Great breakdown, Nitt! This one was an anime tie-in (ED for Kengan Ashura), but it always amazes me how well they are able to create a rockin' and creative song, while also integrating the anime themes and writing it so that it can be cut down to 90 seconds. For these types of commissions, Miku always does her homework: she reads the manga, makes sure the lyrics generally vibe with it, then sprikles her own magic pigeon dust on it to make it really shine.
You can always tell when Band-Maid does a video in the freezing winter. I imagine the label calls Miku and tells her they need shoot a video outside or in an industrial building. She tells them no, too cold, too cold. The label tells her we will have fire and/ or explosions. She replies ok, see you first thing in morning.
Bandmaid deserves this quality of reaction and analysis! I called it in your first or second reaction ~ I said then you had the ability to be one of the greatest youtube reactors around! This was one of the best analysis of a BandMaid tune I've ever seen. I'll never hear this song the same old way again! Thank you NittPicc! What an amazing band!!
I think that chromatic is kind of what people said about The Beatles always sticking Three Blind Mice into their songs constantly. I always feel like there's a circus theme put into a lot of her compositions if you listen carefully. Maybe it goes back to some of their old live openings where there really was a circus-like opening. Maybe it's just me. Misa is incredibly melodic compared to most bass players, not just rhythm but so much actual melody. I don't know if she's better than everybody else but it's her ability to blend so many styles and yet carry the melody all the way through. She started on guitar so it may have something to do with that but whatever it is it's like have a lead guitar playing constantly only it's a bass. She and Kanami create quite the dynamic duo. The fact they all somehow got together and made a band like this is really kind of a miracle. If you took any of them away they would no longer be Band Maid, I hope they never break up or have anything bad happen to any member. Best rock band on the planet.
They dropped this song right before their Lollapalooza performance, and I associate it with that time. Best 24 hours ever. Saw them at the midnight show the night before at Park West Chicago, then stayed at a downtown hotel and went to Lolla with a buddy the next day to see them again. That was also my birthday, and was four days before I retired. Cloud nine! I also love it when they drop out to a beautiful vocal harmony section, almost a capella. It happens in Blooming too of course when the epic guitar solo goes off a cliff and leaves you floating in harmonies. This band does SO MANY cool things all at once - constantly - that you really MUST focus on one instrument at a time if you have any hope of catching everything. What a band!! Keep up the good work, NittPicc - maybe you can lobby for a guest flute solo appearance with the maids on a future song. I'd dig that. If King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Jethro Tull can do it, well - I mean, yeah.
That was a great weekend, I saw them for the first time in Minneapolis ("Mini-police" in pigeon speak) on Sunday. They were still high-energy even after the late-night show, then jamming out on the lakefront in 90 degree heat, and then the 6 hour drive to a sold out show in Minneapolis. I'm so glad that the ladies figured out how to pace themselves, especially Mincho. 🤘

@@Kevin6059 The closest I got (birthday) was seeing them on MISA's birthday in Otaru Japan. MISA's Magic Time! Yeah, MISA took over magic time! The band watched MISA while drinking Champagne. MISA was so shy it was really sweet, with Miku, hands on hips egging her on. The crowd loved it of course!
Wow, GREAT react and analysis - I never thought about the rhythm influencing so many parts of the song. The other thing I love you didn't happen to point out - how Saiki's voice fades out under Misa's intro of the solo bridge. It's so subtle but adds so much as the lead in from the second chorus. Just so much goodness!
I have added to my list of "rules of the universe". If fire is involved in a Band-Maid music video, the song is going to go hard.
The day this track was released Band Maid was in the middle of their U.S. tour. They closed their show in Sacramento with this track. There is a great fan cam, and the cameraman was totally infatuated with Saiki. I hope you come across it.

In that one part where Miku went from my left ear to my right ear, she told me that she had to do it again, because it was nice to fly around in such an uncluttered space.
When you look up the lyrics, "Kengan Asura" is about a fight club between corporations vying for power and influence. Each company has a champion and of course, there's lots of intrigue behind the scenes. The protagonist is a new champion of a shell company who navigates his way through the tournament.
I was at the live debut of Shambles, when they closed the Sacramento show with it. What a thrilling surprise! It was a perfect ending to an AMAZING show!

