  • It's no secret that COP climate negotiations often disappoint. But the COP28 talks in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are off to a bad start... before they've even started. From fears about the location, to frustration of the appointment of oil man Sultan al Jaber as president, COP28 is off to a bad start before it's even started. This is ClimateAdam's COP28 explained!

      Focus on creation of new technologies which are cheaper energy, then greedy capitalism proactively makes the change! Regulation increases costs, destabilizes economies & threatens national security. Graphene filters can be used to get heavy water from the ocean for "AHWR" Thorium reactors to provide electricity at 70% cheaper than fossil fuel energy. Nuclear then can then be used to make Red Hydrogen fuel. 700bar tanks are now carbon fiber & light weight. (FCEVs) are now far more efficient, a fraction of the weight of Lithium battery electric, with 3 times the range & 2000hp! Tesla, Toyota & Porche will be coming out with hydrogen combustion engines in 2024.

      Interesting. Even though it might not feel like it is useful to go to these kind of happenings, I actually heard from a decision maker (who was in Glasgow at COP26) that what happens on the streets outside of the COP actually impacts what happens in the decision rooms. This year the COP will be in an oil state hard to get to by train so I see why many people boycott it, but I do think it can be useful to make your voice heard close to the negotiation rooms.

    Can we talk about how cryosphere researchers are insisting that 2C must be taken off the table? At around 1.7C we would be expecting full loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic. If we keep temperatures to 1.5C we will still lose about 40% of permafrost. Every tenth of a degree above that we keep losing more and more permafrost. There’s about 1.5 trillion tons of carbon locked up in permafrost and it really needs to stay that way.

    There hasn't been a moment of my life where I've been this dejected. I've been pushing a message of hope for 20 years now, since I got out of school and saw where society was heading. Since then, things have only became worse, and now there's even an entire misinformation movement trying to undermine our response to some of the largest challenges our species has ever faced. And time has run out. I say this on my channel all the time, but we may be the most important generations of humans to ever exist.
    What we do, how we respond, will literally determine if there is human civilization in the future. We've had many civilization collapses in our past (tens of thousands of them) but never before have they been on a global level. And never before have we been faced with not just a single existential threat (usually drought), but multiple, all at the same time, many exacerbating other ones, and often the solutions to each one being mutually exclusive with the solutions to others. For example, decarbonizing to save climate change create increased energy and resource demands, which exacerbates resource shortages, which impacts food production and global transport, which impacts global equity, which impacts climate refugees, which impacts economic crises, which impacts financial policy, which impacts energy investment, etc.
    Having this COP be completely hijacked by big oil, has me even more dejected than Glasgow, which itself had more oil and gas lobbyists than any other category in attendance. I was skeptical about UAE hosting, but after seeing the president of COP28 making backroom oil deals... the entire system is absolutely broken, and it's being laid out for all to see. Combine that with Biden going "nah, got other things to do" and not attending, I'm just so incredibly out of words dejected.
    At least there's 1 silver lining to all this.... we can now all clearly see that NOTHING is going to change outside of massive societal revolt. No leader, no government, no international panel is going to reverse this.
    Did you want a global strike? Because this is how you get a global strike.

    • @davestagner
      @davestagner 7 місяців тому

      @@barry28907 I think a lot more these days about how to get alternatives off the ground in the face of incumbent resistance. As Sharpe points out, in the early stages, subsidy works far better than market-shifters like carbon tax. Back when solar cost $3/kWh (20 years ago), no amount of carbon tax would have made it competitive with coal at 10c/kWh. Subsidies built utterly unprofitable solar panels, which got the manufacturing learning curve going. Once it got to be self-sustaining, it solved its own cost issues very quickly. Now, solar costs 2c/kWh and doesn’t need any subsidy at all - it’s growing as fast as the grid can handle, because it’s the cheapest solution. That’s because solar panels are incredibly simple devices. It’s basically just a window with some silicon wafers and a bit of wiring glued on. Most of the material is merely glass, aluminum, and plastic. There’s no moving parts and no chemical reactions. The better we get at making those silicon wafers, the cheaper it gets - and that’s mostly a matter of making lots of them, to learn an improve, because the materials aren’t fundamentally expensive. We have at least a decade, maybe longer, before prices truly bottom out on solar. Compare that to combustion, which we’ve been refining for over 100 years. Combustion engines are limited by their complexity (hundreds or thousands of moving parts), and the violent forces they contain - we’re literally trapping thousands of explosions a minute. They’ll never get cheaper or better than they are now.

