I agree with you 💯 I trained 20 years Started off in Boxing, Greco Roman Wrestling, Tangsoodo, a bit of Judo, Combat Sambo/Systema. Systema is good when you have a solid back ground Martin Wheeler he train's with the Machado brothers BJJ Systema Wrestling & Striking up in Beverly hills CA. Val Riazanov, Kevin Secours, Vladimir Vasilev are actually pretty good. I agree with your list 👍 That's awesome the Pit Kempo!

I would say , very important to be good at least in one martial art.
I did quite 4 years of bjj with Gracie family becoming a purple belt. With a little of karate and Judo I become confidente enough to react in different moments of my life to danger situations and save myself.
But my Bjj was old school with a strong self defense content.

The best defence is not getting into dangerous situations. The next best is running away. If you have to fight very little beats pure naked aggression. Pure rage overwhelms many fighting system. In terms of fighting systems nothing beats boxing. The ability to end a confrontation in a split sec is invaluable. Knocking someone out cold with 1 shot will also take the fight out of your attackers, they won't want to fight you the majority of the time. After that judo for grappling & anything else is a bonus. On the street being boxing & judo trained plus situational awareness, exuding confidence & being fit enough to run away is all you need 99.9% of the time.

From an MMA perspective: I always look at the 4 ranges of fighting,
Range 1 (dance on the line of striking range)
Shidokun karate, and taking bits and pieces of Combat Taekwondo and as bonus capoeira
You will learn in and out range movement, counter striking, not getting touched, heavy and versatile kicks etc
    Range 2 (striking range)
Have a solid base with Dutch Kickboxing and maybe little harder Muay Thai, with a bonus of Muay Chaya. You learn to punch, kick, knee, elbow, head movement, defense, blocking and more off the center line movement etc
    Range 3 (clinch)
I would recommend Judo and maybe the modernized style of Wing chun that’s up and coming, they are great at striking in clinch distance, manipulating the body and balance of the opponent, combining grabs with strikes in rapid succession, knees, punches, hammer fists, elbows, head buds etc. And the judokas can sweep, throw and trip.
    Range 4 (grappling)
Use gracieacademy BJJ and Dagestan wrestling. You can’t get tips and tricks from Greco Wrestling like stance and slams, maybe take downs from freestyle or setup from shoot Boxing. Learn submissions and Ground and Pound, take downs and position control.
You mix and match then into a style suited for you in an MMA gym, you spar. Note that it’s been proven 1v1 combat grabbing reigns supreme.
Just want the basics because you don’t have your whole life? Noted. You don’t wanna gonti the ground on the street so just stick to Dutch kickboxing or Muay Thai and then Gracie BJJ or Judo. Don’t go to the ground because you never know if he is alone, always be ready to run, usually make sure to stay moving etc
Even in self defense I believe having a well rounded art which is also a combat sport is the best. Yes a sport is the best why? Because it’s been tested and refined and upgraded a million times more than any other art that isn’t a sport. Because it’s evolving every second and the level of competition will always have more potential than any gym instructed. And lastly because in competition you will always find real pressure testing and sparring. And most of them will get you into shape and make you sharp instead of saying “yeah anyone can use this”

The majority of self defence is aplied on the streets where they is no rules anything goes. You will do anything to survive cause your life may depend on it. People don't just fight fist to fist they want use weapons like knifes, bottles, bar stools anything they can gain an advantage with. The main thing is you walk off from that situation and you ain't seriously hurt or even worse. I remember a lad back in the uk where I live. He did karate for around 3-4 years and was pritty decent he was out one night and got into a confrontation with another lad who was a bit older and bigger. And this lad attacked they lad I know and karete lad landed a good kick to is stomach which winded him and sent him back. The attacker got up and produced a blade and was waving it about they was a metal bar stool a foot away from the lad I know but he choose not to grab it. The lad with knife came forward waving the blade and over powered the lad I know and he unfortunately suffered a fatal blow to a major artery. What am getting at is my friend could of smashed the stool round is head or used it as a blocking tool. See is they is no rules on the street you just do what you can do to survive.

