Hi thank you for the video, the Cheadle heath station is now morrisons, the Cheadle station is that nice restaurant so you can still enjoyed what was, loved it, Pete 👍
Hi,my name is Phil I did 50yrs on the footplate 8yrs on steam i started at edgeley shed in 1961in 1962 I moved to Trafford Park shed as a fireman for 2yrs then back to edgeley I know a lot of the railway in these video I finished my time out at longsight as a driver Regard Phil.
Cheadle Heath station had 5 platforms, No.1 was a bay platform, for trains going south, 2 and 3 were the up and down through Main lines, and 4/5 were for the Liverpool lines towards Cheadle Jct, and also used for the local services to Manchester Central and return..
I bunked the sheds at Heaton Mersey, Stockport, Trafford Park and Newton heath on my visits to my uncle in 1965-67. Ended up living in Didsbury for 10 years from 1988-1998 used to go to B and Q in Stockport! always wondered where Tiviot Dale was. I travelled back to London from Manchester Central once, How could you resist not going ing through Crewe on the WCML?. The Midland Pullman stopped to pick up from Cheadle Heath on its way to London. Glad you had a sunny day for your filming amazing how nature takes over
Used to trainspot at Tiviot Dale Sta. and also at Brinnington Tunnel. There was also a small sidings near Georges Road/Didsbury Road/Green Lane serving Bennetts Ironfoundry. Around 1991 I found traces of Tiviot Dale platform (you approach it from the site of the old Hanover Church, Lancashire Hill). I could also get into the tunnel under St. Mary's Church then. There were also some tracks left on Portwood Sidings then being in the process of being removed.
My late Father was at Heaton Mersey shed from 1951-63 and the day he left took a shedplate (9f) off a withdrawn 8f loco. Was on our garden shed door for decades. Told me very many tales of his times there at that very busy MPD.
Glad I found this. I just uploaded a video of a walk along the Mersey and was trying to get my head around how the different lines used to join up. This has answered a few questions.
That's not where Heaton Mersey shed was. You are coming from the wrong angle. A new footbridge over the Fiver Mersey has been built to replace the old one, and on the same position, which led to the very opening of the shed, so very easy to locate. There's a factory/warehouse thing on the site now.
Great video. The old goods shed at cheadle heath station became United Carriers a parcel firm. My dad worked there in the 70s 80s. Further up the midland i used to play as a kid on the area of what used to be Bridge Hall sidings, the midland just below was freight only then but still had double track but i remember it being lifted and realigned to single. The stone trains still use it.
I used to play on Bridge Hall sidings when it was a sidings early/mid 50s. I also remember Deltics on the lower Midland rails. We used to live on Birdhall Road & my dad worked at the Oil Well Engineering Co.
Thankyou very much for taking your time to put this video together, excellent piece of documentary. Can I ask, I came across a black and white picture many years ago of the Breadbury warren truss railway bridge over the M60 before the M60 was built. Would I be right in thinking it used to go over a railway before the M60 was built? I'm sure there were around 4 or 5 lines beneath it? Would you happen to have any pictures or footage of it in any of your other videos? Kind regards Billy Brown
Hi billy, there was no railway bridge where the M60 passes under the current railway line, it was purpose built for the motorway project. The old railway near breadbury ran alongside Morrison’s leading eventually to Godley jct and the Woodhead line. The only similar location was where the mainline went under the line near heaton Mersey shed, leading onto cheadle Heath and midland main line.
@@onemanc That could have been it, was it similar to the bridge at Breadbury? Its had me stumped for ages because I couldn't find anything on it myself. I thought you would be the chaps to ask. Great video of Tinsley too by the way, I'm going through them as we speak. Keep up the good work :)
We all moan about Beeching but the railway is its own worst enemy since the 1980s how much land has been sold off , routes closed , single lining taken place to save money no wonder the network is struggling to run the services required.
Why is the railway its own worst enemy? I'm not having a go or poking fun at you, respectfully I'm just curious as to why the railway infrastructure caused its own demise? In my opinion, the railway infrastructure should have been preserved and for whatever reason, the UK Government didn't have enough money to maintain it, as absurd as that sounds. And yet, the UK Government seems to have lots of money for "overseas" matters.
Sacrilege to pull down Victorian buildings and build ugly shops and mean estates on trackbeds. I love the cottage orne style..just like the stations on the line to Birchwood.
The whole ex-GC/CLC network around Manchester appears to have been set for run-down/closure long before Beeching was wheeled out: it was a case of 'last in/first out' and some of the lines could well have been done without.

Great video, thank you
Used to 'bunk' Heaton Mersey Depot in the last years of steam 67/68; we used to cross a footbridge over the Mersey from Gorsey Bank Road.
The strange sign is CLC milepost. indicating 181and 3/4 miles from London.
Wow! What a great video. I wonder if that old rail arch is still their? 19:30
it was a very complex area for track etc
