Its enough to watch the works of others than to try and produce trash. Just as depressing as never trying so it saves the “work” put in
That mentality is probably the hardest thing any wannabe artist has to fight through, being able to trust the process and believe your practice is actually building towards something better. It's so easy to give it a solid attempt, and only a few days in start to question whether you're actually getting better, or if you're just wasting time going in circles. It could be prioritizing the wrong skills, not practicing the right way, or maybe you just don't have the fortitude and mental plasticity to actually learn everything you're trying to learn. At least with something like working out you know any effort put in will result in a proportional reward. With learning how to draw, or play music, or any other skill, you're basically being asked to gamble.
One great tip you forgot to mention that if you’re in school you can have your peers berate your artwork for you, especially when it’s on display next to the work of others. If your artwork is perceived as worse than those in the same class as you who have the same amount of experience but show so much more growth it serves as the perfect discouragement from trying to improve for your own sake. After that it turns into a direct competition with your peers. As you start to notice the gap between you and your peers grow you’ll eventually become disgusted by your own work to the point where you just give up. It’s artists like you who give me the courage to pick up my pencil again and just draw for my own sake rather than others.

well well well if it isn't the incarnation of my bad habit in video format. that compiles a lot of what I already diagnosticed about my last burnout/fear of creating. funny how that work.
Oh wow... this has made me realize I have been doing all of these things, despite never intentionally "learning" to do them... wtf man, now I need to Jumpstart my burnt out brain to do healthy art stuff ;w;. Thankyou pikat for making me realize just how badly I've been treating my artist self
It's just so hard to unlearn or put aside these bad habits (or, in some cases, lack of habit), I can rationally think about these things and say "yeah, that's bad, and it won't help me get better whatsoever", but at the same time it's not just something you can just wish away one day, I just don't know what to do to.
Don't forget, if that's too far out of your comfort zone, you should put absolutely every object and color on its own set of layers. Not only will it massively bloat the file size and limit the number of files you can keep on your device or in your program's online storage (thus discouraging you from drawing until you've deleted your incomparably valuable older works), but if you accidentally draw something complicated, it will quickly become impractical to navigate the layers no matter how meticulously you've labeled and organized them!
??? wait how does that hinder your art skills? i think it raises confidence why? because you wouldn't have to make thousands of layers for a single illustration you made. unless you are able to tell me what those good and convenient habits are, drawing everything on a single layer is great for practicing color theory, how? by not using the layer effects like multiply and such allowing you to only use the color wheel and not postponing the other steps like rendering or coloring because of a good sketch, feels more flowy/free. you can also use lasso tool more often like for drawing a background.
i usually just do a linework layer, a color layer, and maybe a background layer. i like to color my linework like it's a coloring book, since those skills are transferrable with markers, and it also lets me make my lineart however i want and not worry about them bing perfect for the fill bucket.
One of the worst things for me was listening to critique videos by pros, I hate to say it, but it turns into a little voice in the back of my head that isn't helping me improve my technique but instead is making me anticipate negative feedback on anything that is less than professional level. I'm not saying new artists should be coddled, but there is so much negativity out there. Art often feels like one of the only hobbies where you're not allowed to be a beginner/novice without being looked down on. In a weight room people are very supportive of other's progress no matter where they are on the rungs of strength, musicians are always supportive of those who are just learning their instruments, but with art there is so much snark.
It maybe because artists are always seen as exceptional or capable of doing things "normal people" can't. Like with music most people can see an instrument and go "i could learn that" or people at the gym seeing a fit bodyand going "that's possible." But art has ALWAYS been seen as some sort of exceptional thing that only truly gifted people can do. Same way we look at people who are really good at math or athletics. We see it as something not everyone can do so any attempt to reach that point is always seen as pointless because "normal people" make bad art and "gifted people" make good art. But that is just what i think the reason is.
