I read the comment about audiences laughing even when Andy appears to be serious. That's exactly how Kaufman wanted it, in my opinion. He always wanted the audience guessing, no matter what he was doing. He thrived on always keeping an audience off kilter. I highly doubt he was offended.

Never got anything involving Andy except stories. He said when going to Andy’s dressing room he would often find other characters there instead like Tony Clifton, foreign man , and among others of course, Elvis. He had to deal with the persona Andy was portraying as if he was real and not a character. He said there was definitely something strange and mysterious going on there, but, Andy was one of the sweetest , nicest people in show biz.
