There is really no substantial reason why the Churches should remain split. A union is theoretically possible. The only problem is that there has been 1500 years of division, where a lot of councils have happened, and so the division with the Oriental becomes deeper, as they were not a part of these councils. If the Oriental accept all councils, and the Orthodox acknowledge that the Oriental have practiced Orthodox faith in their best capacity, then we can see a possible union. But as an Orthodox convert, I really dont feel any animosity between the communities. We Orthodox organise events and gatherings with Oriental orthodox all the time. It is a very very mild schism that is not really felt. The Catholic vs Orthodox or Protestant v Orthodox is much more significant and real.
Keep in mind that many of the same Monophysite clergy who are seeking union with EO are also seeking union with Rome, so union of the EO with the Monophysites might also be a slippery slope to communion with Rome. "animosity" - I agree there is no reason to feel animosity over a sincerely held dogmatic difference, but as long as the dogmatic difference persists, there is an insufficient basis for reunion.

So what if you can go take the Eucharist in a Catholic Church one week and in an Orthodox Church the next? For the average Orthodox, they don't even know what the theological difference is! Additionally, consuming the Eucharist in a church you don't commune with doesn't change the fact that it's the body and blood of Christ.

Notice how when the Orientals split off from the Early Church its regarded as a split between Eastern Orthodoxy and Oriental Orthodoxy, meaning the Eastern Orthodox church much more closely resembles the Early Church than the Roman Catholic Church.

St. Cyril of Alexandria is highly admired in Eastern Orthodoxy and I assume in the RCC as well. The question is what did St. Cyril mean when he used the phrase "mono physis?" Unfortunately, he reposed in AD 444 so he could not answer for himself five years later at the "robber synod" of 449. However, I think the Chalcedonians got it right in 451, and remember that Chalcedon inevitably included other Greek bishops who had known St. Cyril personally. The monophysite party was primarily backed by Egyptian Copts at first, and I think there was some misunderstanding among them of what St. Cyril, writing in Greek, actually meant by mono physis in his debates with the Nestorians before the term physis had acquired a consistent theological definition.

9:39 any Ethiopians here want to explain why pork is still prohibited? In Acts 10:12-16, the Lord instructs peter to eat animals that were previously deemed unclean. Peter says he can't eat anything that the Jewish laws deemed unclean, and the Lord tells him _"What god has cleansed, you must not call common."_ Meaning that pork is no longer unclean. Do Ethiopians deny this, or is there some other reason why they don't eat pork?

as an aside, I find it amusing that Catholic missalettes in the States usually say in the rules for Communion that we urge the Orthodox to follow the disciple of their churches but from our side we do not object to the Orthodox coming to communion. A rare instance where Catholics are more easy going than the Orthodox.
There has always been one Church. ( Body of Christ ) to say there is an orthodox, Latin, etc. Churches is one more incident of man's pettiness, jealousy, etc. of his fellow man. As a Russian Orthodox, I deeply respect Ethiopian Orthodox people. I don't listen to some m0я0иs who go off about the "differences" in belief between "Eastern" and "Oriental" Orthodoxy. The more I learn about Ethiopian Orthodoxy and other branches of Orthodoxy, the more I see how little difference there is, the main one being language, others, not as much. Our traditions are very similar, from headscarf wearing, us celebrating the January 7th Christmas with the westernized folk rejecting the original Christmas, and more. Honestly I am appalled by all the "Orthodox" celebrating the December 25th Christmas like the West does. The more westernized the faith becomes, the less Christian it becomes. I would like something about the Assyrian Church of the East [mis-called "Nestorian" by the others], especially how they dealt with heresy in the Chinese branches, such things I have read such as: Chinese Christians did not believe in original sin, and treated women equally in religious matters. Did the HQ in Persia [who practiced and believed pretty much as E. Orthodox] just ignore the differences over their very wide church [stretching from Iraq to Mongolia and China & for a while into Japan, and down to Ceylon/S. India], or were they not aware of the heresy, or did they try to do something about it? FYI: By 700s AD there were more Christians in the Assyrian Church of East/aka "luminous religion" than in either: the Orthodox church [including all Catholics, no division yet], "Miaphysite" Oriental Orthodox /Coptic church, or Arian church. Now very little is left.

Funny thing is that, in Spanish, we lack a distinct word for Eastern while in English you have Oriental and Eastern, which help to make the distinction. We only have Oriental, which means exactly that in English, or Eastern. In turn, whenever you refer to the Orthodox from any tradition, adding Oriental is not only useless, but it's confusing and needlessly verbose, and as such, no one uses that. Instead, we just refer to everyone as Orthodox, and we just make the distinction as to what particular Tradition they adhere to. Even trying to delve into the IN/OF argument is murky as our language does not help make the distinction - We have EN/DE, but both are mutually interchangeable and so they wind up leading to the same meaning as they use our version of the verb "to be" to make sense. Thus, when you refer to the Orthodox Church, la Iglesia Ortodoxa, you could be referring to either the Greek Orthodox, the Coptic Orthodox, the Russian Orthodox, ect. I dunno if official reunification will happen during my lifetime, but unofficially it has already happened here. God bless Orthodoxy. Dios bendiga a la Ortodoxia.
A common practice, especially outside of the anglosphere, is to refer to the two communions as either the Chalcedonian Orthodox or non-Chalcedonian Orthodox.