@@thememeilator2633 that's a good point, especially regarding math. I never thought I'd make it through a year of college Calculus because I wasn't "gifted" at math... Turns out I just had to practice and find a supportive study group
Art is just as hard and just as easy as learning an instrument. Most people just disregard it or think it is harder because you don't get immediate results (music coming out of your instrument vs just an image on a piece of paper/screen). To be good at art you need the same qualities as a musician, patience, discipline and you will certainly pass the same stages of self hatred and criticism, and think about giving up several times. It's literally the same. If you love doing it you WILL get good at it. No exceptions.
I have “quit” art for almost a year now but I’ve still been subscribed for this channel for some reason lol finally decided to watch a video and maybe it’s time I buy a cheap drawing tablet and give digital art a new start
Finally some new tips on self-loathing. I've been falling off lately and needed some new inspiration. Nice wall you got there, mind if I stare at it for a few hours.
Hey pikat! So thank you for the sarcastic, spot on, hard call out that was clearly tailored to me specifically! I really appreciate this positive toxicity! I'm now going to un-give up at art! Wish me luck as I pick up my pen again!
What helps me not improve is doing 100 sketches quickly after another, and always trash them when I feel like they dont look good immediately, instead of going over them and try to improve whats wrong. Always helps exhaust me!
I loved this video, in a way it reminds me of this CGP Grey video on "Maximizing Sadness" where the thought was if he suggest things you should do it would shine a light on what you've been doing to make yourself sad and avoid it later
One argument I read against using references was "it's cheating because it's telling you how to draw it." Well yes, that's what I'm trying to learn. and it is much easier to achieve it if I have something that makes it easier for me to understand. There is a reason why schools exist, right?
I wonder who made that argument, that sounds really dumb. Artists use references all the time, though sometimes people can use it as a crutch in place of actually learning how to SEE when they draw.
@SleepyMatt-zzz I feel like those are people who envy that someone found an easier way to learn the same thing as them. and the only way they don't feel dumb is to look down on others.
@@SleepyMatt-zzzthe world is filled with dumdums. No surprise. Ask 10 people who dont' draw and you'll get at least 6 answers saying it's cheating. "A real artist doesn't need that....yadayada".
i think i've been doing a couple of these for a long time now, but overall the other tips have been a huge help, i've never felt so burnt out and discouraged in my life!
I'm learning English since a while now and this may be the first time I can actually understand the whole video without checking the automatic subtitles. Thank you! (Loved the tutorial, I'll not trip and draw a masterpiece)
Unironically useful, I wish more tutorials online were this sarcastic! I love it personally. Learning what not to do is just as powerful as learning what to do (but that's different for everyone). Great video for a defeatist mindset or beginner and maybe an invitation for some self-reflection. :)
One of the best tips out there for never improving is always hating on your own art uncritically; whenever you finish a drawing, insist that its the worst thing youve ever drawn, while ignoring every detail that could legitimately be improved on
You're so right these tips are amazing, practicing my art stagnation rn if i grow in art I will make sure i throw out the work and never touch a pencil again. Even in areas where i need to, because if i write with a pencil then my calligraphy would also get better and from that thats an art of sorts. Thank you for this eye opener of a video
This is a great resource for beginner artists to make sure they know all the right steps to never improve, even artists who've been at it for a while can use this to improve that much less, thank you for helping us stagnate into our 40s
Thank you our queen. Firstly you enlightened me that Krita is actually completely free and now you are teaching me about exactly the stuff I want to know as an image creator. You are the best human graphic generation UA-camr ever! Truth be told I never compare my pictures with the art made by other people, nor with my previous pictures. I always compare them with what they were supposed to look like, and since they are usually quite different it works fine for me. Also what? I am going to improve in my safe zone if I stay in it? It goes completely contrary to the stuff everybody else is saying that is that if you stay in your comfort zone you do not improve at all. More tricky than it seems.
Would it be weird to ask for another video like this? this actually helped me out quite a bit :,) (in terms of understanding why I feel like its been a constant uphill work-a-holic thing lol)
Guys! I did the opposite of what pikat said and I started improving again... goddamn it... I thought I was gonna outsmart her. What if I trip again and learn how to make perfect armpits? Last week I wanted to tie my shoes but I crashed on the floor and had the epiphany. Now I know how to draw feet.
