Paul Procter is one of the most gifted dry fly anglers you'll ever meet. It was a tremendous opportunity to film and observe him using his approach with the dry fly in some very testing conditions. A rising river with dirty water (getting muddier all the time) isn’t exactly what you hope for on a day targeting trout on the surface.
This chat was filmed at the end of our first day of working on what will hopefully become a fantastic guide to fishing the dry fly for trout and grayling in rivers and streams.
Paul was extremely generous with his thoughtful answers and I'm sure you'll find some fantastic insights to tackling trout fishing with floating flies. As well as discussing rise-forms and the importance of intensely watching the water before starting to cast - Paul also talks about the effects of current speed and water clarity on how fish take flies.
While he makes it clear that he doesn’t think his favourite way of targeting trout is “better” than any other method of fishing, it is true to say that many anglers aspire to master the skills of dry fly fishing for trout. This teaser chat is just a little bit of the background behind our project to capture Paul Procter’s approach to the dry fly in flowing water.

Great interview/talk. Its always nice to see others theories and thoughts. Rivers in flood is somthing that I to find interesting. There have been days I've fished a river on the rise and its been great. And of course days that it has been terrible 😂. The good old fishing dilemma.

Interesting stuff. It's great getting well above a river to see what the fish are up to, as the angler's eye view doesn't always show everything.

@@FishingDiscoveries One thing I forgot to mention was the bit about fish feeding on a rising river, someting barbel anglers are well aware of as you no doubt know.

There was one comment early on where Paul implied that on the first signs of a rising river the fish might be thinking that this might be my last opportunity to feed for a while as I don't know how long these conditions may last - is a fish capable of these kinds of thoughts?
I don’t believe trout have the capacity for conscious reasoning. However, the power of natural selection could act very strongly against any fish that failed to respond to any cues signalling the onset of bad conditions by temporarily increasing their food intake. In other words, all the fish that failed to do that may well not have lived long enough to reproduce and pass on any behavioural tendencies influenced by their genes.
