    Hi Mike I love your videos. You are so kind to help us out. Last year I lost over 100 babies in that first freeze, I didn’t cover them or plant them with bark/leaves. This time, I’ll be more proactive. I did start them all summer long.
    I need to find the soil mix you suggest. I have a propagation table with misters. It’s addicting. I have an annabelle that I would like at least 30 plants from. We are planting a blueberry you-pick and I’d like to have these beauties at the beginning of every row.
    I have used sand, water, pond water and coconut.
    Thank you for all your help.

      Nope, and I love seeing that. It's so cool looking. I'm sure you have roots below the soil line as well. Once you acclimate them to less humidity, the roots above the soil line will probably dry out and wither away but the roots in the soil will take over.

    I have had better success with late summer cuttings than spring cuttings. The spring cuttings tend to rot easier, due to softness or it might be that Hormodin 3 is to strong. Last spring 8 out of 20 was fine. Just potted up 38 of 40 late summer cuttings. But I do agree that spring cuttings are better prepared for the winter. I will try next spring again and see if I get better luck next time. Love your videos by the way.

    Hello Mike! Your hydrangea rooted cuttings are looking great. My plants are looking good too. I tried some rose cuttings but they are not as successful as the hydrangeas. I am looking forward to creating a hydrangea hedge at the back of my property and it is possible because of your teaching how to propagate hydrangeas. Thank you!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 років тому +4

      The hedge idea sounds fantastic! I'd love to see pics when it's planted. That's what first got me going heavily into propagation. I wanted a hedge of the most beautiful rhododendrons that would stretch 330 foot along the front of my property. I always thought it would be neat for people to think I must be wealthy with all the landscaping but really it only cost a few bucks for potting soil, lol.

    • @LadyWisdomSpeaksAcademy
      @LadyWisdomSpeaksAcademy 6 років тому

      Yes. I would like to incorporate the rhododendrons into the hedge so that I can have the flowers in the spring and the hydrangeas in the summer/fall. I am not so confident with the rhododendrons so I might buy them from Home Depot. We shall see...

I cut them, like you show in your video, and they seem to be doing really well...(got them in my clear plastic container that is sealed and propogated them just like you have). Mike, I'm super-nervous about over-wintering my babies! I've had people suggest that I bury them in their pots, but is that a better option than just stashing them in my small shed for the winter?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 років тому +2

      Either method will work. You need to protect the roots. Another good way to do that is by 'heeling them in'. You can bury the pots in bark or leaves or anything else that will protect the roots. Also, protect the tops from harsh winter winds, they'll dry out your cuttings.

    @evanillasky 6 років тому

    is it possible to root cuttings in the fall inside the garage? I have a heating mat and plenty of humidity inside the container where my cuttings are. it has been 3 weeks now since I made the cuttings and there's plenty of moisture and condensation inside the container. also, the cuttings looks fresh as if I just inserted them there yesterday. I checked one out for riots but not a single root cn be seen.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 років тому

      It is possible but more difficult with some plants as they begin to harden off and hydrangea are one of them. There are plenty of plants that root well in the fall like broad leaf evergreens but they take a little longer to root and you generally won't see any action until about 6 weeks but it can take months. Bottom heat helps a lot. Sounds like you're on the right track, just keep experimenting and be patient.

      The plastic bins are just for rooting. Once they're out and potted up you should be able to leave them out through the winter and let them go dormant. I've got several videos about overwintering rooted cuttings. As long as your plants are cold hardy to your area then they should be fine.

      If it's a cold hardy variety for your area then all you need to do is protect the plants from drying winter winds, temperature fluctuations, and frost.
