  • In this video, Daniel Reach from the Leatherverse goes through the order of operations you should follow when tooling leather. Always start by prepping your leather properly, then tool your design, seal and antique. There may be slight variations in these steps depending on what products you are using, but this order of operations will generally give you the best results.

I learn to use the acronym 'TO CRAP'.
Tool, Oil, Colour (dyes and paints), Resist, Antique, Protect.
Works well and easy to remember even if it is a little poorly labelled.

I made some suspenders recently from natural veg tan. I used black antique without sealing the leather and was rewarded with a beautiful silver finish and the tooling was hi lighted wonderfully.

This was really helpful. I'm hoping tonight to start my first project. (disabled) Sometimes my body doesn't want to cooperate. I have some really thin leather scraps that I plan on doing some tooling on and then try to make a simple key chain to see where it goes. Suggestions appreciated. Like your catch phrase too btw

pear shader before petal lifter. then pear shader again after petal lifter to enhance the shading.

If you can tool while the item is on the mold, that is ideal. If not you can wet mold after tooling, but, you may lose a little bit of definition since you are stretching the leather as you mold it.

not that the other vids are less good. I learn so much from you guys. im just a little afraid of gnomes cause of a goosebumps book, and traditional flowers are not my style. just super super excited about dragons and scales. >