I am Russian Orthodox and I view all Orthodox Christians---Ethiopian, Georgian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Egyptian, Syrian, Romanian, Greek, Serbian, Eritrean, Montenegrin, etc---to be my brothers and sisters. Unity would be nice, but I don't think the two (Eastern O. and Oriental O.) need to be politically/socially united to be truly united. We are already culturally and spiritually united, God bearing their witness, and I think that's what really matters. Things like politics are social constructions in this physical world that will disappear and hold ZERO relevance in the other world. Only the blind will not see it and attempt to invalidate Oriental Orthodoxy to support their $upэяioяiту complex. God will judge them, I suppose. Some people get too caught up in politics and miniscule differences, as if seeking any reason to spread натяеd.
Generally, while I think there is a difference in Christology between us, I still believe that we ought to be in communion. While we can schism all we want, as long as the views are somewhat coherent to true Orthodoxy there is no real reason to. It just weakens the Church as a whole
Tell me if this is true, Christ if fully human and fully God, the two natures came together and co existed fully. Therfore not as one new nature but as two united as one without mingling or mixing.
@@alankoshy1389 The argument lies in whether or not the union which is taught allows each nature to have its own separate and independent existence, or whether, as Cyril of Alexandria teaches, we confess a union in which these real and different natures are united such that Christ is One, even as the Nicene Creed professes. This independent diversity is what we should reject. Not the fact of the diversity of the natures, the humanity and Divinity, which are completely other and different from each other. The heart of our Christology, indeed of our Orthodox Christology, is that these two distinct and different natures have been united in a union that has no division even whilst their is no confusion. We do not refuse to confess the difference, God forbid! But we flee from this, that we should divide the one Christ in a duality of natures after the union. For if he is divided, the properties of each one of the natures are divided at the same time with him, and what is its own will cling to each one of them. But when a hypostatic union is professed, of which the fulfilment is that from two there is one Christ without confusion, one person, one hypostasis, one nature belonging to the Word incarnate. It is a hypostatic union that ensures the real union of these different natures. This passage makes clear that firstly, a hypostatic union does not introduce confusion between the humanity and the Divinity; secondly, that 'one nature belonging to the Word incarnate' does not mean either a confused divine/human nature nor does it mean that the humanity is swallowed up by the Divinity; thirdly, the passage makes plain that the union is one in which the different natures have their differences preserved but within one concrete existence, that of the Incarnate Christ, and not preserved independently as the Son of God and a man united in some external manner. The 'duality of natures' which is rejected is not the reality of the humanity and Divinity, but a division between them which destroys the union and which makes One Christ of the two without confusion.When we anathematise those who say Emmanuel has two natures after the union, and speak of the activities and properties of these, we are not saying this as subjecting to anathema the fact of, or naming, natures, or activities, or properties, but speaking of two natures after the union, and because consequently those natures...are divided completely and in everything.

I really appreciate this presentation. I am just orthodox Christian, here in the Appalachian Baptist world. There is a Coptic Orthodox Church in Roanoke and I never understood the reason why we weren’t in communion with them. Our church is in the Bulgarian patriarchate and we have zero Bulgarian members. I am glad to learn that contemplation of these matters is above my pay grade.

As a member of Indian Oriental Orthodox Church, I love my Church’s liturgy and traditions and proud of it. I know there would always remain differences among different Churches due to our egos and politics.But, in the end we Christians should remain united in our faith in the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, One True God, as Saint Paul had told us and should avoid fighting among us. We should remain united against enemies of our Christian faith and pray that our Christian faith remains strong. Amen 🙏

Honestly as a Catholic convert from protestantism all the schisms sadden me. We (orthodox, oriental and Catholic) all have so much in common we should come together at the very least in the area of accepting each other sacraments as valid and allowed to be shared if needed.

Let me preface that I was raised in a Lucifarian cult that presents as Biblical Christianity. I rejected the cult at 21 yo. I tried to go Atheist because I hated Christianity as I understood it. Then through a Damascas Road type experience, converted to Christianity. I started my walk with my Lord in the modern charismatic movement after a very brief time in Pentecostalism, just long enough to recieve the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with evidenced by Speaking in Tongue's, something that has benefited my personal walk greatly. The Roman Catholic church in it's excesses is way too off base for me but I have been attracted to the Eastern Orthodox expressions, Greek, Russian, etc. It seems to be far more true to the simple gospel of Christ, I like that there are both monastic and married priests allowing for ones relationship with God to set the boundaries of service. I am also interested in gaining a better understanding of the Ethiopian and Coptic expressions of Christianity. This series is going to be interesting and helpfull.
I think with the roman catholic churches problems they are having right now I dont see it happening. They really need to clean up thier act. They all split for a reason and that is the corruption of the roman catholic church. After the Borgias it really started going down hill and they were never able to bounce back. Which is sad because it was starting to get better. This shat a very nice catholic lady told me at work. I need to read up more on it.

Every time I run across Eastern Orthodox people who continually call the Oriental Orthodox by the term, "Non-Chalcedonians," and they don't really get just how nails-on-a-chalkboard aggravating it is, then I start constantly referring to the EO as, "You Non-Florentines." So many differences, but so minor, I just hope god will be pleased with all orthodox Christian’s despite their minor differences, the core ideas remain true. Just one thing tho about pork. Now the Spirit clearly says that in the last times some will depart from the faith and pay attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils ... commanding to abstain from foods, which God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and not to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." (see 1 Timothy 4:1-5). So pork is good 🐷
@@alexandrudamir4221 So for those that came from pagen faiths Paul and Timothy (1 Timothy 4:1-5 are seen easing the burden on “gentiles” In Acts 15 and 1 Cor 10 - Paul says Since you are gentiles (did not come from Jewish faith) I will be more lenient with you he teaches. But for those who come from Jewish backgrounds such as Ethiopians and Israelites it is a sin. It is like the same situation with Samson in Judges 13:5,7- “For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall *be a Nazarite* to God from the womb... 7...drink no wine or similar drink...” So if the Israelites cut their hair and drink alcohol it WILL NOT be a sin but if a Nazarite does these things it WILL BE a sin. The same with pork for Israelites and Ethiopians it is a sin for us but for those who came out of pagen or gentile ways it is not. So if you have to eat pork, put up Christmas trees, have Easter egg huntings, have modern-like instruments in church then _you might_ be able to justify these foreign ways of practice to be included in your faith with this verse and verses similar to being lenient on gentiles. 1 Corinthians 10:25 But if you prefer not to then of course there are verses like Isaiah 66:15-18 and Jeremiah 10:2-4 for example that teach us to steer away from foreign practices and pork. But as for us Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, these are all sins especially eating pork.
Look at the prophecy in Isaiah 66: 15-17 It says on the day Jesus comes with fire and His chariots (second coming) those found eating swine flesh will be judged. So if it’s not okay when Christ comes again why would it be okay now? You can read any trusted theological commentary on Isaiah 66 it refers clearly to the second coming. However for non Jews this does not apply.
@@alexandrudamir4221 When the Bible prohibits one and accepts the same thing that means it applies to a special case. For example lying, is prohibited but God tells Abraham to lie so his wife won’t get raped. Killing is not allowed but God accepts the death penalty as well. Reference: Genesis 9:6 I would suggest being a holistic Biblical reader rather than just cherry picking a verse.
The politics matter more than theology in the history here. The Syriac (aka Oriental) churches spread rapidly across central Asia, to China. It was them who built the Christian pagodas, two of which still survive. They also became established in India. The point is that they were largely outside the Roman empire and beyond its control. What counts here is the Eastern empire, of course, not the Western element which collapsed and devolved into a European power structure. The Eastern Orthodox church, in contrast, was mostly withing and firmly under the control of, the empire, run from Constantinople. They could not have rejected Chalcedon even if they had wanted to.