Great video, mostly i agree with. Boxing/Kickboxing is probably the best way to start, plain and simple.
I think JKD in a classical way (as Bruce Lee thaught) is using traditional martial arts but with a realistic mindset (no BS, use whatever works, discard anything that doesnt work). But after Bruce's death (RIP), his students kept evolving JKD. Some of them, i.e. Dan Inosanto, incorporated FMA (Fillipino MArtial Arts) in JKD. FMA is a very complete fighting system. For instance the empty handed part, called Pangamot, is in my humble opinion maybe the best system i know. It uses boxing and muay thai techniques ( a lot elbows and head butts) and also grappling, sweeps, throws, locks etc.
One of the main reasons I think it is very good for self defence is because it is a weapons based system, so even when i train empty handed, hand to hand combat, we assume the opponent has a knife, stick or some sort of weapon. Therefore we use "limb destructions".
This means whatever you give me ( a jab, a hook, a stab, a kick) i intercept (like JKD) with an elbow or knuckles to destroy or disable that limb, that might be holding a knife for example.
This also translates to knife and stick fighting, and the JKD/FMA footwork is quite similar and the two systems flow together nicely. So it is very versatile. Takes a lot of training though!
bottom line: Classical JKD is a traditional martial art, but progressive JKD (as described above with FMA influences) should be in the realistic spectrum. We sometimes practice with multiple opponents. We use 4 ranges, kicking, striking, trapping and grapppling. We use knives, sticks against the same or empty handed, so pretty much every aspect of a fight is trained. Read the Tao of JKD book and you will see that Bruce also had his thoughts on realism. For i.e. when you feel someone is following you, cross the street and see if they follow. Train your mind to be alert whenever you are out and about. Aim for weak spots of the body when you attack (eyes, groin, knees, throat), whatever it takes to nullify the threat.
I believe FMA certainly deserves a place in your list. I highly recommend to explore some FMA, it is so brutal and effective.
Looking forward to your response, and thanks for the video!!

The problem i see with circular arts is that they don't train "balls to the wall"
Linear fighting systems like boxing and wrestling train that way. What I like about thai boxing is that its linear however, they don't usually spar as hard as boxers.
Wrestling is top for me and I don't even do it. I was too old when I tried picking it up and my joints just couldn't handle it. Those guys are tough. You want to think twice about throwing legs at a wrestler. Snap you up and drop you on your dome. Pavement is not very forgiving so any wrestler out of the gym always has a weapon with them.

Every martial art is good if you know how to use it I believe in a real street situation boxing will work best because in the street always more than one attacker and boxers have the best footwork even though in Muay Thai or lethwei they use more limbs but they have a very squared stance which is harder to avoid more attackers but all martial arts that’s just my opinion every martial art will work well in the street

as a BJJ practitioner, BJJ is not far from Judo, as our roots come from there. I am not saying that BJJ is a superior art, we have throws from judo, like ogoshi, tai oshi, tome nage and so on. i wouldn't want to go on the ground either, but if I am taken to the ground, I will know how to survive and get back up from there. it is exciting to hear that you are learning more about Judo!

Most people just don't need all that and since so many of those Martial Arts have contradicting principles, they will be detrimental to developing a reliable skill set if mixed together. What people need is a method of neutralizing an adversary's power, a method of generating power, a method of delivering the generated power and conditioning methods to build the speed /timing and accuracy to operate their ingrained methodology under duress. That can and should be encompassed in a single Martial Art. Those methods should be flexible enough to allow them to function through whatever object happens to be in your hand, be it long or short, bludgeoning, bladed or flexible weapons. Those methods should be flexible enough to work in the environment that the individual lives and works in, those methods should be flexible enough that you can regulate that level of force as appropriate for the circumstances. Once a method is found that meets those needs what is actually needed is dedication and hard work, no number of shallow formulations and mixing of methods that have your muscles and tendons working against their previous training is necessary if we are talking practical street self-defense. Now, if your goal is fighting professionally under whatever rule set then it is good to have several arts that you can swap out to throw off your trained opponent who probably studied footage of your last fight to come up with a counter strategy. Anyway, just my two cents.

Is wrestling better than Judo for street fights?

    • @federalbureauofinvestigati8477
      @federalbureauofinvestigati8477 Рік тому

@@l.d.m.33 It depends. I'd say you can use Wrestling more often in street fights than Judo. You can pretty much always use Wrestling, while Judo is more situational simply because it's different to other grappling arts in a lot of ways. Judo is grip fighting, meaning you're gripping onto your opponent clothes, which offers the opportunity to pull off very unique throws and effective throws. While in Wrestling it doesn't really matter what the other person is wearing. So if you're living in a very hot area where people are wearing light clothing, Judo becomes more difficult (not impossible) to pull off. But if you for example live in a colder area where people where thick clothing, Judo become crazy effective and offers advantages over Wrestling. Now you can nearly always adapt Judo techniques to work with no-gi, but at this point the line between Judo and Wrestling becomes blurry and also it has to be trained. What I can agree with though is that the focus on putting you're opponent on the ground without yourself going to the ground, which is very dangerous in streetfighting situations (don't wanna be jumped by the other guys friends while on the ground. However, a negative thing about Judo is how used you get to turn your back towards the opponent, which is fine if you can pull whatever you're trying off, but if it fails you might be in danger.

Wrestling is number one of the street. By far. You're over analyzing this. A wrestler off the mat always has a weapon with him, its called the ground. They are built like bricks, can check kicks and defend the take down. The footwork is like boxing. They will grab you and dump you on your head. If you get up after that (unlikely) its going to be extremely slow and you will be eating a shoelace sandwich that will have you* on rubber leg street the whole way home.

