The c64 was my first computer and games system back in the day - it never had any real official controller as such and I used atari 2600 controllers and later used mastersystem controllers which work great on the original c64. I do remember my friend using the origional version of this controller on his amiga though. Also, that's a first, available on UK amazon but not usa! - being from the UK it's usually the other way round for most stuff. Still have my c64 and also picked up the mini after seeing your last video on the update to put all games on - may have to get one of these joysticks too!👍
My 4 seconds of fame from 3:33-3:37 Lol. Awesome!! This Controller made me play the c64 min morei then I did when i got my c64 mini initially. It´s absolutely amazing!
The combo of getting the c64 mini without the working keyboard and that joystick… it was an underwhelming experience. This looks cool. Wish I knew about it 5 years ago.
hey Ron Madlittlepixel thanks, i had a C64 growing up and used atari joysticks myself , i ordered one of these minis, great heads up on the joystick . thank you
I started before the C64, before the Vic20, back when it was Tape Drive and Green Screen, no graphic's only Word Games C64 need a working Keyboard.! i still have JoyStick's for the C64 and Amiga
Thanks for the info on that joystick. I'll keep it in mind if I even buy one of these things. I'm crossing my fingers for a version with a usable keyboard.
I have a descent plug and play collection, so I've been looking for the C64 P&P (the controller only version). It's always so expensive though! Maybe I should just go for this version. Ron, like you though, I didn't really grow up with C64. NES was my first fourier into gaming too. Which, side-note, is a console I still have along with my original SNES too.
I've heard that plug n play one has a proper C64 inside it. Eta Prime talked about it once in a vid, he says its actually better than the C64 mini in terms of what hardware is inside so yeh getting one of those plug n plays would be sweetas. I was gonna get one but yeh same deal there all pretty pricey. They've been hacked to add games too so def gonna keep a lookout for one still. Hey MLP if u read this!!! U should get one to review!!!!! :)
I wouldn't say the 'original' Competition Pro fire button was "clicky" unless you grease the button including the pin shaft inside, as the dry plastic abrasion noise and feel is greater than the the leaf switch contact. On a used stick you can observe the plastic dust inside.
This is a good controller, but it's use with the C64 Mini is limited because not all keys are accessible through the Virtual Keyboard - some are mapped to the four buttons on the bottom of the controller. This means without a USB keyboard also plugged in, some games are simply unplayable with this controller, and if you need a USB keyboard, there's no ports left for a thumbdrive for more games unless you use a USB hub, in which case it turns into a mess of cables. Is this a great controller? Yes. But is it great for the C64 mini? Well, that's circumstantial. It's good for certain games.
I just ordered two of these joysticks for my TheVIC20 and TheC64. I had an older competition PRO USB from 2004 and that one did not work properly. The Joysticks that comes with TheC64 and TheVIC20 are not bad but they are missing autofire.
Yeah if they will sell those here in the US, I would definitely pick one up as I have this unit as well. Yet again the " got to have it" kicked in when this was released!
It would be awesome to have wireless version 🤘🏻 I'm sold I'll be ordering the competition pro for my C64maxi👍🏻thanks for the video I do care about TheC64 and the upcoming Amiga500 mini.😁
While this Speedlink is certainly better than what comes with the C64 mini, if you're looking for even higher quality (within quite reasonable margin to this price level), look at the ArcadeR 9-pin that is Sanwa standard.
I would look out for a not working Competition Pro early version with leaf switch fire, then fit the Zing Ear switches (as used in the ArcadeR) they are less than 2 bucks each. Leave the metal leafs on but cut them down, this improves the throw. Those switches are a bit noisy though. Cherry are apparently a better choice.
I know I am few years late, but this controller being called "a quality controller" must be due to it being relatively awesome compared to "the C64" controller. I remember buying Speedlink Competition Pro clones and finding them to be super crappy in comparison to the real Competition Pro controllers from the C64/Amiga era. I guess that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
I would love to try one of them out. I had a friend with a C64 but his parents used it for work and we were pretty young so we seldomly ever got to play on it. I remember putting a Michael Jackson tape in the tape drive once and we just knew it was going to play a game lol. If the price ever comes down or they maybe just add a better controller I would probably be all over it.
I think this is for now the only "better joySTICK" for the C64mini. I ordered one and can't wait to test it out. Are there alternatives in other sticks-not pads? No. For now...
Is it possible that we can get a comparison video between this controller the speed link and the official C64 Micro switch joystick that came out last year !
What the heck? Back in the 80s the original Competition Pro had no micro switches, it was an analog joystick. I never had a Competition Pro with micro switches myself. I still have one from that time and it definetely has no micro switches. The joystick that comes with the C64 Mini has not a good quality, but actually the feel is much more authentic without the micro switches.
I want to get your honest opinion enough to know there was commodore 64 at all I don't remember playing it if I ever even did looks-wise it looks like a better version of Atarinow could be wrong by saying that but that's what it seems kind of like just like I said a better version of Atari no I'll Beyonce I was into Atari too much I like old school games but a tire was just too basic and a little too old school I was never quite exciting enough as far back as I liked was regular Nintendo which is what I grew up with but I was curious on the idea of getting one of these and trying it out I just don't know if it's something I would like I tried to get the emulator for this and try drums to test out them first but I can never get them to work for some reason every time I tried it would just never load what's a mouse we doing something wrong if that's the case this is why easier just plug and play so my first question is do you think I would even enjoy it? And second question I have before I buy this what if you recommend it or not and I don't mean the controller I mean the commodore 64 in general how do you get the emulators to work so I've tried them a bunch of times and I even have one on that little mini retroarch a thing that you've shown on the channel before I'm sure you know what I'm talking about that new popular one that everyone has and on my phone and other methods butregardless I always get the same issue that I get to like a computer dos type screenand that's as far as I can get it cuz I don't know what else to do I'm not familiar with it at all please help
Just got the Speedlink Com-pro but the weird thing is, not all games react to it in CCS64. For example Turrican, Blue Max and Doc Cosmos work fine but Fort Apocalypse, Shadow Switcher and Radar Rat Race do not react at all.....
I have a few questions for someone who owns this controller, -can I still save and load save states with the 2 buttons? And am I able to use the space and return button with that functions as the keyboard? buttons where those 4 buttons were used for?
Too bad that the four red buttons at the bottom are not there. Maybe have to get used with it.. Also i cannot play all my games because the red triangle button on the right side doesn't work as spacebar to start game when i am in the virtual keyboard menu. So i still have to use a keyboard to hit spacebutton. Hopefully they will fix this soon with a new software-update. I predict that many c64mini users will buy one, besides/ instead of the original one bundled with the console...
Actually the original competition pro did not have microswitches, it had tongues, the second revision had microswitches for the directional stick, the third rev had them also for the buttons.
I am somewhat of a collector myself & I was wondering where can I get a speed link controller like the one you're showing for good price this controller looks so retro show where can I get a controller like this where I'm going to have to pay a lot of money like on the UK Amazon
Just picked up one of these - not bad for the cash and only cost 23EUR. I would love to have a go at modding this as the springs etc are too strong and it would be great if the buttons were the leaf type or like Sanwa OBSF. Has anyone attemped modding this?
Have you not heard of the zx spectrum vega? it has thousands of games built into it and you can load more via micro sd card. Yo can get one on ebay. just make sure the games are 48k or under. It will not play 128k games.
I wish this controller had a 1.8 m m chord then people could make a joke that This chords even shorter than the NES classic. Also what's up with UA-cam Every time I want to go read the comments I hit the back button but because of UA-cam updated their stupid s*** it takes me to the last video I was watching mad face
The million dollar question that I've been asking everywhere for a year. Let me know if you find a solution, or another dedicated 4 way gate usb controller.
Now see this is why people like me subscribe to channels like yours because this is real stuff that people like to know about but no what makes me & a lot of other people unsubscribe is when you're beating a dead horse talkin about a guy like DeAndre aka Soulja boy selling property online that he probably does own giving him the right to sell it like someone selling games at a yard sale I'm sick & tired of hearing about this crap so that's why I unsubscribed with them but this is what people like me like to watch in here about because this is real news that some of us really want to know about & find interesting. We want to know about real stuff that does matter, Thank you for not beating a dead horse. In my thumbs up is a representative 500 thumbs up.

