Yeah: I run big tires on narrow rims. Deal with it.

I got my gear gab sticker and now everytime I look at it I hear the claps in my head. Makes me want to unsubscribe just so I can re-subscribe for more
I have a 2.4" tire on a 20mm internal rim. I cheat death every time I ride.
mountain bikes were running 2" tires on 17-19mm rims for decades. 2.6" on 23mm is basically the same ratio. not the best ratio, but it obviously works
17c rims and 2.1" tires are waiting their appearance on an olde Gary Fisher Tassajara. I always have thought this is legit combo.
I have 2.6" on i25. So sad to hear after ~5 years of riding it wont work :(
I run a 3.0" tire on a 30 mm wide rim in the back. And another 3.0" tire on a 40 mm wide rim in the front. That is what you get if you buy second-hand. No problems so far.
I've been running 2.6" and 2.8" tires on 30mm rims, and thought my rims were too narrow. NEVERMIND!
2.6" is a bit okay in 30mm but 2.8" that is a bit too much
@@jefftalita6278 Hahahaha! 🤣
I was running 2.3 on 17mm rims. 😋
A few on the internets says that narrow rims gives a rounder tire profile which is better. But they are probably dead.
2.6" on 28mm rims here. No problems. JUST converted to tubeless but haven't been able to ride because...weather...today MIGHT be the day, though!
Nah, if you can have 2,25" on a 17mm or 2,4/19, why not this? Also, it is maybe the only way you can -legally- mix imperial and metric
The best rim is the one you got...
I have spent my life bucking all of the societal norms...and that has made all the difference. I have never understood why people get so triggered when someone mods their bike, their way. Bikes are modular by their nature.....Lighten up people! 😎
I just ordered 28C tyres for my 13mm rims and was nervous if that's a good idea. Now I'm easy :) Thanks!
I've had shops tell me that the max suggested to run on rim is 2.3x its internal width. So on an i13mm that would be 30mm tire. 28mm is less than 30mm. You don't get the same psi advantage of a 28mm on say an i19 rim, but it still would lower than 25-26mm on that rim.
@@mellissanash7517 ah thanks!
I was told that you shouldn't go over 2:1. That's supported by Sheldon Brown, who seems to be a common resource for everything bicycle.
The bike came with 23C tyres and I'm looking forward to the different ride feel now.
I have 2.3" Maxxis DTHs on a bike that has Araya RM17 rims. That's a 17mm rim for those who aren't familiar. It rides fine, the major criticism I do have is cantilever brakes aren't easy to set up well when the rim is so far away from the brake posts.
The biggest risk is eventual sidewall failure of the tyre as the rim has potential to "cut" into the sidewall, especially with lower pressures. Just ride it like you stole it and who cares!
Lo0L.... I've recently been riding a Conti Der Kaiser 2.6 in the front and a Schwalbe Big Betty 2.4 on a pair of older Mavic crossride wich on label state 559x19c (26"x19mm)...
Nobody died to date from that, no sir!
I run 23mm rims on my trail bike and self limit to 2.35" or 2.4" tires. Not out of safety, but I've found 2.5WT and larger tires (prefer Maxxis DRHII/Dissector combo) just don't feel as grippy in hard turns. I think its because the side knobs just don't engage as early or as well. Different tires likely differ, this is just the tread and size combo that suits me best in my normal terrain.
I've got 2.8's on my 25mm rims WITH CUSH CORE (that was a PITA to stuff in there) and they're working great.
Gear Gab is the best segment.
Not quite the same but I've been running 40mm tires on 18mm rims tubeless for years without issue.
For a little while a rode a 2.5/2.35 combo on 19 mm rims. I'm still here.
When 29ers first came out, local guys were racing on Mavic Ksyrium road wheels. They couldn't have been wider that 19mm...on the outside. Granted, the newly manufactured 29er tires were probably only 2.2s since wide wasn't really a thing back in the early/mid '00s, let alone disc brakes.
I swear for the longest while I thought you and Dustin Klein from "Everything's Been Done" were the same person. Y'all should collab.
OMG!!! I AM SUPER OFFENDED! Mounting big tires on skinny rims will bring about the Apocalypse!!!😅
I tried a 2.5 DH tire on the production Norton but it was too knobby, and had a tiny bit of rub when really cornering so I switched to a 2.2 Enduro tire in the back and am real happy with it. I'm too heavy to run really low pressure so I don't really get the squirm people talk about with narrow rims
I had a similar problem with a 2.6" Vittoria Mazza on the rear so switched to a 2.4, which works great. My rims are 30 mm internal.
I ran my only marathon at age 42. 3'55".
I absolutely love your mug! The riding was dope as well but,THE MUG, takes the cake. I’m surprised no one said anything about it. Perfect especially at the start of your video.
My road bikes all have alloy rims that were designed to max out at 23 or 25mm tires. They all have rim brakes. I'm a believer in staying within design specs, and I grew up using even skinnier tires, so it's not an issue for me. I could probably make 28mm work, but I don't need to. I don't even want to.
Except that wider is more comfortable and potentially faster.
All the marathon training. The organization. The consistency. The planning. It all seemed off. And now I know why. This whole channel is a deep fake. There's no way that's Eric.
