Should be a brilliant video. Actual film versus a film that’s been digitised, at James Cameron’s behest, to the point of removing all its filmic quality.
Glad you liked it. It's certainly original even if there are elements of Lake Mungo and even Cannibal Holocaust. Thankfully no one's eaten though! John.
@@MrBrax I thought it was funny too. As for being bad on purpose, I suppose you mean that it was successful on a satirical level. That's the way I took it. One caveat, though, was its dead serious take on the suspected evil activity regarding The Bohemian Grove.
I’ve just watched “The Holdovers” on 4K and it has a wonderful 70’s, slightly washed out, retro feel, presented in 1.66:1. It’s also my favourite film of the year to date. It’s got a really interesting treat at the beginning for the UK version also. Kind regards, Dave
@@moviecollector5920If you like the early work of the late Hal Ashby, you’ll love it. It’s like he made a film in the early Seventies that has only just been released. It really feels like it’s from 1974. Great performances from the core cast too.
Morning Dmitri. Aliens should be a lot of fun providing Simon and I can get together. It might take a while. I have already shot some video of one of my Super 8 prints running though so whatever happens, I'll do something. I only ever saw Exorcist III the once when originally released and I well remember it being an edge of the seat suspenseful shocker. I'm rather looking forward to seeing it again. Hope all is well over in the land of Colorado. John.
Great update John. I also received the 4k of Late Night With The Devil. I'm saving it for when I get a projector and screen set up :). Keep up the great work. 😊👍
I expect Late Night With The Devil will work very well on a telly so don't try to resist holding on for too long. It's got an intentionally muted look owing to the 1977 television show nature of it. John.
Hi John. I’m planning a trip to London at the end of the month and I’d like to purchase 4ks over there since physical media is hard to come by where I’m from. Do you have any store recommendations in Londoni could visit? As always, thank you for your wonderful videos!
Two in the West End of London. First is FOPP just along from Piccadilly Circus and the second is the original HMV store from 103 years ago on Oxford Street. I've done videos of both of these stores so look them up and let me know if you can't find them. HMV was in February this year I think and FOPP was February 2022, I think. John.
Look forward to the twisters review... I've been waiting to buy, but I've been waiting for your review. I love Sam Rockwell but I have never seen the moon movie in one sitting. Every time I've tried to watch it or I've entered a room with it on it just doesn't draw me in for some reason. Have you seen "The way way back"? It's not on 4k but it's a good watch (IMO).
The Way Back is a Peter Weir film so yes, I've seen it. Anyone who can make a film as good as Master & Commander is going to pique my attention whenever I see he's done another film. And I think it's a very good film. Different to anything else perhaps. Good luck with watching MOON fully one day. It needs a big screen in a dark room I think. Actually, that's the same for all films so ignore me there! John.
Wow! What a joy to watch this video! Cannot wait for your take on Aliens 4k uhd vs the 35 mm print!! By the way, look no further than LONGLEGS if you are in need of a spooky horror film. Comes highly recommended. Thanks again.
I think the stupid name 'Longlegs' has put me off even taking a look at what that one is about so far Bob. I'm working on the T2 35mm video currently. Hope to get back onto it later today to hopefully get it uploaded on Tuesday evening. John.
I got the 4k UHD "Annie" (1982) and it was amazing, almost as good as true technicolor. I got it used off ebay. Somebody out there must of let it go from the "Columbia Classic Collection Vol.3". I'll be keeping it forever I think.
The colour reproduction capability of the 4K disc format is probably its best feature of all. I haven't looked at The Ten Commandments 4K on our newer video projector but on our older one the Technicolor reproduction looked about as good as the best Technicolor print it would be possible to see. If Annie is similar, I understand exactly what you're saying. John.
Oooohhh, Aliens best sequel ever? I'll have to raise you an Empire Strikes Back and a T2. And as you mentioned T2 at the end I'm looking forward to that video, I remember watching it on opening day, exceptional 35mm print back in the day and a cracking sound mix.
I saw a 70mm blow-up of T2 but I have seen the 35mm that was used for the Super 8 prints a couple of times and that's excellent too. The Empire Strikes Back is a lot of fun but remember how comparatively poorly it was received in 1980. The climax at the beginning and then no ending meaning we'd have to wait another three years for a conclusion. It had a lot going against it including Fozzie Bear as the Jedi Master. All this seems to have been forgotten now but I watched it on Super 8 about six weeks ago and the flaws are still there. T2 is brilliant, but it's clearly the sequel to the superior film. Same with Empire I suppose. It doesn't matter what I think. All that matters is what you think and you enjoy. John.
