  • Dogs that have their activity restricted (are on crate rest) get bored, especially active dogs. Sometimes its too hot outside for active games. The best way to help them cope is to use their brains. The bonus is that they know some additional behaviors when they are ready for activity or the weather cools off.
Here is a list of links that will start you off in training the various behaviors.
Some are videos, some are links to training descriptions. Some have extra instructions below them.
Other simple activities are giving your dog a stuffed frozen bone or Kong or food puzzles. I would avoid 'bark and quiet' since the dog is confined and barking may become a default behavior when frustrated.
What other activities do you use? Add them in the comments below.

All of the various targeting behaviors are just variations of the nose target. Start with a few cued nose targets, drop the cue, then just slightly modify the position of you hand. Do this stages until you get a chin target. For the nose bridge, start back at the nose, and modify the position of your hand over the dog's nose until she pushes it between your index finger and thumb. For the loop target, start by having the dog target your hand with the loop held between the nose and your hand.
For the touch and hold, just add duration before clicking a nose touch, or ask for two and click the longest one.

Repeat with wood dumbbells and other objects that had not been recently handled.

Thanks Donna. My Gibbs just had total hip replacement, so these low/limited movement tricks will be a great distraction over the next few weeks!

I've done variations of "leave it" with dog lying down, progressing from item in my closed fist, open palm, on my knee, on the ground, on dog’s paw…all the way up his/her legs, etc. Also wave/paw, high 5s, high 10s (depending on dog's injury). Fabulous video as always! :-)

These are also great ways to exercise a senior dog's mind even if his or her body is beginning to fail. Thank you for the wonderful ideas!

This is amazing! Our dog suffered a broken pelvis after being hit by a car and will be on cage rest for the next 6 weeks. These are great activities that I will definitely be doing with her. Thanks!

Thanks Donna -all ideas gratefully appreciated after cruciate ligament tear in my older but very active terrier's left knee. We're looking at months of severely limited activity - trying to sort it out conservatively and without controversial surgery.

How's it going Jacquie? My dog's just done the same and am researching the non-surgical CM route initially.

Hello Ian, I'm very sorry to hear that - it's a long road to recovery no matter what option you take. My terrier cross is only 7kg and is 12yo so a good candidate for CM. The tear became acute a month before I was to move to Canada from the UK, so not ideal for calm confinement. In any case, we are now settled in Canada but the tear progressed to a full rupture. Took her to a highly recommended surgeon here who was fab - long story short, he did not pressure me into surgery. We decided to continue CM but have her undergo 'platelet rich plasma treatment'. She was injected directly into the joint capsule with her own plasma, put on anti-inflamatories and seems much more comfortable than before (one week on). Worth researching! Doc says 6 months to one year of recovery but it WILL happen if we stick to her restricted activity and short lead walks. We are one week into the new program - will keep you posted and good luck with your dog.

+Donna Hill (Clicker Training Dogs) I schooled my 4yo retriever moonbeam to stop digging up the back yard in just 5 days. It was really simple. My secret to success is the Dog discipline magic system that I found with google.

Today my dog was put in crate rest for 2 weeks. On day 1 and he seemed to calm down when i lied infront of his crate door and started to read a book. At least with my dog, being next to me helps him relax and sleep.

I dunno.. these activities seem pretty excessive (movement) if a dog is under strict crate rest orders.. I'd worry about most of them shown. Cute pups!

Regarding a brachycephalic adult male Bulldog.....would all of these crate rest games still be applicable (for instance the Muffin Tin Game?) for me to train him while he recovers for about 6 weeks due to a torn ACL? Thank you for any advise you have for me.

There are instructions for some of them in the video description but they are intended for more mature dogs. With puppies, focus on socialization to strangers, objects, other animals etc. Housetraining and bite inhibition should be priorities.

Thanks! He's 3; I didn't mean puppy in the literal sense, although he could use some help with socialization to strangers. He barks incessantly to alarm us and then cries and screams if he doesn't get to say hi to guests in our home. I'll work on some of these things with him, instead of just down stay. Thanks again!