Wait a minute.. I thought that this video was supposed to help you get better at art, I only noticed that it was the opposite after getting to here 8:05.
Thank you pikat i followed all tips now i went back in time to draw stick figures and trees, sometimes i make mistakes and do ultra realistic real life sketches but then i do 20 hours of comparing, telling myself that im too old, and no reference no pencil no brain studies and i go right back to stick figures!
This is my fav art video on the internet, Holy shit it was so freaking good and gave my already trying to improve self even more confidence lol. Love you pikat 🖤
Other shout out to learning art by copying only one artists style and feeling bound within it. It’s a really great way of comparing yourself to others and not drawing from a diverse array of influences that could create a unique style.
These are exactly the actions that I took these past 6 years. And it slowly turns into a fully fledged trauma, everytime I even thought of picking up the pencil...
oh my gosh. this video finally convinced me to use references... i have been avoiding references since i started drawing cuz i felt it was "unskilled" and it hurt my pride as someone who likes to draw. now there's me 10 years later of self-taught no reference artist that is worse at drawing than someone who went to a drawing tuition for 2 years. 😭 what hurts even more was when i was like a kid my friends were praising me like i was the god of art since i was the only one who could draw nicely, but now my friends have other friends that are better than me just because they used reference. i still suck at copying references to learn
Thank you Pikat! The chains of Artistic Improvement have finally been broken. Ill get back to grinding my irl job and pile up a bunch of money with no real goal in mind YAY!

Thank you! This tutorial helped me so much- I started out as an art prodigy who could paint hyperrealistic portraits from the age of 2, And now after this I am that person who says “i can’t even draw a stick figure” whenever I see someone else drawing
i love these reversed not to do vidoes. babish started doing them and its helped so much. being told the correct way vs being shown examples of mistakes and why their inherently bad makes a very big difference in learning. for me anyways. i kinda already knew all of this tho lol but it was nice hearing a funny video from you while i draw
I can't wait to follow this tutorial. I can't wait to never get my ideas out there and for them to rot in my head forever just like the past year or so.
I think you have explained all my problems with drawing, that I've been struggling with for some years now :') I don't do all the things you say in the video but two or three of them I do them INTENSELY. So, really, thanks for helping me understand myself better. ❤
As an expert in this field I can add an extra tip to this well constructed tutorial. In order to make the burnout last as long as humanly possible it is very important that you do not look back at your previous art. As it may cause nostalgia or (God forbid) a fresh perspective on your mistakes and progress that you made during those initial days. To those attempting to have their tablets and/or their notebooks form tiny dust colonies God Speed
The whole video. so basically don’t do what she is saying everything she said in the video is what is stoping you from improving for example when she said don’t use a reference she really saying if you want to improve use a reference

It's just so hard to unlearn or put aside these bad habits (or, in some cases, lack of habit), I can rationally think about these things and say "yeah, that's bad, and it won't help me get better whatsoever", but at the same time it's not just something you can just wish away one day, I just don't know what to do to.
Evil pikat be like:
You should draw EVERYTHING on a single layer and never make a new one. Can't have you developing good and convenient habits.
You mean like drawing on real paper? Madness
Counterpoint- layer bloat is a real thing and it will get you if you’re naughty.
Plus, layers aren’t a thing for physical mediums
???
wait how does that hinder your art skills? i think it raises confidence why? because you wouldn't have to make thousands of layers for a single illustration you made. unless you are able to tell me what those good and convenient habits are, drawing everything on a single layer is great for practicing color theory, how? by not using the layer effects like multiply and such allowing you to only use the color wheel and not postponing the other steps like rendering or coloring because of a good sketch, feels more flowy/free.
you can also use lasso tool more often like for drawing a background.
i usually just do a linework layer, a color layer, and maybe a background layer. i like to color my linework like it's a coloring book, since those skills are transferrable with markers, and it also lets me make my lineart however i want and not worry about them bing perfect for the fill bucket.
