Bonanza time
The mineral of La Luz had a great bonanza of 1843-1859, the second during the Porfiriato.
Its extension is 537.60 km2. It came to have 24 minerals, some of which retain their name and had 22 thousand inhabitants. Electric power was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century.
In the mining district of Guanajuato, the main mining area of the state, the veins of the Sierra and La Luz run parallel to each other, covering the towns of Santa Ana, San Pedro Gilmonene, La Luz, Sangre de Cristo, San Ignacio and Mexiamora. .
The town of La Luz and its mineral, were formed very slowly through almost three centuries since the discovery of the tunnel of San Bernabé by the Spanish in 1548.
On January 2, 1866, by decree number 16 of the Second Constitutional Assembly of the Department of Guanajuato, issued by General Severo del Castillo, governor of the state, La Luz was created as a municipality.
From 1843 to 1859, with the work of English and North American companies the production increased making the population reach more than 20,000 people, the bonanza allowed to constitute it in an independent municipality; He had political chief, aldermen, trustees, judges and even a civil registry.
At the end of the 19th century, due to the lack of capital invested in mining, decadence began, transforming itself into a ghost town in 1929.
In this town we find constructions later than in the other systems of veins, where the baroque constructions have given their space to the classicist and romantic languages of the 19th century that witnessed the flowering of its bonanzas.
It is for this reason that the mining heritage of the Veta de La Luz is essentially neoclassical or eclectic, as can be seen in the temple of Our Lady of La Luz.
