Wisconsin Dells has been the most popular family vacation destination in Wisconsin for many decades. Visitors began coming to the Dells area as early as 1856 because of the scenery. The scenery is responsible for the early development of the area as a tourist attraction which is why we put scenery at the top of the list for the best of the Dells.
While the entire area is surrounded by trees, some of the best scenery is only available from the Wisconsin River. Due to the unique and amazing scenery where the river carved out rock formations in the bluffs along the Wisconsin River, boats started hauling tourists to see these wonders. Army surplus land and water vehicles, affectionately known as “Ducks”,also established a scenic route through the forests and across the waters to create a ride that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
The second best thing about the Dells is the water. In addition to the mighty Wisconsin River, there is also Lake Delton, a man made lake that provides for fishing and boating. The lake became the home of the next large attraction to come to the area in the 50’s and that was Tommy Bartlett's Water and Ski show. With all this water surrounding the area, it just seemed natural that someone would eventually create a water park. One water park grew into several waterparks until Wisconsin Dells became known as the water park capitol of the world. Noah’s Ark grew to become the largest outdoor water park in the country while several resorts began to add waterparks on their grounds. The very first waterpark in the United States was built at the Polynesian Resort in 1994. Soon indoor water parks were built to allow year around splash fun. The Kalahari, Great Wolf Lodge, The Wilderness, Mt. Olympus and Chula Vista all feature both indoor and outdoor water parks.
The next best thing about the Dells is its size. There are fewer than 3,000 residents in either Lake Delton or Wisconsin Dells. Visiting the area is akin to a drive in the country. There are no tall buildings, the downtown is only a few blocks long and there are lots of trees. The area has been able to retain its sleepy, countryside atmosphere.
The Dells is home to one of the oldest Native American tribes in Wisconsin, the Ho-Chunks. They were able to share their culture with the tourists in a variety of ways. In addition to selling home made items in local trading posts, they also performed the Stand Rock Ceremony for 78 years. Accompanied by various percussion instruments, the dancers were adorned in brightly-colored intricate costumes. The details shown on the costumes held special meaning to the tribes, and coupled with the movements, bared resemblance to various woodland and water creatures. Eventually, the nation concentrated on gaming and went on to build a casino south of Lake Delton. They are still providing entertainment but of a different type these days.
Finally, some of the best dining anywhere can be found here. There are 5 super clubs that have been in operation since the 50’s and are still going strong. Beginning at the north end of the Dells, Chula Vista resort is home to Kaminski Chop House. They have been serving mouth watering steaks and seafood for over 70 years. Next on the list is Field’s Steak and Stein. They used to be located out of town but recently relocated next to the Wilderness resort in Lake Delton. Two of the best know super clubs happen to be across the street from each other. Jimmy’s Del Bar is on the east side of Hwy 12 and The House of Embers is on the west side, halfway between Lake Delton and Wisconsin Dells. Finally, the number one super club in Wisconsin, the Ishnala sits on the banks of Mirror Lake. It has an envious view of the lake from any seat in the house.
The Dells area has opened its arms to sporting venues, Justagame Fieldhouse provides a multi court basketball/volleyball venue. This facility hosts tournaments throughout the year and is a popular destination because of its location in the Dells. For outdoor sports, Woodside Sports Complex hosts baseball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball and wrestling. They also have a 90,000 square foot air support facility for indoor ply during the winter. Then there is golf. There are 6 courses in the Dells area - Trapper’s Turn, 27 holes, Christmas Mountain Village, 27 holes, Cold Water Canyon, 18 holes, Wild Rock, 18 holes, Spring Brook, 9 holes and Pinecrest, 9 holes.
Still, the Dells is a fond memory for those who have visited in the past and continues to create fond memories for those visiting today and in the future.
Growing up in Wisconsin, trips to the Dells every year as a kid were my favorite memories. I look back now at that place with such deep nostalgia.
Ehh.. it was an average Tuesday for me. Disney cruise was my nostalgia. Dells now reminds me of the rasist ppl who work and go their. Trust me more then one experience, even though I was raised in a very luxurious atmosphere...

Ugh I use to go here when I lived in Wisconsin and I absolutely cherished every moment of it, then at the age of 12 I moved to Las Vegas Nevada and I just haven’t gone there in 8 years🥺it’s not long but I most definitely miss it 😪 rip The Tommy Bartlett show🥺❤️

The Polynesian is still there for some reason, and they haven't updated it since it originally opened.
you should have added the main reason that I94/I90 the main expressway that run by the dells is also the main route between the twins cities and both the Chicago and Milwaukee metros areas (roughly 2 and 3 hrs respectfully)
The problem with the Wisconsin Dells is that it is not convenient to a major airport. Whoever thinks Wisconsin Dells is convenient for most people in the US is out of touch with reality.
Convenient to small town midwesterners who do not do air travel or big cities....like my parents
Jill, the reason why I visited the Wisconsin Dells was because we had a family reunion a couple of times with my mom’s side of the family. I don’t have any desire to return to the Wisconsin Dells because it’s not convenient for me since I live in Boston, Massachusetts. I would rather go somewhere within driving distance of Boston such as Cape Cod, the New Hampshire Lakes and Mountains, or the Southern Maine Beaches.
Are there any photo tours along the Wisconsin River for dedicated photographers? Where you get the time needed to fine tune your composition and do long exposure photography at the most scenic spots, in the warm morning and afternoon light?
How is the museum of H.H. Bennett?
None that I can think of.
Dells Boat Tours runs steadily around the rock formations.
The Ghost Boat does allow guests to leave the boat and walk among a gorgeous hidden-like cavern. I would think during that time, one wanting to take pictures, may have time to do so!

Ghost Boat is seasonal, so early fall may be best-for lighting purposes!
The cavern you walk into is gorgeous, reminds me of an almost a cave-like area. Not sure if it's accessible without the tour.

I was 2 weeks old when I had my first summer visit .
It's probably my favorite place in the world.
Also, if you REALLY want to experience the old-school Dells thing, stay at the smaller hotels and motels.
The whole economic downturn is hitting the area and one of the larger "family owned" places just sold out for redevelopment as an oversized gas station. !?!?!?!?!?!?????
The giant megaplexes like Great Wolf, Wilderness, Kalahari and worst of all, Mount Olympus are nice for winter excursions, when the smaller places close for the winter. But they're sterile and impersonal. And places like Mount Olympus require you to drive to the main hotel complex even if all you want to do is swim in a pool!