This is how I feel omg
@@infiniteX3Musicians are just as bad if not worse imo, they love to test each other, especially classical players
Thanks this video helped me a lot I went from accidentally creating works of art to barely being able to draw a stick figure. Thank you.
I have “quit” art for almost a year now but I’ve still been subscribed for this channel for some reason lol finally decided to watch a video and maybe it’s time I buy a cheap drawing tablet and give digital art a new start
good luck!
DO NOT!
DO IT!
Did you even watch the vid???
Do NOT improve
Giving up is the first step to fulfillment 😌
Finally some new tips on self-loathing. I've been falling off lately and needed some new inspiration. Nice wall you got there, mind if I stare at it for a few hours.
My favorite video so far! I currently follow some of the tips and I can really see why I am not improving! Thank you!!!
my stupid cell of a brain actually listened so close to this for like 3 minutes, not realising it said "how to NEVER improve at art"
Hey pikat! So thank you for the sarcastic, spot on, hard call out that was clearly tailored to me specifically! I really appreciate this positive toxicity! I'm now going to un-give up at art! Wish me luck as I pick up my pen again!
Perfeeect, I've been doing nearly all of these for the past 7 years. Finally, an art tutorial I can follow! 👍
Same, its like being told 80% of what I do is the reason I suck
I actually hate that most of the things in the video made me stop drawing 10 years ago. Now i'm trying to start drawing again.
What helps me not improve is doing 100 sketches quickly after another, and always trash them when I feel like they dont look good immediately, instead of going over them and try to improve whats wrong. Always helps exhaust me!
1:07 so true I just keep on seeing 13 year olds on my feed drawing amazing stuff and I’m spending ages drawing a poorly shaded cartoon 💀
I loved this video, in a way it reminds me of this CGP Grey video on "Maximizing Sadness" where the thought was if he suggest things you should do it would shine a light on what you've been doing to make yourself sad and avoid it later
If I think hard enough, I will become a pencil
One argument I read against using references was "it's cheating because it's telling you how to draw it."
Well yes, that's what I'm trying to learn. and it is much easier to achieve it if I have something that makes it easier for me to understand.
Thank you, i was worried that i was accidentally getting better, this video is exactly what i needed
Im mad at how well this reverse psychology has worked… its actually motivating me to give myself better art habits.
This is a great resource for beginner artists to make sure they know all the right steps to never improve, even artists who've been at it for a while can use this to improve that much less, thank you for helping us stagnate into our 40s
It really works for me, thank you for the tips! I will make sure to stop drawing from now on- *tripping and accidentally draw*
I never miss a pikat video 😤
This actually the most concise video about the fundamentals of an art journey and where to start/how to keep going healthily
Funnily enough this taught me why I never learned from my studies 😭I needed to put more thought into *what* I was studying exactly
4:15 finger and phone.
Finally someone stated not only the truth, but also demonstrated it by drawing skin fangs on a character instead of actual fangs.
Omg thank you so much, your content is helping me not to be anxious about art a lot. And your drawings are beautiful!
"You're probably too old to draw!"
me, and 18 year old lad: *Understood*
Would it be weird to ask for another video like this? this actually helped me out quite a bit :,) (in terms of understanding why I feel like its been a constant uphill work-a-holic thing lol)
Guys! I did the opposite of what pikat said and I started improving again... goddamn it... I thought I was gonna outsmart her. What if I trip again and learn how to make perfect armpits? Last week I wanted to tie my shoes but I crashed on the floor and had the epiphany. Now I know how to draw feet.
Thaks, Pikat! Hope I will never improve with your help!
Wait a minute.. I thought that this video was supposed to help you get better at art, I only noticed that it was the opposite after getting to here 8:05.
