  • Cyntha Berg, distinguished professor of psychology and former dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science, has taught and researched for more than 30 years how families can facilitate or derail the management of chronic illnesses, especially diabetes. She was among the first to show that enduring and managing stress is a collaborative process that relies on close relationships. Her work is internationally recognized.
While she was dean, she expanded the college’s degree offerings, increasing its undergraduate majors by 36 percent. As a professor, she challenges her students to excel while giving them support to succeed. Her impact at the U is long-lasting and deeply valued.
Jay Barney, presidential professor of strategic management and Pierre Lassonde Chair of Social Entrepreneurship, is regarded as being among the world’s top scholars of strategic management, a field he helped establish. His research is broadly cited as a pivotal work in the emergence of the “resourced-based view” strategy.
Barney is the U’s most widely cited academic, with more than 200,000 citations his research has received over the years. He also holds three honorary doctoral degrees at universities in Sweden, Denmark and Spain. And he has received the most prestigious awards his field has to offer. At the U, he was the founding chairman of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Strategy, which has since become one of the world’s top academic departments in this area.