Saiki is great at using her voice as rhythm instrument. She uses the percussive onset of the language and adds a lot of dynamics, all with a great sense of time. The "pound cake" is ofter so thick that this doesn't stand out individually. She becomes part of the fabric of rhythm rather than sitting on top of it like most singers.

Great reaction. You brought out several elements of the song composition that I like but couldn’t put my finger on. It makes me appreciate their song writing even more - like how is that even possible?! I find these lyrics and those from their other songs very motivational and uplifting. They are able to play hard driving music but it’s filled with positive energy - in the lyrics, in the way they play, and how they interact with each other and the fans. They are just awesome! You are awesome too by the way!!!!
So glad you locked into that rhythmic motif! The best example of it is at the beginning of the second verse, just after the bass solo, when the Saiki/Misa/Akane trio all dance around each other, then lock in together with razor-sharp rhythmic precision when Saiki sings 'Subete uketome' (accept everything). Astonishing!
For me, I showed up for the music and I stayed because the lyrics. As a metal head most music I'd listen to would have vulgar words and speak about pain and trauma. which is a great way to release those feelings. but Band-Maid took a different route promoting self improvement. saying yeah things may suck now but YOU can change that, you have the power to do anything, you can make your future what you want. my life has improved greatly in the 4 years I have been listening to them, call it a coincidence 🤷♂
I get that! I really appreciate the lyrics in BM songs. They either make me feel like I can do better or I can keep pushing through hardships.

To help clarify the lyrics, the makers of the Netflix anime show, Kengan Ashura, asked BAND-MAID to write a jingle for their Season 2 outro and this song was the result. But judging from the song cover, we're just glad Mku didn't skip leg day!

It's a fighting anime, so the lyrics matches well with the anime. "Shambles" is one of a series of "It's so cold, fire is welcome" MV's. This song, along with "Warning" and "The non-fiction days" MV. Funny you should mention Maids on fire...as apparently two of the Maids had their coats catch on fire when warming up in between takes in "the non-fiction days" filming.😱 Anyway great reaction...now I need to go out and get me some pound cake right now! Yes, Shambles is the Akane show with special guest stars Kanami, MISA, Saiki and Miku. But wait! Was it really the Kanami show, because she wrote the song and played it with such forcefulness and exquisite abandon. Or was it the MISA show because without MISA, the rapturous drive of the song would be a ride on four flat tires. Or was it the Saiki show because she focused the sonic chaos into a song with melodies that could express Miku's lyrics like no other singer could. Without Saiki, Shambles might sound like a familiar instrumental. Or was it the Miku show because, damn, she wrote the lyrics, played the important rhythm parts, and added her unique brand of backup vocals that have become a defining "sixth instrument" of Band-Maid.
So exactly whose show was it? It was the Maid's show, as usual! 🤘🎀🤘Thx, Nitt Picc!

There is a 'making of' video of this on BM Prime. They filmed half a day then came back after lunch to find the studio floor flooded (to reflect the fire) and Saiki immediately blamed Miku for being clumsy. Miku argued it wasn't her but Mincho backed Saiki up blaming Miku! Then Mincho dropped her pick into the water and got disgusted 'I'm not using that on my guitar'. These ladies crack me up! There is a ton of 'making of' video's and a ton of one member covers (Akane wearing a head cam is a blast), plus hilarious skits and full live concerts. Well worth the money. Plus they add video's often.
The first lead-in to the chorus seems to have an odd time signature, and in true Band-Maid fashion, they went to a straight 4 sig for the second lead-in. The best harmonies since "PAGE" and "Blooming". Of course Miku's piggies flying in the beginning is awesome too.

And as always, there are some really funny moments and some touching moments in that making of video. Wanna know how close these ladies are? Misa and Kanami are enjoying some hot soup and Misa asks to borrow Kanami's chopsticks when she's done so she can get the vegetables in her soup. 😊🥰

The making of video on Band-Maid Prime is pretty funny. They start talking about Miku’s muscles, and she starts flexing and looks ridiculous.
There’s a good reddit thread with lyrics notes for this song. There are references to ancient Chinese essays and crap. Typical Miku insanity. She’s not just a pretty face on a mountain of muscle.
Of all the songs I've heard from the upcoming album, this is the best one.