I am from India, being a member of the ancient Malankara Orthodox Church that is believed to be founded by St. Thomas, the Apostle in AD 52 We are still called St. Thomas christians or Nasranis, by Hindus, the majority community. Our church is one of the six oriental orthodox churches mentioned in this article. It seems like the author is from the eastern orthodox churches I am glad that he has somewhat extensivelly postulated the schism and theological differences among the various denominations. Everything was sunny and serene until the Chalcedon general council. Admittedly, all the first three councils of the universal church were generally accepted by one and all. Differences reared its head regarding the nature of Christ St. Cyril of Alexandria believed that c Christ, the Incarnate Logos, is of two natures rolled into one, that is, the unique nature of hundred percent God and hundred percent human. The others inthe Council contested this view They declared that Christ was in two separated natures The former is called monophysists and the latter, diaphysists. Andthey parted ways. It issaid, beyondtheological defferences, there is more to it There were four Patriarchates in the universal church namely Rome, Alexandria Constantinople and Antioch in that order of precedence But at Calcedon, Constantinople, being the emperor's eastern capital was given preference over Alexandria. This caused a furore and the two groups were mutally excommunicated. In my opinion, th dispute e over the nature of Christ oi is preposterous. For Nothing is impossible for God Almighty. He can be in two natures or of twonatures as He wills because we firmly believe that our Lord is hundred percent God and hundred per cent human. As for the unification of these two groups, sharing of Holy Communion, not amalgamation, is the need of the hour !
If your Malankara Church was founded by the Apostle Thomas in AD52 it wouldn't be part of any of the Orthodox churches discussed in this video because the schisms happened after AD500. Either you are believing a nonsense tale or this man in the video is wrong.

Sadly a bit of semantics and a bit of lack of patience ended in that division between the Orthodox Churches. What is particularly sad is that the Armenian Orthodox Church couldn't even attend the Council of Chalcedon because they were literally having a huge war against Persia at the time where many of their people died in a huge battle so they were seen as not knowing true Christology which was unfair because Armenia is the first full Christian nation in history. But we must remember that the strength of Orthodoxy is the diversity as well.

We Oriental Orthodox fear the separations of Jesus Christ in two since Jesus Christ can't be divided. He is united divinity and humanity with out mix without divide. But we afraid the other explanation to lead to a way of heretical thinking like the body of Christ as avatar.

