Manchester United are for sale. After years of conflict between supporters and owners, the Glazer Family, who have held majority control of the club since 2005, are searching for a buyer.
But why now, and what will happen next? How much are Manchester United worth? Who could afford to buy United?
Laurie Whitwell and Dan Sheldon explain, Craig Silcock illustrates.

As a Liverpool fan I've been saying for years that we should support the movement to get the Glazers out. I couldn't care less about United self-destructing, if anything it's hilarious watching them suffer, it's the fact a foreign owner has been allowed to come in and do it. If it can happen to them it can happen to any of us. There should be legal requirements in place to stop would-be buyers from ruining/using our clubs the way the Glazers have ruined United and how Mike Ashley used Newcastle, either you treat our clubs with care and respect or stay away from English football

I think the main stumbling block for any potential buyer is the need for massive infrastructure investment. I found when I went to Old Trafford 20 years ago it felt like a tired worn out stadium. Also Carrington apparently needs a chunk of money put into it to modernise. It looks like the purchasing of Liverpool would be the better investment for many/if not all potential buyers. I'd be surprised if Man Utd was sold for £4b+ and I wouldn't be surprised if the sale of the club takes a lot longer than anticipated.

the one thing that united has that liverpool doesn't quite have in the same level is the only thing the glazers did, which is the MASSIVE brand strength it has in Asia's new markets (India, China, so on)

@@leo1fun while true what has that branding in the Asian and Middle eastern markets actually acheived apart from football tourism ?
They hardly saw a bigger slice of the pie in terms of TV deals (rights sold by the Premier League as a whole) and appearance fee aside the tours wont generate that much extra revenue for the club (£15 million for a pre-season tour would probably equate to if the Premier League had given them an extra 6 home games in the season).
While lack of champions league football has made it more difficult to attract high calibre players, at the same time the scouting and recruitment teams have made some terrible decisions which cant help the club finances that much (buying players for high transfer fees, and then selling them at a loss 6-12 months later)

The main reason which you missed. Utds debs are unhinged, that means that as interest rates increase the amount they have to pay each year goes up. It has gone up from £20m a year to £124m a year (just for the interest) in the last quarterly accounts. Debt has also increased.

'Project Big Picture' is literally what Madrid and Barca did to La Liga.. They dominate all the revenue and tv shares in spain then buy potential players from inferior clubs.
This is the reason why traditional clubs like Athletic, Atletico, and Valencia refused to sell players to them unless they had pass their prime.
Torres, D. Silva, Mata, and De Gea, Llorente were some of players who had to play abroad because in their contracts they couldn't be transfered to those 2 giants.

The fact you didn’t talk about the financial problems that the glazers have put Manchester United in is criminal because the revenue is not going up but they aren’t willing to invest in the clubs infrastructure because they don’t invest there own money and the debt they put the club on just for buying the club is absolutely insane with a percentage of it being paid off as a 16 percentage interest which is absolutely ridiculous interest percentage. So they want to sell before the value drops because if you go to old Trafford or see videos you would see a stadium that 18 years ago was one of the best stadiums and then they came in and never invested in the infrastructure of it which is absolutely heartbreaking to see so now the stadium is slowly deteriorating it’s just sad, I went to old Trafford in the first game of the season and they had broke seats at the top and I was told that has been like that for a long time had they fixed it costing max 100 pounds and leading to having one extra person on every single game which would lead to small profit. You should get the small things right and then it will lead to you getting the big things right. Can’t wait to see them gone will definitely try to go to old Trafford again when they sell because the atmosphere would be insane and if the right owner buys us it will be even more electrifying. I know that our wage bill pushes us 16% over the FFP regulations but that’s a problem we’re already starting to solve by fixing the wage bill and hopefully the new buyers come with an army of sponsors to help us circumnavigate FFP. Whoever take care of ManUtd next would need further significant investment in stadium, training ground, squad rebuild and a benemoth amount of debt left by Glazer themself. Presumably next owner will be more typical, not take dividends and maybe even [holds breath] invest their own money in the club, again like typical owners.

I'm a United fan and I hope we end up with owners that make a net contribution to the club's finances rather than taking money out. But if we get another group who view it as a business then that won't be the case.