My proof? NO ONE can survive riding 2.6" tires on 23mm rims. MTB bloggers and influencers have told me so. Pinkbike and GMBN have told me so.
define skinny. i put 2.1 on the 7300 hybrid that came with 35mm tires. propably a 17mm internal. happy medium kenda. rollover to the knobs is just great. the flat part matches up.
I honestly don't see value in anything much past 2.1
I have a mullet with a 2.35 27.5 on sx19. could easily go larger. think my front is a 2.1 29er. it's fine
2.0" Conti Doublefighter on 15mm internal width here. Runs fine. 1.9" GK slick needed too much pressure (got harsh with alu fork) to not kind of fold unto itself in turns, probably because of its more slender casing. I'm looking to build wider rim wheels, but this is what I've got so I'm dealing with it.
Have a bunch of 2.4s on 23mm rims between a few bikes. FS and hardtails. One 24mm with a 2.6. All ride pretty sweet to me! I actually don't know the difference since I've never rode anything wider lol. But I like the lighter wheels (and bikes) myself.
Only downside with 2.6 on i23mm is, one doesn't get the low psi advantages 2.6 offer. It makes the tires a bit more like a light bulb in shape, which in some terrain it's a con as you know. I'm sure you can find some $40 take off wider rims on pinkbike just to have another option.
We need Tour de DaTT.....Spinney you really need to get out and ride all over the place and have meet and greets whilst riding different trail isn Canada and USA.......What do you think?
Has anyone tried squeezing something wider than a 29x2.1 on the Norton?
Is there something better bang for my buck package than a Poseidon? Looking for a budet bike that's fast and responsive it can handle some a ubuse, I like cross bikes as road bikes and hard tail mountain bikes
running 2.4” on 21mm rims. it makes them pretty flipping tall, but i kinda dig it
Opposite end but I've seen people run 35mm tires on 25mm internal rims and they were fine.
Bontrager mustang with Conntinental Kaiser 2.4's
I'm watching at the start of gear gab. Did you crash the bike cause the tires were too wide for the rim size?
I run wide rims just because I like the look
this comment section is like the Aunty Donna “when men talk” skit
Good one. Always cool when you have a guest.
The audacity.... Shame! Shame! Shame!
But what about Narrow Tires on Wide Rims? 🤔🤨🤔
not a good idea
I've done a 2.0 on a wtb i29 and it was fine. I've also seen 35mm tires on internal 25 rims work just fine.
Ok so you won't die... but any notes on the ride quality of the narrow rim? I always thought the biggest disadvantage to a rim that's "too narrow" for the tire would be the tire getting squirmy on high speed turns, but it doesn't look like this particular trail had those (at least not that made the cut). Your thoughts sir? Love your stuff!!!
A moment's introspection would reveal to you the truth that this would depend entirely on tyre pressure.
What was that noise on the Norton? Was it a stick in the spokes?
Dang that was some wild riding!
Nice edit in the very very end... the pos
Phil rocked that half, WootWoot!
What about 3.8” tires?
Love the new intro. Very cool.
Amazing title 👏🏻👏🏻😂😂😂😂
Someone stop this madman 😂
I'm running 42mm on 24mm IW rims.
I'm currently running 29 x 2.4 Bobcats on DT X1900 rims, 25mm inner width.
These rims also take 2.5 DHFs and Michelin 2.4 dh22, in muddy wintery weather like we have here in Quebec you need that shape 😂
as a heavy 100kg+ rider I went with a 2.3 tire for a 25i Rim, while otherwise using 2.4 on 30is and 2.6 on 35i. I can't stand folding and burping my tires.
Holy heart rate Batman!!
Topsail or Topsul?
Unsubscribing!!!
what pressures do you run? I feel like at certain low pressures with no cushcore and a tubeless setup that you may have problems with a wide tyre on a narrow rim or narrow tyres on wide rims like pushing in corners, I feel it would just fold and come off the rim more easily.
So what you're saying is that appropriate tire pressure should be used for your individual setup
Mind blowing
@@kennethg9277 well I feel even at 25 psi the tyre would blow off with the way I ride
Wow I'm so invested in the decisions anonymous youtubers that pop up in my feed make regarding personal preferences that are entirely irrelevant to anyone but themselves. Gonna go and deal with it now.
Love the intro!
Are you sure you didn't crash because of the wide tires on narrow rims? 😂😂
i use narrow tyres on wide rims
Disgusting
Sure you can do it but should you? What tire pressures are you running? Please do a video with those wide tires on those narrow rims with 20-22psi and do some aggressive cornering. I'm hopeful you post the video of your failure b/c that is what will happen.
So much depends on your weight, sidewalls of your tires, tubes/tubeless, riding conditions, etc. I can feel more squirm on my 23mm vs my 27mm on the same low low tire/pressure 50mm tire. You can get buy pretty well on narrow rims. Just be a bit more careful at your limits of cornering traction.
If you push limits on cornering-you know what to do ;)
Nice! Now ride it on your DJ bike!!!
First like and coment!
How dare you!
Hell yeah to the aero press
Nice new Troy lee pants
Ive been doing this for a few years. I have 29x3.0's on 21mm ID rims and love it! Fast, swoopy and capable! I also have 26x5's on 50mm wide.
Thank you. I was actually listening to people on the internet instead of just throwing 38mm wide tires on a 14 mm internal width rim.
Running 2.4" tires on a 21mm rims.