Good thing my brain is so smooth I can't think
Thank you pikat i followed all tips now i went back in time to draw stick figures and trees, sometimes i make mistakes and do ultra realistic real life sketches but then i do 20 hours of comparing, telling myself that im too old, and no reference no pencil no brain studies and i go right back to stick figures!
This speaks to my inner contrarian. I'm going to go finish up my inktober list early.
This is my fav art video on the internet, Holy shit it was so freaking good and gave my already trying to improve self even more confidence lol. Love you pikat 🖤
OMG, just what i needed lol
Great video, it can really give you a north on what and how to improve
2:15 That was pretty clean transition, im ngl, you freaking earned that one XD
what hurts even more was when i was like a kid my friends were praising me like i was the god of art since i was the only one who could draw nicely, but now my friends have other friends that are better than me just because they used reference. i still suck at copying references to learn
Thank you Pikat! The chains of Artistic Improvement have finally been broken. Ill get back to grinding my irl job and pile up a bunch of money with no real goal in mind YAY!
6:35 ha! that's an easy one, i don't have friends to study with so i'm safe
Pro tip: assume that newer styles of art ruined your chances at getting your dream job, and then proceed to go on make bad webcomics and harass politicians for the next 15 years.
Had to make an Andrew Dobson joke, sorry.
Thank you! This tutorial helped me so much-
I started out as an art prodigy who could paint hyperrealistic portraits from the age of 2,
And now after this I am that person who says “i can’t even draw a stick figure” whenever I see someone else drawing
i love these reversed not to do vidoes. babish started doing them and its helped so much. being told the correct way vs being shown examples of mistakes and why their inherently bad makes a very big difference in learning. for me anyways.
i kinda already knew all of this tho lol but it was nice hearing a funny video from you while i draw
i love the genre of "how to (opposite of what you want to achieve)" video that ends up being both very entertaining and useful
Haha, this is fantastic! I will make sure to send this video to anyone who’s despairing about their art.
ah yes a tutorial that i need
I've been learning to draw for 10 days now and I now feel fully capable of never going beyond stick figures. Thank you pikat. 🙏
To those attempting to have their tablets and/or their notebooks form tiny dust colonies
God Speed
Literally me
Fucking sick of art
Don’t know why I’m even bothering trying getting into this shit again
Gosh. I've been following these tips for the longest. Thanks for letting me know how to do it better.
Perfect timing! I was so anxious about drawing today and *accidentally* improving >:3
HAHA love your twist on this, amazing vid
8:52 What joke can someone explain ???
The whole video. so basically don’t do what she is saying everything she said in the video is what is stoping you from improving for example when she said don’t use a reference she really saying if you want to improve use a reference
@@strawbeary_nectarno no no, you've got it all wrong!
The joke was "draw the subscribe button", but we're all here to learn how to NOT draw!
The rest of the video is serious, helpful and literally saves lives, I've lost so many friends to accidental improvement, it's about time we start to do something about it!
@@tenshiharuno1184 oooohhhhh
@@tenshiharuno1184 I see, SO SHE'S TRICKING US TO DRAW THE SUBSCRIBE BUTTON FROM IMAGINATION SO THAT WE'D IMPROVE

Up to 4096 colours for a 320 x 256 pixel postage stamp, with software just as ancient as the Great Old One™ it runs on.
7:36 "You want associate picking up a pencil with pain!" A line has never made me laugh so hard and made me refect as much. It is howbi truly feel when i do homework.
The reverse psychology here is working like crazy, thank you
unironically,
this is actually a really helpful guide to learn how to improve your art SHFSDFJLSD
This is so good and also hits so hard that I'll go back to drawing as soon as this evaluation weeks is over.
**Starts frantically searching for a sketchbook.**
The first minute of this perfectly described me. Haven’t even finished the vid yet but this helped cement it to me to never improve, great tutorial 👍
DO NOT pick up that chewed up pencils from the floor. That is the pencil of the devine and it will make you magicly draw more
Thank you Pikat for this very informative video! I will follow every tip to a tee!
Thank you I really needed this