@moviecollector5920 the good news is that all these original movies and their immediate sequels were so good, Empire has got flaws but it's pro's win out on the whole. If we compare these movies with most of today's releases then we forget how good cinema used to be. Sadly modern films in general lack that special something. I don't know if it's modern scripts, editing, equipment but something's missing. As for Terminator I love the original as the story and filmmaking technique was way ahead of it's time (literally), T2 was a visual and audio treat which has seldom been matched. Two great movies.
I’ve only just discovered your channel and I’ve found it both informative and entertaining and you’ve helped to rekindle my interest in film. I hope you will defy the pirates and carry on. I’ve booked to see Interstellar in 70mm at the BFI Imax because of your coverage so thanks.
Morning Mark. Sorry for the delay in replying but I was a little preoccupied with the 35mm screening of Terminator 2: Judgment Day yesterday which was terrific fun. You should have an absolutely wonderful time watching Interstellar at the BFI IMAX. I have twice found it to be the most exhilarating, out of this world cinema experience I've ever had. It doesn't matter where you sit but it is easiest to take in the full magnificence of the artistry from right at the back. Sitting right down at the far right front filled my senses and was quite overwhelming at times but for any film to achieve that, it's got to be something special. Have a great time. John.
@@moviecollector5920 John, Thanks for taking the time to reply. Luckily I’m in row P so I should get a near optimum experience. I’m really looking forward to it.
@@Grampus854 Remember to listen for the distant drumming of the projector during the quiet scenes. That will remind you of cinema as it was and as it should still often be today. John.
I am looking forward to your review of Terminator 2. Today i was driving my Car in the autumn sun Hearing the Terminator 1 Score of Brad Fiedel. I was looking for an endless road.......
That theme is brilliant. I've put a lot of the T2 video together this afternoon. It was a bit of a late night yesterday so it took me a while to get going. I hope to get it done and up on Tuesday evening. It's looking pretty good so far. John.
Goooooood choice with Legion! THAT well earned scare scene with the tension and sudden music/sound burst is exceptional. You probs know this but there are at 2 different versions (at least), one with the added last minute exorcist priest and one without - Its quite noticeable the added stuff and I don't think Blatty wanted it, but studio is king. There is also the alternate ending that finally surfaced on UA-cam, its rough quality and a poor anticlimactic end. Still interesting to see as for years it was just a rumour. p.s. Sam Jackson is in it, one of his early movies, he's dubbed over though. Moon, another excellent choice. Quite a sad film I thought. Sam Rockwell is a surprisingly good actor and carried the film himself. You've got some good movies ahead John, enjoy! Oh and the girl in Old is your girl from Last Night In Soho. Think she is Australian or thereabouts and very good with the accents. Trap by Syamalan is very good.
I've been playing catch-up since the pirate stole my BFI IMAX video Bob. He rather dulled my interest in putting time into UA-cam videos. Aliens should be a big one though so I'll try to get that organized with Simon this side of Christmas. By then perhaps The Terminator 4K will find its way into my possession too and then I think I'll have done videos of all of my ten favourite films so a Top Ten might be another biggish upload sometime. We'll see. John.
@@moviecollector5920 Take it as a compliment, that your work is so good that its worth stealing. Don't let it dampen spirits too much as you are obviously going in the correct direction.
My support for HMV has emptied my wallet..have pre-ordered the new Deadpool movie Terminator and Last night in Soho collectors edition all steelbooks 😄
Great pickups John. I just watched Smile 2 which I enjoyed and was worth the trip to the local cinema. A shade better than the first IMO. Late night with the Devil was another independent cinema trip a while back and I enjoyed it. Not my typical film but I enjoyed the presence of the film... the only slight let down was the I didnt find the ending hit the spot compared to the rest. Got to say I enjoyed Aliens on 4K. A bit more grain would have been nice... and Moon, like you I've brought the 4k but I'm yet to watch it. Enjoy watching all of these and I look forward to any future reviews.
Thank you Darren. I'll try to do something when Terminator 2: Judgement Day is running through the projector. It's just a shame I haven't got the 4K so we can have a look at that too and let everyone know how the two compare. John.
@@moviecollector5920that would be a really interesting comparison, especially the controversy that James Cameron 4k's tend to cause. If it were at all possible, I'd be more than happy to send your way.
@@moviecollector5920 that is a shame because that would be interesting, especially with all the controversy the James Cameron 4K's have recieved. I'd be more than happy to send this your way if that were at all possible John.
@@Darrenlovesmovies Very kind of you Darren but we're watching T2 tomorrow. I have the film on Super 8 and so I was never going to watch a 4K of it all the way through even if I did buy a copy. Same with Aliens, Alien, Star Wars, The Terminator, The Abyss and a whole lot more. John.
