I'd recommend being much more aggressive when using the brass wool. Really stab the tip in there and rub all sides hard against the brass to really remove the oxidation.

I did that originally. I bought the brass wool and some flux a while ago and rubbed a number of stuff in addition to the wool aggressively against the tip between dips in flux. I finally found a youtuber that claims he uses the same tip every day for over a year just by applying tip tinner to it every time he pulls it out of the stand or station. I think I remember him doing lighter brass wool stabbings. He also said to ditch any oxidized tip that is giving you problems and start new. I already put in a new tip and solder is spreading on it pretty well, but I think that is more because it is new. I'm drenching it in tip tinnitus and solder before turning it off which I didn't use to do. I only used a wet sponge before as well.

@Electronzap I have used the same tip for the past 5 years. But I don't use it every day, maybe once a week. I clean it with a copper wool pad from the kitchen. It it gets really bad I soak it in acetone for 3 minutes and then use a copper wire brush. I found that what eats the tips up is some of the acid fluxes. They will litterally eat the metal up. So be careful with especially the older ones. The newer ones are more mild. Also when I am done I brush it really well on the copper wool before I turn it off. Every time I turn it on, I let it heat up then scrub it on the copper and then apply some solder to the tip. That's the best advice I can give you. I would try to avoid sand paper, you can break off the coating and get to bare copper under it and then it won't work as good. At that point you have to replace the tip. A good tip will last a very long time if you keep it clean.

A bit of a tangent, but I use a timer on my soldering iron so that it automatically turns off after an hour. It’s easy to get distracted, so I like knowing that I have a “fail safe” system.
I’m going to try the ideas in this video (and in the comments) because my soldering iron gunks up frequently.

That's a good idea. I unplugged the wrong cord recently and almost burned myself when enough time passed that the iron should have cooled. If I find myself doing a lot of soldering, I'll definitely get a soldering station.

I like your videos and you know a lot more than about electronics than I do. But... I can solder-(very, very well and even SMD ) - I started building electronics kits back in the 60s.
Tip tinning is about keeping the tip in good condition.
The tip tinning mix is to recondition the tip. Tips usually get a bit cruddy (corroded and pitted) from all the the different fluxes etc. Clean old solder etc off (brass wool etc ), Dip the tip (into the treatment) and then it is good to go for several hours of soldering. No need to keep repeating.

Most people solder better than I do lol. And that's pretty much exactly what I gathered from a UA-camr I watched recently who says he can keep using the same tip every day for over a year just by using tip tinner and brass wool every time he grabs the iron. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I never did use this flux and like using the wire cutter i used to sharpen the place where I would need the soldering iron to be working

Yeah, I seen youtubers do all kinds of things to grind off the oxidation. I tried a number of things including rubbing steel tools across it and being rougher with the brass wool after dipping it in flux. Now I'm trying to copy a guy that claims he can keep new tips from oxidizing for over a year when he uses them every day, but I wanted to test it on the oxidized tip first. Thanks for the comment!

Good advice. I take more precautions when I am not filming.

Been breathing it for 60 years,..........still here & 70+ and brain is still very good 😀We also ate the lead based paint on our cots & had school rooms made from asbestos............🙃
