Meet the nuns saving a sacred species from extinction - BBC News

- Conservationists from Chester Zoo have formed an unlikely partnership with an order of nuns - in a project that could save a Critically endangered amphibian from extinction.
The axolotl - a salamander that is unique to Mexico - has almost been wiped out of its freshwater habitat by pollution and over-fishing.
Now, scientists say that the nuns hold the key to bringing it back from the brink. Our science correspondent Victoria Gill has been to Mexico to visit this unique conservation convent.

I think this deserves more views. I own a Axolotl myself and they are adorable. I can't believe people would eat them and pollute their home
bebros2 bagel
😊💞
bebros2 bagel just like live sushi the human race never ceases to disgust me
I’d be fine with people eating them as long as they killed them humanely (and they weren’t near extinction), I only have a problem with people polluting their home though
Or hold them in captivity in a glass box in a shitty flat
It is because of you buying them there is a market for them aggg
For some reason I imagine the axolotl having a mexican accent, and being very charismatic. "Hello my friends, Buenos Dias!"
With his fabulous moustache, hat and guitar!
"Ándale, ándale, ándale"
Elwood Scott hahaha I see hahaha
Now I read the whole comment using mexican accent, thanks.
I think they probably speak Nahautl.
OK -- these guys need to be saved because they really are the cutest thing since puppies. These guys are the beagles if salamanderhood. Salamanderness.
The critters, not the nuns.
The nuns are *kind of* cute...
HJ Dawson agreed.
Wait, I think the nuns do have a cute resemblance to the axolotl. What's happening?
HJ Dawson it’s not about cuteness
HJ Dawson Axolotls commit cannibalism
Yes they look cute i agree 1.000.000% with you
Axolotl going extinct because of pollution? Those ladies will have Nun of that!
Rhyas9 did you just . . .
Rhyas9 get out
Rhyas9 sortxdxdrtgggfcfgdfdxdx
Oh nun you dident
These are not axolotls They are related tho.
this is the bbc news i like.
Big Black Cob
ian.. it's sad how the people who spill the biggest load of shit about Britain and all things British, are British themselves. Jewish? they're not - but why would you have a problem if they were?
You meant the "touchy-feely-goody" story?
I kinda agree, but that's it.
BBC® already completed more than enough of its "religious quota" by airing the Royal Wedding the globe over within a month.°
+Truth & Justice ...Now only if France24® could mistake the "Mohammadan" women for 'Jesus maids'?.. 😉
Maaz, well, I live in UK and I never saw even 1 second of the coverage, nor heard much about it except when it was going to happen. You didn't have to see any of it.
I hope they'll be saved. I have an axolotl and he's the cutest 💖 They really deserve more attention on their condition for things to change. I just wish there was a program allowing us to help.
OMGGG GARY!!!!!! YOU ARE A AXOLOTL LEGEND!!! Love ur channel Gary!!!!!
Is there no way to donate to the projects helping them 🤔? Ngl , soon as I heard they were endangered my heart sank, even started working out plans to go clean up the waters myself but I won't have the funds until 2025 😢 pray for the axolotls
Interesting, I never realized they were endangered, I know three people who have them as pets so I guess that's why I thought they were more common. Good on both the scientists and the nuns! :)
Carolyn S This rare species is in danger.
Axolotls are common in captivity yet endangered in the wild, like arowana. Sadly ironic. Though, most biologists consider species that are extinct in the wild yet common in captivity as already dead anyways.
They are technically critically endangered in the wild, but it is generally believe that they are extinct in the wild and stocked from breeding groups like this, because the government is trying to avoid criticism about why they did nothing
It is an extremely specialized creature that lives in only 1 lake where Mexico City is located in. Pollution kills axolotls and it is extremely rare to find some in the wild. Captive breeding will at least keep the species alive and well in the future.
Most of the ones in captivity aren't genetically pure. A large number of the Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) were hybridized with Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) for laboratory experiments before making it out to the public at large as pets. So the ones in this video actually are extremely rare.
Wow thank you! I love these little guys and I hope they’re going to make a comeback :)
I'm so glad to see action being taken and people working to conserve the species! I wrote a paper on them just a few months before this aired and they are truly amazing creatures
MOTHER?!? 💞
hahaha
😂😂😂😂
Berg Fish
XD
Berg Fish OMFG
You made my day hahahahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahhahahahahhahahahaha👍😂😂
So cute, what special little creatures.
Well done BBC really interesting video
bionicbert all heavenly Lord gaben have you sent these nuns from your summer sale to rescue our must beloved axlotl
Great video to see many aspects of human nature, faith, science, research, conservation, etc...good to learn something new. Though then reading comments you see the ignorance, racism and closed minded individuals who believe they are all knowing but not wise to know we don't know everything.
R PAZ exactly
Those axolotl must be so relieved to have found some solace in the conven tanks. Like a break from the random agression in the lake.
This is alarming. These cute Axolotl salamnder species are Extinct?! Need to save them.
AnobayanTeam Gonzales Endangered for now not extinct.
Vincent Cardona Technically just endangered but all the ones in the wild are stocked from breeders like this, it’s generally accepted that they are actually extinct in the wild
AnobayanTeam Gonzales I wonder how people would do if it was ugly.
I first heard this story very early this morning on my local NPR station. How wonderful to have this story also pop up in my UA-cam feed today! Good luck Axolotl!
Such a precious little thing ♥️♥️♥️
They have such adorable derpy stupid faces
no u
anna blue
Excuse Me?!!
Lol
Axolotls do not have stupid faces but you should get your eyes checked or better yet your looking in the mirror cause you have a stupid face. Don't talk about axolotls like that
@@Diablo-vr6wi Yes they do and thats what makes them cute.
They are beautiful
Tradition and science coming together to do good in the world! I love to see it.
Effective ongoing Axolotl species preservation must focus equally on habitat protection/restoration and breeding/release.
Renee S. So true. 16 axolotl species need our help.
You'll not be taken in serious unless you squeeze them to make magical cough syrup.
Pomo Dorino In a business perspective, they're doing good. Unlike in big conservation centers, the nuns don't have a events or shows where animals perform tricks and such to people who PAYED to see them so the nuns had to develop something so they could make money. That money will be used to buy food for the Axolotl they're caring for and to buy more equipments to further their goal. As an owner of an axolotl, its really hard to take care of them. They're a very sensitive bunch when it comes to pH levels and temperature. I can only imagine how hard it is to take care and breed a hundred of them for conservation purposes.
God bless them
The nuns are so cute! I want all of them as grandmas
Oh my god. This is such a beautiful piece of music. I am going to learn to play this.
La música ❤️
The best part of the video was when they took the DNA sample
In our local Wesselman’s Park/nature reserve thing they have a few of these axos to try and rehabilitate and keep them wet since it’s been so hot and everything.
They're so gorgeous aa
Those guys are so amazing for helping them
Axolotls are so adorable
"We're going to breed them in captivity so that if something happens to the lake and they become extinct we can release some into the lake and they be alive again"
I hope they plan on doing water purity measures before releasing them back into the lake...
The reason they're raising them in the convent is because the lake is too heavily polluted.
Am I the only one who find their faces adorable? 😍
I've always pictured those things wearing cute lil sombreros on their heads lol
Awesome! Support from australia
what a great docu !
Axolotl’s are my favorite animals thank you nuns 😘😘 god bless you
makes me so sad that so many people just don't give 2 cents about animals... we need to change otherwise it's just us humaan beings living on earth :(
It looks like the fish is smiling awwww xxx
Nice video! This is why I love BBC!! Subtitles where not the greatest... but nothing that cannot be improved...
I have an Axolotl and she very precious

