Wow, very helpful on something I thought would be common knowledge. But, this was good insight for me. Spent too much time trying to imitate pro players. It, doesn’t always work in real time… 😮 As a UA-cam trained club player this is helpful for me to understand my strokes. TY Coach!
I I developed my own forehand ! Imitating or emulating someone is not for me. I started out with 12 variations , then brought it down to 8 , then 6, down to 4 ! To excel in this game , you need more than one version of your forehand. That is an also true for the Backhand !
Fed's forehand is completely different from Joker's forehand. Fed is actually a half-loop descending to the pat-the-dog, whipping forward and upward with a lot of lag. Joker's is a full loop that is crescent shaped swing that doesn't use much lag and is more of a flatter, horizontal stroke. Fed's forehand requires great timing and Joker's is a safe stroke that depends on getting more contact on the ball and less on timing. The next gen forehand uses a full loop like Joker with the pat-the-dog/lag like fed's. You don't need perfect timing like fed's and you still get the whipping effect. However, you need more time to complete the full loop. Fed's half loop is optimized for playing at the baseline. There are instances where Fed's forehand is the same as the next-gen forehand and that's when the ball is pretty high. Fed's elbow is then lifted to the same height as the ball and this is the same as the next gen. Tiafoe's forehand requires more time to execute than the other forehands and can be a liability on fast surfaces. To me, Tiafoe has a lot of abilities but is sabotaged by this odd technique, just look at his serve also. He hasn't won many titles but currently is ranked 15.
Hi. Wally... Yes Novak's forehand is different to Federer's forehand, which is different to Sinners But, many people m players copy their favorite pro player. This video is trying to explain how players can find their own forehand technique. What is your preferred style? How do you hit the ball?

I practice different techniques against the wall to see which is best and the most consistent for me.
