Jon in the beginning: I don't think we should be so suspicious of this person, the evidence just isn't here Jon 25 minutes in: I wanna send this person to jail because they're annoying Absolute power corrupts absolutely it seems
10:25 I am just hitting my head against a wall here watching Jon completely miss the subtext of the chat conversation. THEYRE IN A RELATIONSHIP JON, THEYRE FLIRTING AND BEING COY WITH EACH OTHER.
Jon, you painted her as a manic depressive theif who sometimes doesn't take her meds and injured a police officer in a fit of rage. If you had selected the other option, "You hurt that officer to protect me," then it still would have proved she injured the officer but it would have been in defense of someone else. Whether or not Symes cares, I don't know. But it changes the story, I think.
"Finally a game where we get to be the bad guys in a dystopian nightmare!" ... "Better give her the benefit of the doubt, we'll just disable that for now..."
Jesus Dude, she was clearly joking around about the credit card, ffs man! lol And you weren't suppose to report it. See, YOU decide whats real to report and whats just trash, the game will treat everything YOU deem real, as real.
It is fascinating hearing Jon circum-rationalize around Cassandra. Saying someone had the "grit and explosives" is clearly supportive of the act. The fact that her saying it demonstrated the futility of state surveillance is separate. And a pronounced dislike for the government is directly relevant. It's potential motive. Motive is one of the three core elements of criminal investigation. While alone it cannot convict, it certainly can demonstrate an underlying basis for action on that person's behalf. And the assertion that the individual who is willing to accept violence as acceptable in order to make a point, and clearly has bad impulse control and struggles with emotional issues is in a position to be a greater general threat. The entire point of security in this kind of context is to weed out threats in descending order of danger and obviousness. If there was more info on Abraham Goldfels, I'd also say look more closely at him, as he seems distinctly more dedicated to the cause. All that said: Cassandra was acting in self defence if her friend is to be believed, so WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE CONDEMNING DATACHUNK INSTEAD OF THE MITIGATING ONE JON?
PirateGhost In any nation with a normal court she would be put on trial with a re-opened case based specifically on her ADMISSION. Not what her friend said. Her friend would be brought in as a witness to testify, maybe even counter charge the officer for assault. Then again it's a dystopian authoritarian regime so she'll get arrested and convicted regardless, probably. The nation is like Russia if Stalinist Communism worked out and made a better economy.
So basically Cassandra threw away her life of good friends, a good job, and a financially stable family, to become an edgy artist living off of her parents' lawyer and burning all of her bridges.
The standard-issue District of Columbia license plate bears the phrase, "Taxation Without Representation". That is specifically to highlight that DC (our nation's capital) does not have voting representation in the House nor the Senate. The District of Columbia has actually petitioned Queen Elizabeth II to repatriation. Moreover, the US Congress routinely overrides the DC government, so that the city lacks funds or authority to afford silly little things like hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, or the prison. The mentally ill were just kicked out on the street (even the violent ones!) and the prisoners were relocated to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. So, yes, DC is a nightmarish dystopia that also has a Freedom Plaza.
10:20: Seems like a lot of those questions would be answered easily if we assume Josef is her "darling". Which is supported by things like casually borrowing his credit card, picking up wine, and being asked how she'll tell her parents about them.
JON. You're in an authoritarian dystopia. "Oh, well that's just a fact" is not how the people who actually go arrest someone look at things. If you add it to her dossier, I imagine they are assuming you are telling them it's relevant to her guilt. Try to think about how other people are going to perceive and use the info you collect. And maybe don't leave out details like she attacked someone who was attacking her friend, which is a tad more relevant than she happens to take anti-depressants.
I think that's what makes this game so interesting. You're not just gathering info, you're painting a picture of the suspect, and it's the only picture which the prosecutors can see
Sometimes when making decisions you seem to miss the impact of the context the details can have in framing perception of the suspect. Example: Gory details of bashing the skull in of a father of children sounds a lot worse than justifiable manslaughter to save a friend from an assailant. Neither one is a fair reporting of the facts, they are both partial lies of omission.
Wow. You really figured out how to run a dystopia pretty quick, nine minutes in and you are using a woman's conversation out of context to attempt to arrest her. Nice. Very Big Brother.
This might be my favorite video of yours yet. Listening to you logic (can I use that as a verb?) your way through all the information, while I sort of play along at home was massively entertaining. I'm very much looking forward to more of this.
Jon is really bad at this. This starting case is about an act of terrorism against a government. A suspect opposing the government is definitely relevant to this case.
But huge numbers might oppose the Government. In the UK, barely 40% of people vote for the Government in power. If there's a terrorist attack, you can't start with the 60% and start eliminating from there - it's massively too broad a starting set...