Mainly I'm curious about the Assyrian Church of the East (Nestorian) but also all the minor divisions before that point, Celtic chuches, the Arian churches, ect. What ended up happening to them?
The Assyrian Church of the East split off from the roman Orthodox over the "nestorian" controversy officially, really because the Persians were persecuting some because they were seen as Roman Empire spies. The Assyrian Church of the East expanded thru Central Asia and into Mongolia, China and there are signs it was in Japan; also it spread into India especially S. India and Ceylon where it may have joined the Thomas Church. By 700 AD or 800 AD it was claimed to be bigger then either the roman Orthodox/Catholic, or the Arian Heretic Barbarians, or the Oriental Orthodox/Coptic churches in population. But then centuries of persecution by Chinese Legalistic Taoist and Buddhist Emperors who hated foreigners, by Hinduism which was becoming more militant and taking over India, by Manicheanism in Central Asia, by Muslims [especially Tamerlane], and then with plagues and the Mongol disaster - all made the Assyrian Church of the East go into hiding and reduced the numbers. Still, when Catholic Portuguese came to India and China they recognized there were still some "heretics" there. The Indian branch known as the Thomas church went into the Catholic i heard. The Chinese may have morphed into the Chinese House churches in Communist China. And in Iran and Iraq there were some left in the old churches in the 1970s - don't know if they have left.
@@tommy-er6hh Yes much of what you say is my understanding of that Church's history. Only thing to add from my understanding is that after European contact the St Thomas Churches of Kerala lost contact with the Assyrian church and Split roughly along original St Thomas, Catholic influenced, and Protestant influenced lines. Similarly, the Assyrian church in Northern Iraq and Iran at first became a hereditary church (leadership for their "pope" was in the same family) post contraction and then over the following centuries split along the original Assyrian, Orthodox influenced, and Catholic influenced (Chaldean church). The Original Church of the East still survives in Northern Iraq but is now a purely ethnic church that has shrunk due to the violent recent decades and actually has way more members with Assyrians in the USA and elsewhere than in their native land.
@@tommy-er6hh The Thomas Christians are still there in India. They were never persecuted by Hindus but sadly only by Portuguese Catholics. The followers of Nestorius left the Roman Empire and settled in the Persian Empire. The church grew in the Persian Empire and spread eastwards.
The Assyrian Church of the East, AKA "the Nestorians," follow the doctrine of the Greek Ecumenical Patriarch Nestorius who was condemned by the 3rd Ecumenical Council in AD 431 but rather than repent fled to the east where he would be sheltered by the Zoroastrian Persians. (A number of Christian heretics set up operations within Persian ruled areas, as did many Jews, and this religious "stew" set the stage for the emergence of Islam.) The Assyrians were in communion with Constantinople and the other Patriarchates (including the Roman patriarch of course) prior to the fifth century. None of the Ante Nicene groups (Arians, Gnostics, Montanists, Marcionites, Donatists, a few more) exist any more. The only Ante Nicene groups that still survive are, going west to east, the Roman Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox, the Monophysites, and the Nestorians.
All this division is why my faith is all sorts of lost. Also, I just can’t imagine Jesus Christ saying, “which side of the Orthodox Church were you a part of?” when He comes back 🤷🏾♀️
I heard somewhere that a number of different churches are divisions of where the Apostles went, such as the majority of the church of India was started by Thomas, and the Coptic church (Egypt) was started by Mark. Regarding the places of which people ought be bishops between Oriental and Eastern Orthodoxy, I say there are two solutions: either separate the Church into separate and equally autosephalus rites like the Catholics, or to ask current bishops to retire, and appoint NEW bishops by councils equally made up of Eastern and Oriental clergymen.
In the 20th century, a number of dialogues have occurred between the Oriental Orthodox and the Chalcedonian Orthodox which revealed that both communions now share a common Christology with differing terminology. As yet, full communion has not been restored. There have also been some agreed Christological statements issued in conjunction with the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox (Chalcedonian) family (Ecumenical Patriarchate and official representatives of other Eastern Orthodox Churches) [1].
There are activists on both sides who *pretend* to share a common Christology with differing terminology. This has never been true historically (and attempts backed by the Emperor were made in ancient times to find a compromise formula to no avail), and I doubt that it has suddenly become true today. Ecumenists in Eastern and Western Christendom all use the same rhetorical tricks to pursue organizational union or inter communion without authentic doctrinal agreement. Persons of integrity in all of our confessions should resist this trickery.
I can confirm from first hand personal knowledge that here in the US, OOs are being communed in at least some EO parishes. And I have heard anecdotally that there have been instances of EOs being communed in OO parishes. There is not yet concelebration between clergy. But at least in some jurisdictions at the parish level, the people and clergy have decided that there is not enough dividing us to justify refusing the chalice. In parts you seem to suggest that there was a schism between the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches as if there was already a single body of 'Orthodox' churches (as distinct from a western church). This is simply not correct and although you often 'snap' back with a more correct description of events, the emphasis is all wrong leaving that impression. The second council of Chalcedon actually led to a split between the these 'Oriental' churches and the rest of the, as yet undivided, church that would later split into Orthodox or Catholic. It was not an 'intra-Orthodox' split.
From the Orthodox perspective, it was an Orthodox Split. As you say, the churches were all together at the time. There was the oriental Churches, and there were the rest of the Orthodox Churches (Which included those who would later be divided into EO and Catholic). All of Orthodoxy would say that all the churches at that time were in fact Orthodox.

I was raised and baptized as a Southern Baptist and then became a Roman Catholic in college until I became a communicant of Orthodoxy. I have to say that my sojourn in the above branches of Christianity gives me some authority when I say that your videos on all three of these branches are absolutely spot on!

Agreed, I call it a witch-hunt. (I'm a convert to Coptic Orthodoxy from the Salvation Army, an offshoot of Methodism, which in turn is an offshoot of Anglicanism, which in turn is offshoot of Catholism.)

There is really no substantial reason why the Churches should remain split. A union is theoretically possible. The only problem is that there has been 1500 years of division, where a lot of councils have happened, and so the division with the Oriental becomes deeper, as they were not a part of these councils.
If the Oriental accept all councils, and the Orthodox acknowledge that the Oriental have practiced Orthodox faith in their best capacity, then we can see a possible union.
But as an Orthodox convert, I really dont feel any animosity between the communities. We Orthodox organise events and gatherings with Oriental orthodox all the time. It is a very very mild schism that is not really felt. The Catholic vs Orthodox or Protestant v Orthodox is much more significant and real.
Keep in mind that many of the same Monophysite clergy who are seeking union with EO are also seeking union with Rome, so union of the EO with the Monophysites might also be a slippery slope to communion with Rome. "animosity" - I agree there is no reason to feel animosity over a sincerely held dogmatic difference, but as long as the dogmatic difference persists, there is an insufficient basis for reunion.

(By the way, the definition I just used can be applied to both Dyophysitism and Miaphysitism, which is what we actually believe in)

So what if you can go take the Eucharist in a Catholic Church one week and in an Orthodox Church the next? For the average Orthodox, they don't even know what the theological difference is! Additionally, consuming the Eucharist in a church you don't commune with doesn't change the fact that it's the body and blood of Christ.

Notice how when the Orientals split off from the Early Church its regarded as a split between Eastern Orthodoxy and Oriental Orthodoxy, meaning the Eastern Orthodox church much more closely resembles the Early Church than the Roman Catholic Church.

i am really surprised and happy that someone in the west understand the non-catholic - eastern orthodox view of our christology. finally someone listens and understood the true understanding of our christology. i could not describe Miaphysitism more clearly than this video but i just want to point out that if the Catholics and eastern orthodoxies this that they are real orthodox and are faithful to the christology of saint Cyril of Alexandria, why is he then not popular like the other fathers he was one of the most greatest theologian of all the fathers, his writings are amazing his commentaries on the gospels and on the old testament are amazing that you don't even need another church father to make things clearer. but in spite of things he is not even included as the other fathers are even in the eastern orthodox history not alone in Catholicism. but if we say we acknowledge saint Cyril then why do we is christology a dividing subject till now.