@moviecollector5920 your entire collection must be a thing of beauty John. I can imagine your channel has just touched the surface of all the movie stuff you've got. Enjoy T2! Not too long ago I watched a 35mm scan of some scenes. Not sure how it was done but really cool to see
Glad to know you enjoyed Twisters. Bill Paxton was a big reason for the success of Twister as far as I'm concerned. I don't think anyone else could have pulled that role off as well. Just as well we all have varying opinions though. John.
@Movie Collector Super purchases, John ! Have fun watching them. Very interested in your view on Aliens. Smile is still on my wishlist. Interesting movie.
I don't think I'll see very much of the Aliens 4K Pieter, but enough to get a good impression of how it looks and what has been done to it. Don't know when I'll get together with Simon for this though but hopefully before Christmas. John.
The future video you will hopefully make on Aliens 4k is something I’m looking forward to. Also a huge favourite movie of mine. I saw in cinema 4 times as a teen and still favour the theatrical cut it over the directors cut.
I'm the same as I don't much like the 17 minute longer version. I do like the smart gun sequence though but the rest of it was right to be excised. I don't know when Simon and I will be able to get together to watch his 35mm print of Aliens but I'll try to get it organized before the end of the year. John.
All is possible on a TV Show. That's the real Horror. In this Collection, apart from alien, moon is my favorite. Again great acting of Sam Rockwell and good work of Duncan Jones before Source Code and Warcraft the beginning...
Hi John, interesting round up of your recent hauls! (bit of a long comment, sorry!) I've recently picked up a couple Arrow releases - Chronicles of Riddick (I already have their release of the earlier Pitch Black) and was interested in the set containing no less than THREE versions of the movie, all in 4k (theatrical, director's cut, and a special theatrical open matte version, which I'm presuming was created for Imax). Sadly I was disappointed with the picture - good, but no improvements over the blu ray IMO - in fact felt like a upscale from the blu ray instead of a new scan, with the director's cut having tiny split second jumps where they originally edited the movie on film and cut the negative, then re-instated the director's cut scene, same as the blu ray - i thought it a missed opportunity to do something like use AI to recreate those missing frames and fix the jumps. A nit-pick, but if I can think of it, why couldn't they? It made me reconsider when looking at other Arrow releases I'm looking forwards to - have Demolition Man pre-ordered from them in December, and tempted to pick up Guy Ritchie's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. which I hugely enjoyed, but I already have the very good blu ray, and wonder if I will be similarly dissatisfied with it. I did pick up Arrow's 4k of Michael Mann's Blackhat (both it and MNan From U.N.C.L.E. are very reasonably priced at HMV and on arrow's site for £17.99). It's a cyber thriller which failed at the box office, but the arrow release contains the US cut, international cut, and a special new director's cut which has the film in it's original scene order before it was changed for theatrical release. Annoyingly, the theatrical cuts are 4k, the director's cut which barely contains any additional scenes, just largely a different scene order, is only HD on a second blu ray disc. I am glad I bought it, as it is a movie that has aged well and I think is better for it. But considering if i'm ever to watch it again, I'll probably just watch the superior director's cut, I feel a bit duped into paying more for a 4k version I'll likely never watch again when I would have bought the cheaper blu ray release with all the same content, only the 1st disc is not 4k. Feels like again, a wasted opportunity, and a bit of a misleading tactic. I also today picked up Mann's latest movie Ferrari on 4k, which was in the HMV £9.99 at the till with any purchase. Sadly, 4k only and no blu ray (which I believe is included with it in other territories), but I'm looking forwards to seeing it as i missed it at cinemas, but will have to wait for the time to get to it. Regarding not having the blu ray version included, as you also mentioned this in this video, I'm all too aware now in the UK of the number of releases with no blu ray - at present I have 4k in the downstairs, but in the bedroom where I may want to watch something the other half doesn't, I don't have a 4k player nor do I have a 4k TV there, so having blu ray is nice for that option - but Warner Bros and Universal especially seem to be doing away with this, I accepted this with Ferrari for the £9.99 offer as I consider that worth it - but if they are only including the 4k disc, they should be cheaper, when the RRP of a lot of titles if anything, are going up, some priced upwards of £25-35 for some titles. It feels like just greed on the studios part. Currently, I have yet to get Dune parts 1 and 2, I had planned to wait for both to be out on disc, part 1 includes the blu ray, but part 2 does not (sadly part 2 also had an amazing Imax transfer, which they have said they will not release on disc). Making this issue more annoying is that many other territories are getting the blu ray included still! Dune pt 2, Fast X, Violent Night for example - America, Canada, France, Germany and Italy, all get the blu ray, for the same price. Region coding does not apply to 4k discs (with the exception of some rareties) but the blu ray regions for America and Canada are a risk (as we found with Point Break). But that's