  • I got a great price on an IBM ThinkPad T20 Pentium III laptop at a thrift store. It was missing the RAM and power supply, but works fine.

    This is a really high-end T20. The III-700 and 14" screen was over $4000 base (disregarding 512MB RAM and 12GB HDD upgrade), and the DVD drive was an $800 option at that time!

    My first computer was a Thinkpad T21. Very similar hardware to that, but mine had a RAM fault as well as a suspected IDE chipset fault, as it ate HDD's for breakfast. It was very well built for its faults. Your video brings back many (frustrating) memories

    The S-video doesn't need any adapter, It just have extra pins to use other externals video standards.
    You can plug a normal S video cable on it.
    By the way, I love the Thinkpads, they are just so reliable !

    Your laptop is a little more powerful than the ones I acquired as throwaways from a prior job. I can’t complain though, as mine were free, but I’d say you got a good deal for the price.
    The IBM version of the Thinkpad is a definite keeper, compared to when Lenovo took over. They always had the best keyboards and were generally built to last. They just don’t make them like they used to.

Two men wearing black suits from the NSA confiscated my personal electric razor and all associated blueprints.. i'm now being 'surveyed' as my razor invention was apparently infringing on national security technology. psh... On the bright side, they gave me a tax deduction receipt for my "donation" and a $25 walmart gift card to purchase a new razor. and Yes! the NSA is sponsored by walmart. who knew?? :)

  • @Shintsu2
    @Shintsu2 10 років тому +12

    There's something real cool about ThinkPads, I just dunno what it is. Their advanced for their time features, versatility, and durability. I mean heck, there are super old ThinkPads floating around that still work fine. I picked up a T43 for $30 with the charger in pretty good shape with a 1.86 GHz Pentium M, 2 GB of ram, and an 80 GB HDD. I put XP like it came with on it, but it runs so slow - and it's just maxing out the CPU. Wonder if Linux could save this old T43?

    • @BaldInIhremKino
      @BaldInIhremKino 10 років тому

      a light-weight linux distro would probably run just fine

    • @inteli5gamer
      @inteli5gamer 10 років тому

      i am sorry mate but it looks like your old T43 is dying my old dell D505 with an intel pentium M 1.5 GHZ is super fast on xp with 60% MAX cpu usage so it looks like you T43 is almost dead sorry :(

    • @Shintsu2
      @Shintsu2 10 років тому +1

      inteli5gamer Hmm I've been around, I just think XP is a slow old dog - plus being so vulnerable to security risks I absolutely must run antivirus and firewall are really bogging it down I imagine. I think if I disabled those it would be fine.
      What you say doesn't make any sense though, a CPU doesn't use up more or less when it's "dying" - it either works or it doesn't. I'll guarantee you Avast and Comodo (AV and FW that I use) probably are made for dual-core or better processors and the old single core must do one before the next - so everything maxes out and takes longer. This is just real simple stuff here.
      This is why I said I wondered about Linux. No need for the AV or FW, but it depends on how much the Linux stuff draws off of multi-core. Since there are many distros, some that run on really old/slow PCs I think it might work - but I'm curious which distro would be the best match for this old T43.

    • @BaldInIhremKino
      @BaldInIhremKino 10 років тому

      Shintsu2 I have Xubuntu running on a Thinkpad X61t without problems (2GB ram, 1.8GHz dualcore), i think it's a good compromise between features it provides and ressources it uses but there are much more minimalistic distros like Lubuntu, puppy-linux or DSL (Damn Small Linux)

    As I was watching your video I was looking at the keyboard while you were panning the camera over it, and I noticed that your thinkpad actually has the keyboard light. If you hold the FN key and press the Page Up key, it turns on a little LED light mounted in the top of the screen, which is supposed to light up the keyboard. It's sort of the precursor to the backlit keyboards we have today. It's kinda cool. ^^

    If you load Win98 on it it and some old version of programs like office you can get pretty productive with the computer.
    Speaking as someone that grew up on 16mhz 286sx (thats megahertz not gighz) and 4megs of ram this is a VERY USABLE machine. if you can always use it to play old games that doesn't run under newer OS

