When the pirates storm the ship, that was Tom Hanks' first time meeting any of the Somali actors. In that scene. This is also the first time a lot of them have acted, including the head pirate.
The ending in the ship hospital was so moving. All the people they picked were actual serving in the Navy at the time. Hanks did a good job showing the shock of being rescued.
This event is actually what started shipping companies putting security on big ships like this now. It’s why that while pirate attacks still do happen they don’t succeed as much as they used too.
Just to add to something you mentioned about the freighters needing to have guns. Many do choose to use Russian or US private security forces who do carry firearms in international waters. So many firms not wishing to deal with piracy took that route and do have armed guards on board and will shoot at oncoming pirate vessels. There's plenty of videos around of Private security vs pirates on YT.
The way piracy works is whenever these pirates take a ship or a crew member/captain hostage and they make it back to Somalia the shipping companies then are the one that have to pay the pirates so when they said they wanted millions from Philips ship that means they where gonna hood the ship for ransom and the shipping company would have to pay it if they wanted to get the ship and crew back.
BHD’s casting people should have taken a note from CP’s casting people. I mean I’m sure the very talented West Africans did their best… a proper Somali accent is not easy, and I can’t fault anyone for not Adrian Brodying their physique, The Pianist style. But still. Don’t cast the incorrect ethnicity when it’s part of the plot.. it’s to cinema what “yellow face” was to musical theatre. Otherwise great film! The British actors did great with THEIR accents! And the score is easily in my top five OSTs dating back to discovering them in the early 90s - Zimmer is a genius.
The Somali pirates have to be brave because they are poor. That’s why their clothes are tattered. One guy has no shoes. Despite the millions they’ve gotten it’s like they have sanctions that stop goods from coming into the country. And/ or the people who run the group get all the money. Why does that sound familiar?😮 The irony is the continent is mostly poor because of European countries taking their resources. An inhumane practice that is still happening. It’s bad for the economy and the environment. The africans are trying to survive just like the Americans. However you were right when you said the American’s job shouldn’t require them to risk their lives. The corporation that owns that boat could have bought weapons to give their workers a chance. But they didn’t, even though it’s pocket change for them. Instead they use the the American government and armed forces to supplement their security. I’m no expert, but I suspect that armed rescue of with boats and helicopters, is more expensive than a few armed guards acting as chaperones. It’s also more humane to try to prevent the harm of employees risking their lives for the financial benefit of the top executes of a business. Get the G4 jet plane on Thursday instead of Wednesday. Putting people at risk with no protection just to continue getting richer at a faster pace than last year is cruel. Using taxpayer money and that’s supposed to help the citizens of that country, is greedy. The fact that there isn’t money for the citizens to help them forcing them to take jobs that puts their lives at risk is sadistic on multiple levels. It’s like they are land loving pirates, the people who are in charge and create this environment of futility. Those faceless people are just like the ones who are the bosses of the Somali pirates. Except they AREN’T stealing to survive. They are just heartless for greed sake. Plus they are less honest. Besides if someone came to your home, took your stuff and accused you of hurting them because you tried to protect your home, would you think it was okay just because the police arrested you? Just because the Americans have the money to take resources world wide, police the world with its army that’s worldwide and bleeds their citizens dry, and have new reports, t.v shows, and movies that portray them as a victim as they get attacked in other peoples back yards, doesn’t make them right. It doesn’t even make sense. If some other country had army boats near an an American shore, it would be considered an act of war. Just having unknown drones fly over parts of America a couple of years ago that was blamed on China seemed like it may lead to war. If those same boats were taking resources while dropping off some crumbs and calling that philanthropic, the citizens who tried to stop that boat wouldn’t be pirates. They’d be patriots. Then there’s the fact that the pirates who can’t afford shoes, have guns. The Americans who have shoes, don’t have guns in situation that is known to be dangerous. It’s beyond ironic. It reminds me of the good old days during the new Roman Empire when slaves were pitted against each other for the entertainment of the poor citizens. Who were being distracted from their grim existence caused by the senator’s bleeding them dry by overtaxing and working them to death. Too busy to see they were slaves themselves. In that regard both groups of people are so poor they have to do work that requires them to risk their lives in order to work to feed themselves and avoid certain death from hunger and exposure to the elements. They’re in the same boat. Pun intended. Poor people who should fight it out to the death for rich people who benefit. It’s a matter of class and race. Nationality is just a distraction. And women are just after thoughts. Their only place in this world is be the worried wife at home and the abrasive nurse. I’m glad REAL life isn’t like this. 😂
I certainly agree that you can't condone what the pirates did, but I think it's a bit simplistic to write them off as simply bad. You don't have to condone or excuse behavior to try to understand the deeper causes of why it happens. Imagine if you lived as a Somali in a lawless country in which every day was a fight for basic survival. Could you at least understand what would drive desperate people to engage in piracy? And our western developed countries aren't exactly pure.. Many terrible things have been done because of the greed and ambitions of our leaders. Just because it's done by nations doesn't make it any less evil than what these pirates did. Again, to understand behavior is not to excuse it.

That scene was on par with meeting little Forrest Gump and wondering if he was smart. Masterful acting. 🎭
Which snipers they used omg😲..too much powerful. it took three pirates in one shot..huge respect to those snipers
Simple. Daniel Defense Mk.11 Mod 0, also known as the SR-25.

If you don't wanna get clapped, stay strapped.

Great Reaction To This Great Classic Movie Sweetheart
Not-so-fun fact… it is known globally what a low amount the Academy nominated/BAFTA winner was paid for his work here. 🤣🤦🏻♀️🤬
Tom Hanks made millions. Barkhad Abdi and his fellow actors made only $63,000 each.
Don't make Tom Hanks cry.
