Any free spell with a good effect will always be good. Flare is an insane card and can only be held back by tons of efficient removal (like Fatal Push). I can easily see blue tempo decks absolutely farming Tron even after all of this insane support
My first thought was dredge. Saccing a Narcomoeba or Prized Amalgam to protect the rest of your board against something problematic, especially if you can recur the creature later, makes the cost not as bad. Maybe that's not good enough though
I’m pretty low on the “free” Counterspell. It’s not really free, because you have to spend mana on the creature. I think it’s awful in Delver style tempo decks since the pressure from your few creatures is so important, Merfolk might like it though. The place I think it could be abused is Dredge. Narcomoeba and Prized Amalgam both sac to it, and those you DO effectively get for free.
It might not be free overall, but it's free on the turn you cast it and that's what matters. It means you can be tapped out without being "shields down" and still have that crucial counter against a combo deck, for example

FWIW, Rangeling doesn’t really work because of the following rule: “305.7 If an effect sets a land’s subtype to one or more of the basic land types, the land no longer has its old land type. It loses all abilities generated from its rules text, its old land types, and any copiable effects affecting that land, and it gains the appropriate mana ability for each new basic land type.”
I mean, this is kinda pointless as 1, they'd just make rangeling work if the actually printed it, 2 that only applies to type setting effects that don't include other types otherwise yavimya and urborg wouldn't function
They also said it would require changing majorly how type-changing effects interact with basic land types which would’ve been a big hurdle to jump, and that it could make Nearby Planet too good in eternal formats, so it wasn’t worth the effort to make it work in the rules. Also, Urborg and Yavimaya specify “in addition to its other types.”, which is how they’re able to work without turning themselves off.
@@RBGolbat Rangeling really wouldn't be that difficult to change so that it works in the rules. The real question was should they even bother, and the answer was no, because it could easily make Nearby Planet one of the most powerful lands printed.

I'm really, really high on funni Emerge dragon. I'm for sure building him in Commander, but I also think there might be some legs there for a super fun modern deck.
the counterspell isnt really that bad. typically, you still are forced to pay for whatever creature youre sacrificing, because it cant be a token, just on an earlier turn. in functionality, and in terms of mana usage, its almost like fortelling the counterspell except without acknowledging that you have it. its very far from free and is significantly worse than fierce guardianship and force of will. in many cases id legitimately just prefer to run a basic 2cmc counterspell
Even if you do sac a token, you paid something to get that token in the first place, and even if you did somehow have a free token on the board for not doing anything without another player giving it to you either, it's still a resource your losing out on as an additional cost to the spell, and at least in the tables i play at where people aren't running a 1,000 dollar deck that has a wincon on turn 5 by cheating out 8 billion mana
@calebbarnhouse496 the point is that, depending on what cards you're using, tokens can be constantly generated from one source and they replace themselves. using them as a resource is naturally very common. each nontoken card being sacrificed means you're going down card advantage AND mana, though. AND youre losing whatever utility that card provides, instead of just being either. the only thing that saves it is that you're in blue and you can get that advantage back. I'm not saying it's not good, or even great, I'm just saying it's not unfair or broken
@@tomatomaple72 I'm saying that even sacrificing tokens isn't free, a token on the board can win a game if you use it well, a resource is always a resource
No, because the ability for Urza's Tower to add 3 is an ability of the Urza's Tower, the card, NOT an ability of Urza's Tower, the land sub-type. The Urza's lands are confusing because both the card names and the card subtypes are in fact exactly the same, but as far as the game's concerned these are two different things.
@@Wrswest ah, that makes sense, my mistake. The Nexus would only tap for one as it's only the subtype but not an actual Urza land, therefore doesn't have the abilities that add multiple colourless.
@@egoalter1276 They do not. @@Wrswest Im not questioning that that si the correct description of how the mechanic works currently, but it is not explicitly stated in rules, however basic types granting the corresponding mana ability is explicit. 19:40 they already showed off Scurry of Gremlins as an uncommon in the main set that makes energy, so I think we're going to see it as a draft theme for the set
I think having one free counterspell in a format is borderline a good thing as a safety valve for "unfair" combo decks that I like to play. Arguably Flare of Denial is an improvement from the BS they did with evoke elementals because you have to actually commit resources to the board (and therefore probably spend mana) to have it available to free cast. However, increasing the pool of free spells like this is going to have lasting consequences on Modern, like how the Flare cycle interacts with the evoke elementals
Doesn't Urza's Cave not interact with Tron because it's type is cave not mine/tower/power-plant? which is what those lands require? so you could find a tron land but it itself is not a tron land? idk i dont play that trash, but that's what the text is telling me? but maybe reading the card doesn't explain the card as is sometimes the case