what's great about the ones in Europe - they are the same region blu ray. The only difference is the box art language - modern new releases will have the original language audio. Plus, given the extortionate UK prices, the imports can surprisingly on sites like the amazon counterparts, end up being cheaper! As much as I want to support the UK releases, the difference can add up when getting several titles. You can get a box of both Dune 4k's AND blu rays, for not much more than you pay here for just the single 4k of part 2. It's just not economically viable to continue with some of the disc prices in this country. Anyway, Ramble over, looking forwards to seeing your coverage of Aliens, I thought a fair compromise of Grain vs modern clean up of the image, though be interesting to see what you think - though you did think more highly of Cameron's mastering of True Lies which was given a similar treatment (the big difference will be in how much visually darker a movie Aliens is). See you on the next one! Andrew
That must have taken some time to type in Andrew. Perhaps look up those Riddick films on IMDB and within the Technical Details page see if they were ever shot and finished on film because it's possible they only had 2K digital intermediates which would explain perhaps why they don't look quite as good as you'd hoped. 'Crap in, crap out' is the old expression. When it comes to the cost of new 4K disc releases I think we need to keep in mind how much work and money goes into creating them. The fact that so many are appearing on the market now suggests the profits are justifying the time and expense and that's a good thing. If leaving a duplicate Blu-ray copy out of a case means that a release is worthwhile then that's good enough for me. The one concern is the fragility or susceptibility of 4K discs which could mean that a few years down the line we're all wishing the Blu-ray had been included. But I think that's going to be a much rarer occurrence than it looked like it would be a while ago. I've looked at Blackchat several times. It looks like my sort of thing but because a review video would not do well I haven't been able to invest in a copy... yet. The Dune sequel might have had scenes shot 1.43:1 and some of them looked very good, but it wasn't IMAX. I know I've been through this over and over again but there is no comparison between the real McCoy 15/70 IMAX and anything shot on video. Dune 2 actually looks better in the 'Scope frame and that was something I found myself thinking about while watching it at the BFI IMAX. The 4K is therefore better in the 'Scope frame rather than having all that aspect ratio shifting which means the size of the screen has to be reduced to incorporate it. Aliens should look impressive on 35mm. I haven't seen a 35mm print since 1986 but the Super 8 prints are very good so 35mm will be even better. I don't know when I'll be able to get together with Simon though so stand by for that one. It might be a while. John.
I think Exorcist III was 1991. Amazing that I've managed to avoid watching it again since then. MOON is an intelligent film but watch the trailer first just in case it's not up your street. John.
Have you ever had training in cinematography? When I retire it's what I want to learn. What makes a good film good and a bad film bad but yet somehow, I know the difference but can't express how.
I haven't had any training ever Rusty but I've been shooting film and more recently video for so long that I tend to think I know enough for what I need now. I do quite often pick holes in films for continuity and framing sort of issues but I think all of us who have produced movies or documentaries have likely developed that side-effect. If you do go down the path of getting properly trained in cinematography I expect you'll see things in your favourite films that never stood out before. John.
Late night with the devil is incredible. Think Ghostwatch (if you remember it…). It’s conceptually brilliant and balances horror, humour and drama really well. Joker is great - but it clearly borrows from Taxi Driver. Despite this, the central performance is incredible and the lead-up to the end is fantastic! Thanks, Clark!
I've recently bought the 4k Late night with the Devil John, but am waiting to watch it with my partner. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. It's got lots of great reviews so looking forward to it. Moon is brilliant too. I also loved that movie. Sam Rockwell is brilliant in it. Keep the videos coming :)
I hope you both enjoy Late Night With The Devil. It was quite a good one for Halloween but I'm not quite sure of it. It's interesting though and possibly will come across as a better film second time around. I'm just sorry that I re-watched MOON about a year ago because I probably won't fancy watching it again for quite a while now. John.
I hope you enjoy Late Night With The Devil if you do finally get to see it. It's a bit different to anything that's gone before but elements of Cannibal Holocaust and Lake Mungo with a bit of Censor aspect ratio shifting are in there. John.
We ran the 35mm print yesterday Kevin. An absolute treat to see T2 as it was again. I do have it on Super 8 but 35mm is even more special, complete with the so-called 'teal' look that many people complain about on some 4K discs. John.
Excellent vid John, i enjoyed Late Night With The Devil, very well made, looked like a 70's talk show..I got the 4k of Exorcist 3 too,Smile was a nice surprise viewing...looking forward to your Aliens video 😊
Evening Marty. I don't know when I'll get together with Simon for Aliens but I thought I should get the 4K just in case we can make it happen this side of Christmas. John.
