    The Beatles have stayed relevant for over 50 years since their breakup so I wouldn't be too concerned about their ongoing relevance in the future especially with the sad state of popular music in the 21st century up until now.

    Owen Gleiberman in Variety just wrote an excellent op-ed on the topic. In short, he says the mistake is not just in Mendes handling the biopics, but that all four should have separate directors, such as Martin Scorsese, Richard Linklater, or Todd Haynes --- who he says "have used pop music [in their films] with the expressiveness of action painters." Mendes has not demonstrated such an interest in music, he says, so how did he earn the right to handle the "ultimate tricky subject for a biopic, since their story is so wrapped up in mythology." Another problem Gleiberman notes: "Consider the following scenario. Sam Mendes releases his first Beatles movie, and no one much cares for it. Are we then stuck, irrevocably, with three more Mendes Beatles movies? Who gave him the keys to the Fab Four kingdom anyway? Didn’t Sam Mendes learn to share as a child?" It's an astute op-ed. Not sure if I can post links in comments, but I'm sure you can easily find it.

    Not a fan of biopics either because they are almost always embellished with things that did not happen or they take liberties with rearranging the order of events. Elton John & Queen were examples. I think it's fraud. I expect the same with the Beatles.

      I feel like there’s a pattern of biopics failing to understand the medium which they are trying to explore. For instance, the Tolkien biopic featured a scene in which, while fighting in the trenches of WW1, Tolkien witnesses an explosion and in the fire “sees” the Balrog monster. The film thus implies that Tolkien was “inspired” and conceived this idea and others through action or other outsized, embellished events in his life. In Tolkien’s specific case, we know that much of his inspiration and ideas by and large came from simply sitting around smoking his pipe. This is not a process that would translate well into film and so, realizing that, the filmmakers opted for spectacular embellishments which were untrue to the subject and medium they were trying to explore. Another egregious example is any film attempting to depict Brian Wilson’s creative process. Only Brian Wilson knows what it’s like to inhabit his brain and, unless he decides to hop behind a camera and is given an endless budget, any other attempts to convey his experience will come off as hackneyed and grasping.
      I suppose this is the fundamental flaw of any biopic attempting to portray the growth of an artist- creativity is largely an interior process and, by extension, a boring thing to watch. While Jackson’s recent Beatles documentary unearthed a few gems (Namely, McCartney improvising his way to “Get Back”), it largely contained footage of The Beatles simply goofing around or hammering away at their instruments until inspiration struck. This is true to the experience of being an artist and I respect Jackson for recognizing and committing to it rather than contriving some drama or plot devices to get the songs written. However, your average non-musician or casual fan was likely bored out of their minds watching it.
      What I’m trying to say is that endeavoring to portray artistry and creativity is a fool’s errand. Most biopics fail the moment they attempt to convey the internal experience of an artist through external, storytelling methods. The best biopics are ones that set out to tell a very specific story within the life of their subject. Give me a Beatles biopic about the three days counting down to the Ed Sullivan performance, or about the final days leading to their dissolution (if you insist on personal drama), but spare me some long, unfocused examination into the life of an artist which, in attempting to tell their life story while also selling their brilliance and “legacy” as an artist, fails to do either. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. Have a good day!

    Thanks for your preview. I initially thought it would be a single movie when I first learned of the project. Upon hearing it was going to be four separate films, I immediately thought it was overkill. However, I have since come to the conclusion that it would probably be best to hear each of their perspectives uninterrupted instead of a back and forth dialog. I expect they will follow a pattern similar to Peter Jackson and release each biopic in four consecutive weeks. I certainly hope this will live up to the hype.

  • @ryan9139
    @ryan9139 3 місяці тому +4

    I hope that they space out the films to reflect the evolution of the band and ground it in a different perspective for each era. It would be cool to start with Ringo who could serve as an outside perspective on the other three since he joined last just as the band was really taking off. Then George’s film could follow their touring years and height of Beatlemania from the perspective of the youngest Beatle thrust into the spotlight. Then John and Paul’s movies could be about their studio years and breakup.