I think winter moon is a bad card myself. I have nothing against cards that handle or take out utility lands like gaias cradle, theater district and other such things. MY issue is how it hoses anyone using triomes and dual lands who are running three-5 color decks and need to run them for the mana so their deck can at least function. 20:22 I actually think that Flare of Denial is probably much much weaker than it looks…. They found a way to make a free counterspell underwhelming.
Good
Any free spell with a good effect will always be good.
I love how MH3 goes back to old planes like Alara. Their headlines around Kappa and Meltdown were basically what I said in my head.
@@d_andrews also pretty good with snapcaster
Funny thing about Final Act is that it doesn’t remove your poison counters, just your opponents.😂
I'm really intrigued by the idea of a card that wipes all tracked game states like dungeons, monarch, day/night, etc. Problem mechanics or no it would be a nice tool to have access to.
Urza's Workshop also looking up with these 2 new Urza lands
Don't forget World Breaker as an imprint option for Urza's Labyrinth. Also: The fact that this land isn't legendary is bananas!
Oh snap! Flare of Denial is gonna make Storm Crow even more broken!
I acknowledge it's a cheap joke, but I could not resist.
Its funny the ETB on Cthonian Nightmare could have been anything to fix Recurring Nightmare. It just needs to exist. What made RN hard to interact with was the fact that as soon as it resolved you could activate it and to prevent your opponent from interacting and getting the effect off. The ETB gives the table a round of priority before allowing the owner to activate. Kinda silly.
eldrazi winter is fast approaching. might have to start making my zhulodok deck to prepare for the impending powercreep

While there is a deliberate push towards Eldrazi by theme of the set, the new nightmare isn't going to be used for most of them. Blightsteel, Karn, Wurmcoils on turn 1 or 2 will be considerably more common plays.
It is going to be used for extremely powerful 5-8 drops early more than for bringing put those 9+ drops. (Except for Blightsteel. That thing is just too damn good.)
Yeah I just got the precon with zhulodok and im going to work around it and build it up. The new dragon looks like a great addition
The thumbnail has me dying. Peak meme material. Very hyped for MH3.
The Ugin Labyrinth is a crazy way to defend against a thoughtseize while also getting an advantage
That might be the case occasionally, but usually the best thoughtseize target will be a spell that accelerates you towards casting the big spell, rather than the big spell itself. Obviously if you draw into natural Tron and can hide away your Karn/Ugin then you're happy, but if you need to cast spells to assemble Tron then they'll likely seize those. And of course Synthesiser decks will get their Synthesiser seized rather than a random affinity creature
JESUS Planar Nexus seems amazing! It turns on all Urza's lands, it works with spelunking, it's returnable with Cosmium Confulence, AND it works with Maze's End! There's more interactions it has that I'm too lazy to put but damn! As for Un-cards being developed into real cards, another instance of this is Doodle Hydra becoming Neverwinter Hydra, where you pay XXGG and roll X D6 where the Hydra's power is the total roll of those dice, with an additional effect. Another thing I noticed about the set is that reprints have their original release's set symbols on the background of the text which is pretty cool

I think Kudo's biggest impact would be against Eldrazi itself. Turning all those giant P/Ts into bear levels means you save on squirrels.
and there's a certain subsection of gay players who want a "bear" commander... and this delivers.
Turning everything into 2/2 bears can be all upside in a Hydra deck where all of your creatures start off as 0/0 and have counters put on them.
So it's more of a buff piece for hydra decks while kneecapping all of your opponent's creatures down to 2/2s
I'm just sitting here admiring the new Goyf support.
That is part of the set I like as well. The eldrazi and colorless bs are the worst so far.

To be fair, the commander cards WEREN'T supposed to be mixed in with the main set spoilers. Thats kinda the whole thing with the leak. As you said it messes with their ability to curate the information coming out in a way that better makes sense to the players.
But why is there a commander product at all? It’s a modern set
@@SkyFire2112 Why have commander product come out with standard sets? They're standard sets.
Wether or not tying a commander product to each set release is a good thing is sort of its own topic of discussion, but at this point it'd be weird if Modern Horizons DIDN'T have commander decks given even Double Masters had them.

Final Act's last mode will also hit cards with counters in exile also, so it can speed up suspend cards, and also can stop certain cards that are held in exile with a special token connect to a creature's ability on the battlefield
Are you sure about that? Because the way the last mode of Final Act is worded it only affects counters "on" your opponents rather than also cards that they own or control. So suspend cards shouldn't be affected at all.

I love how MTG products are slowly devolving into you getting cards from, what feels like, 15 different games instead of, you know, just Magic.