You understand there was only one Christian Church when that split occurred.
Western and Eastern but one.
St. Cyril of Alexandria is highly admired in Eastern Orthodoxy and I assume in the RCC as well. The question is what did St. Cyril mean when he used the phrase "mono physis?" Unfortunately, he reposed in AD 444 so he could not answer for himself five years later at the "robber synod" of 449. However, I think the Chalcedonians got it right in 451, and remember that Chalcedon inevitably included other Greek bishops who had known St. Cyril personally. The monophysite party was primarily backed by Egyptian Copts at first, and I think there was some misunderstanding among them of what St. Cyril, writing in Greek, actually meant by mono physis in his debates with the Nestorians before the term physis had acquired a consistent theological definition.
Excellent explanation of the differences between these Orthodox traditions and of the problem that denominational hardliners in any denomination always insist on causing. I pray the Lord will bless them to figure out a way forward.

9:39 any Ethiopians here want to explain why pork is still prohibited? In Acts 10:12-16, the Lord instructs peter to eat animals that were previously deemed unclean. Peter says he can't eat anything that the Jewish laws deemed unclean, and the Lord tells him _"What god has cleansed, you must not call common."_ Meaning that pork is no longer unclean. Do Ethiopians deny this, or is there some other reason why they don't eat pork?

as an aside, I find it amusing that Catholic missalettes in the States usually say in the rules for Communion that we urge the Orthodox to follow the disciple of their churches but from our side we do not object to the Orthodox coming to communion. A rare instance where Catholics are more easy going than the Orthodox.
There has always been one Church. ( Body of Christ ) to say there is an orthodox, Latin, etc. Churches is one more incident of man's pettiness, jealousy, etc. of his fellow man. One cannot divide the body of Christ ( The Church ) and his teachings just to fulfill the personal whims of one seeking power control over one congregation. I believe in one Church which includes western, Eastern, Orthodox. and would love to be able to celebrate mass in each and everyone of them as a Christian who believes in what was taught to me by Our Lord Jesus.

As a Russian Orthodox, I deeply respect Ethiopian Orthodox people. I don't listen to some m0я0иs who go off about the "differences" in belief between "Eastern" and "Oriental" Orthodoxy. The more I learn about Ethiopian Orthodoxy and other branches of Orthodoxy, the more I see how little difference there is, the main one being language, others, not as much. Our traditions are very similar, from headscarf wearing, us celebrating the January 7th Christmas with the westernized folk rejecting the original Christmas, and more. Honestly I am appalled by all the "Orthodox" celebrating the December 25th Christmas like the West does. The more westernized the faith becomes, the less Christian it becomes. Christianity was born in the *East,* and not the West. Some people need to learn that.

I am catolic and the eastern church are the ones to divide the church and both are arrogantes.
I would like something about the Assyrian Church of the East [mis-called "Nestorian" by the others], especially how they dealt with heresy in the Chinese branches, such things I have read such as: Chinese Christians did not believe in original sin, and treated women equally in religious matters.
Did the HQ in Persia [who practiced and believed pretty much as E. Orthodox] just ignore the differences over their very wide church [stretching from Iraq to Mongolia and China & for a while into Japan, and down to Ceylon/S. India], or were they not aware of the heresy, or did they try to do something about it?
FYI: By 700s AD there were more Christians in the Assyrian Church of East/aka "luminous religion" than in either: the Orthodox church [including all Catholics, no division yet], "Miaphysite" Oriental Orthodox /Coptic church, or Arian church. Now very little is left.

Funny thing is that, in Spanish, we lack a distinct word for Eastern while in English you have Oriental and Eastern, which help to make the distinction. We only have Oriental, which means exactly that in English, or Eastern. In turn, whenever you refer to the Orthodox from any tradition, adding Oriental is not only useless, but it's confusing and needlessly verbose, and as such, no one uses that. Instead, we just refer to everyone as Orthodox, and we just make the distinction as to what particular Tradition they adhere to. Even trying to delve into the IN/OF argument is murky as our language does not help make the distinction - We have EN/DE, but both are mutually interchangeable and so they wind up leading to the same meaning as they use our version of the verb "to be" to make sense. Thus, when you refer to the Orthodox Church, la Iglesia Ortodoxa, you could be referring to either the Greek Orthodox, the Coptic Orthodox, the Russian Orthodox, ect. I dunno if official reunification will happen during my lifetime, but unofficially it has already happened here. God bless Orthodoxy. Dios bendiga a la Ortodoxia.

I am Russian Orthodox and I view all Orthodox Christians---Ethiopian, Georgian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Egyptian, Syrian, Romanian, Greek, Serbian, Eritrean, Montenegrin, etc---to be my brothers and sisters.
Unity would be nice, but I don't think the two (Eastern O. and Oriental O.) need to be politically/socially united to be truly united.
We are already culturally and spiritually united, God bearing their witness, and I think that's what really matters.
Things like politics are social constructions in this physical world that will disappear and hold ZERO relevance in the other world. Generally, while I think there is a difference in Christology between us, I still believe that we ought to be in communion. While we can schism all we want, as long as the views are somewhat coherent to true Orthodoxy there is no real reason to. It just weakens the Church as a whole

@@alankoshy1389 The argument lies in whether or not the union which is taught allows each nature to have its own separate and independent existence, or whether, as Cyril of Alexandria teaches, we confess a union in which these real and different natures are united such that Christ is One, even as the Nicene Creed professes.
This independent diversity is what we should reject. Not the fact of the diversity of the natures, the humanity and Divinity, which are completely other and different from each other. The heart of our Christology, indeed of our Orthodox Christology, is that these two distinct and different natures have been united in a union that has no division even whilst their is no confusion.
We do not refuse to confess the difference, God forbid! But we flee from this, that we should divide the one Christ in a duality of natures after the union. For if he is divided, the properties of each one of the natures are divided at the same time with him, and what is its own will cling to each one of them. But when a hypostatic union is professed, of which the fulfilment is that from two there is one Christ without confusion, one person, one hypostasis, one nature belonging to the Word incarnate.
It is a hypostatic union that ensures the real union of these different natures. This passage makes clear that firstly, a hypostatic union does not introduce confusion between the humanity and the Divinity; secondly, that 'one nature belonging to the Word incarnate' does not mean either a confused divine/human nature nor does it mean that the humanity is swallowed up by the Divinity; thirdly, the passage makes plain that the union is one in which the different natures have their differences preserved but within one concrete existence, that of the Incarnate Christ, and not preserved independently as the Son of God and a man united in some external manner.
The 'duality of natures' which is rejected is not the reality of the humanity and Divinity, but a division between them which destroys the union and which makes One Christ of the two without confusion.When we anathematise those who say Emmanuel has two natures after the union, and speak of the activities and properties of these, we are not saying this as subjecting to anathema the fact of, or naming, natures, or activities, or properties, but speaking of two natures after the union, and because consequently those natures...are divided completely and in everything.