    • @ryan9139
      @ryan9139 3 місяці тому

      This would also enable them to cast for all four movies with the same actors and embrace that they all would be visibly aging across the films.

    I suppose it's not aimed at people like me, so I don't mind as long as it brings more people into the wider Beatles community. I'm certainly not worried about the "competition" with Queen- pretty sure the balance will revert back towards the fab 4 in time.

  • @dlovas
    @dlovas 3 місяці тому +1

    I'm a little concerned about the individualistic approach to begin with. One of the most revolutionary things about The Beatles was that four average working-class lads formed a band, and as a unit, they became larger than life. They changed the paradigm from corporate solo artists to a joint creative effort of everyday people. I think the concept of these films already casts a shadow over this very important detail about The Beatles' legacy.

  • @I_Am_The_Paulrus

    I have my doubts about this. I don't think Sam Mendes is the greatest director in the world. I'd be happier with Peter Jackson doing it! But I guess he's all Beatled-out
    The four interlocking biopics is an intriguing idea though - Matt your mention of Rashomon got me thinking alright. For example, Paul will be the protagonist 'hero' in his movie, but will then be portrayed as the antagonist 'villain' in George's (and maybe John's) movie...and vice versa

I wish we could get a nickel for every proposed project and we would be millionaires! I have been responding to them that these films will never happen! It would be hard enough to come up with one film rather than 4! There is also an LR project with Selena Gomez too that is "in development"....:)

    I agree - biopics are often compressed and hagiographic (the recent Bob Marley one is a good example).
    But you're also absolutely right that this will be more for those who dont know the Beatles in depth like the passionate fans - I, like many others, will have to resist the temptation to nit pick... as long as there are no straight lies I'll probably be fine.
    I love the four perspective idea and I hope the films will cover bits that are not very well known to the general public.
    Before 2027 we also have The Beatles making an appearance in the upcoming series of Doctor Who, which as a fan of both I'm excited by

      That's where my mind went right away too. I could take or leave biopics, there are small handful I like but what I hope is that the soundtracks give us more vault stuff and the hype and new interest in The Beatles ends up with new stuff being bootlegged. It'd probably convince Mark to step it up with his books too.

    The order of release of those movies is a hot subject in itself. My bet is: Ringo, George, Paul and John. After that, the viewing figures will test the modern day popularity of each Beatle directly. This will be more exciting to see than the final product.

    • @isuriadireja91
      @isuriadireja91 3 місяці тому

      Yes. Your order is the same as mine. And I tell ya why...
      Ringo - how was it that he was asked to replace Pete Best.. And experience the whole Beatlemania AS the replacement member.
      George - his struggle in starting to compose and getting his songs onto the albums, competing with those of John & Paul's.
      Paul - taking charge, after the death of Brian, business and creative wise. His conceptualization of Sgt. Pepper's album.. and the growing tensions with George & John.
      John - him getting the divorce from Cynthia and involved with Yoko..and the reactions he's getting towards them from his bandmates and the world.
      The break-up, when all PoVs finally...come together. 😉

    I might also ask. Why not Peter Jackson? Not only is Jackson a massive Beatles fan, he's got previous with Get Back, and he knows how to craft epic films with many elements AND shoot them back to back. Sam Mendez can't even do 2 James Bond movies without completely failing. Mendez is the last person I'd be hiring.

    In what order would they release them? Would they go obvious- John, Paul, George & Ringo? Playing to the probable greater interest in John and Paul as first releases, would George & Ringo then be anticlimactic with poor viewer sales? Do you go in reverse order? Or do you “Bookend” the Fab-Four biopic release order, with Paul first and John last, playing to wistful mythologising and “what ifs” of Lennon’s untimely demise…?

