      Looks good in my opinion! The refurbishment is great and makes it look way younger than it is.😀

    I used to travel direct from Paddington through Fishguard to Ireland in the middle 1950's onwards before RoRo ferries operated the crossing. I remember that every car has to be put into a cradle and lifted by crane into the hold of the ships (St. David and St. Andrew if I remember). Always caught the evening train from Paddington so never saw Fishguard during the daytime - I didn't know that the port was literally cut out of the cliff face. Similarly in Rosslare - you could cross the platform from boat to train. Not as easy nowdays.

    Good video, Benjamin. It certainly looks like that lines worth travelling on sometime. The token at 14:18 is a safety mechanism for single lines. All single track railways use them, regardless of how quiet or busy they are.

    • @trainlagged
      @trainlagged  3 роки тому

      Ah, I didn't know that! Thanks for the info👍

    • @Rhydgaled
      @Rhydgaled 3 роки тому

      Err... Lots of single track railways uses them (the line to Pembroke Dock uses them for example, as does the Heart Of Wales), but I'm fairly sure the Milford Haven line doesn't (it will have some other safetey system, Track Circuit Block I think but could be wrong).

  • @justrains4657

    Nice video. About the fact that the 153s are not the quietest, I've seen EMUs that sound really noisy. the 317 is quite noisy. Hope to see more content soon!

    • @trainlagged
      @trainlagged  3 роки тому

      Older units are generally louder. Compared to modern EMUs, 317s are quite loud!
      Stay tuned :)

    The Fishguard line used to have 3 more intermediate stations: Wolfs Castle Holt, Letterston Junction and Mathry Road but were closed and demolished thanks to Beaching. Fishguard and Goodwick used to have a 2nd platform, signal box, engine shed and small goods yard which closed in the 60s, the location of it is now where the industrial estate is. Fishguard Harbour used to have 5 platforms, more ferry services and a goods area accessible via the breakwater, not sure when the platforms got closed and demolished although the goods work continued until privatisation of Sealink, when the port was taken over by Stena, the goods traffic ceased and the number of routes was cut down to one. Hope you learned something about the communities much loved little line

    Good video. Nice to see the trains connect with the ferry times again. Stena changed their ferry times a few years ago that prevented this for a while. Suggestion was that they were focusing more on freight than foot passengers..

    • @trainlagged
      @trainlagged  3 роки тому

      Oh, alright, I thought that had always been the case. Anyhow, it is the case now with the times very well aligned. I assume they're also aligned the other way around too, so that passengers who disembark have enough time to board the train.

      @@trainlagged Rosslare Europort on the other side used to have direct trains to Waterford, Limerick, Cork & Dublin. Only the Dublin line is left. The station is also no longer in the port downgraded to a single platform just outside, unfortunately...

    • @Rhydgaled
      @Rhydgaled 3 роки тому

      @@trainlagged They have been aligned with the ferries for many, many years. In May 2017 the ferry times were changed yes but the train times were quickly adjusted to match. One odd result though was that the train in the middle of the night (about 1am) stayed in the timetable until COVID hit even though the ferry it used to connect with had been moved to a slightly more sociable hour.

    Perhaps Transport for Wales should retain the Class 175 Alstom Coradia DMUs to be used on the West Wales Line as its to be replaced by the Class 197 CAF Civity.

    • @trainlagged
      @trainlagged  3 роки тому +1

      Currently, they are used on the WWL on Milford Haven services. The Fishguard service is a bit of a wildcard for TfW since any train from their fleet can operate the service.

    Well, so far we haven't had any pedants complaining that a 153 logically can't be called a train. So have they finally 'got a life'?

    • @trainlagged
      @trainlagged  3 роки тому

      I mean, it is a train since it rides on rails. No debate on that! ;)