I really appreciate this presentation. I am just orthodox Christian, here in the Appalachian Baptist world. There is a Coptic Orthodox Church in Roanoke and I never understood the reason why we weren’t in communion with them. Our church is in the Bulgarian patriarchate and we have zero Bulgarian members. I am glad to learn that contemplation of these matters is above my pay grade.

As a member of Indian Oriental Orthodox Church, I love my Church’s liturgy and traditions and proud of it. I know there would always remain differences among different Churches due to our egos and politics.But, in the end we Christians should remain united in our faith in the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, One True God, as Saint Paul had told us and should avoid fighting among us. Honestly as a Catholic convert from protestantism all the schisms sadden me. We (orthodox, oriental and Catholic) all have so much in common we should come together at the very least in the area of accepting each other sacraments as valid and allowed to be shared if needed.
This was very interesting to watch as a western person who converted from Roman Catholicism (Chalcedonian) to Orthodoxy in the Coptic Orthodox Church (non-Chalcedonian). Let me preface that I was raised in a Lucifarian cult that presents as Biblical Christianity. I rejected the cult at 21 yo. I tried to go Atheist because I hated Christianity as I understood it. Then through a Damascas Road type experience, converted to Christianity. I started my walk with my Lord in the modern charismatic movement after a very brief time in Pentecostalism, just long enough to recieve the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with evidenced by Speaking in Tongue's, something that has benefited my personal walk greatly.
The Roman Catholic church in it's excesses is way too off base for me but I have been attracted to the Eastern Orthodox expressions, Greek, Russian, etc. It seems to be far more true to the simple gospel of Christ, I like that there are both monastic and married priests allowing for ones relationship with God to set the boundaries of service.
I am also interested in gaining a better understanding of the Ethiopian and Coptic expressions of Christianity.
This series is going to be interesting and helpfull.

I think with the roman catholic churches problems they are having right now I dont see it happening. They really need to clean up thier act. They all split for a reason and that is the corruption of the roman catholic church. After the Borgias it really started going down hill and they were never able to bounce back. Every time I run across Eastern Orthodox people who continually call the Oriental Orthodox by the term, "Non-Chalcedonians," and they don't really get just how nails-on-a-chalkboard aggravating it is, then I start constantly referring to the EO as, "You Non-Florentines." Then, usually the light-bulb of realization and aggravation goes off in their own eyes, and they stop.

While we didn’t establish a church prior to Coptics, Ethiopia was and is historically known as the First Christian Kingdom and Civilization (Reference: Prophecy Psalms 72: 9-10 along with multiple Church sources shows that one of the three wise man has been confirmed Ethiopian, Acts 8 shows Christianity teaching existed in Ethiopia and Aksum Kingdom predates back to BC showing traces of Christianity prior to Armenian Church). And so while we the EOTC are labeled “oriental” with our sister churches, we are the only orthodox nation who incorporate 4000 year old Jewish customs (Judeo-Christianity) and Jewish forms of worship and tradition into our faith. The reason for this is because we were the only Orthodox country to convert from Christianity’s former faith so we hold very sacred information or the “original link” that drives our Christian faith to be more conservative or allows us to have more divine levels of worship (Ark Processions year round, Hymnaries (Mahlet), (Horologions (Sa’tat), Subae (7 days of no food or water), Year round Full Body Holy Water Services, all white clothing, shoeless entry, restraining from unclean meat and 292 days of fasting to name a few all makes our orthodoxy unique different and special in every way compared to all other oriental and eastern orthodoxies but most importantly and evidently seen is our love of Saint Mary. Ethiopia is in fact called the Land of Mary.

So for those that came from pagen faiths Paul and Timothy (1 Timothy 4:1-5 are seen easing the burden on “gentiles”
In Acts 15 and 1 Cor 10 - Paul says Since you are gentiles (did not come from Jewish faith) I will be more lenient with you he teaches.
But for those who come from Jewish backgrounds such as Ethiopians and Israelites it is a sin.
It is like the same situation with Samson in Judges 13:5,7- “For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall *be a Nazarite* to God from the womb... 7...drink no wine or similar drink...”
So if the Israelites cut their hair and drink alcohol it WILL NOT be a sin but if a Nazarite does these things it WILL BE a sin. The same with pork for Israelites and Ethiopians it is a sin for us but for those who came out of pagen or gentile ways it is not.
So if you have to eat pork, put up Christmas trees, have Easter egg huntings, have modern-like instruments in church then _you might_ be able to justify these foreign ways of practice to be included in your faith with this verse and verses similar to being lenient on gentiles.

But if you prefer not to then of course there are verses like Isaiah 66:15-18 and Jeremiah 10:2-4 for example that teach us to steer away from foreign practices and pork.
But as for us Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, these are all sins especially eating pork.
Look at the prophecy in Isaiah 66: 15-17
It says on the day Jesus comes with fire and His chariots (second coming) those found eating swine flesh will be judged.
So if it’s not okay when Christ comes again why would it be okay now?
You can read any trusted theological commentary on Isaiah 66 it refers clearly to the second coming.
However for non Jews this does not apply.

