always Lee & I feel quite hungry now. Onwards
The average price for a fish and chip supper in fife is about £6 don't know how a Nottingham chippy can be profitable at £4.50 ?
Me and the Mrs go there we have the burger meal...always fresh and fresh salad and loads of chips...it's a good place...plus you can sit outside as well....proper value for money..
He cannot be making hardly anything on that deal in these current times Lee. Wholesale fish has shot up in price, not to mention other ingredients. Then you got the utilities, gas, elec and water rates, staff costs, waste collection, taxes etc. Plus you wanted a seperate carton for the peas 😂. It all adds up. I almost feel sorry for the guy. Long hours, hard work. Very little compensation for the effort put in. Put the price up mate, we all should be allowed to make a living. Or maybe a third less chips. Good luck with it anyway👍
MUST ADMIT the cost of oil , fish and energy bills has gone up. JUST think some of the prices they charge for a portion of chips is taking the P
EE BY GUM I remember when you could get fish n chips pint a beer and still have change out of a threpny bit, oh and taxi home 😂.
Was expecting it to be skin on, being in the midlands. Interestingly yesterday I had skin on haddock in Whitby yesterday. Quite big for a mini portion, well worth the money.
One of my friends had a chip shop until recently. He had to sell the business because it just wasn’t sustainable anymore. I can assure you that it’s not just a case of ‘ripping people off’, and he would have done anything he could to offer his customers a good deal but it just became unrealistic as he knew he would have to hike the prices to give himself a decent quality of life and pay his staff.
There’s this expectation that the customers should retain pretty much the same prices and that the owners - who, themselves have families to support - should somehow just absorb these costs. No one is applying these principles to wages, with strikes occurring all over the place as the cost of living goes up, but there seems to be some assumption that fish and chips should be as cheap as ever, even though the prices of the raw ingredients and business energy costs are skyrocketing.
I’m not in favour of rip off prices but we also need to be mindful of the business costs. Some chip shops might have cheaper suppliers that allow them to keep costs down but it is not true of everyone.
Well done to this chip shop but I think they should be treated as the exception rather than the rule
Wow for that price can't go wrong
first impresssions are , it looked a bit light, maybe a bit longer cooking?
The fish n chips look nice Lee and you should know you have had one or two fish n chip meals!!!!😋 Great value i must agree 9/10 Methinks😎👌
The fish and chip shop in Woodlesford in Leeds are excellent and I consider them to be cheap and excellent quality it's also important they make their own chips and don't buy them in blanched
Looks a good deal for sure, not everyone wants a huge portion, that looks like a decent portion for the price. Have to give that a 1 9going off how you enjoyed it Lee rounded up from your 8.9
for the money 10/10