@@MadMartysMovieReviews-gv6hk You too Marty. And keep up the good work. It's nice to have a few other reviewers who are themselves in front of camera rather than putting on a brash personality. John.
I preordered the Exorcist 3. I also picked up smile for £9.99 when I picked up A Nightmare on Elm Street in HMV . Aliens was a given for me regardless of it's 4k criticism as it's in my Top Ten. I also like to support the actual stores as I've only got an HMV where I live so I do a mix of online and In store. I forgot Late night with the devil was out so that's a trip to town for me tomorrow.
I don't suppose I'll see much of the 4K of Aliens but I only bought it to include it in a UA-cam video so it will serve its purpose even if it is a waste of money. Late Night With The Devil is interesting but probably not brilliant. It might play better on a second watch though so I suppose I'll find out in five or ten years time! John.
I love the 4K of Aliens, it's absolutely stunning to MY eyes but I'm very aware that my opinion isn't shared by everyone however in Cameron's defence, the filmstock he used was a new kodak one and if I remember correctly the actual stock he wanted was unavailable and so he was forced to use one we've all been used but this was withdrawn by Kodak because it caused excessive grain in low lighy conditions. This means that technically speaking. Aliens has never looked the way it was supposed to and so the last Blu-ray release had grain reduction applied and the 4K again but a lot of folks don't like revisionism.
One of the Kodak negative stocks used to shoot Aliens had been used in the production of Ghostbusters two years before. It must have been the other of the two stocks that was new then. I think I mentioned that I'd run my Super 8 print twice recently and I have to say that I'm surprised by how good it looks. I have a second print and I ran a reel of that a couple of weeks ago and that looks the same even though I put it through my second brightest machine. The first has an HTI lamp which means it's the brightest possible image from Super 8 and that makes the film prints look brighter and deeper than any other method of projection. The film grain is not excessive but what there is does suit the film. I projected it 8 feet wide from a 12 foot throw which is quite a stretch for Super 8. It should have looked poor at that size and distance. We'll see how the 35mm print stands up to similar treatment soon... I hope. John.
It's not the transfer Doug, that's an automated process now rather than a skilled technician monitoring an aerial image as it transfers across as video to a computer. No, it's the mastering where the skill is required today and James Cameron wanted to make it look as clean and as modern as possible. I think most general purchasers will think it's wonderful, it's just us film enthusiasts who have a bit of knowledge of how most films tend to look who get a bit hot under the collar about these things. It won't bother me as I have two copies of Aliens on Super 8 and that's what I'll always want to run rather than a video. But the Blu-ray is probably good. The NTSC CAV LaserDisc is so surely the Blu-ray will surpass that. John.
@moviecollector5920 I have T2 and the Abyss on 4k. The Abyss is the best I've seen it as I'd only seen it on the tele. T2 looks dreadful. I hear that Aliens is an upscale for the old transfer and can get waxy like t2 and true lies. It'll be good to hear your opinion on it.
Interesting I didn’t know Exorcist 3 was out over here in 4K. It’s not on Amazon strangely. I already have the arrow blu ray of it which looks excellent but I would probably pick it up again in 4K because it’s a great sequel. I’d really like the to see the Aliens 35mm vs 4K idea. I have the 4K one so would love to see the comparison between what it looked like when it came out. Considering how controversial Cameron’s 4K releases of his older stuff has been I can tell I’d most likely prefer the film version.
I've run the Super 8 print a couple of times and also put a reel of my second print on to check that. The image area on Super 8 is 6mm across and it surprised me how good the film looks. If the 35mm holds up as well with the far larger picture area then it should be a lot of fun. I projected the Super 8 about 8 feet wide from a 12 foot throw. It really should not look as good as it does. Film grain is not excessive and now that I know it wasn't the Super 8 prints that caused the slightly grainy nature of how it looks, I'm surprised by how good it really is. I saw a 70mm blow-up three times in 1986 and although the 1.85:1 aspect ratio was always disappointing, I have no recollection of disappointment in the quality of the image. I saw a 35mm print a few months later and that was not as good, but we'd all expect that from a general release print. John.
Second Sight Films issue some very special packs. I don't have many of them but The Hitcher was particularly impressive so I had to splash out on that one. John.
I really enjoyed Late Night With The Devil but without David Dastmalchian it wouldn't be half as effective, the guy is an amazing actor, he's brilliant in The Last Voyage of the Demeter as well.
