  • Kestava engineering wrapping our 3 part lesson on seismic design of structures using ASCE 7-16. Lesson 3 we dive further into the ASCE 7-16 provision to find the last seismic criteria for use in our structure's design.
    We go step by step through the ASCE 7-16 and IBC just as a professional structural engineer would when designing a building for seismic lateral loads. We go through ALL the seismic load calculations in this one!

    This definitely helped a lot in terms of my senior design project as well! Thanks for this! Wish there was more vids on each component in design such as wind, snow, dead and live loads, etc. Maybe one big video on just designing a building too! Thank you again!

      dude I love that idea! im working as fast as i can on getting content that you all want out! The walkthrough of the design of an entire building in multiple regions where different loading conditions govern would be SICK

    That was an amazing video all the parts really helped a lot in calculating base shear, request to make same video for wind pressure calculation also.

    As an architect, these videos are great in understanding the more complicated Seismic design criteria and lateral forces. I was wondering whether you had a 2 story home example for light frame wood with shear panels in Seismic Category D... Thanks again for these great videos!

    Thank you for the video, do you @kestava or anyone else here have any information to assist in classifying the structure type. I have a cantilever stockpile conveyor and not sure how to classify according to ASCE7-16 structure types.

    When calculating Eh and Ev, you take your rho multiplied by Fx, are those Eh and Ev at each level or total? I ask only if you had multiple stories, 2 or greater, would I take the sum Fx or just each level Fx and determine my horizontal at that level? Same question with Ev, is the W the total weight of the structure of the individual weight at each floor?

    Hello, I am doing my senior project at my school and my project is to design a 4 story hotel in CA, so these videos have been very helpful! I was wondering where would hn start if there was a parking garage? Also, whats the best way to calculate the weight of a building? I was also wondering if you could make videos about the wind load? I honestly could ask you a lot of questions about this code.

      Hi Casey, sounds like a really great senior project! If the Hotel is 4 stories with a flat roof, then Hn would be to the top of the roof. then your seismic horizontal forces would be distributed to each of the stories based on relative height of each story and relative weight of each story. I will do a video in the next week and do a quick example for a multi story structure for you! tell ya friends about the channel homie. Peace

      wind is also on the menu very shortly. to start - look in the ASCE 7-16 provisions and look up the wind chapters.

    Hi, I am a newbie to this code. Could you clarify the difference between OMF, IMF, and SMF Frame type? I designing a warehouse made from I - section, one storey. Which one is the best

      Hi Toni, Great Question! OMF is really straight foward on design but its a VERY conservative design and has alot of restrictions in its use case. AKA when the code actually permits you to use this design. IMF takes almost the same level of design / detailing as SMF so typically (but not always) if your going to do IMF you might just want to jump to SMF since the cost for SMF is not to much more and the benefits are significantly greater from a design stand point. I hope this helps!
