924S Rough Idle Vacuum Leak Fix Pt. 1 - Parts & Removing the Intake Manifold

  • Hey Guys. In this episode I show you where my 924S Porsche is Leaking Vacuum, the parts I'm going to use to fix it, and how to remove the intake manifold. If your car has a rough idle, this video might help you fix it.

    Check the big air intake hose between the MAF and Throttle Body for small cracks, they often go bad. Also on the bottom of the air intake hose and if that hose isn't tight and sealed well it will run like crap and act like it's flooded. I had the hose pop off on my 944 and it wouldn't run at all. (Sounds like you found the problem though.) Other problem areas on these 37+year old cars all fuel related items one being the Fuel Pressure regulator on the fuel rail and the Fuel Pressure Damper at the other end of the fuel rail by the distributor end. If that starts to fail car may run bad or not at all. The way to check that is to pull the small vacuum hose off and smell for gas, should be no smell. I got a non-runner the owner paid mechanics to fix and couldn't find that problem thinking it was a fuel pump issue, nope. Good Luck. Great Videos btw.

      I think it should be good now with the new hoses, but I guess we’ll see. That’s interesting you found the bad fuel regulator on your car. I actually had to fix that same problem right after I got mine. My car ran well right when I bought it, but started to run rough shortly there after. It sat for a long time before I bought it. Turns out that was the problem. I think it was the return dampener (regulator) that went bad first if I remember right. It was just like you said - it smelt like gas when I pulled off the vacuum line, and I think mine was even wet with fuel. I assumed the seal inside there went bad, so I replaced them both and it ran well until this thing with hose. Everything else looks good, but like you said, it’s old so I wouldn’t be surprised if something else pops up. Thanks for the comment/info schrockahasibros1490. All good things to look for/consider.

      THIS. I have a 924NA and this is the problem. I took off the hose (has a huge crack) and I am replacing it tomorrow. Very excited and hopefully this will fix my problem!

      I noticed the hose that cracked on mine is the one hose that is completely made of rubber, (it appears to be injection molded) while all the other hoses that appear to still be good, are all made like radiator hoses with webbing imbedded in them. Hope your fix turns out well!

      @@rybreadification It turned out great! I swapped the old out with the new today and my car is running great. I have a ground issue still and a vacuum leak from my oil cap causing misfires, but other than that the 924 is rearing to go!

      Nice, glad to hear that worked out! I’ve read about the ground issues on these cars - I should probably go through mine soon. Seems like there’s a number of little things like that that kind of consistently need to be addressed once these cars get to a certain age. I hope you’re project keeps going well!

    That last hose that attaches on the bottom of the intake manifold is in a rough spot. Can't wait to see how you get that back on!

      Yeah, it's definitely a little hard to get to. Also kind of interesting the clamp (at least on my car) needed a screwdriver and doesn't have a hex head on it. Thanks 4 the comment!

      The secret weapon for that I found is this socket flex extension tool that looks like a spring. Use a screwdriver that has a square socket end and swap to a worm clamp that has a hex.

      That sounds like a good tool to have, I'll have to get one of those. I ended up replacing that clamp with one of the hex headed clamps that came in the hose kit when I put it back together too, so I could see it coming in really handy for that in the future. Thanks 4 the comment!

      I’m doing well, thanks Ryan. I also have a table full of new parts ready to get going on some work (replace alternator bushings, rear CV boots, front bump stops, window felts, bleed brakes). The car came out last week but we got another snow dump today so will delay until it warms up a bit on the weekend. Maybe I’ll try to record some of it! 😊 Looking forward to the next episode!

      Nice. I shot video a couple of years ago when I pulled apart my cv joints and greased them but ended up moving on to other stuff and never made a episode out of it. Let me know if you have questions when you get there if I haven’t posted it by then. Yeah, I’ve got all kinds of parts now too. Here’s to a summer of us working on our Porsche’s!