Everyone wanted it, we (in Sac) finally got it. They kinda seemed like they weren't sure if that show should be the one, as I gather they were still rehearsing between shows to be able to play it live, but they went for it and nailed it. Absolutely ripped live, the crowd went nuts, amazing ending to the show.

Another anime song from Band-Maid. Hated the fact the played this for the first time at a concert at the concert after I saw them. Of course it didn’t sell out. Some tickets were very cheap ($2 anyone?) right before the show.

I posted recently in your blog video about the Lovebites show where I wanted to drive up from Austin but couldn’t make it this time, anyway if you like that song by Band-Maid maybe you could listen to a band I used to be with in Dallas called Big Iron. I was a guitar tech for my buddy Alapeno, maybe you have heard of Big Iron and a few shows I would play rhythm guitar for fun and sing, it was fun. We played a lot in Deep Ellum from the mid 1990’s to mid 2000’s. The last show Big Iron played was 2018 in Ft Worth at the Ridglea Metal Fest with our buddies from Drowning Pool and about 30 other bands. I was hoping that you could check out Big Iron with the video Someday where you can see me in the thumbnail and a few times in the video at Trees. Big Iron had two full length albums Tierra Del Diablo and Falling Down. Songs to check out:

I like how MISA takes over the hammer on/pull off riff that Kanami would normally play in the chorus. It keeps the song deep.

This song gets you so pumped up, it should have been the opening song.
Saiki's exhale at the very end was a mistake and she wanted it edited out, but the other members wanted to leave it in. She now does it for live performances.
My favorite version is the NHK live version, unfortunately, I think it's no longer on UA-cam.
There's only one thing better than listening to an awesome song and that's listening to someone give their take on how much goes into that awesome song.

Akane loves electronic drums, in fact she has asked Kanami for them on occasion (I guess the fact that she is a DJ has something to do with it). She doesn't take any breaks during this song, it's amazing!
Welcome home to the awesome Princess Nitt Picc, po! I hope you are having a wonderful day. I like angel food cake and pound cake, but I prefer anything chocolate. Akane wasn't getting much rest during this song, I don't know how she can keep up that pace for a 2 hour plus okyu-ji, much less for the 10th Anniversary finale for around 3 hours and 40+ minutes. That has to be like running a marathon. Please take very good care of yourself and have an amazing week. As always, I am looking forward to the next Band Maid Sunday.
As I mentioned before Nittpicc, Kanami and MISA take turns reinforcing Saiki. The bass moment you picked up on, during part of that she was playing the exact same notes as Saiki, giving her voice an extra dimension momentarily. Kanami was doing it earlier as you thought.
Whatever the ladies of Band Maid decide to do is GOLD! They always do something different and it WORKS. That is one reason they are the GREATEST of all time!! Great reaction …. Again!! I LOVE BAND MAID ❤❤

I remember when this premiered on UA-cam. It was a week or so before I got to go see them live for the first time. Several of my friends asked me if I thought they'd play the new song at the concert I was about to see and my response was "No way, I doubt they'd do something that cool."
Ultimately I ended up being at the second concert they played it live during. It was pretty awesome.
Band Maid is my constant companion. After 10 minutes of "news" I need 2 hours of Band Maid.

Saiki gave a heartfelt introduction before they played it during the live performance event during the lockdowns. And then she delivered one of her most goosebump worthy performances ever 🪿
Another Anime Theme Song commission, this is the season two closer for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura, an anime where big businesses settle who gets the best contracts by betting on cage matches.. But this video was another cold winters day and night's shoot in a open warehouse, and they could only ware their coats between shots. So the only time they were warm was when the flames were on, much like 'Non Fiction Days'.
Kanami loves cake ;) ... "Going back to the Present"? I think you may have invented a new movie franchise :p .
I often recommend Shambles as an introductory song to BAND MAID. The song was used as the Ending theme for "Kengan Asura" Season 2 ... but I don't think a lot of listeners see this as an anime song because it stands so well on its own. Make Shambles - Do it!