    Your comments have made me feel better about this whole thing (which I had some doubts about). I'm assuming that all four films will be concurrently filmed, with the same cast. I'm hoping that while all 4 films will have to touch on the same basic important points, that each film will have a lot that the other 3 don't, so that we are given a fairly comprehensive view of all the different times in their lives + work with each other. This could be really a fine portrait of the Beatles, if it is done well.

  • @Sp33gan

    If, and when, they are released, get ready for the backlash on who doesn't look like who. I can already hear it.
    Like you, Matt, I'm less concerned about casting as I am about accuracy and depth of each story. Obviously, with two surviving members and family of John and George, there's going to be some content juggling. Add in Apple's seemingly heavy hands and we may end up with four stories of gloss. I'd rather see the truth, warts and all, but I'm already a fan.

    In terms of recent Bio pics , I preferred Elton's RocketMan over the Queen films. Elton chose to do a little part bio pic and LOT part fantasy "musical". All due to the very fact that they admitted that they cant get everything right, nor fit it all in 2 hours. In Rocketman you get the gist of what Elton was about (good and bad) but not worried about what song was on what album (harder to do with the Beatles though).

    I thought "Walk The Line," the biopic of Johnny Cash, was a great movie and also enjoyed "The Doors." I can't imagine doing this from each Beatles' own perspective. It seems like there might be liberties taken trying to project what their thoughts & feelings were. I would enjoy seeing their earliest years...the American r&b influence, art school, The Quarrymen, playing in Germany, their families. But that's about it. An ambitious project for sure.

    I would be most interested in a Martin movie, as that would avoid a bunch of frivolous fandom crap and just deal with the musical aspect, but that is something that biopics hate. You know, they hate actually talking about what made someone famous in the first place, they would rather manufacture infighting and drama, exploding boobies and death-bed reconciliation than to actually tell the story.

    These films will inevitably please some and anger others. There have been plenty of Beatles biopics already, but this is the first time they will use the actual music. That makes a huge difference.

    Biopics are hit or miss. I enjoyed the Temptations miniseries of 1998 because the friendship of Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams provided the running theme. Rocket Man was a hoot--a warts-and-all fantasy. Bohemian Rhapsody was a very conventional movie that sought to elevate Freddie Mercury to a classic heroic figure with a redemption arc. Four Beatles movies could work if they focus on the friendships and how they changed over time, including after the breakup. John, George, and Ringo still worked together on their individual projects, and John and Paul maintained a brotherly connection after they were no longer working together. Two of Us captured the spirit of their relationship even though it was fiction. The four movies could try the same approach but in a more truthful fashion.

    Hi Matt, I have great concerns over these four biopic on The Beatles. Take the movie Queen Bohemian Rhapsody, tho entertaining, was historically inaccurate. The actors who played important characters were laughable with their dialogue. Or the like Eton John's Rocket Man film becoming a musical! We had Paul McCartney slam Nowhere boy movie for being totally inappropriate & inaccurate. Do we want these types of movies representing The Beatles for future generations? I, for one, will keep a great distance from the project. I will need a great amount of convincing over these four up and coming Biopics.

    I'm in total agreement with you on this highly opinionated subject, Matt. I think the more you know about someone, the less you would find the information in biopics relevant or even entertaining. Being a Beatle fan for 60 years, I don't see me having much interest in this at all.

    If they wanted to be really radical, they could have the protagonist 'voiced' and not visually represented at all, having the 'action' happen around them. It wouldn't sell as many theatre tickets but would make a non-biopic fan take more interest I think.
    If anyone steals this idea, I will make a half-hearted attempt to sue...

    Ever since I saw the Doors movie, I've hated biopics, and pretty much for the very same reason as you state here. That said, this prospect of a quadriptych told from the perspective of each of them is at least interesting. Depending on how they do it though, there might be some real concern about viewer fatigue as they'll be telling the same story all over again several times, albeit from different eyes. There'll need to be some very finely tuned and well-thought over considerations in order to make this work.

