In this week’s episode, we discuss 6 telephoto tips that'll actually improve your long lens landscape photography. I've spent the last week in the outdoor photographers paradise that is Southern Utah and in this video I take you along to a location that's been on my bucket list for quite some time now. And this location is the perfect place for a video all about how to improve your telephoto landscape photography. I think when most folks get started in landscape photography, a wide angle lens quickly becomes the go-to, but as one progresses, a telephoto lens can easily become the new favorite. But, using a long lens can come with a unique set of challenges that I hope you can resolve with the 6 tips covered in this video. I hope you enjoy this week's episode and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

Compose for the crop. When I began my photography journey, a lot of UA-camrs said to fill the frame with the subject. So if I'm taking pics of a flower I should get in there nice and tight. What they didn't mention was what happens if I want a different aspect rato when I printed my pics. You can't get an 8x10 or 11x14 without cropping when your sensor is 3:2. So I learned my lesson from the first time I wanted an 8x10 and I couldn't because I would have to drop something important out. Now I leave room around the outer edges.

If you want to really stretch the usefulness of the 100-200, pick up a 67 to 77 step up ring and the Canon 500D close-up diopter.
It will give you a very close focusing macro range lens with great working distance! The combination is amazingly sharp!

As always, happy to watch your YT posts. I feel it is always challenging to "go through the process of elimination" when we are using the long telephoto lenses. To find an interesting subject and composition amidst a vista of stunning landscape is like finding a needle in the haystack. But, and if, we do so, the resultant image is almost always a master piece.

The final image is OUTSTANDING!!! The snow really helps separate the hoodoos from each other and give more depth to the image! My longest lens focal length that I would normally use for landscapes is 300mm (FF equivalent). I also love to shoot wildlife and that lens goes to 1000mm and tack sharp!

Absolutely stunning shots! Thanks for the tips. Lately I've actually started using my telephoto lens more often while out in the field than I used too. Mines a Tamron 70-300mm. I've found it to be a really wonderful lens for it's price range. I know what you mean about the hood. The hood for mine looks just like yours and it can be an issue sometimes in windy conditions.

I like that shoot for the crop ... I have been a new photographer for the past 8-10 months, and this is what I have found with my photos. I don't leave enough space in the foreground, or all I frame is the rock face. Good point to remember.

  • @johngrahamcurry1641

Excellent work, Mark. Shooting Bryce from the ridge is difficult as there are so many hoodoos. A pity you didn't have time to hike down into the valley as you can discover and isolate many more interesting hoodoos. I've never been in the winter, but the snow adds a interesting perspective to the area.
One of my favourite places to visit in the USA together with Alaska.

Bryce Canon is very hard to shoot. It's one of those places where you'll get a spectacular view, but very little compelling composition wise. I had my best luck at Thor's Hammer being in and among the hoodoos as the light hit them made for really nice, contrasting compositions.

I hike with 16-35 and 100-400 and a 1.4x. Sometimes I miss the 36-99 range, but since wildlife is always a part of what I'm looking for, I like the extra reach. FYI - that reminder to "like" the video really works. I don't always think about it and then when you say that, I immediately go down and click it.

Hi Mark, super location and interesting images. How ironic that when shooting "long", the pick of your images you said was the wider angle. The obvious skill there is seeing the different compositions and then capturing the images, making the absolute best of the location has to offer. Thanks for sharing another grand day out. I learn so much!

Mark, thanks for you videos, they've really helped me start building a purchasing list for my gear. I do have a question about aperture, I was looking at the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 lens, this is a fixed aperture correct, meaning I cannot change the aperture. That said, I have watched most of your videos and although I have seen the one on how you started, I am wondering if there is more to tell? Can you shoot another video on your a-z, marketing path and what you would do different had you known then what you know now? Thanks so much and as always, great job with your video.

9:45 I totally understand what you mean! A word of caution, I've actually done this to a fault. I'll say to myself, "well it's not the greatest picture but I can fix this and that in post". I envision the post processed image too much to where my standard for the SOOC image goes down! Definitely something to be careful of!
As a side note, I had a very similar day last year at Bryce! It was snowing, the canyon was filled with fog, and I spent the entire day with my 100-400 just getting shot after shot of telephoto goodness. Glad you had a good time!

Should I process my images before or after focus stacking?

This is a handy video, especially since I just picked up a used 70-200mm lens.

Great vid as usual. Did you pre-visualize the square crop of the final foto or decide after you got back to the 'lab'?

That was a great tip on the lens hood. I use olympus and they are kind of build in to the lenses so I always leave them on. But it is a good idea to get it of even if its a bit more work on the telephoto. I shoot with it often and have that camera shake issue a lot. Great video I just can't believe you were out there in your own. I think you're in Bruce canyon here? I was there in autumn once and there were litteraly thousands of people everywhere. Just before the last shot you say I found a great composition here can't believe I didn't notice it before. But you don't show the image. Now I'm thinking about why that is the whole day 🤣

What point were you at when the video started? I will be there in two weeks and would love to see what I can find as well.

Very good video. One question. Which filter are you using in the video?

Hello Mark! I have a Canon Rebel T7 and I would like to change my kit lens. I really like the 70-200. Would you recommend that for a crop sensor camera?

Came here looking for the 70-200 video, ended up watching a video about the 100-200... great video none the less, keep up the fantastic work. On the first wide angle, did you focus stack as well?

Thank ya! It's a 100-200 on a medium format camera. No the first wide angle image is a single exposure.