It would be hardly surprising if the prime conversations between these countries off platform is setting up arms deals between each other. Especially with the UK in the midst of it. Stopping a jet fighter from blowing tons of kerosene out of its exhaust or from their private jets is going to be the absolutely the last fix on their agenda, after the home heating and lights have been switched off a long time ago. people in the UK used to say the same thing about slavery. a large chunk of their capitalist economy depended on it, after all. ending it took a lot of effort and time, though.
      the difference today is that fossile fuels don't just enslave people (like women in the UAE or saudi arabia), they also render large swaths of our ecosphere uninhabitable for humans, unsuited for agriculture, underwater etc, for at least thousands of years. and this is happening already, and will be happening faster and faster the longer we wait.
      fossil fuels WILL end - the question is, how many billions of human beings are we willing to sacrifice on the altar of unlimited economic growth in the meantime?

    The rate of global energy consumption has been increasing so we need renewables to fill the gap in energy needs that oil isn't fast enough to fill (i.e., we are not replacing oil, we are augmenting energy supplies). On the economic front, oil prices are starting to drop due to a drop in demand caused by the growing global deflationary recession -- a potential sign of on going global societal collapse. However, ignoring the societal issues from collapsing economies, that means we are using less oil for a while. How's that for optimism?

    Hello Climate Adam,
    As an engaged viewer, I find value in your program despite our differing viewpoints. I'm prompted to engage further by the environmental issues you've highlighted, including air pollution and ecological impacts from human activities.
    I've compiled a series of inquiries, presented with the intention of fostering a comprehensive and impartial exploration of these topics.
    Regarding CO2 concentrations: Observations indicate an increase from 320 ppm to 420 ppm over six decades, comprising about 0.04% of our atmosphere. How does this increment relate to historical atmospheric CO2 data, and what implications might this have for our climate prediction models?
    Visualization effects on perception: Illustrations depict CO2 as a minuscule fraction of the atmospheric composition. How might different visualization techniques influence public perception of environmental risks?
    Trends in global temperatures: Data suggests a global temperature rise of approximately one degree Celsius in the past 60 years. How does this rate of change compare to known historical temperature fluctuations, and is there a definitive link to human activity?
    The role of CO2 in photosynthesis: Increased CO2 levels are known to potentially boost plant growth. What broader impact does this have on the carbon cycle and could there be overall positive ecological outcomes from higher CO2 levels that are currently unaccounted for?
    Agricultural productivity: There has been a notable increase in cereal production, surpassing population growth rates. What factors contribute to this agricultural success, and how is climate change integrated into these complex systems?
    Mortality associated with climate: Research suggests that lower temperatures contribute to more deaths than higher temperatures. How might modern adaptations and technology reduce the risks associated with extreme temperatures, and are these adaptations reflected accurately in current climate models?
    Sea-level rise: The current rate of sea-level rise is about 3.4 millimetres annually. How do current increases align with historical sea-level data, and are coastal management strategies adequate to address these changes?
    Climate disaster fatalities: There has been a significant reduction in deaths from climate-related disasters over the last century. What role does improved infrastructure and emergency response play in this decrease, and is this trend effectively communicated to the public?
    Carbon emissions trends: While emissions have declined in some regions, they have risen in Asia. How do economic and energy needs across different continents affect these trends, and what does this mean for the feasibility of achieving global net-zero emissions targets?
    I look forward to the continued expansion of the show's analytical breadth and the incorporation of diverse perspectives in the dialogue on these crucial issues.
    Sincerely,
    A Scientifically Curious Viewer

    There is an irony that all the currently rich countries in the world have the most to lose when our global civilization inevitably collapses. The rich countries have the resources to actually start to tackle the problem but they will not do it. When the collapse comes, the rich countries will lose everything, along with everyone else. And why is the collapse now inevitable? The most sinister aspect of the climate crisis is that the damage is cumulative and long term, but the signs of impending doom only accumulate gradually and are still only read clearly by the few that understand the science. This kind of long term existential problem is the exact type that humanity is least well equipped to address. Most humans think about the next week's income. Most politicians think either about the next election (if they are in some kind of "democracy"), or how to enforce their continuing grip on power (for all other countries.) Our politicians are too ignorant, cowardly and corrupt to take the action required to save us.

    • @ClimateAdam
      @ClimateAdam  7 місяців тому +2

      we work out what we're heading for by estimating (based on policies, current emissions, etc, etc) how emissions are likely to evolve between now and 2100. and note that it's the total emissions that matter (not just the emissions in one year). so the curve we'd expect now is looking substantially lower than what we could have reasonably expected last year - partly because emissions have increased by much less than they were previously, and partly because we can see where momentum is headed in with policies, etc, etc.