When the Bible prohibits one and accepts the same thing that means it applies to a special case.
For example lying, is prohibited but God tells Abraham to lie so his wife won’t get raped.
Killing is not allowed but God accepts the death penalty as well. Reference: Genesis 9:6
I would suggest being a holistic Biblical reader rather than just cherry picking a verse.
The politics matter more than theology in the history here. The Syriac (aka Oriental) churches spread rapidly across central Asia, to China. It was them who built the Christian pagodas, two of which still survive. They also became established in India. The point is that they were largely outside the Roman empire and beyond its control. What counts here is the Eastern empire, of course, not the Western element which collapsed and devolved into a European power structure. The Eastern Orthodox church, in contrast, was mostly withing and firmly under the control of, the empire, run from Constantinople. They could not have rejected Chalcedon even if they had wanted to.

I am from India, being a member of the ancient Malankara Orthodox Church that is believed to be founded by St. Thomas, the Apostle in AD 52 We are still called St. Thomas christians or Nasranis, by Hindus, the majority community. Our church is one of the six oriental orthodox churches mentioned in this article. It seems like the author is from the eastern orthodox churches I am glad that he has somewhat extensivelly postulated the schism and theological differences among the various denominations. Everything was sunny and serene until the Chalcedon general council. Admittedly, all the first three councils of the universal church were generally accepted by one and all. Differences reared its head regarding the nature of Christ St. Cyril of Alexandria believed that c Christ, the Incarnate Logos, is of two natures rolled into one, that is, the unique nature of hundred percent God and hundred percent human. The others inthe Council contested this view They declared that Christ was in two separated natures The former is called monophysists and the latter, diaphysists. Andthey parted ways. It issaid, beyondtheological defferences, there is more to it There were four Patriarchates in the universal church namely Rome, Alexandria Constantinople and Antioch in that order of precedence But at Calcedon, Constantinople, being the emperor's eastern capital was given preference over Alexandria. This caused a furore and the two groups were mutally excommunicated. In my opinion, th dispute e over the nature of Christ oi is preposterous. For Nothing is impossible for God Almighty. He can be in two natures or of twonatures as He wills because we firmly believe that our Lord is hundred percent God and hundred per cent human. As for the unification of these two groups, sharing of Holy Communion, not amalgamation, is the need of the hour !
If your Malankara Church was founded by the Apostle Thomas in AD52 it wouldn't be part of any of the Orthodox churches discussed in this video because the schisms happened after AD500. Either you are believing a nonsense tale or this man in the video is wrong.

Sadly a bit of semantics and a bit of lack of patience ended in that division between the Orthodox Churches. What is particularly sad is that the Armenian Orthodox Church couldn't even attend the Council of Chalcedon because they were literally having a huge war against Persia at the time where many of their people died in a huge battle so they were seen as not knowing true Christology which was unfair because Armenia is the first full Christian nation in history. But we must remember that the strength of Orthodoxy is the diversity as well.

We Oriental Orthodox fear the separations of Jesus Christ in two since Jesus Christ can't be divided. He is united divinity and humanity with out mix without divide. But we afraid the other explanation to lead to a way of heretical thinking like the body of Christ as avatar.

I love the content of this channel. Haven't seen a video on it, will you ever review the history of seperate Churches from the Council of Nicaea and back? Mainly I'm curious about the Assyrian Church of the East (Nestorian) but also all the minor divisions before that point, Celtic chuches, the Arian churches, ect. What ended up happening to them?
The Assyrian Church of the East split off from the roman Orthodox over the "nestorian" controversy officially, really because the Persians were persecuting some because they were seen as Roman Empire spies.
The Assyrian Church of the East expanded thru Central Asia and into Mongolia, China and there are signs it was in Japan; also it spread into India especially S. India and Ceylon where it may have joined the Thomas Church. By 700 AD or 800 AD it was claimed to be bigger then either the roman Orthodox/Catholic, or the Arian Heretic Barbarians, or the Oriental Orthodox/Coptic churches in population.
But then centuries of persecution by Chinese Legalistic Taoist and Buddhist Emperors who hated foreigners, by Hinduism which was becoming more militant and taking over India, by Manicheanism in Central Asia, by Muslims [especially Tamerlane], and then with plagues and the Mongol disaster - all made the Assyrian Church of the East go into hiding and reduced the numbers.
Still, when Catholic Portuguese came to India and China they recognized there were still some "heretics" there.
The Indian branch known as the Thomas church went into the Catholic i heard. The Chinese may have morphed into the Chinese House churches in Communist China. And in Iran and Iraq there were some left in the old churches in the 1970s - don't know if they have left.
@@tommy-er6hh Yes much of what you say is my understanding of that Church's history. Only thing to add from my understanding is that after European contact the St Thomas Churches of Kerala lost contact with the Assyrian church and Split roughly along original St Thomas, Catholic influenced, and Protestant influenced lines. Similarly, the Assyrian church in Northern Iraq and Iran at first became a hereditary church (leadership for their "pope" was in the same family) post contraction and then over the following centuries split along the original Assyrian, Orthodox influenced, and Catholic influenced (Chaldean church). The Original Church of the East still survives in Northern Iraq but is now a purely ethnic church that has shrunk due to the violent recent decades and actually has way more members with Assyrians in the USA and elsewhere than in their native land.
@@tommy-er6hh The Thomas Christians are still there in India. They were never persecuted by Hindus but sadly only by Portuguese Catholics. The followers of Nestorius left the Roman Empire and settled in the Persian Empire. The church grew in the Persian Empire and spread eastwards.
The Assyrian Church of the East, AKA "the Nestorians," follow the doctrine of the Greek Ecumenical Patriarch Nestorius who was condemned by the 3rd Ecumenical Council in AD 431 but rather than repent fled to the east where he would be sheltered by the Zoroastrian Persians. (A number of Christian heretics set up operations within Persian ruled areas, as did many Jews, and this religious "stew" set the stage for the emergence of Islam.) The Assyrians were in communion with Constantinople and the other Patriarchates (including the Roman patriarch of course) prior to the fifth century. None of the Ante Nicene groups (Arians, Gnostics, Montanists, Marcionites, Donatists, a few more) exist any more. The only Ante Nicene groups that still survive are, going west to east, the Roman Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox, the Monophysites, and the Nestorians.