Many A True Nerd I mean it's not about her not voting. It's about her openly saying that she despises the government. Which means she fits the profile of a radical terrorist that you're trying to find
The game's called "Orwell" and we all know the Party in 1984 twists the truth to silence those against the Party. So just target anti-government people.
For a second I actually thought you were referencing Face*book* here :D Then I remembered that 1984 exists, and it's one of the few books I read twice.
It's frustrating how quick Jon is to discredit Orwell & The Nation. It's obvious he walked in to the game believing he's playing the bad guy & seems like he's just refusing to accept potential leads because of personal beliefs rather than objectivity which is weird since there were multiple datachunks he included just because they were facts that weren't really relevant..
32:24 ...Jon, you're kinda a monster, huh? You essentially sentenced a woman to imprisonment in a dystopian society by deliberately (or obliviously) taking the things she said out of context in order to make her look more guilty. Like, it's outright said that she defended her friend from that officer, showed clear remorse for her actions, and has been just trying to get on with her life. I mean, you kinda got into the "evil dystopian secret police" role really quickly.
redknight3996 she assulted a police officer, which is plenty of justification for her to go to trial. whether or not there are mitigating factors can be decided there
She already went to trial and was released due to lack of evidence. This is her being under suspicion of bombing a plaza. Also, dystopian society. They might convict her just to look like they've solved the case, and typically people in this sort of genre who get "convicted" go to torture camps.
Or take a quiet forever nap with a hole in the back of the head in some ditch somewhere. Like in Orwell they get made exampled of by "admitting" their "crimes" then disappear. Just think of China.
Even if it was to defend her friend, she still assaulted an Officer. We don't know what the Officer was going to do, so she should still be retried with this new evidence and let the full story be told. She can bring her friend up to tell the court why she did it, but that doesn't change the fact she hospitalized someone. I think Jon made the right choice, in this situation.
About the freedom Plaza thing. If you have place like that either you are in a cheesy superhero world or a dystopia. Either way the chance of dying is roughly the same
I've played the game before, and the best thing about it is that the plot can fork in different directions depending on the player, giving a half-dozen different endings. Your decisions matter!
I mean, the game is called Orwell, but it's painfully obvious that the Deva haven't actually read 1984. They probably claim to have done so to their friends, as well.
exactly, the game is called 'orwell' - not '1984' ... it never claimed to represent the society of 1984, but that probably doesn't matter to people who know exactly _one_ novel (or at least claim to) of an author who published hundreds of texts ... -.-
This actually looks rather interesting.. I may have to aquire it myself :) Thanks Jon for costing me yet more money on obscure Steam games I'd never have heard of otherwise damnit!
thanks for playing the more obscure games on steam. Really like this one, along with Jydge which you letsplayed a while ago :). So I guess on monday I'll add Orwell to steam :)
Jon, you have been ordered to HQ for a reeducational sessions concerning newspeak and doublethink. Please provide your ID when you arrive tomorrow at 09:00.
Ahh thx for showing this absolutely fantastic game! I saw the first 20 minutes of your video and I decided that I have to plax this. I finished it since. It's like Papers please but much less monotounos. I really enjoyed playing it altough I fucked up couple of times.
+cavecenam Didn't even know that, I was just thinking about the "Gold" part and the fact that they're both enemies of their respective dystopian surveillance states. Kudos to your application of linguistics though. Really helps to cement my theory.
+cavecenam I wonder what other similarities there might be? In 1984, I'm pretty sure that it became clear towards the end that Emmanuel Goldstein did not even exist. He was merely invented by the Party to focus the public's rage, justify the Party's actions, and draw out potential enemies of the state. Perhaps the higher levels of the government of "the Nation" in Orwell are engaging in a similar conspiracy? They could have perpetrated the bombings to justify their own policies and acquire even more power, and then pinned on Goldfels (who could very well be one of their agents) to provide a scapegoat. I think that storyline would be a bit cliche, but it would put the player in a very interesting position; they would either be told directly to cover it up or they would have to figure it out through bits and pieces of evidence (such as, for example, finding and submitting proof of Goldfels innocence, but then having it redacted from his case). They might even be threatened into silence, which would provide an interesting dilemma.
Kieran Saul Stein and fels is German. and where the plot will lead, we may see on this channel, maybe if enough people were upvoting our discussion here. 1984 was not directly subject in school for me but in philosophy we covered it.
"Suggests a relationship... Unless it's the cat" Hey, a cat is a sort of relationship. Poor Tabby :-( "If it's on the website then it's actually true" Oh Jon you have much to learn... ;-p I hope there's more of this sort of thing!
hey so I know this is off topic of this series but I enjoyed you playing "man o war corsair warhammer" I would like to see you play more of it. also more of this please! thanks Jon your the best I love your content!
Utopia and Dystopia are always in a Yin and Yang scenario, if the government watches people to prevent terrorism then that will lower the crime rate and help construct a great city, despite that being the biggest part of a dystopia