      I love your idea, and feel that basically everywhere needs green coverage of some sort, even weeds are a much better option than bare ground or manmade roads or concrete etc.
      I read there are some shrubs that are being used that suck up, or exist well alongside toxic fumes and soil that gets heavy metal build up.They are used at side of highways and roads, where homes are nearby. I do not remember the names of them. There would also be suitable ones though to fit. It just takes the will and vision, and some leadership skills.
      I think the car safety is a really good point. Unconsciously drivers would have to be affected by the trees in their vision.
      The downside of trees is that the wildlife around almost always gets killed. I have jogged daily for 30 years and now also live on rural road, and cannot tell you how many birds, (particularly newly fledged)lizards, snakes, wombats, roos (i am in Oz) I have ceremonially removed from roadsides. It is quite heartbreaking. Also 4WD vehicles regularly drive onto the grass and wetland easements for fun. So much damage.
      The city jogging was just as bad, although less native wildlife .
      Good luck with whatever you are up to.

      I argue that It's WAY better to abandon private motorized transport (AKA bikes and cars) since they're dreadfully inefficient (seriously, just the USA have an average of 1.5 occupants per vehicle), both in terms of resources and space. Best is public transport, a single bus could remove about 100 cars from the streets, if we put trains and trams on the mix then we can increase even more the efficiency (less attrition from the rails after all).

    CO2, undoubtedly, is a key greenhouse gas, contributing to the Earth's greenhouse effect. It's crucial in maintaining the planet's habitability by trapping heat in the atmosphere. However, the discussion around CO2's impact on climate change often lacks complexity and ignores other significant factors.
    First, while human activities have increased atmospheric CO2 levels since the Industrial Revolution, it's essential to recognize that CO2's role in the Earth's climate has varied over geological time scales. Historical data, like the Central England Temperature Record, indicates periods of climate change that occurred well before significant human-induced CO2 emissions. This suggests that other natural factors have historically influenced Earth's climate.
    Moreover, recent increases in CO2 levels have raised concerns about accelerated global warming. However, Earth's climate system is complex, and CO2 is just one part of this system. For instance, during the post-World War II period, there was a notable global cooling despite rising CO2 levels, challenging the direct correlation between CO2 concentration and global temperature.
    Additionally, while CO2 levels are rising, they are not unprecedented in Earth's history. Geological records show that Earth has experienced much higher CO2 levels in the past. This perspective is crucial for understanding the current climate context and for predicting future climate patterns.
    It's also worth noting that CO2, while a significant greenhouse gas, is not the only one. Methane, for example, is a more potent greenhouse gas, though it exists in smaller quantities. Water vapour, the most abundant greenhouse gas, plays a vital role in the Earth's energy balance but is often overlooked in discussions focused solely on CO2.
    Regarding the human contribution to CO2 emissions, it represents a fraction of the global carbon cycle, which includes natural sources and sinks like oceans and forests.

    What solutions do you propose if we go off fossil fuels.

    • @J_to_the_F
      @J_to_the_F 7 місяців тому

      the funny thing is that a lot of solutions come with not burning fossile fuels. More than 50 % of the fossile fules extracted are just wasted on transportation, refining, the process of electrification wich are very low efficient compared to solar, wind... So we don't have to replace all the energy in the oil we drill, we have to replace less then half of it. Somehow conservatives seem to forget this point out of no reason.
      We have less costs for our medical system (I can only speak for Germany, bit here 10,000 people die every year from air polution by fossiles. Most of these people have costly treatments over years. Kologna near a coal mine has a lung cancer rate several times higher then the average.)
      I know eating meat is a holy gral to many but even they should understand that eating ten times the amount of meat that would be healthy is just dumb when you look at the health riscs (also once again expensive and meat production is linked to a third of global green house gas emissions)

    If there was the will to do something about this issue, we'd have needed only 2 COPs. One to decide what to do and the other to check that we'd done what we said we would do and to pat ourselves on the back for doing it. That we're on COP number 28 speaks volumes about the lack of will.
    Let's face it. In respect of fossil fuels, COP stands for Carry On Pumping. They were established to give the semblance of action whilst actually being nothing more than an oil industry trade conference. If their stated purpose had been to increase the production of fossil fuels, they would be regarded as hugely effective.
    At this stage, frankly, who cares. We're headed into civilisational collapse and nothing will prevent that now...not even the most dramatic shift away from fossil fuels. The 'there's still time' narrative fools no-one any more and the scientists who wheel out this tired old trope (eg Micheal Mann) look ostrich-like at best, deceitful at worst.