Hi John! I've never heard of LNwtD so gonna look for it and give it a watch. The Exorcist 3 is one that I should watch again as well having not seen any sequels to the first one. Perhaps one day I'll read these books. Saw Old at cinema's with my daughter and wasn;t too blown away by it but perhaps another watch in 4k may change my view. As for Joker I bought this cheap for 15cdn and it has both 4k and bluray. I've not watched it yet for some reason I just don't want to watch it. My oldest is a fan of it and I keep telling him to watch King of Comedy by Scorcese instead but in fairness I havn't seen Joker yet so cannot pass judgment till i've sat through it. lol anyway I do really look forward to Aliens 4k and anything you do with Terminator. I am going to check out a fav of mine at the cinemas this week North by Northwest by Hitchcock. Can't wait. Meanwhile hope all is well with you guys and all the best Cheers D in BC!
Morning Dave. Watch the trailer for Last Night With The Devil before you buy it just in case you don't feel the deliberate television look is something you'd be entirely happy with. It was a good one for Halloween evening so perhaps it's one for 12 months time. North By Northwest shouldn't be allowed in cinemas today unless they are screening new, pristine film prints of master print quality. It just isn't right so I hope they don't mess up your memories of that film. John.
@@moviecollector5920 Good afternoon to you John it's Top of the morning here but thought i'd say hello and report back that North by Northwest at our cinema was pretty great to see however I really love this film a ton and now have a sense of what it may of been for those seeing first time way back at the turn of 1959/60is . I understand what you are saying. I know this is coming out soon in 4k and hoping it's going to look great for home cinema. Again after a hundred television commercials and a long long intro from Turner Classic Movies TV CHANNEL... (giving us the entire plot and all the scenes to look for etc hahaha my tongue is in cheek ) Regardless it doesn't kill the memory as I never have seen it in a cinema not being born till 68 hahah Just a great movie regardless (it wasn't too empty either there were many who came out to see it.. and I hope the new 4k dosn't disappoint. Hope all is well meantime and all the best D!
Horrors aren't really my thing any longer but I did enjoy Late Night With The Devil despite it not being the best horror I've ever seen. It was more because it was different and therefore interesting. John.
I'll be happy when this time of year is gone. I have never liked horror films. Anyway, I am glad to see this video of yours today. I'm looking forward to seeing your video on Aliens, not necessarily for the film, but more for the level of knowledge likely to be on display. I haven't seen Aliens since it came out on VHS back in the day. Twisters I am looking forward to as well. 🎉
You should give Aliens another try Timothy. It's not a horror film, it's more of a science fiction adventure film. Alien is a horror so probably best to steer clear of that one and see how much you enjoy Aliens before deciding if you think you could get through the spooky suspense of that first great film. Twisters should be fun but I'm not expecting the same level of greatness of the 1996 film. John.
@moviecollector5920 Actually, I was hoping you had made it over to the BFI IMAX to watch Superman the movie. I found out yesterday that it is showing there. I know there probably isn't much more that you can say about the film than you did when talking about the 4k, but a video like the one you did for Interstellar, or Tenet, would have been a wonderful means of living vicariously through you 😀. As for Aliens, maybe I will one day. But for what I've heard, it won't look much like it did back then; unless I can get a VHS or something.
@@TimothyMathetes-e2o LaserDisc may be the best route to go down for Aliens Timothy but it's possible the DVD is similar to look at and of course, that will project better with modern equipment as LD players never came with HDMI outputs. As for Superman at the BFI IMAX, I did see Superman Returns there which had a 1.43:1 15/70 sequence but unfortunately it was 3D so not as impressive as it should have been. As far as I'm concerned it would be rather pointless seeing Superman there as it would be video projected which I can do at home. Were it a 70mm blow-up and the full width of the screen could be filled with their dual gauge 35mm/70mm projector then that would be a different kettle of fish. This is the problem that cinema has today, there is little point going to see a film in the average cinema when you can watch almost exactly the same quality video at home. Sorry for the delay in replying - I was rather tied up yesterday largely because of Terminator 2 on 35mm. It was rather good to say the least. John.
@moviecollector5920 I thought you might say that about viewing Superman the movie. But I would've liked to see how excited people were about the event. If there were any younger people interested in seeing it and all that and what it looks and sounds like in that place, even if it was just a video projection. Nevertheless, I understand what you mean. I saw Terminator 2 three times on the big screen, and I wish I could see it like that again. It is a beautiful looking film. The 4k however, is abysmal. I heard that it's being redone. I hope it's true.
@@TimothyMathetes-e2o Terminator 2: Judgment Day is another one that we have multiple home video and home movie options with. I've never watched the DVD but I have dipped into the PAL LaserDisc and it's excellent. The sound is excellent on the LD too. I'm beginning to think more movie enthusiasts need to track down good, used LD players. It might help some of them who tend to get a little too hot under the collar when they're upset that a 4K disc isn't to their liking. John.