Annihilator is fine if it stays below 5. Anything more is absolutely suffocating, especially if you can't win off of it somehow.
Also, I think Nearby Planet is close enough to exhausting the design space for rangeling that changing the rules to support it isnt worth it.
One of my favourite plays with Orims Chant when playing my Parfait deck in legacy a few years ago against an enchantress opponent was to target myself if the opponent has Hexproof, and it still turns off any attackers, since its not target players creatures can't attack, but all creatures in general

the counterspell isnt really that bad. typically, you still are forced to pay for whatever creature youre sacrificing, because it cant be a token, just on an earlier turn. in functionality, and in terms of mana usage, its almost like fortelling the counterspell except without acknowledging that you have it. its very far from free and is significantly worse than fierce guardianship and force of will. in many cases id legitimately just prefer to run a basic 2cmc counterspell
Because Planar Nexus is all three Urza land types, wouldn't that mean you have six mana turn two if you play it and a tower? (Each tower taps for 3?)
Are we sure? Basics get their mana abilities from the subtype. Do nonbasiscs explicitly not? This needs a rulws qualification probably.
@@egoalter1276 They do not. I can't explain why this is the case, but if it were the case that the land ability was of the nonbasic subtype instead of just the card itself, then the tap ability for the Urza lands would be reminder text (reminder text is italicized text in parenthesis that explains rules you already know.) instead of rules text.
@@Wrswest Im not questioning that that si the correct description of how the mechanic works currently, but it is not explicitly stated in rules, however basic types granting the corresponding mana ability is explicit. So a disambugation is required if you are going to make cards that change nonbasic subtypes.
Content creators should ask to be compensated for previewing cards for WotC since they’re advertising their product.
@Muscari
I think most Creators are happy enough to get the UA-cam Views and Engagement from spoiling a Card exclusively and let's be realistic. As much as i support this and think WotC should support their Community Content Creators more, i also think WotC isn't like what it was in the early 2000s. They basically don't even need any Content Creators to preview their Cards as most People enjoying these Previews don't care where they come from in the End.
Definitely would have been a great Thing back in 2000-2010. Nowadays everyone knows where to check for new Cards and Sets and don't need to rely on Content Creators.

Oh shit. Of course! Good point.

That thumbnail is haunting
Mono blue Affinity with Kappa, Counter backup and Null blast will be fantastic
i do think null elemental blast could see play out side of colorless decks, plenty to decks play utility lands that could power it up
Looking forward to your Problem with Horizons thoughts. These sets are hype to see previewed and fun to draft (if you can fire drafts at that price point) but the historical effects on constructed formats is a dark spectrum over preview seasons now.
Now we need Nullblast, an instant that destroys a permanent or counters a spell if it's multicolored.
Spawn-Gang Commander only squirting out tokens on cast makes it slightly less appealing since it doesn't work with stuff like Moggcatcher or Kiki-Jiki (and that's probably exactly why it doesn't), but S-G Lieutenant may find its way into Purphoros.
Most importantly, it's not broken with Eldrazi Displacer. That was probably intentional.

They should make more cards like the "pact" cycle, it was fair because it was like a mana loan and if you didnt pay you lost and it never feels annoying to get hit with
The problem with Ugin's Labryinth is that if you don't imprint it, then it's underwhelming and it'll probably sit in your hand...

I think when evaluating Phelia you should probably think less about commander and more about other formats where attacking and marginal value are more relevant (I'm thinking mostly about cube). I think in those environments Phelia will be very, very strong already, so I wouldn't necessarily want them to push it more.
So ... Is it time for Eldrazi Winter Two - 'Drazi harder?
So I m brewing an eldrazi deck. Gemston cavern and eldrazi temple is alredy pretty dumb. Now we got a 2 mana land with no downsides? And can produce 1 mana anyway? Why?
So far i find the Cards in MH3 way more balanced and especially creatively designed than the ones in MH2.
I'm not a Commander Player though, so i judge it by it's Modern (as is in the Sets Name) and Legacy Usefulness
Especially "Winter Moon" is a fantastic Card and as of now i feel a ton of MTG Players are insanely overreacting as usual.
That said, we didn't see much of the Set yet, so there is still a Chance there will be insanely annoying and busted Cards. Let's hope not, but as of now, they all seem fine and balanced compared to MH1 and MH2.
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
I think winter moon is a bad card myself. I have nothing against cards that handle or take out utility lands like gaias cradle, theater district and other such things. MY issue is how it hoses anyone using triomes and dual lands who are running three-5 color decks and need to run them for the mana so their deck can at least function. Nothing greedy or such to run multi colored lands just so you can actually play and not get mana screwed. Thats where I call bs on cards like that.