Jon do you know any good places to get coffee pots in fallout new vegas? dont ask I need 2 coffee pots ive already check deadwind cavern, Megaton , and doc Mitchell's closet for them but I can't find any. I genuinely need them.
Jon in the beginning: I don't think we should be so suspicious of this person, the evidence just isn't here
Jon 25 minutes in: I wanna send this person to jail because they're annoying

He'd probably turn on population controls to prevent any sexting from taking place for the next decade because he's a NUMPTY!
To be fair, other playthroughs have made it abundantly clear that there was absolutely nothing there to corrupt. All power dues to MATN is enable.
17 minutes in: "I could run a dystopian government better than these idiots!"
10:25 I am just hitting my head against a wall here watching Jon completely miss the subtext of the chat conversation. THEYRE IN A RELATIONSHIP JON, THEYRE FLIRTING AND BEING COY WITH EACH OTHER.
I didn't get that. Claire laughed at me for missing it too :(
Awww I took me a while to get it to. We can be oblivious together :D
I suppose not every day can be a double pike-beam day.
Perception dump stat confirmed
freakymoejoe2 it is called let's player's syndrome
Jon, those two people were in a relationship. They were talking about doin' it.
He either completely misses the obvious, or spends too much time on little things like that. It's quite hilarious/frustrating XD
God bless his 0 perception
Euphemisms don't mix with a perception of 1
Jon just cant let anyone bone anymore...flipping snails all over again man.
Goddammit Jon. it was so obvious....
Jon, you painted her as a manic depressive theif who sometimes doesn't take her meds and injured a police officer in a fit of rage. Symes is actually a pretty nice person who would have been symathetic to her if Jon had told him that she was only defending someone else.
"I could run a dystopian government so better than those idiots" -Jon 2017
Priceless. :D
Will this go badly ORWELL?
I love you and hate you

Many A True Nerd I love you
You magnificent bastard!
"Finally a game where we get to be the bad guys in a dystopian nightmare!"
...
"Better give her the benefit of the doubt, we'll just disable that for now..."
I have a feeling that Jon will like his position, immediately call the rebels the bad guys and will fail to notice several key points.
Jesus Dude, she was clearly joking around about the credit card, ffs man! lol And you weren't suppose to report it. See, YOU decide whats real to report and whats just trash, the game will treat everything YOU deem real, as real.