I believe when you train in the self defence systems you are more able to keep your ego down and walk away from a fight. If you train for years in a competitive sport like boxing or mma you get conditioned 2, 3 times a week or more to win against your opponent in sparring or competition. In that case if you have an encounter with someone who is threatening you i believe it will be harder to keep your ego down and are more likely to engage in the fight. Whereas if you train something like krav maga and get conditioned to avoid the fight in the first place you are conditioned automically to keep your ego down. Off course there are a lot of boxers and mma fighters who are able to keep their ego down, i’m nog saying that all boxers and mma’ers are street thugs, don’t get me wrong here, but i believe ego is something that can instinctively and unconsciously arise in such situations. I don’t mean to offend boxers and mma’ers. What are your thoughts on this Nick? Am i wright or wrong in your opinion?

    • @TheSandkastenverbot
      @TheSandkastenverbot Рік тому

      I'm not Nick and I don't think you're correct.
      1) While evading a fight is the best thing to do, an MA still needs to prepare you for a fight. That's what you train for. Without sparring you are not prepared, period. No amount of situational exercises can do that. Thai boxing or Wrestling will help you not freeze in a fight. Most Karate styles do not.
      2) Your ego gets checked by sparring because you will almost certainly find people who are stronger than you. Learning flashy techniques or mock situations like in TKD often make people overconfident.

    •Ambush attacks
    •Multiple attackers
    •Defending against weapons
•If it's legal in your country, learning to use weapons
•Both the pre and post fight
    •Scenario training
•What are the laws and reasonable force in your country
•How to avoid a fight, and being aware of your surroundings
    •Pressure testing
    •Training in different environments
•Spiring, both standing and on the ground
I've learned these principles from training with Krav Maga Global. The head of KMG UK (Jon Bullock) introduced us to Rory Miller, which some of his methods is part of our training. He has even been teaching seminars every year.
I've come along way from where I was. I started off with Jujitsu (Japanese jiu jitsu just in case you get confused), Kickboxing, Goju Karate, Judo, Taiho Jitsu, and now Krav Maga.
Krav Maga seems to be the system that's gives me a proper understanding with self defense... I remember once I asked my Kickboxing instructor how to get out of a headlock. She didn't know what to say, as we all know, Kickboxing only teaches sparring.

Good videos, I like your content. Being a karate guy I always find it interesting when people speak of the things about it which make it ineffective. Then in the next sentence they talk about Thai clinch work, knees, elbows, etc. as being hyper effective. Were the Okinawan people some kind of morons? Are they the only fighting culture to not realize that most fights end up in some kind of grappling range? On the contrary, if you actually give it a look you’ll see that 99% of the time the concepts found in kata (yes it’s in the kata) is to close the distance, clinch- range limb/body control, knees/elbows, head butts, groin attacks, structure break, continue control, etc. AKA common sense defense tactics. Kata is not and never was intended as the default method of training that people see today. Only what was done as a template for remembering concepts when no training partner was available, with the bonus of conditioning your bodies’ cardio, balance, movement dynamics, timing, agility, speed, coordination. The list is long. I’m fortunate to be able to train with other like-minded karate practitioners. I don’t see our training as any different than KM or some other “real life SD” system. Thanks and if you read that whole thing I appreciate it!

Too many underestimate what Karate has got and is.
Same with Kungfu: how could we possibly put more than 400 styles in the same box?
The great thing about Trad. MA is that they teach values too, a guideline of virtues, which might prevent you from even getting into a fight due to awareness practice.

Something to also note is that Judo is mainly trained in Gi and some of the techniques require a Gi to even be utilised. The common argument you hear is "but people wear clothes on the street". Yeah they do, but not with the same kind of material as a gi top.
Additionally, there are countries with hotter climates like Southeast Asia, Africa, South America where most people don't wear thick jackets. Another point to note is that most Judo schools do not ever train in no gi. So in my humble opinion, submission grappling is the best style of grappling (Wrestling, no gi BJJ, and a few judo techniques). For striking, it's as you say, boxing base but with a strong emphasis on muay thai.

Should I learn BJJ or Boxing 1st? I have both near me although they train on the same days and times that I would be available to go so i can only pick one right now.

BJJ or any other grappling art. The grappling skills you need for self defense take far longer to learn.

I did Goju Ryu. The hand techniques are ridiculously bad. Katas are generally a waste of time. Kumite is usually light or semi contact. So no, Goju Ryu is at best D-tier.

The very best fighter I know mains Systema. Rommel San Pedro, founder of FALCON. He could spar with three amateur fighters without getting hit, even when lying down.
I'd recommend giving it a whirl. It looks weird, until you've tried it. It's one of my faves too. 🙂