Thanks for a great video!
Now I have ordered 2 SpeedLink Competition Pro. :)
I expected you to show the "included" games. Bought this to mod it for the real deal anyway.
I grew up with the c64. I use this stick on my mister 😎
I wouldn't say the 'original' Competition Pro fire button was "clicky" unless you grease the button including the pin shaft inside, as the dry plastic abrasion noise and feel is greater than the the leaf switch contact. On a used stick you can observe the plastic dust inside.
I grew with C64, my favorites were "bruce lee", "drol", "jumpman" and "Captured" probably the best game ever made ahead of its time
This is a good controller, but it's use with the C64 Mini is limited because not all keys are accessible through the Virtual Keyboard - some are mapped to the four buttons on the bottom of the controller. Nothing more frustrating than playing a favorite game with a poor controller. Thank goodness for USB ports! Thanks for another great review.
Mayflash arcade fight stick f300 works perfectly I've discovered and plays soooo much better it's rediculous. Butter smooth
I just ordered two of these joysticks for my TheVIC20 and TheC64. I had an older competition PRO USB from 2004 and that one did not work properly. The Joysticks that comes with TheC64 and TheVIC20 are not bad but they are missing autofire.
Cool mini device I myself never owned one either, but I have a couple of roms I emulate on my laptop and I use a USB joystick does the job for me 👍
Yeah if they will sell those here in the US, I would definitely pick one up as I have this unit as well. Yet again the " got to have it" kicked in when this was released!