Many people will be happy with how T2 looks on the 4K disc taken from the 3D abomination but you and I prefer the look of film so it's unlikely we'll like it. Apparently Aliens is similar but if it's been re-worked more to the level of The Exorcist, which was impressive (a little too impressive though as it took some of the mystery out of it because we could see everything), then I think most people will think it's great. I've only ever seen T2 on film. First time was the 70mm blow-up at the Odeon Leicester Square, then the Super 8 print which I have today and then finally on 35mm when a colleague was gifted the print that was used to master the Super 8 prints. I do have it on LaserDisc and DVD though but the LD has only ever been spun to re-record the Dolby Stereo soundtrack on the Super 8 print. John.
I think Joker might be a better film second time around. Many of us won't like the seedy, depressing setting and feel of the story but once you're expecting it, it might not seem so bad during a repeat screening. There's an interesting film in there... I think. John.
Watched late night with the devil last night, was underwhelming. Adore excorist III and watch all the time so I preordered this 4k instantly and watched the same day it was delivered.
You're probably a bit like me and have watched a lot of frightening films from a young age to the point we're anaesthetized to them now. This might be why I find so many modern horrors somewhat tedious and downright silly. John.
@@themaypole 7 seems a little young. I was 14 I think. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was another good shocker to impression a young mind. Those two probably set me up for life. Then there was Cannibal Holocaust which I didn't know anything about when parting with a few Francs to see it at an open air cinema in the south of France. Good grief! John.
@ I think the only horror to come close to actually creeping me out was paranormal activity because it found its way into my living room on an unmarked disc from a girl who came to the pub I lived in and I was a little uncertain what exactly I was seeing while alone upstairs in a supposedly haunted old pub.
I really liked Late Night with the Devil. I thought it was very inventive and loved the third act. I've watched it several times. Joker I've never watched & never will. It's not Thee Joker. Just a mentally ill incel in the wrong clown make-up who goes on a killing spree.
Ran the 35mm yesterday Daniel. You wouldn't like it as it has the blue hue that all the Agfa prints had back then. The 70mm blow-up I saw at the Odeon Leicester Square in 1991 was the same. I think that's what everyone means by 'teal' but the Teal actually has a more sort of green cheek so it's a little confusing. John.
John: We’ll compare the Aliens 4K to the 35mm print.
Me: well this should be fun.
A boys day out I think. Simon and I both love the Alien films. Well, all but Alien 3 of course.
John.
Should be a brilliant video. Actual film versus a film that’s been digitised, at James Cameron’s behest, to the point of removing all its filmic quality.
I watched Late Night with the Devil on Shudder for the first time last night, absolutely loved it. One of the best horror movies I've seen in years.
Glad you liked it. It's certainly original even if there are elements of Lake Mungo and even Cannibal Holocaust. Thankfully no one's eaten though!
John.
Agreed
I laughed almost all the way through, i thought it was hilariously bad on purpose

Good plug Dave. I have to admit that the cover of the 4K to The Holdovers had put me off so I'll take a look next time I'm in HMV.

Interesting selection. Especially the Exorcist III, which I know nothing about. I have the same Aliens disk though!

John.
Terminator 2 on 35mm, looking forward to the video.
We're running it today Benjamin. That's the plan anyway. John.
Worth watching just for the preview of a future vid on "Aliens". 35 v 4K comparison will be a revelation.
I already shot some short sequences of one of the Super 8 prints of Aliens running too Saint. Should be a fun one. John.
John.
Great pic ups..... looking forward to the Aliens comparison 😬 Thanks John
I'll try to sort something out with Simon for an Aliens 35mm soon Roy.

@moviecollector5920 your entire collection must be a thing of beauty John. I can imagine your channel has just touched the surface of all the movie stuff you've got. Enjoy T2! Not too long ago I watched a 35mm scan of some scenes. Not sure how it was done but really cool to see
Aside from the score, Twisters is a better film than it's predecessor. I loved Bill Paxton in a lot of films, but he was a dull leading man.
Glad to know you enjoyed Twisters. Bill Paxton was a big reason for the success of Twister as far as I'm concerned. I don't think anyone else could have pulled that role off as well. Just as well we all have varying opinions though.

@Movie Collector Super purchases, John ! Have fun watching them. Very interested in your view on Aliens. Smile is still on my wishlist. Interesting movie.

@ looking forward to it whenever it comes. No rush! Good things take time.