'grit' sounds like she's supporting it, but 'futility' doesn't. if she sorted the act then she would call it evil rather than pointless.
and the fact that she loses her temper matters in the case of assult, but not due a premeditated bombing
Because Jon is an idiot. That has been confirmed multiple times. Perception is his dump stat, Wisdom is a 2nd...
The mitigating datachunk adds context. Jon needs to remember the adviser doesn't have access to all the data he does.
So basically Cassandra threw away her life of good friends, a good job, and a financially stable family, to become an edgy artist living off of her parents' lawyer and burning all of her bridges.
Jon! Y u no include the part about her DEFENDING HER FRIEND. MIGHT BE IMPORTANT, YOU KNOW?
"if your ever in the freedom plaza it means your in a nightmarish dystonia "

Oh no...
So the left was right?
You should be fine unless they rename the country to the people's democratic free republic of america.
I was just about to comment this

You can ... y'know ... NOT live in DC? It's not supposed to be a residential area.

Agreed! A good reminder too, to examine the pictures that others paint for us. Can't wait to see more of this.

Great Britant it's not proof of guilt, but yeah it's definitely relevant

I lost it when he changed the photo of the blue haired lady to the happy face. THAT'LL CHANGE THIS HORRIBLE DISTOPIA!
Nice to see my favorite book has a game...
I've been itching for more of this setting since I read it in grade 12 four years ago. I've been really meaning to give it another read. :D
Same, 1984, the importance of being earnest, and hamlet were the only books I could stand to read in high school
I enjoy the reference to Syme as well
For a second I actually thought you were referencing Face*book* here :D
Then I remembered that 1984 exists, and it's one of the few books I read twice.
Nic Milbrett 1984 was actually really great as a story, even if you disregard it's statements about authoritarianism and socialism
So when investigating a terrorist attack, a suspect who is flipping opposing the government has no relevance? :O
Wondering if Jon realizes the 'clocks striking 13' was a reference to 1984.
First time I've heard Jon say "flip" in a long time.
It's incredibly fun how naive you are. I wanna keep seeing you play that.
Part of why this is so frustrating is how Jon acts like he knows what he's doing when he's clearly not.
Those two minutes with Cassandra and Josef was just "man doesn't understand relationships, thinks they're plotting against the government."
I didn't realise there was a game based 2018 Britain already.

WOOOO!!! A game where you ARE the -bad- good guys!!
Remember:... We are the good guys!
I love your youtube channel. Was kinda strange at first, but now i'm subbing!
I've played the game before, and the best thing about it is that the plot can fork in different directions depending on the player, giving a half-dozen different endings. Your decisions matter!
I am not surprised jon does not understand the concept of flirting...
It's a bomb Jon. She doesn't need to be there in order for it to go off, that's one of the two primary advantages of a bomb
It's our future better get use to screens/ cameras in ours rooms, and start writing our thoughts into red journals
I mean, the game is called Orwell, but it's painfully obvious that the Deva haven't actually read 1984. They probably claim to have done so to their friends, as well.

+ 1 perception Jon, because I don't believe you get enough of them.
Will you show us your egg yolks at 300k?
Are the egg yokes a part of him? I thought he was just the carton, and that's why it wasn't self-cannibalism for him to use eggs in recipes.
Kieran Saul only Cheesus knows my son
I only just realised how many subs Jon has! I thought it was into 700k
Cheese us, christ!
A clock showing 13 is completely fine or not, depends on the way the clock is marking time.
Is it all brits that don't understand subtext in a conversation, or is this perception - 0?
Definitely the latter, the rest of us Brits definitely got the endless euphemisms!