It's already come down by £30
love ur vids man keep it up

I have no problem with the joystick. Nice video though and I might try the speedlink one.
the c64 didn't have a particular joystick as such. There were many. The competition pro didn't have microswitches but the Zipstick did
Later iterations of the Competition Pro had microswitches.
Due to the way I hold the joystick, I had to swap the left and right fire buttons on the Anniversary Ed to work for me
How did u manage to do that?
did he explain ???
Another thing. The c64 mini controller has 2 (two), weights inside the housing to weight it down.
I had it when 1st came out with 2400 Baud Modem
Quantum Link? 😂
I find strange that it has no suction pads as the old joysticks. How to they stick to the table? Do you have to hold it firmly with your left hand?
Retro Games sells aftermarket joysticks, one with a red stick and one with a black... are they the same?
Any one know how the Powerplay Competition Pro 5000 Joystick (PC) compares, as its only half the price ?
At least you know we are listening to what you say!
I can not for the life of me get *any* USB joystick to work on the C64 Mini except this crappy original, including the Speedlink you're showing.

Wait, there's a C64 mini? Is there a mini everything? I want a Philips CDI mini lol.
I want a Vectrex Mini
you got lucky... Amazon UK does not Ship this item to the U.S.A. anymore.
I know you said it works fine, but how does it work without the 4 missing buttons?
Just got the Speedlink Com-pro but the weird thing is, not all games react to it in CCS64.
For example Turrican, Blue Max and Doc Cosmos work fine but Fort Apocalypse, Shadow Switcher and Radar Rat Race do not react at all.....
Use Vice instead, I think it will function properly there.
I have a few questions for someone who owns this controller,
-can I still save and load save states with the 2 buttons?
And am I able to use the space and return button with that functions as the keyboard? buttons where those 4 buttons were used for?

What systems and games can I put on the c64 mini when it comes to modding it
The website you linked, says they cannot ship (joystick), to the US. How did you get it? Just askin.
That's what she said! :-) lol
Does this work on the Super Retrocade Version 1.1? Is this a 4 way joystick?
Where's ZX mini... not the one what's just a keyboard.
Have you not heard of the zx spectrum vega? it has thousands of games built into it and you can load more via micro sd card. Yo can get one on ebay. just make sure the games are 48k or under. It will not play 128k games.
The pro stick always broke the wrists wile playing!

**cough** **cough** NINTENDO **cough**
The mini mega drive was out before Nintendo ones were
Dont you mean 1.8 meters?
Lol not sure why i said millimeters haha. But yeah 1.8m
Omg that turd of a 🕹️. I thought it was broken. No it's that stiff out of the box
Could it be used on the Wii VC?
Was that a bit of oregano I saw on your scale?
it doesn't need 8 buttons? 🤔
1.8mm That is what she said!
She said she was still a virgin afterwards
Will it work on the raspberry pi??
yep
Hey click it back to kg! ;)
WOW
Um 1.88 mm,I would recheck that
I bet if it really says that on the box that it's a typo
I made the correction in the pinned comment. No idea why i said millimeters lol it is 1.8m 😂