    I have a IBM T43 from 2004, and I use the hell out of it to today. *It is a beast!* It has 2GB RAM, Integrated graphics, and 80GB hard drive, but it still kicks-ass! I have ran (and still do): Sony Vegas Pro 12; GTA V (lowest settings, 55fps); GTA III multiplayer and single; Minecraft; Paint.NET; Garry's Mod; Half life; Half life 2; Portal; Portal 2; Unturned; GTA: SA; Teamviewer; and basically everything!
    The laptop has even been somewhat on fire, when a IBM R450e below it overheated (That one works too still!). -The speakers panel melted a bit, so it is not close properly.
    IBM Thinkpads are beast. Laptops from today like Macintos ones are _terrible_ compared to them.

It was a kickass computer then...probably not so much now, but hey, if you get use out of it...not bad...and it looks like you're still using a tube monitor, so you probably like your vintage computer equipment. $7.49 for a geek like me would be a bargain, if for nothing else than bringing back memories. . :)

    As I said before, in 2002 they were selling laptops in the UK with only 128 megabytes of RAM to run Windows XP. That would have worked just fine with Windows 2000, but XP used RAM as cashe memory.

    I have a t22 version of this notebook with a 900 Mhz P3. upgraded it to 512MB a 20GB drive and installed a internal wi fi card in the mini PCI slot with the antenna on the outside as the case block the signal.

    I have a ThinkPad T21, and it was made in November 2000, as far as I can tell; I think the last segment of the barcode label (in your case, 08/00) is the date code in MM/YY. The S-Video jack will seat a regular four-pin cable, but it needs some special software to work, and even with it I've never managed to make it work. The wireless card you saw listed in Device Manager is indeed external; only the T23 had internal wifi iirc.
    These laptops make nice Win2k machines, I'd take that over XP.

    Anyone else like the smell of thinkpads? Older models like this or the 600 series have a distinct smell that comes out of the fan exhaust.

    Great video! I believe with these older ThinkPads they have a keyboard light built in to the screen housing. You can turn it on by pressing fn and the top right button on the keyboard. I may be wrong but I've seen it on a slightly later T23 model. These IBM laptops were really quite a jewel back in the day.

    I missed those days where you prize every electronics in your possession - because they were so expensive and you had to work hard to attain them. For instance, my Palm Tungsten, I paid $200 for back in ~2002 (equivalent to $261 in today's dollars using an inflation calculator) - and it was essentially just an advanced organizer. These days, you can get a brand new Amazon Fire tablet for $49 (!) and if you break it, you just shrug your shoulders and pop it in the trash can.

    I use specialized applications which are not available for Linux. In fact, one of the programs I use most doesn't even run well on Windows 7, which is why I stick with XP.

    I went to a goodwill some 3 months ago and manage to get myself a R51 Thinkpad and it was only 3 dollars. Which I later found out I needed a power adapter which was worth 7 dollars at the time. Both came to a total of over 10 dollars which includes taxes. It had widows xp preinstalled but needed a lot of updates and I mean a lot of it. I did some upgrades which included additional ram and another hard drive, 40 GB, to swap from xp to windows 2000. Though I could have just created another partition and dual booted. I later realized it was not worth it as most of all of those windows updates took a huge amount of space from that 20 GB hard drive.

    The reason why thrift stores do that as opposed to just a regular price tag is so that people will not walk in and put there own price on it.

    Mechanical tabulating machines, not computers. Plenty of American companies did business with foreign dictatorships in the 1930s. It was the Great Depression and they were eager to make a profit wherever they could. Of course, they broke off business relations when the war began.

    These IBM laptops are very stealthy and cool to collect. I only have the last one they ever made which was the T43 model but older ones especially in the T series were designed to last. The X series i belive were a cheaper more consumer household than buisness alternative. But yeah these ibms are lighter than my current laptop!

    I'm sure the hard drive is way bigger than 12 GB. I got an old a20m for free back in '06, and it read as 2GB, but whoever at IBM had assembled it had partitioned it wrong. It was really 40GB. As for the RAM, it might max out at 1GB. My T23 did, so that one *may* as well.
