  • Research interview for our sitcom concept - "We Are Familia," Synopsis: When a Historically Black College gives scholarships to twenty incoming Latino freshmen, the campus falls into a cultural uproar, as the African American and Latino students struggle to coexist. The campus is further disrupted when a Latino student of Afro descent is awarded a scholarship, which in turn challenges everyone's thoughts on race, ethnicity, and culture. In the end, the students learn that what unites them is stronger than what separates them and that "family" extends past all color lines and language barriers.

I watched this video and it bring tears to my eyes to see this young man receiving love and being welcomed in an HBCU. I graduated from an HBCU and it was the place that made me feel comfortable more than any other university I’ve entered since then. I am happy to see our HBCUs are carrying on the legacy of educating those that are disadvantaged by the majority and offering opportunity despite their color or background.

As a HBCU Alum this was wonderful to hear. Knowing that HBCU's still serve an important purpose.

Yes, the purpose continues. The diversity is also alive and well.

I am Vanity Duran, a recent broadcast journalism graduate from Florida A&M University and I am of Dominican descent. THANK YOU SO MUCH for shedding light on this topic. So many changes are quickly occurring, however, many people are still unaware of the importance of the diversity at an HBCU. I just started working at the campus as an enrollment coach to help diversify the campus population. I would love to connect with you all and speak more about this. Thank you.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Latino students are still enrolling at Johnson C. Smith University and have recently founded Latin@ fraternity and sororities.

No matter what ethnic group one comes from, you WILL experience growth and ENLIGHTENMENT while attending an HBCU. Because, HBCUs welcome you with open arms even when you don't realize it. So many disenfranchised (no matter their color or ethnic background)students experience an enlightment and growth at HBCUs.

You're celebrating undocumented white Hispanics taking over hbcus? You are sick. No wonder blacks stay at the bottom. You think Hispanic institutions will reciprocate this diversity mess?

I don't think this is putting any light on anything. This story could be told by many Latino students over many years. It's not a knock on the young man. If you want to prove something meaningful. You have to bring something meaningful.