@@tealeaf2407 as a Mexican I’m sad that the 2nd most iconic animal in Mexico is going extinct
2:30 and 3:19 it looks like Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. 🤣
Little wingless night furies
Good we need to save those things
Wow amazing thankyou
It so beautiful.
8:55 truest words ever spoken
they are adorable!
I have an axolotl that I raised since it was an egg and omg they are the cuties and most interesting creatures. It’s quite sad that they are going extinct!
They are too adorable to be extinct!! Please save them
I’ve little doubt that this species inspired the 1963 Outer Limits episode “Tourist Attraction.” (Btw if you love classic sci fi and don’t mind B&W and the rubber suited aliens and creatures, it’s worth every penny to get DVDs of both years of The OuterLimits. The writing is excellent. I think Roku has them all for free.)
Omg.. I. Love axolotls they're so cute.
i really love the idea of nuns taking care of endangered animals.
Poor axolotls i hope you live a long life
Such a sight to see Nuns doing laboratory work. It’s so refreshing. Kudos to the people trying to save this adorable species.
I love these boys
There is something very charming about axolotls 👾
I can buy axolotls in my local garden centre. They're lovely. Obviously they are not in nature but, there they are. They always have a few ready to be bought, taken home and looked after. :)
It's good when science and faith join forces for saving life on the planet.
Yes
Quality content 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
It is fantastic!
love this ❤
omg these critters are adorable, god bless these nuns!!
I want to hug them-
A specy with a strong regenerative ability (regenerates even heart). Yet on verge of extinction. So sad.
I own two axolotls and they are so much fun to have as pets ❤️
its like a fish n a frog merge
Definitely unexpected. Very cool!
Axolotls are my fave animals
I own 2 of these- and don't worry, I have both of them in good care. The big one is in a 20 gallon, and the little on is in a 10 ( for now) I feed the big one 4 pellets every day, and the small one 2 every day. They're adorable little aliens
I have some axolotl babies and love them
I want to see them pray
The cutest salamander
I will own one someday 😭 such precious creatures
Holy nuns.. 😘😘😘
I just started my own setup for axolotyl reproduction as well. I'm trying to help prevent extinction as well. I hope there are others out there on the same page. I'd hate to see these become extinct.
What part of the axolotl do they use for the medicine?
That is a really cute looking salamander.
A worth while segment from the BCC?!?! Hell must of frozen over!
Save the animals! they are our family!
What a beautifully made film, and what a incredible animal! Wow! Go nuns!
Dan Robinson but then they kill them for medicine?
My friends cousin bought a Axolotl from a reptile expo that was genetically modified to have 2 skin pigments that split down the middle of its body. One day its cloaca expanded to the size of its head and its organs exploded out of its body.
hm I wonder what they use from the axolotyls in the medicine...
Our book is based on research on the axolotl: Embryogenesis Explained, World Scientific Press
That’s awesome!
Thank you Jesus
oh my god I love axolotls
We must save them.
God bless the people.
Amazing animals with incomparable cuteness. Good work humans. Now, if the entire human race were as humanitarian and caring as these people, the world truly would be a better place. Sadly, we are human. Not possible for our entire species, sorry Mother Earth :( only some of us care.
I love axolotls
Our ancestor walking fish
Those aren't axolotls though, those are Lake Patzcuaro Salamanders. Axolotls live in Xochilmico. They are two different species, axolotls being Ambystoma Mexicanum, and achoques being Ambystoma Dumerilii.
I love axolotls ;w; I love them so much.
I love nuns!! And axolotls ! This is so cute
They are stewards of God's creation. 💖
I hope the achoque aren't being killed and used to make the syrup 😥
It is important we conserve less well known species as well
i saw one of those at the petstore...