Please do a few more videos on this Jon, I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far... wonderfully interesting
This actually looks rather interesting.. I may have to aquire it myself :) Thanks Jon for costing me yet more money on obscure Steam games I'd never have heard of otherwise damnit!
Please do more of this!
This reminds me of that video Tom Scott made a while ago.
thanks for playing the more obscure games on steam. Really like this one, along with Jydge which you letsplayed a while ago :). So I guess on monday I'll add Orwell to steam :)
Play Some More, I Really Enjoyed Watching You Play This Game!
I wanna say there's a Freedom Plaza or something similar in the U.S. It's the sort of uncreative name that we like to name things nowadays.
was just in class discussing george orwell and 1984
spooky
Will be buying this, looks really good.
Hopefully there is a large amount of cases.
After having played through this game, I quite like the orwell system
YES! I love this game. I played it once and didn't feel like it was appropriate to replay it. Great to see Jon take a look at it!
I played the absolute rubbish out of this game and I'm still trying to get all the endings.
Love it.
this reminds me of "We Happy Few" Very awesome game. Jon, please try that game!
Is 'Goldfels' a reference to Emmanuel Goldstein, the principle enemy of the state from George Orwell's 1984?
Kieran Saul while "stein" means stone, and "fels" rock. well yes. that seems quite the same, does it? a rock is just a bigger stone
+cavecenam
Didn't even know that, I was just thinking about the "Gold" part and the fact that they're both enemies of their respective dystopian surveillance states. Kudos to your application of linguistics though. Really helps to cement my theory.
+cavecenam
I wonder what other similarities there might be? In 1984, I'm pretty sure that it became clear towards the end that Emmanuel Goldstein did not even exist. He was merely invented by the Party to focus the public's rage, justify the Party's actions, and draw out potential enemies of the state.

Why did I think you had already played this game? I have it on my steam wishlist, and very rarely do I actually stumble upon a game by myself.
Jon actually had some perception in this video wow
how is her saying fuck the government not relevant? She's being charged with fucking terrorism
This actually looks awesome. Sorta a 'researching a topic' game. Cool!
Jon sees the couple arguing and just says she's a brat without context at all
Thank you. I really wanted to see you play this
I want to keep watching but I also want to play Orwell, should I watch Part 2 and then play, or play and then watch Part 2?
This is a wonderful game; looking forward to the commentary.
Please play more of this!
"Suggests a relationship... Unless it's the cat" Hey, a cat is a sort of relationship. Poor Tabby :-(
"If it's on the website then it's actually true" Oh Jon you have much to learn... ;-p
I hope there's more of this sort of thing!
How knew working for Big Bro is so interesting.
"The clocks were stricking Thirteen" is like the second line of 1984
Like the book that inspired this game. The book by Orwell.
This game reminds me of Her Story as you have to work everything out yourself.
This reminds me of that Tom Scott video about that hypothetical dystopia.
hey so I know this is off topic of this series but I enjoyed you playing "man o war corsair warhammer" I would like to see you play more of it. also more of this please! thanks Jon your the best I love your content!
Just found your channel, I love it, subscribed :)
This game brings back memories of "beholder"
Ah classic Jon overthinking everything.
MORE AND THEN SOME MORE PLEASE
I would like to see a series of this to be honest :P quite interesting
i love the book 1984, symes was in this just the same as 1984
Three people killed, five severely injured
"Lovely"

Oh wow, they made a UK government simulator, looks great and very realistic.
Jon, play more of this.
I don't think Jons read 1984, the only reference we picked up was the Orwell one.
I like the 1984 Symes reference. But he's not enough of a smart ass
I'm would be fine living in Jon's dystopian country.
I bought this the day it comes out, I have 700 hours on it so far....
Keep doing stuff like this, Jon. Love hearing your political analyses and you out-dystopian-governing the game at times; beautiful.
An alternative name for this game is "London 2017"
"if your ever in the freedom plaza it means your in a nightmarish dystopia "