All is possible on a TV Show. That's the real Horror. In this Collection, apart from alien, moon is my favorite. Again great acting of Sam Rockwell and good work of Duncan Jones before Source Code and Warcraft the beginning...
I'd forgotten Duncan Jones had also directed Source Code Jens. Another great film. John.
Hi John, interesting round up of your recent hauls! (bit of a long comment, sorry!)
I've recently picked up a couple Arrow releases - Chronicles of Riddick (I already have their release of the earlier Pitch Black) and was interested in the set containing no less than THREE versions of the movie, all in 4k (theatrical, director's cut, and a special theatrical open matte version, which I'm presuming was created for Imax).

Late night with the devil is incredible. Think Ghostwatch (if you remember it…). It’s conceptually brilliant and balances horror, humour and drama really well.

I hope.
John.
Thanks again, John. I'm still doubtful whether I'll like the Aliens transfer.
John.
late night with the devil was enjoyable but wasn't scary joker is excellent good video
I do think quite a few people were frightened by Late Night With The Devil Chris. I wasn't but I can see why some would be. John.
I got the limited edition version of Late Night With The Devil, which does also come with the Blu-ray.
Second Sight Films issue some very special packs. I don't have many of them but The Hitcher was particularly impressive so I had to splash out on that one. John.
@moviecollector5920
Yeah, I got The Hitcher one as well. That's a good one. Quite a large box as well.
I really enjoyed Late Night With The Devil but without David Dastmalchian it wouldn't be half as effective, the guy is an amazing actor, he's brilliant in The Last Voyage of the Demeter as well.
I'd never seen him before as far as I can recall Andy. John.
I really like The Exorcist III, very good indeed. I have not seen it in 4k though.
I only saw it when first on general release so it's been a long time. Bloody tense and scary as I recall.
John.
I thought Late night with the devil, Abigail and Longlegs are my favourites horror films of this year.
Horrors aren't really my thing any longer but I did enjoy Late Night With The Devil despite it not being the best horror I've ever seen. It was more because it was different and therefore interesting. John.
Thank you John.
You're welcome as always Cheekster. John.
Smile is a very good movie. Enjoy😊
Thank you Morten. I'll get to it shortly.
John.
I haven't seen T2 on 4K but I believe it looks terrible, they used the 3D restoration by mistake.
John.
I eagerly await your thoughts on the Aliens 4K.
It might be a while but I'll try to get something organized with Simon before Christmas. John.
Never cared for this Joker. Liked Twisters. Never seen Late Night with the Devil. Thanks John
I think Joker might be a better film second time around. Many of us won't like the seedy, depressing setting and feel of the story but once you're expecting it, it might not seem so bad during a repeat screening. There's an interesting film in there... I think.
John.
Twisters did nothing for me. Aside from one sequence, I sat there with a big "WHY?" plastered across my face.
I'm prepared for it with lowered expectations. It often helps.
John.
Hope you review longlegs 4K one day!
I'm afraid just the name of that one has rather put me off so I'll take a look at the box when I'm next in HMV. John.
salut bonne revue de tout sa et belle vidèo
Merci Alain. John.
Blu rays eventually come down in price but not 4K disks maybe by a few pounds buy 2 for a certain price
Smile for £10 seemed like a good deal Neil. I quite often find a 4K for a tenner in HMV or FOPP. Even had 3 for £30 a few times. John.
@ these deals are for disks I already own or something I would not want to buy
@@neiltaylor6645 Try to hold off purchasing some of them immediately Neil and you'll be able to snap up a bargain occasionally.
A Twisters review would be greatly appreciated.
Coming soon if all goes to plan. John.

I look forward to it. The film seemed to divide the critics, so I’d value your opinion of it.
Joker is a good movie
Glad you like it Victor. I found the first half a bit of a slog but now that I know it I think it will play better next time around.
John.
@ my dad showed me Exorcist when I was 7 and horror has nvr scared me since but oddly enough it’s my most watched genre.
You should see "The Substance", John. Great film. Really well shot and the sound design is excellent. Best new film in years.
The Substance - I'll keep a lookout for it. Must try to remember but I'm getting on a bit now.
John.
@moviecollector5920
Starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. I saw a sneak preview. Should be on general release soon.
I really liked Late Night with the Devil. I thought it was very inventive and loved the third act. I've watched it several times. Joker I've never watched & never will. It's not Thee Joker. Just a mentally ill incel in the wrong clown make-up who goes on a killing spree.
Sounds like you know the Batman comics similarly to myself William. These constant reinventions and retelling are difficult to take as a result. John.
Gotta cut those finger nails!!! 😫
Maybe I'll take up biting them.
Terminator 2 on 4k is terrible.
To much blue teel on it.
John.
