    I bought a 1997 vectra 1.7 td with the izusu engine for 400€. The clearcoat is bad on the bonnet and roof but mechanically is perfect and no leaks. Now it has over 700.000km and chugs along in confort and the AC works quite well. The only issue I had was a spongy brake pedal due to a leak in the rear driver side brake but since I am a mechanic it got fixed for 35 €. had it for 5 years as a daily work car. my weekend family car is a 2.0 cdti insignia which I bought for 1200€ with a blown engine that I rebuilt for 600€ in my garage.

    Be careful with what you buy...A cheap BMW or Mercedes can become really expensive if something goes wrong.

    I must admit you have pulled up some good ones. They would have all been at scrap value in the UK. The thing to remember about Portugal is you scrap a car because you crashed it. No salt on the road very little or no rust.

    Cheers Tony. Very informative and useful info. I totally agree with your philosophy. I’ve been around and worked with cars all my life. Driving a €1500 car ensures your forget car park dings, damage, theft, etc. And if you’re handy with mechanicals, no problem. The only vehicle I wouldn’t compromise on is a motorbike.

    I have been driving beaters for many years. I agree with you not to keep up with Jones on having to buy new car. The newer cars have a lot of plastics and are next to difficult to get parts and high repair costs. I am surprised with all environmental concerns manufacturers get away with cars that will fall apart and brick not lasting 10 years.
    What was the MOT time you mentioned?

    • @rodryguezzz
      @rodryguezzz 8 днів тому

      Paperwork is quite easy. You fill in a simple form with your info, the seller's info and the car's plate and VIN. Then you can go to a notary, for example, and it is now your car. Before driving it you need to get a new insurance. Just take your new car's info to an insurance company and they will make you one.

I think we will bring our old Skoda with us, but pick up a PT banger (maybe an estate or van for dirty stuff) cheaply, so this helps a lot. More stuff like this please!

      It's a very good question... I see cars here for sale with 500,000kms or more... tbh, I think that it's that cars hold more value here so they're kept running where they'd be scrapped in the UK. To give you an example, I bought my car for 575 quid, around 700 Euros... about 2 years ago, the clutch went with 300,000kms on the clock... to replace the clutch was 1200 Euros... in the UK, she'd have been scrapped, but, in Portugal, to replace my car like for like would have been over 3000 Euros!!

    Thanks for this! Not hardly any content on cars for people thinking of moving to Portugal. In the USA we look for alot of Toyotas when buying older and less money because they are reliable and last a long time. What cars in Portugal are somewhat like that? Do you even see Toyotas, or other Japanese cars there? My wife and I love mini vans, great for hauling people at times or put the seats down and haul stuff in the back. Do places let you have cars inspected by mechanics before purchase? Thanks!

    Your choices break so many of my car buying rules. No American brands (crap). No Manual (can't drive that). No diesel (toxic). No turbo (it breaks). No second hand is another one.
    The low IUC for older cars is so unfair. It is supposed to be a measure to punish cars with bigger engines etc (for new cars) while allowing all these guys driving antiques to trundle around obliterating the environment. Makes no sense and is a badly cloaked tax on people who the government figures are good for a few quid and can afford a bit of milking by the state.
    Why a new car? It's the same reason I would not buy second hand clothing or a second hand sofa. I think other people are foul and I have no idea what they have done in the car previously. Smoked, eaten, sweated and vomited probably. It would drive me nuts and I would feel soiled. With the new car, i also like the warranty and the fact that they retain a lot of value in Portugal if the condition is good and the mileage is low.

Everyone was horrified. Apparently, there is some regulation against it. I have never used credit and don't even have a credit card. You have to be very careful with Mercedes because they don't do any cavity treatments (except in Switzerland, where it is required by law). When Mercedes get to a certain age they have a lot of rust and mechanical problems that are very expensive to repair. Stay away from Mercedes.