    I’m with you, I’m not a great fan of films that are about real people. I spend half the time unintentionally superimposing images of the real people over the actors. Unless it’s Michael Sheen (who was brilliant as Brian Clough in the British film ‘The Damned United’). That’s the sole exception in every biopic I’ve ever seen.

    ReHi.
    Agree - bio-pics are problematic. There are so many traps around'n'about them - nobody knows what it what, up or down. The actual stories are hazed in so much mythology we can't be sure - and biographical books often seem to be spiced with amounts of 'made-ups' or plain exaggerations. The whole craze-whirl and the task of deciding what to believe is enough. I don't wanna see Bob Dylan in a semi fictitious party situation arguing with a flux-freaked Ginsberg, , , would rather not look at someone's idea of Starr's reaction after he's told not to play on those first tunes.
    That said, I am of course curious about the coming enterprise. Probably for the same reasons we all are, , , us dinosaur-fans.
    What can they show and tell us, , , we who were there in the audience when tale rolled out. We'll literally see. . .

    I expect they'll release them 1 at a time going chronologically as they joined the band: Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Ringo. Probably 3 or 4 months apart.
    As for the box sets I've only bought one "The Beatles (White Album)". With the others I downloaded the more interesting outtakes and alternate versions, put them to CDRs. I think they should make 1 large set for their first 4 or 5 albums, remixed by someone who is NOT Giles Martin. No tinkering, just bring out what's there in true, pristine stereo sound. I do like hearing John's rhythm guitar on those early tracks on the Red album, nice. What I don't need is cranked up drums and bass for "today's audience".

    It is certainly interesting but I do fear the worst.
    I don't like biopics at the best of times and the idea of four related Beatle biopics is fraught with peril. It's impossible to condense the depth of the life experience of any of the Fabs into a two hour feature film, even if the movie only focuses on the period of Beatles activity. In George's case, I think his post-Beatle adventures are far more interesting than his years as The Quiet One.
    Another thing about the Beatles is that their physical appearance matters much more than with most subjects. Every detail of their personalities was displayed on their faces and in how they chose to present themselves at any given time. Their faces were immensely expressive and contributed enormously to how we perceived their characters.
    However, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating so I'll need to suspend judgement until I the finished results appear -- if I live long enough to see them!

      If all musical biopics hit the Ray standard, I'd be a kid on Christmas morning. Watching Ray, I thought, "This director knows more about Ray Charles than I do" (and I knew quite a bit). Watching the Johnny Cash, Queen, Elton John, and Elvis biopics, I thought, "This director doesn't know as much as these artists as I do." Ray was willing to go into tiny details about specific sessions at Atlantic Records or ABC Records that casual fans couldn't have cared less about but which showed a respect for the hardcore fan that, say, Bohemian Rhapsody didn't quite. I also prefer to hear the original recordings, so that's another strike against Walk the Line and Rocket Man. The only musical biopic that I thought pulled off "the actor doing his own singing" was The Buddy Holly Story, but perhaps he's a singer who's easier to convincingly imitate?

    • @deirdre108
      @deirdre108 3 місяці тому +1

      @@PartTimeBuddhist Yes, "Ray" was for me the gold-standard in music biopics, although I did like "Round Midnight" ok, although it wasn't to the level of "Ray". What would be my dream movie however would be "Otis" a biography of Otis Redding with the same screenwriter and director of "Ray".
      I'd be a kid on Christmas morning for THAT one!

    Not a fan of biopics but I watch them to see what the general public are being fed they are for new fans not old and all of them are full of things that didn't happen. I'm still on message boards telling new ELVIS fans that Elvis didn't fire his manager from the stage he knew the Colonel was Dutch because he met his relatives and the Col spoke Dutch to Dutch fans all the time. It'll be interesting to follow the updates on the Beatles films casting is going to be a massive problem. There's sure to be cross over with characters and stories you couldn't have a Ringo biopic without John, Paul and George appearing. Biopics will be old hat when The Beatles films come out people are realising they are being fed made up stories.