All this division is why my faith is all sorts of lost. Also, I just can’t imagine Jesus Christ saying, “which side of the Orthodox Church were you a part of?” when He comes back 🤷🏾♀️

I heard somewhere that a number of different churches are divisions of where the Apostles went, such as the majority of the church of India was started by Thomas, and the Coptic church (Egypt) was started by Mark. Do you have a video where you discuss this with more clarity and detail? (and correct me if I'm wrong...?)

I as an EOTC believer hope we agree on the Dogmatic issues first then the canonical part will come later...This needs a great prayer in both sides and very detailed discussion about The Chalcedon council....and minor error the EOTC alone has 65-75 Million members....

*Explanation:*
While we didn’t establish a church prior to Coptics, Ethiopia was and is historically known as the First Christian Kingdom and Civilization (Reference: Prophecy Psalms 72: 9-10 along with multiple Church sources shows that one of the three wise man has been confirmed Ethiopian, Acts 8 shows Christianity teaching existed in Ethiopia and Aksum Kingdom predates back to BC showing traces of Christianity prior to Armenian Church). And so while we the EOTC are labeled “oriental” with our sister churches, we are the only orthodox nation who incorporate 4000 year old Jewish customs (Judeo-Christianity) and Jewish forms of worship and tradition into our faith. The reason for this is because we were the only Orthodox country to convert from Christianity’s former faith so we hold very sacred information or the “original link” that drives our Christian faith to be more conservative or allows us to have more divine levels of worship (Ark Processions year round, Hymnaries (Mahlet), (Horologions (Sa’tat), Subae (7 days of no food or water), Year round Full Body Holy Water Services, all white clothing, shoeless entry, restraining from unclean meat and 292 days of fasting to name a few all makes our orthodoxy unique different and special in every way compared to all other oriental and eastern orthodoxies but most importantly and evidently seen is our love of Saint Mary. Ethiopia is in fact called the Land of Mary.

The theological differences and arguments are all such nonsense, but the history lessons in this program are excellent quality
Regarding the places of which people ought be bishops between Oriental and Eastern Orthodoxy, I say there are two solutions: either separate the Church into separate and equally autosephalus rites like the Catholics, or to ask current bishops to retire, and appoint NEW bishops by councils equally made up of Eastern and Oriental clergymen.

In the 20th century, a number of dialogues have occurred between the Oriental Orthodox and the Chalcedonian Orthodox which revealed that both communions now share a common Christology with differing terminology. As yet, full communion has not been restored. There have also been some agreed Christological statements issued in conjunction with the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox (Chalcedonian) family (Ecumenical Patriarchate and official representatives of other Eastern Orthodox Churches) [1].
There are activists on both sides who *pretend* to share a common Christology with differing terminology. This has never been true historically (and attempts backed by the Emperor were made in ancient times to find a compromise formula to no avail), and I doubt that it has suddenly become true today. Ecumenists in Eastern and Western Christendom all use the same rhetorical tricks to pursue organizational union or inter communion without authentic doctrinal agreement. Persons of integrity in all of our confessions should resist this trickery.
I am from Ethiopia which holds about 70% Oreintal church believers. I pray for unity.

I can confirm from first hand personal knowledge that here in the US, OOs are being communed in at least some EO parishes. And I have heard anecdotally that there have been instances of EOs being communed in OO parishes. There is not yet concelebration between clergy. But at least in some jurisdictions at the parish level, the people and clergy have decided that there is not enough dividing us to justify refusing the chalice. And I am pretty sure that this is being done with a nod and wink from the bishops.

In parts you seem to suggest that there was a schism between the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches as if there was already a single body of 'Orthodox' churches (as distinct from a western church). This is simply not correct and although you often 'snap' back with a more correct description of events, the emphasis is all wrong leaving that impression. The second council of Chalcedon actually led to a split between the these 'Oriental' churches and the rest of the, as yet undivided, church that would later split into Orthodox or Catholic. It was not an 'intra-Orthodox' split.
From the Orthodox perspective, it was an Orthodox Split. As you say, the churches were all together at the time. There was the oriental Churches, and there were the rest of the Orthodox Churches (Which included those who would later be divided into EO and Catholic). All of Orthodoxy would say that all the churches at that time were in fact Orthodox.
@@ReadyToHarvest Yes - the point being that the 'Oriental' churches split from the one church (a universal Orthodox one ... Holy, Apostolic Catholic). It was not a squabble;e within some 'Orthodox' church that the western church beheld as an outsider.

All Catholics and all related and protestant denominations simply can't get out of their had that Orthodox church did not split from Catholic church, also, they simply do not understand that THE church divided. I guess it's because Catholic church divided into all these sects like Lutherans Calvinists Presbyterians who not, them can't understand that it would be closer to truth that Roman church separated from the authentic church.

I was raised and baptized as a Southern Baptist and then became a Roman Catholic in college until I became a communicant of Orthodoxy. I have to say that my sojourn in the above branches of Christianity gives me some authority when I say that your videos on all three of these branches are absolutely spot on!

pope leo and the byzantine emperor didnt like the church of alexandria.... because they are so much orthodox than other churches ....one nature formula is right ! it doesnt make jesus with (mixed natures) like euteches said... but one nature that is composed of 2 natures (human and divine) its the same we have body and soul...we have 2 natures... but we say : Human spirit which is a nature that composed of 2 natures ( body and soul) .... coptic church are so orthodox... but roma and Constantinople were jealous of the alexandrians.. I am Eeastern orthodox and read history pretty enough and seen by my own eyes the faith of the Egyptians! ... st Dioscorous is Not Wrong... Our church fathers at that time Are.... period

Agreed, I call it a witch-hunt. (I'm a convert to Coptic Orthodoxy from the Salvation Army, an offshoot of Methodism, which in turn is an offshoot of Anglicanism, which in turn is offshoot of Catholism.)
